Works great.......2007-09-22

I've had it about a month now... works great. Copies, prints, and scans are quick and clean. The duplex mode is fast. You have to look for it, but there is an "econo-toner" mode you can set up as default. Also, the unit falls into an "energy-saver" state when it is not in use (just takes hardly a second to wake up). I would buy it again without hesitation.

Misleading product description. Not compatible with Mac OS. Very, very disappointed........2007-09-11

There was nothing in the product description that describes its compatibility with computer operation systems. There is a Mac logo on the product page of Canon's website (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=124&modelid=14444). So I assumed it should work with Mac. Only after my friend and I lifted the heavy box to my apartment on the 9th floor, unpacked the box and started trying all the functions did I realize this machine is only partially compatible with Mac. It only has printer and fax drivers that work on Mac. So, with my computer, its scanner is just a useless display. Now the question is why would somebody make a multifunctional machine which is only partially compatible with a computer operating system? This is really baffling. I would feel better if it's completely incompatible with Mac and would feel much better if they had indicated clearly that NOT every function of this multifunctional machine is Mac-compatible. This is my first time to give anything one star, and I think it's appropriate for a product with misleading information. I hope Canon can take the Mac logo off the product page soon. (And of course, I returned it right away.)

GREAT work horse of a machine!!.......2007-09-10

The only negative I could even possibly come up with on this machine is that when it's in resting mode and I need to photo copy a paper I have to press the energy saver button before pressing the copy button. I would think just pressing the copy button would bring it out of resting mode. However, that is such a minor "problem" when I realized what a great machine this is. It's fast, easy to set up, and is worth every penny. Can't go wrong with this machine if you don't need color.

One other minor "problem" is that when I went to print from Quicken software I found out that Quicken will not print to any printer that has "on" in it's name....Can"on".....so I've had to hassle with renaming my printer Can instead of Canon to make it work. I do feel this is a Quicken issue so it's hard to hold the Canon accountable for it.

Excellent All-in-one printer.......2007-09-10

This printer is simply amazingly for its price. The print quality and speed are excellent. It's very quiet and starts up almost without delay. The best thing is that has automatic duplex printing. The only imperfection is probably the lack of auto-duplex scanning. But I'm not complaining because you can't find that kind of capability anywhere for at the price of this printer. I've also found a way around it by using Adobe Acrobat to scan double-paged documents. I can't find a better all-in-one monochrome laser printer around and I'd recommend it to any home user or small office.

Best Duplexing Networking Value Out There.......2007-09-04

I've been an HP customer for years, both at home and at work. I needed a networking laser printer after my old print server died - I decided it would be silly to spend more money on another print server just to keep the old laser printer going. I also wanted duplexing built-in to save paper. This Brother seemed almost too good to be true. I was even more worried about a refurbished model. But, this printer is FANTASTIC and even better than I had hoped.

It is very fast, even when duplexing. It does make some noise, but it's certainly nothing louder than your average laser printer. I've printed hundreds of pages so far and no problems or jams. The duplexing works great. The print quality is excellent, dark and clear, especially text, which is mostly what I print.

The only problem I've encountered so far might be a deal-breaker for some users, and that's envelope printing. I don't print envelopes with this printer so I'm not upset, but I did run quite a few tests and the printer does mangle every type of envelope I tried. I guess there being no straight path option (opening on the back in most other models) is what causes the envelope problem.

At this price for a duplexing networking laser printer I couldn't be more pleased.

Best Printer For The Money.......2007-09-01

This printer arrived and you would have no idea it was refurbished if the description did not say so. I opened the box and it looked brand new. I installed the toner and ran a test page through and printed right away, very fast. This was my first home laser printer but I am very familiar with lasers as I work in IT and I am working on them alll the time. Anyway this $150 Brother competes in speed with the the HP printers we use at work that cost 5 times as much. The print quality was excellent as well. So another reason I got this printer was because it was networkable. I added the printer by IP on both my XP machine and Vista laptop. No problems with either one took me a total of like 5 mins and I was up and running printing from both computers. Did not even bother to install any of the software that came with the printer. Just a nice clean add printer and I am good to go. Only con I would say is it is a little loud but I think that comes with the speed of the printer. Its not that bad though, I still give it the highest rating possible.

I was pretty excited about this printer based on all of the reviews that I've seen both here and on the Web. I looked at quite a few printers for that magical value versus cost and for the most part, this printer delivers. However - it's not great. For text printing I'd say it's worth every penny (and it's not a lot of pennies either!) - but for printing black and white pictures, it leaves a lot to be desired. Banding and washed out pixelated photos are what I'm getting. Perhaps it's part of the refurb - who knows... I had a gift certificate so it was worth the $50 total that I spent. I was a bit disappointed, however. What can I say - it is what it is. The good side - networking was easy to setup and includes a lot of different options. IP, Netbios, cups, Windows, etc. Duplex was also really nice and interesting to watch... It's also a pretty fast printer if you stick with the lower resolutions. There's a bit of a power surge when printing like what has been said here before... So - 3 stars...

Not up to Brother standards.......2007-08-26

I have an older version of this product that works much better. I expected this one to be at least as good. However is is constantly jamming when double side printing. I'm disappointed with this product.

Excellent Duplex Printer & Scanner.......2007-09-08

I previously owned several Brother MFCs, and each one has improved upon the others. My MFC-9700 has worked beautifully but I purchased this one because I have been doing an increasing amount of duplex printing & scanning, and it does the job just as I had hoped. The other thing I wanted was legal sized scanning. This will allow me to replace the MFC-9700 and a Xerox 105DF with one better unit.

I did have a problem with the refurbished drum unit on the first one I got (small nick on the drum causing a blob every 3.7" - manual diagnosed quickly) but was pleased with how quickly Amazon sent me a replacement unit, which I used to swap the drum, and Amazon provided a free UPS pickup - all at no cost to me.

Here's some points answering previous posts & questions:

Drum & Toner - These are refurbished and there's a sticker on them saying you get at least 90% of the stated rating. My first unit came with a standard 550 toner, but my replacement actually had a refurb 580 high-yield toner - Bonus!

Warranty - Brother does warrantee the printer, but they don't warrantee the Drum & Toner. That's why I had to have Amazon send out a whole other unit.

Crinkled Envelopes - Yes, by default it will crinkle your envelopes. The manual quickly shows you the solution - raise two blue levers on the back of the unit. That fixes it quick. The manual says to restore them to do normal printing, but I haven't seen a problem with them in the modified position for regular paper or envelopes.

Scan Speed - The scan speed is never the same as the print speed. This unit does scan much faster than my previous MFCs and you'd pay as much for a scanner of this speed alone. Single sided scanning is 16ppm, double sided is much more complex so it does about 4ppm (200dpi B&W - much slower for higher res & color).

Duplexing - Fantastic! No more shuffling papers back into the paper tray and figuring out which way to turn them. Printer dialog & scanning dialog has a duplex option.

Software - Paperport 9 Deluxe is the way to go. When I tried paperport 11 a year or so ago it was a disaster - very buggy. Search on the internet and you'll see many similar reports. Possibly it's better now. I had full Paperport Deluxe 9 on my system and made the mistake of using the default MFL-Pro Suite installation which blew away PP 9 Dlx and installed Paperport 9 SE. I couldn't even install PP 9 Dlx afterwards because the SE version is newer?? Luckily I use Norton Ghost so after a full restore I chose the "suite w/o Paperport" option and it worked beautifully.

Scanner Driver - Scanning from Paperport brings up a "TW-Brother Scanner Setup" dialog which stays around after the scan and you have to close manually. That dialog lets you choose photo/web/text, res, b&w/color, Brightness, Doc size, Duplex, and gives a PreScan to select cropping. It's improved over my last MFC 9700 driver. The only problem is that Paperport also has some of the same options so it's a bit confusing. I wish the Scanner Setup dlg went away after the scan. Better still I wish it let you configure the scanner setup once and then it should just scan it without going there at all. The hardware button (see below) does avoid the scanner setup dialog but doesn't scan correctly.

Scanning hardware buttons - The 8860dn has hardware buttons for scanning, then you choose from a menu on the unit for file/OCR/email/image. Unfortunately it's very complex after that because then it fires up a Brother "ControlCenter2" which you have to configure, and it's not intuitive. Worst of all, the scans don't conform to the settings so I could never get it to scan in 200dpi B&W PDF correctly. I think it was storing it in color or something because the files were 10x larger than what it should have been. You can tell it to show the scanner setup which does scan correctly, but then you might as well not use the hardware button. Unfortunately that feature seems to be useless unless there's a newer version of the driver. However, I usually scan from Paperport anyways so it doesn't impact me.

Legal sized paper - My MFC-9700 didn't have legal sized glass so I'd have to use an old Xerox 105df to reduce it before scanning. (There was a driver option to do it from the ADF but you had to reboot the PC??!!) Now, you just choose legal sized paper in the scanner setup dialog and you're in business. Just be sure to remember to reset it for the next scan.

Connections - I used the USB connection to my main computer to make the scanning, but I've hooked up two other computers by using Windows printer sharing, and direct ethernet. All worked great and all printer driver features carried over.

Initial Views.......2007-09-05

Every thing works as advertised. I failed to read the operating system restrictions BEWARE do NOT aniticpated using in Windows Server 2003. Paper port does not support this and the network function is worthless for me. I installed locally via USB and configured to scan to shared file folder on my server.

Also, could not get the printer to regester on my router - gave up when discovered would not work in Windows Server enviroment.

All print, scan and fax functions work great - very good printer/scanner/fax. Teach me to read fine print!

Oh, Brother, I love you.......2007-09-02

I am thrilled with my new Brother Printer. The set up was extremely easy, which is a good thing for me since I have difficulty reading manuals. The entire manual is completely in English, too! I love saving paper with the duplex option. I thought I would miss my HP, but I don't miss it at all.

Great Machine with a few hiccups.......2007-08-14

I have used several brother multifunction machines over the past ten years and have been very pleased with the quality and economy of use. This machine is no exception. Copying, printing and faxing are a breeze and duplexing is cool. The paperport software is not supported by Vista and brother has not made a deal yet to allow an upgrade to paperport 11 as some other companies have. The native applications in vista work well with the machine but for multi-page scans to email you will need an outside application (I like pdf machine). The other reservation I have about this machine is that printing #10 envelopes does not seem to be supported and I have not been able to print any envelopes. I will do some more research on this and try to come up with a solution.

Great Machine - Couple of Hints.......2007-08-06

Received machine last week and I am pleased.

These all in one machines are NOT well reviewed. The reviews lump all the AIO machines together and do not allow features to be isolated. I bought this machine because it has laser printing (better for business purposes), full duplex scanning, full duplex printing and, I think, full duplex faxing. I could not find any other company that has all these features at a reasonable price. Rather than repeat other reviews, following are a couple of comments that might be useful.
1. Documentation is fair. There is a bound manual included with the machine but all too often you are referred to the CD Software manual.
2. Phone service is good. Unlike the situation with most software today, there is actually human phone support. Have a speaker phone ready because accessing a person can take 5 - 10 minutes. On the other hand, the service people are patient and provide good quality support.
3. Crinkled envelopes. The remedy is actually in the manual but phone service pointed out that two plastic levers at the back of the machine have to be switched to "up" to remedy the crinkling problem. I view this as "poor" design because the levers have to be switched back to print flat paper - regardless which tray is being used (they should allow separate settings for each tray and if the switch has to be accessed that frequently, it should not be at the back of the machine).
4. Scanning. I purchased the machine largely for scanning and printing (I use Internet fax). The scanning is slower than I thought it would be. It is nowhere near 30 pages per minute.
5. Another comment on scanning. Brother produces a Scanner/copier/printer (DCP-8065DN) but the MFC-8860DN which is similar also has fax capabilities. The 8860DN is less expensive than the 8065DN. I assume this is because the 8860DN is produced and sold in higher volume.
6. Warrantee. Amazon confirmed that the refurbished machine has a one year warrantee from Brother. A new machine also has a one year warrantee -- go with the refurbished machine.

I really will not know how solid this machine is until I have had several months of hard useage on it. However, so far I am more than satisfied. I have other Brother products and think highly of the brand. I expect a similar experience with this machine.

Brother HL5250 DN Printer.......2007-09-14

This printer is everything I thought it would be when I purchased it. I am using the buildin network interface and had no problem doing the configuration. The only issue is when it warms up it pulls so much current, I get a warning from my UPS but it quickly goes back to an acceptable load.

What happened to the rear paper feed?.......2007-09-08

Update -- I submitted an inquiry to Brother's online help and they answered within one business day. Turns out it's on the front, not the rear. My bad.

This printer says it has a rear feed that holds up to 50 sheets. When I tried to print labels using MS Word it defaults to the rear feed. When I opened the rear door -- guess what? No paper handling devices were there. It's just a door. And the labels or plain paper will not feed into the apparent slot available. Also no manual came with the printer, not even on the install disk. I had to download a pdf file from Brother's website.

Very good laser printer.......2007-08-24

Overall, I have been very pleased with this printer. The size and weight makes it very convenient to tuck away out of sight. The print quality and speed are very good and the duplex feature works very well. I was surprised at how well the duplex works. It printed so quickly that I didn't think it worked! I would give this 5 stars but the chassis seems a bit flimsy. It feels like it is going to snap apart when you open the front cover. But that shouldn't prevent you from buying this printer.

Fast printer, easy network set up.......2007-08-16

I just got the printer this week and compared to an ink jet it is very fast. As other reviewers have noted, the paper tray seems a little flimsy and the paper comes out curled at the edges, but I can live with that.

Printer driver installation was easy on a network. I connected the printer to a wireless broadband router after the drivers were installed on one computer. I didn't disconnect the printer when I installed the drivers on a wirelessly connected computer and it installed without any problems. It was fun to be able to print via the network rather than by printer sharing.

The only faults I have with the printer so far are:
1) I connected it to a spare 275 W UPS I had and it apparently drew too much power so the UPS started beeping and tripped out. However, when I connected it to the surge suppressor side nothing happened.

2) The power button is on the back at the bottom right of the machine.

3) When it goes into sleep mode, no lights show on top, so you could accidentally leave it on. Since the manual stated that the machine must be plugged in to an easily accessible plug so that it can be plugged out in an emergency, I prefer to know if the machine is on or not.

4) Printing at the lowest setting with toner saver on doesn't seem as bright or as sharp as draft printing on my old HP 710C.

5) Don't print charts with text on the lowest settings and toner saver on - better to use the highest quality with toner saver off.

6) Not very good at printing photos, even at the highest settings (HQ 1200 dpi) - banding seen.

I still like it though :-)

Quark fix.......2007-08-16

Jaggy lines in Quark can easily be resolved by adding a new driver to your Printer Setup Utility.

Mine lasted 15 months before going DEAD. .......2007-09-17

I purchased this model for work and can honestly state that I use it no more than a couple times a week on average. 14 months of use and now I get skewed printing, a problem that technicians have told me is not an easy/cheap fix. So I place a call to Brother to see if I can get some sort of customer "service" and all I get is a cold "NO". We are not dealing with a $100 printer here and the fact that they were so unwilling to even cover the cost of parts makes me regret ever purchasing a Brother product. According to Brother, they cover for the first year after purchase or sixteen months after date of manufacturer. My machine is 18 months out of manufacturing, and 14 months since the date of purchase. Sure its a bit off but you would think that they would be willing to help out considering its a $500 machine. Unfortunately, the company has a long way to go in their customer service department.
Basically, I would suggest looking into other similar machines with better manufacturer's warranties...it will save you a lot of trouble and money in the long run.

This is a user friendly, with a little concentration, true multi-tasker. For 1/3 the size of our previous copier and our previous fax machine put together, we have both. The print quality is truely outstanding and the auto feed function doesn't miss a page. You'll be pleased with this one!

Great network printer/scanner.......2007-09-16

Prior to buying this machine, I bought a Canon multifunction printer which was supposed to work with an Axis print server. To my disappointment, there were all sorts of problems and I would end up having to check on the print server every time I wanted to print or scan something.

Unlike the Canon, this machine has worked perfectly. I am able to scan and print from all 9 computers on my network without ever having issues. This is a great printer for anyone on a small network with moderate printing and scanning needs.

Poor support for Vista.......2007-08-29

I have had the machine for about a week and just now got around to doing some scanning with it. Much to my chagrin, I discovered that scanning from the machine (instead of using the software interface at the pc level), does not work. I called Brother and they told me that there is no support for Vista. Amazingly, they have no known plans to offer support for Vista in the future either.

A big disappointment from Brother. Why didn't they outline this incompatibility in their sales litterature? I hope that this post helps others avoid the hassle of buying a machine that will need to be shipped back.

Poor quality ink.......2007-08-19

This printer works well except for one major problem - Brother ink does not adhere to the paper. I use good quality stationery in my business and found that the ink smudged and rubbed off, particularly on envelopes. The problem is not too bad with regular white copy paper, but if you plan to use good stationery, don't buy a Brother printer!

Solid office machine.......2007-09-20

I have owned three different HP OfficeJet all-in-one. The Brother MFC-8870dw is the best yet.

PROS:
Fast printing. Excellent first page out speed with power saving turned off.
Good paper capacity.
Built in Ethernet networking works good. We do not use the wireless capability.
Excellent faxing. Scans the item before dialing number. So a paper jam doesn't waste a long distance fee.
The best document feeder i have used.
Duplexing works great.

CONS:
The software needs updating.
Mediocre first page out speed with power saving on.

Conclusion: This is a solid Small Business Machine. It may not be suitable for home use.

Dependable Printer.......2007-08-11

This printer is reliable and heavy-duty. Our business has had good response from technical support in wireless issues with our printer. The end result has been a total success.

mfc-8870 DW Toner issues.......2007-06-24

We got this machine it performed flawlessly. both pc & macs are printing via usb & wireless, quality is tops. After, the 2nd cartridge, we have NOT been able to install a new cartridge properly. We have bought 3 different cartridges none fit in properly. We got a new machine and still the same problem. when we manage to get the cartridge in properly the paper jams all the time. Darn, it was too beautiful to last.... we are using brother stock all the way and it still doesn't work. The techs at Fry's don't seem to be able to correct this either. so it is in the repair shop for 5 weeks and we have a brand new one that has the same symptoms...Man it was too good to be true. If we don't resolve this we are going to HP. We've had several Brother machine and they did work well.

Great choice.......2007-06-13

This machine works very well. It warms up fast from sleep mode. The printing looks great. The scanning and copying are excellent. The only problem I've had is that once in awhile the copies print a little off center. I haven't had time to figure out if it's my fault or the machine. Overall it's a great performer.

What you should know before you buy a Brother.......2007-05-15

I have owned the MFC-9420CN, but you might want to read this before purchasing any Brother printer. I have had this machine for about a year it cost over $1,000 and is suppose to be for business. This machine is in my home and I do use it more than probably most homes, but not nearly the amount a buisiness would use. After I print about 100-200 copies the machine overheats and needs to take a very long break, sometimes overnight. Make sure you read the entire manual. You need to know how heavy of paper you can use. It won't even take standard coverstock 67lbs. It will only take up to 55 lbs. This machine jams all the time, both at the paperfeeder on top as well as the papertray on the bottom. I have made many calls to Brother. I do get to speak to a live person; however, they are not all trained very well. One problem took them a week to fix, many many phone calls and a guy coming to my home twice. I will give them credit for taking care of the problem and not charging me anything. My most recent problem was with a toner cartridge of theirs. Read the fine print, they only guarantee their cartridge for 90 days with a receipt. So, now I'm out $100, yes, that is how much their cartidges costs. Think twice before purchasing any printer, read the fine print and do a lot of research.

Brother Printer - fast but noisy while printing.......2007-09-21

This printer is fairly compact, fast, very energy efficient, silent in sleep mode and produces excellent printed pages. It supports duplex printing which is difficult to find in printers at this price range. It is easy to install/set-up and works well in wireless mode. My only nit is that it is loud while printing. It comes with a parallel port which is really unnecessary and useless.
This printer works perfectly with all three Macs in our home office. I would recommend this printer.

totally worth the price.......2007-08-10

I am really impressed at the clarity and utility of this communication device. When I first opened the package and installed the batteries, nothing happened, but turned out the batteries included with the kit were dead. After swapping out the batteries with some high quality duracells, it really worked excellent, both inside my full face helmet and in on my girlfriend's 3/4 one. The belt clip was somewhat defective, kept sliding off the device, so I usually just put it in my pocket. It works excellently to about 45 mph on my kawasaki vulcan with a windshield. After that the clarity gets progressively worse, until at about 55 or 60mph it is too staticy to hear anything. So for going around town, or short bursts on the highway especially at low speed, I have found this to be wonderful. It is very clear and so it doesn't bother you're hearing after prolonged use. I would definitely recomend this to anyone.

Didn't make the grade.......2007-01-24

The first one sent to me did't work at all. The replacement worked - but only when standing still. As soon as we were underway, the static was so bad that we couldn't hear each other. Not what they said it was so I'm still looking....

Nady PMC-2X intercom.......2005-08-26

Received as a gift. The unit worked somewhat for about 1-1/2 hours of careful use then one of the headsets failed. Nady promised a replacement on July 26 but did not replace the unit. Nady ignored about 5 inquiries about why the unit was not replaced. I would avoid any item made by this company.

THe Nady PMC-2X intercom system is nearly unusable....no matter how low the volume is set it picks-up the noise from the engine and cuts-out. What I've read on the internet forums is true... This is a product to avoid.

Not perfect but really good.......2007-05-13

Once you get the hand of the 6580, it does what is says. I find the LED instructions a little hard to read, you definitely need another tray, and the cartridges are way to expensive, but the features in the basic price are those of a $5,000 or more machine. The networking features are great. I would definitely recommend this over its little brother the 6550.
