Amazon.com Product Description

Perfect for outdoor enthusiasts who often get separated from their groups, such as mountain bikers, serious hikers, and whitewater rafters, this pair of Motorola rechargeable two-way radios keeps you connected from up to 12 miles away (based on terrain and conditions). The wide-ranging signal also works for more pedestrian tasks, such as keeping tabs on the kids while they're playing at a friend's house or calling your pals in the lodge while you're skiing on the slopes. Each radio comes equipped with 22 channels--including eight GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), seven FRS (Family Radio Service), and seven GMRS/FRS combo channels--giving you plenty of frequencies on which to communicate. The radios also receive a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration channel, which delivers up-to-the-minute storm warnings--a must for mountain climbers. And thanks to the rugged housing, convenient side grips, and included holsters, you'll enjoy quick, constant access to the radios in the midst of almost any activity.

To ensure that your conversation is always between you and your mates, Motorola included 121 privacy codes, which, when added to the 22 channels, gives you 2,662 options for exclusivity. The Priority Scan function lends a hand by searching for the most private channels in crowded environments, as does the Quiet Talk feature, which filters the signals from other radios to ensure an interruption-free conversation. And unlike the walkie-talkies of old, the Talkabout's signal is always strong, employing a Motorola-exclusive digital technology to filter out the static between words. This allows the radio to deliver noticeably clearer transmissions. Other bonuses include 10 distinct call tones, so your group can identify who's calling at a given time, along with a talk confirmation tone that lets others know when you've finished talking.

All Motorola two-way radios are also designed with compatibility in mind. The radios can communicate with other Talkabout models when set to the same channel/code sequence, or with competitors' products provided the channel and code sequences are compatible. Additional features include a backlit LED display that's easy to read even in dark environments, an audible low battery alert and battery meter, a keypad lock, and a VibraCall vibrating alert.

The SX700R radios come ready for recharging, with a pair of Motorola NiMH battery packs and a dual desktop charger. The battery packs offer approximately 7 hours of two-way use per charge. As an alternative, users can pop in a quartet of AAA alkaline (high capacity) batteries.

Note:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that operators on General Mobile Service (GMRS) and Private Land Mobile (PLM) frequencies obtain an FCC license prior to use. To learn more, please visit the FCC web site.

3 out of 5 stars Range not as advertised.......2007-08-27

This 2-way radio boasts a (up to) 12mile range, you will be lucky if you can get 1 mile under optimal conditions. Ignore range claims and go for the cheaper radio, the transmit power on all these radio's are identical.

5 out of 5 stars talkabout SX700R.......2007-08-10

This product works as advertised. The sound is crystal clear. I have not had the opportunity to use them in a more rural setting which is when you will achieve the maximum talk distance. In the city, depending on building location, you can get 1-2 miles of range. They will come in handy during the hunting season.

4 out of 5 stars Info about range claims.......2007-08-05

When looking at FRS/GMRS Radios radios ignore the marketing ploys that tell you the range of the radios (12 miles, 18 miles, 22 miles). All of the radios sold to the general public (except high end models- over $100 per individual radio) have the same power output rating- 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS. All other things being equal- every radio will have the excact same range. Why do you think that the more expensive the radio the farther a range the manufacturer says it has? Because they want you to THINK a more expensive radio has a farther range so you will buy the more expensive one. But they all have the same power output- meaning they will essentially have the same range. This is all a marketing PLOY to get you to buy a more expensive radio. A more expensive radio may have more features, but if the power output is the same the range will essentially be the same. You can look for the power output on the manufacturer's website, but I have researced this already- almost all models sold to the general public have 1/2 a watt for FRS and 2 watts for GMRS. With the power rating being the same the things that will affect range are antenna size, height of the transmitter, and terrain- usually things you will have little control over. So buy a radio that has the features and size you want and ignore the marketing ploys about the range.

5 out of 5 stars It's the wattage, folks.......2007-06-21

Several people have complained about these radios having a very short range in adverse conditions (e.g., downtown in a city with large buildings). That is unsurprising.

All that matters with regard to range is the wattage of the radio. There is no magic technology that makes one 2-watt radio have superior range to another 2-watt radio.

These radios are 2-watt. They do fine for that, and are very nice 2 watt radios. But if you seriously need really good range, then you need 5-watt radios (the maximum power the FCC allows for family usage), like the Motorola AXV5100. As you might imagine, 5 watt radios are much more expensive - like $500 per pair.

5 out of 5 stars Good Range, Easy to use.......2007-06-11

Bought these to replace a pair of Midlands that were a Christmas gift. The buttons on the Midlands were hard to push, and the radios just did not work well. These are great. Easy to use, and have good range. I take one with me on a 4-mile walk each morning, and can communicate back to my home on the entire walk. These are kinda big, compared to the Midland. Wish they were smaller...

3 out of 5 stars No privacy codes.......2007-05-17

These radios are very similar to the FV200R ones. In fact, on the surface it looks like the only difference is the fact that the FV200R are rechargeable. This is not true though; the FV200R have privacy codes. What this means is that you will only hear broadcasts by the other radio, and not all radios that are using that channel - which can be a lot at a ski resort. This feature will also extend battery life since the speaker won't be active that often.
Another consideration is the transmit power, which is rated at 500mW for these radios. Typically, the range is doubled for a 4-times increase in transmit power. Some two-ways on the market use 1000mW of transmit power. This will increase your range by 50%, but will consume more battery power.
You need to weigh range, battery life and privacy codes when making your decision. Motorola is a very good brand and these are very good radios - as long as you accept their shortcomings.

3 out of 5 stars Picks up too many signals.......2007-01-12

All in all, this isn't a terrible Talkabout 2-way radio...but it picks up every signal around! There just aren't enough channels on this thing. As for the range, you're probably better off getting a 5-mile radius radio, especially if you're skiing around Northstar in Reno! For the price, it isn't a bad radio - but if I had a chance to do it all over again, I'd shell out the money for a better radio.

2 out of 5 stars Fairly cheap.......2006-11-23

The construction is pretty poor in my opinion. Bought these for my boys to play with and they didn't last a month. The boys are 10 and 11. Range is bad, reception is bad, battery life bad.

1 out of 5 stars Not as Expected.......2006-03-23

Range is very weak probably less than half a mile. Don't waste your money.

1 out of 5 stars no Range.......2006-02-25

I purchased these radios for a back up so to speak for my elderly mother. We live approximately 1/2 mile from each other and I wanted her to be able to reach me if she had an accident and could not get to a phone. These walkie talkies worked great within 200 feet of her house but after that the range lost any chance of hearing her. I would not reccomend them to anyone who needs something to rely on!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars It works.......2007-07-16

This set, though only 50% more expensive than my grandaughter's stinking Barbi walkie-talkie, actualy works rather well, though set the volume to 15 and leave it there. It works better outside of a car better than in side one. Range is basic line of site to 5 miles, but rapidly drops off if hills or buildings get in the way. I'm very satisfied, so is my grandaughter.

2 out of 5 stars bad audio quality.......2007-06-20

transmitter audio quality is bad...people say it's hard to hear what I'm saying. Older motorola or newer uniden are much better.

5 out of 5 stars 2-Way Radios.......2007-03-08

Fast Service and great price! Work great for about a mile or so but then I got them for shopping with my wife, she is at one end of the store and I am at the other.

5 out of 5 stars Great for in the neighborhood and around the house........2007-01-06

This is the second time I've purchased this particular product. Unfortunately, last summer one fell in the pool and that was the end of that. We live in a small neighborhood on a dead end street with lots of kids. When I send my kids down to play they attach this to their pants with the belt clip or put it in a coat pocket. When it's time to come home or I want to check up on them, I just give them a call on the radio. I also use it when my kids are sick. Their bedrooms are upstairs and if I'm downstairs doing laundry or working on the computer, they can just call me on the radio rather than yelling which isn't something they like to do when they are sick! Great for what we use it for.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value for basic walkie-talkies.......2007-01-04

Buy it for keeping in touch with my relatives inside large shopping centers when I am travelling, it works just fine!

    Amazon.com Review

Feature-packed and amazingly versatile, Motorola's T9500XLR 2-way radios blur the line between professional and consumer models. With an astounding maximum range of 25 miles, weather alerts, digital privacy codes, hands-free transmission, and more, these little yellow wonders pack a lot under the hood. But how do they perform in the real world? To find out, we put the radios to the test in the urban jungle.

    Design
Compact and easy to hold, the T9500XLR's are also rugged and up to the task of any outdoor adventure. While they aren't completely waterproof, the ports and buttons have rubberized covers for keeping the elements out. The controls are relatively simple to figure out, and after a brief glance at the user's manual, you'll be up and running. The antenna on the radios is rather large--necessary for boosting range, but it might be stretch to tuck one into a small coat or pants pocket.

The all-important transmit button is easy to depress and hold. Pressing on the top portion of the button places the radio in "Power Boost" mode, which maximizes the transmission range. You'll save battery by using the lower power mode when talking to parties that you know are closeby. The radios are powered by included NiMH battery packs, which are rechargeable (a charger comes with the radios, too). You can also opt to use old fashioned AA batteries (three of them per radio) if you're on an extended expedition without AC power.

    Features
The T9500XLR supports up to 22 channels across the GMRS and FRS spectrum. GMRS channels offer high range and power for longer distance communication. There are also 121 interference elimination codes, also known as privacy codes. Codes 39-121 are digital, and they offer superior interference blocking when both radios are set to the same code. There's also an additional noise filter that filters out unwanted transmissions from other radios, something that's especially useful in places where there is a lot of radio traffic, such as a ski resort.

You can also take advantage of the T9500XLR's unique "iVox" feature, which allows you to transmit without pressing a button. The radio detects the sound of your voice and automatically sends the transmission. No other accessories or headsets are required. You can also use the traditional "Vox" mode which does require a headset. The "VibraCall Alert" vibrates the radio when you receive a transmission--great for use in noisy environments, or when you want to keep things discreet.

The radio can even scan its 22 channels for transmissions from other parties. Not only is this fun and often entertaining, it also also allows you to scan for members of your party who may have changed channels inadvertantly. Another handy feature is NOAA weather reception, which lets you listen to weather reports and bulletins right on your radio.

    Real World Testing
Motorola claims a 25-mile range for the T9500XLR, but they add that this is really only attainable under ideal conditions, such as transmitting from the top of a mountain down into a wide open valley. Moto says a range of 10 miles is more feasible in day-to-day use, while two miles is the maximum range in dense urban areas.

In downtown Seattle, that turned out to be pretty much true. Reception was good throughout the urban core, but when one tester ventured beyond that magical 2-mile radius reception started to fade. The radios did a good job filtering out unwanted transmissions, thanks to the privacy codes, and the number of available channels. Finding an unused channel in a busy city is a challenge, though. When in range, transmissions were clear and distortion-free.

All in all, the T9500XLR is a top-notch radio with features one would expect on a product twice or three times the price. It earns our praise as a top performer for those who need the most out of a two way radio.

2 out of 5 stars Great features but lousy sound quality........2007-09-06

I use two-way radios at work and on weekends and vacations. Until now I've been very happy with many different Motorola and Midland models. The T9500 has great features but the sound quality is lousy which makes it virtually unusable.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't Buy These.......2007-08-23

We use 6 - 8 handheld radios at our business to communicate across multiple floors and buildings. We have gone through two generations of Motorola Talkabouts, with this line being the third. These are the worst of them all. The last generation of blue and black ones was fairly bad, with several ceasing to work within days of purchase, and so we thought we would upgrade to the next model up. Of the 6 we purchased, 5 did not have adequate sound transmission - cutting off at the beginning and end of transmission or not working at all. These are junk, don't waste your money! (My one star is because they are attractive to look at.)

    2 out of 5 stars flawed.......2007-08-20

I purchased these radios a few months ago and essentially have been unable to use them. The voice clarity does not exist. No one is able to understand anyone. It cuts out sporadically. I would say that the distance is terrible also, but I can't tell if the radio is cutting out or I just can't understand anyone. Called MOTO and they actually confirm that there is a problem!!! with this and another new model. They recommended that I get the sx800r model! At first they wouldn't even take it back.
Oh, the NOAA channels are great and CLEAR!?
    Design is also good.

    5 out of 5 stars Exceptional features!.......2007-08-02

Wow, have walkie-talkies changed in four years! These are packed with some pretty sophisticated features, including NOAA Weather Alert and are very user-friendly. Strongly recommend!!

3 out of 5 stars They are OK.......2007-07-24

I have purchased Motorola 2-way radios in the past to use in our place of business. Because it was time to replace the radios, I read the reviews and purchased these.

The biggest problem I have with the radios is the lack of clarity. It is very difficult to understand what anyone says.

They hold a charge nicely, and seem to be sturdy, but if you can't understand what someone says, they don't seem to stand up to the hype.

    1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2007-09-24

I am new to two way radios so I thought Motorola well known brand must make a decent radio - I was wrong. They are complete junk. You cannot understand a word from the speakers. The voice activate mode takes 5 seconds to kick in talking loudly (even on most sensitive mode) to kick in. I was 100 yards away from the other user and every other word was cut off. I went an bought midland radios which work perfectly.I later found out that midland does have a good name in the radio world from a friend. Save yourself the hassle and avoid motorola radios.

    5 out of 5 stars very satisfied.......2007-09-20

I purchased these radios about a month ago. They have worked very well. They have more "bells and whistles" than my wife and I really need, but is nice to know what is available should we need it. The instructions to get started were clear and simple. We are very glad we ordered the kit.

MOTOROLA T7150 2-WAY RADIO VALUE PACK PROVIDES UP TO 7-MILE RAN

      Amazon.com Product Description

A fun, practical way to stay in contact during long hikes or ski trips, this pair of Motorola rechargeable two-way radios keeps you connected from up to seven miles away (based on terrain and conditions). The wide-ranging signal also lets you keep tabs on the kids while at a theme park or playground, or give your down-river pal a quick head's up on where the fish are biting. Each radio comes equipped with 22 channels--including eight GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service), seven FRS (Family Radio Service), and seven GMRS/FRS combo channels--giving users plenty of frequencies on which to communicate. To ensure that the signal always sounds clean, Motorola added 38 eliminator codes, which help minimize crosstalk and interference from other devices. And should you accidentally lose contact with your group, you can easily scan the possible code combinations to learn which nearby channels are active, or scan for the most private channel in crowded environments. Other bonuses include 10 distinct call tones, so your group can identify who's calling at a given time, along with a talk confirmation tone that lets others know when you've finished talking.

All Motorola two-way radios are designed with compatibility in mind. The radios can communicate with other Talkabout models when set to the same channel/code sequence, or with competitors' products provided the channel and code sequences are compatible. Meanwhile, cyclists and other active users will delight in the radios' hands-free voice-activation function, which lets them talk freely through the mic without pressing any buttons (requires optional accessories). Additional features include a backlit LED display that's easy to read even in dark environments, an audible low battery alert and battery meter, a keypad lock, and a spring-action belt clip. Outdoor users will get a special kick out of the camouflage-colored faceplates, which can be swapped out with the included khaki faceplates for variety.

The T7150R radios come ready for recharging, with a pair of Motorola NiMH battery packs and desktop chargers. The battery packs offer approximately 13 hours of two-way use per charge. As an alternative, users can pop in a quartet of AA alkaline (high capacity) batteries, which enable nearly 22 hours of use.

      Note:
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires that operators on General Mobile Service (GMRS) and Private Land Mobile (PLM) frequencies obtain an FCC license prior to use. To learn more, please visit the FCC web site.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the toys!!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-14

Hi! I'm the 37 year old again. Back to the story. Rachel, my daughter, and I went on the internet again with her lemonade money. Well, Rachel's the Computer Wizard and went on the computer herself. She yelled "Mommie! I found a good pair of walkie-talkies! Pretty Colors too!" I ran in and I thought they were junk like the "Elite Operations Officer Walkie- Talkie". I'm a sucker for the puppy dog face. Well, it turns out Rachel knew it. You know what happened next. We got the walkie-talkies and Rachel gave one to her friend Sulema and I was amazed at how well they worked. No statick. And whoever got on thier chanell, the two girls could go on an other one. Perfect and worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars What it is (a good radio) and what it is not (a magic wand)........2005-01-21

This product works very well if used in the manner in which it was designed.

Boaters, this is not a marine radio, and don't expect the Coast Guard, Sea Tow, or even other boats to be monitoring these channels. Today's marine VHF radios are small enough for even a Jet-Ski or the smallest dinghy and have appropriate waterproofing.

If you want to cover a farm, country club or large industrial or office park, spend the extra money on a proper business radio. Also, wherever possible, a vehicle-mount (truck, tractor, golf cart) radio with the right antenna will reach much farther and sound much better than anything hand-held.

Who should buy this radio? Skiers and snowboarders, bicyclists, hikers, campers, hunters, any groups of people who may tend to get separated beyond shouting range. Video production, stage and ligthting crews who can find this a low-cost, easy-to-use substitute for Clear-Com systems. Obviously they will need to use headsets to keep the sound from getting into the audience or audio track, and those who need to keep their hands free, like video camera operators will prefer the VOX headset. It would have been nice if they sold these as a package, which would be cheaper than buying them separately.

This type of signal is by nature for line-of-sight transmission only, and not like CB, and will not go around large mountains or "skip" like lower-frequency radio signals.

This radio is built ruggedly with the kind of quality we got familiar with on the older, bulkier Talkabouts. As for the menus, I would suggest you keep the manual close at hand until you get the hang of navigating though the commands. I like the pushbutton-release belt clips.

I bought the NiCd version of these radios, which Amazon also sells, and it came with a handy charging stand and works well as long as you remember to charge it up before using. :-) Those of you who choose the AA-powered version would be well-advised to get a nice set of NiMH batteries and charger, even though Amazon has great prices on alkaline batteries.

Overall, this radio is very worthwhile and satisfactory.

1 out of 5 stars Not as powerful as older FRS models!.......2004-07-20

Having been a fan of Motorola FRS walkie-Talkies for years, I was looking forward to the extra power of the GMRS models. The Motorola T5720 was a major disapointment! I made a few range tests and found that the T5720 was not nearly as effective as my old Motorola T289 FRS radio - much less range, more noise, poor audio quality. Don't buy this product!

4 out of 5 stars Very Decent radio.......2004-06-04

This is my first radio, I bought it last week. Used it over the long weekend in Lake George, NY. It was really useful to talk to my friend to find parking or ordering food. As cell phone coverages was not good as you go 3 to 4 mile north from village, this radio helped us a lot. I bought a AA battery model because I have bunch of NiMH (not NiCd) rechargable batteries (used for my digital camera). NiMH is FAR Superior than NiCd batteries.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as i hoped.......2004-03-01

It is not as good as i hoped. Bottom line, too much batteries, (batteries are expensive) and it goes through them like a fat woman through chocolate.I will write a review on batteries as soon as i find them and boy will they get theirs.Motorola is not the best walkie talkie company. Its range is only 5 miles that five miles can make the difference between life and death when you are lost in a vietnamese jungle during the rainy season. And it is too quiet and their are not enough channels. And when you are playing mission impossible in the heating vents the range is reduced to like, 30 feet more or less. And shortly after mission impossible it ran out of batteries.
