1 out of 5 stars A drain on batteries.......2007-01-14

The design and overall function of the binoculars and built-in camera were as expected but the device used way too much of the AAA battery power. I used high quality batteries (Duracell) but could only get 6 to 8 pictures before the low battery indicator came on. Overall picture quality was low. Hard to get a crisp picture, especially for far away subjects. My advice to Meade is improve the power usage or design it to run off a high-quality rechargeable battery. My advice to potential buyers, wait until the power source is improved, unless you work for a battery company. After I went thru two packs of batteries I packed it up and sent it back. By the way, returning it was hassle-free.

1 out of 5 stars What I disliked ,,, A LOT!.......2007-01-04

This is the actual letter I sent the MEADE co.
Sir's,
Who designs these things? I purchased a cv-6 yesterday and returned it today. Prior to choosing what manufacture to buy, I read many reviews, and thought the cv-6 was a pretty good one. Do you guys write the reviews for these mags? For me, there were several issues; (1) The buttons are all too small. When attempting to take a photo it's impossible to hold the unit steady while attempting to press down in the correct spot to snap the shutter. All of the control buttons should be larger both in diameter and in height / profile. I even laid the unit down on the handrail of my deck for steadiness. That helped, but how often can one rest the unit to take a pic. (3) It eats batteries! One brand new pair of Energizers lasted only 12 pics!! Put in a 9v. (4) The focus knob for the binoculars is tucked up inside so far, and is hard to operate as it is very stiff. That makes it impossible to hold steady on the subject while focusing. (5) The camera focus ring did not "click" into any position as the manual said it should.
I didn't set out to bust anyone's chops. I really thought this would have been a good choice for me - especially after all of the research I did prior to purchasing. The above is simply my honest opinion of the product.

2 out of 5 stars Not what you expect - don't use this for special moments.......2006-11-21

I received this as a gift. No investment except for the SD card. I'm not pleased. It took 3 battery changes in an hour (117 shots). In perfect lighting conditions at the beach with a cliff view around 10 AM maybe 10 shots were keepers. The keepers were the ones with subjects furthest away. Tried some actions shots of gliding seagulls. Good luck getting timing down. Shutter delay is slow. You'd be better off with a comparable priced 5 mp digital camera and cropping ambient items in a shot to get a better close up keeper. Every shot at 100 ft or less was weak. Even as binoculars, it is hard to get excited about this item. The third eye used by the camera doesn't seem to see what you see with the binoculars. Note: when batteries get low, the LCD goes black but you can still squeeze off another 20 shots. I waited until I got to my computer to really analyze the quality. Great concept, poor on delivering on expectations. Why two stars? It a generosity rating based on the novelty of being able to capture shots with binoculars. Don't bother if you are on the 50 yard line, row 10. Every close up was blurry. You need to be in nose-bleed section to get reasonably decent shots. Oh and if you have any shadows - fugedaboutit. This item needs bright light to provide any chance of a fair photo.

5 out of 5 stars Meade 8x30 mm Capture View Binocular.......2006-03-10

I have only had a few days to learn the operation of this capture view system, but it is great. I ordered this as a replacement to an earlier version of a Meade CaptureView Binocular which I believe that they no longer market. My problem with that was that it had a virtual memory meaning that if I did not download the pictures promptly I was at risk of losing them if the batteries weakened or were removed. The new system solves that problem with a removable memory card (SD/MMC). The big plus is the list of things that I had not even been looking for. These are waterproof, so photos in a stream, lake, beach environment is at a lower risk than before. I did not think that I would ever use the MPEG recording of video until I started using it. I took these on a ski trip last weekend. I came across a training session where the Taos Avalanche Patrol was training the Avalanche Dogs. I was able to get some really neat MPEG files of the dog's antics and enthusiasm. As you can see from my star rating, I am very pleased with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best toys for kids.......2006-03-01

I've got this for my kid and it appears to be the one of the best toys for him :-)
perfect design and construction.
Just a few comments on it:
1)binocular optics is perfect and clear;
2)little bit difficult for kids to adjust focus, as when it's "closed" (i.e. distancebetween eyes is short:-))) it's difficult to access focus adjustment roller, located from bottom side;
3) Digital camera is not using original optics for taking x8 zoomed pictures, but as I suggest has separate path (possible it is not optical and just fixed X8 digital zoom), thus if you aren't using tripod, pictures apear to be kinda disfocused;
4) easy navigation menu (easy even for kids);
5) it isn't waterproof (fully waterproof), but I think at least "rainproof", i.e. it differs, when you use it in rainy weather and drop it into a water can :-))))

all in all it worth it!!!

FAQ

What can I view with my CaptureView Binoculars?
A: Use your CaptureView Binoculars for Sporting events, Bird-watching, public events, viewing wildlife. Anything you would use a standard pair of binoculars for, the CaptureView will see and give you the added advantage of capturing the image.

What programs can I use to manipulate my images? Can I use them to download images from my Camera?
A: You can use the software programs that are provided on the CD Rom that comes with the CaptureView Camera to manipulate and download images. If you are already using other Photo programs on your computer to manipulate images, they will also work with the CaptureView Camera.

How many images will my CaptureView hold?
The CaptureView 8x42 Camera will hold up to 40 images at 2.0 Megapixel Resolution with Built-In Memory. There is also a 3 Megapixel (interpolated) setting that will hold up to 20 images. The 1 Megapixel mode will hold up to 60 images. The VGA mode up to 120.

These cameras have a Movie Mode. How long can the movies be?
The movies are taken in Windows AVI Format and can be up to 90 seconds @QVGA (320 X 240 pixels). Use this mode to capture not just a moment, but the mood and feeling of an event.

What is an SD card?
An SD card is a Secure Digital Memory Card. This card will allow you to expand the amount of memory on the CaptureView camera up to 256 Megabytes. These cards are available in various sizes and can be purchased from any computer retailer. The CaptureView 8x42 will also work with Multi-Media Cards (MMC) up to 256MB.

Can I use the CaptureView 8x42 Camera on a Macintosh Computer?
If using a SD card you can download the images onto a Macintosh computer by using a flash card reader. You can also download your images to a Unix system. When using a flash card reader, the flash card looks like a Hard drive to your computer. Note: You cannot load to a Mac or Unix system using the camera's USB port - the USB port only can download to a Windows operating system.

How do I focus the Camera?
The camera is always in Focus from 66 feet to infinity. If you take pictures of objects closer than 66 feet they may appear fuzzy or blurry. When looking through the binoculars you will need to focus them for your eyes, but the camera will always be in focus.

What is the Flashback Feature?
A: The FlashBack feature records a movie for a user-selected period of time (5, 10, 15 or 20 seconds). You can record for as long as you like, but you will only save a recording for the period of time you have selected. For example, if you chose 10 seconds, only the last ten seconds of the recording will remain in memory and be saved--the rest of the recording is discarded.

An example of using the FlashBack feature would be to record a baseball pitcher throwing a pitch. Select 10 seconds from the FlashBack Period submenu. Press the shutter button to begin recording while the pitcher prepares. After the pitcher throws the ball, click on the shutter button again to turn off recording. You'll have saved only the last ten seconds of the pitcher's activity.

2 out of 5 stars Meade Can Do Better.......2007-07-20

I recently bought this camera new and also own another Meade Binocular 2002 model that I like much better. Fact: Older one is smaller yet takes brilliant pics. Fact: Is not made with cheap plastic.
I paid $79.00 for my 2002 model. Over $130.00 plus S/H. for this mess. This model is large and very poorly made. Cheap plastic. The LCD screen will not stay in place(flops open & shut)....ruining shots.
Where are the parts made may I ask Meade? Who puts them together?
I plead for Meade to do better. Oh I sound like a poet..plead? meade? lol

Pleased with quality.

3 out of 5 stars When it's good, it's very good...when it's bad, It's pretty bad.......2006-07-01

I did a lot of research before choosing the Meade CaptureView 8x42 2MP Digital Camera Binocular. This one offers the most for a reasonable price. Unfortunately, the one reason you're probably looking to buy it will be nothing at all like what you were expecting.

As binoculars go, the CaptureView 8x42 works fantastic. It's easy to tune to your own eyesight, it's got a sharp, clear field of view, and the zoom level is as good as more expensive pairs I've looked through.

As a plug-and-play device, it's also really good: any computer I've plugged it into responds quickly, and files are easily accessed. There is software you can also use, but generally I don't have to have it in order to download images.

Ah, but there's the rub: the images. Digital binoculars don't actually use the binocular lenses to take a picture. I imagine there's not a way to easily do this, so the camera in the binoculars uses its own lens. As a result, the camera is really poor. Daytime images at a variety of ranges have come out with a milky white haze. Photoshop doesn't really fix this problem because it permeates the image, as if you're gazing through watery eyes or seeing a corona of white. On images that do not produce a haze, you have pictures about as good as you would see on a typical cellphone camera. Except that in low-light conditions, cellphones take better pictures. After taking picures in low lighting, and looking from darkness into a spotlight, I was amazed at how little light actually came through in the final image: even at a short distance, things that I knew to be brightly lit were blurry, grainy, and sunken in murky darkness.

If you are looking for a great pair of binoculars that you can also use to snap simple pictures while you are on vacation, the Meade CaptureView 8x42 is a good choice. If you're looking for a way to grab telephoto-quality pictures of faraway scenes, this will not live up to your expectations--a decent point-and-shoot digital camera will probably do better, especially in multiple lighting conditions.

1 out of 5 stars Bad pictures, bulky to use........2006-04-03

The main reason for buying this camera is to be able to take good pictures from far away. The quality is very poor. The unit is very bulky to carry around your neck. The SD card slot has some block in it. I was not able to even insert an SD card. All in all, not satisfied at all.

1 out of 5 stars awful item, amazon has awful service - beware!.......2006-03-17

I ordered this item as a gift and it wouldn't take any pictures. Very disappointing. I tried to contact customer service here at amazon, and was promised to have a box out to return the item, but now, a couple months later, I have not received any way to return the item and amazon will not return my emails!!!! I am so dissapointed with this shopping experience and now have a broken item AND an extended warranty I purchased. Think twice about shopping through this site!!!

1 out of 5 stars Stay away.......2004-04-27

The first camera died the day after Christmas. The second lasted four months longer, but only because we didn't use it in the interim. The problem was the same in both cases: for no apparent reason, the camera fails to turn on.

1 out of 5 stars Gave it as a Christmas present didn't work.......2004-01-31

Not good a waste of money it didn't work. No power went to the camera so it did not work. Son in Law took it on Vacation useless.

2 out of 5 stars Capture View.......2004-01-09

Instructions very poor. For exam ple, instr. do not tell you that batteries must be in camera and camera must be "on" in order to download to PC. Also not told that if you take batteries out ,will lose any pictures still in camera. Maybe this is elemenetary to a camera buff but not to a novice like myself.

Battery contacts in battery compartment not well designed or installed. Hard to make contact to activate camera. One spring terminal was "bent" when I got camera and had to be straightened to get battery in. Sometimes batteries will make contact and sometimes not.

Judging by the few pictures that I have been able to view, picture quality seems to be good, however.

I'd like a replacement but not sure how to expediently accomplish this.

1 out of 5 stars An item to avoid.......2004-01-04

The Meade CaptureView has two features that should annoy most of us. First of all, it is powered by two AA batteries, but claims to be unable to prevent the batteries from discharging and harming the device if the batteries are left in while the device is off.

Secondly, its USB interface is apparently a version of the USB mass storage standard altered to prevent it from working with anything but Microsoft operating systems. For a company one often associates with scientific interests, active discrimination against users of Mac and unix seems unwarranted.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Lousy, disappointing.......2005-12-27

My sister and her boyfriend bought this for me for Christmas. All of us expected what was viewed in the binoculars would be what was photographed, but no. This is a camera mounted on a pair of binoculars. The camera -- and not a very good one (slow and featurless) -- has nothing to do with the binoculars.

Imagine focusing the binoculars on a bird in a tree at some distance and then snapping a picture. The picture would be of the tree -- not of the bird. Presumably, the bird would be in the photo but the photo would not be what you saw in the binoculars.

One would do much better with a telephoto lens on a good camera.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Engineered.......2004-10-18

This is a poorly engineered product. The first sign of trouble was when I read the recommendation in the user's guide to remove the batteries when the unit is not in use. If you do not remove the batteries, they will discharge in 2 or 3 days. A 50 cent on/off switch would have largely fixed this problem.

The next problem is with the software. It does not work with XP. Meade provides a ridiculous Help Sheet for XP users on their web site, but it only provides jerry rigged half solutions. For all practical purposes the software does not work on Windows XP. I do not know how it performs on other versions of windows.

Then there is the digital camera. With a 50 ft MINIMUM focus and the low resolution VGA camera, do not expect to take the glorious closeups shown in meade's advertisements. The auto shutoff is also a problem. Unit will turn off between shots making spontaneous photography impossible.

This camera/binoculars may have some novelty value, but at 50 to 60 dollars it is not a good value. Meade should be ashamed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Digital Camera Binocular!!!!.......2004-07-04

What a great Innovation!! At a recent baseball game we shot over 200 photo's!! This camera is loaded with so much memory its hard to run out. I recommend it for anybody into sporting events. We didn't miss a shot. The download to the computer afterwards was easy, and the photo's were great! This is a great deal!

1 out of 5 stars Cheap Construction.......2004-06-17

I cannot tell you about picture quality for these binoculars because I couldn't get past the cheap construction. I bought these for my husband for hunting and the races but had to send 2 pair back before even using them. The body is cheap silver looking brushed plastic and it had dents and dings. The battery cover wouldn't even close. That was my first pair. I got the second and the battery cover still wouldn't snap closed. VERY POORLY MADE. Now my husband is disappointed and so am I. I suggest shopping around. I know I will.

Internal timer with no controls? No 'OFF' switch. Turn it and take pics...great. As long as you keep taking pics all is well.If you loose track of the 2 minute window..it turns off! RATS No way to extend the 2 minutes? Looking thru binocs you have no hint (is the camera on or off?)
PROBLEMS:
1) Internal timer-that can be fixed with a firmware download but if you extend the timer to 30 minutes..ya can't turn it off.Well you can by removing the battery cover. And that's another problem.
2) plastic battery cover.A toy .Not long for this world
3)no cover for memory slot or USB port or lens covers (5)
4) Beeper? What beeper? I can't hear any beeper.
5) Battery labels? + and - are confusing for first time

Just turned it on,took one picture..it turned off. Turn it on, take another picture, set it on the counter..it turned off??????
Grrrrrrrrr

Received as a gift, tried first time at a full daylight baseball game. Camera auto-shutoff between pitches makes it impossible to get quick action shots. Difficult to retrieve the photos, due to the poor driver software that locks up your PC, requires disconnecting other USB devices. Defective photos: images have jagged horizontal lines in neon colors bisecting the middle (where the interesting part of the photo should be). The (partial) images below the jagged horizontal lines have incorrect colors - baseball fields are not deep purple! I'm sorry I wasted my time with it.

1 out of 5 stars Not sure I like it yet.......2003-08-26

I opened the box and installed (or tried to install) the software for this piece of equipment, and found that the software loaded ok, the driver installed properly, but the Tutorial WOULD NOT RUN. I am VERY disappointed in the documentation (instructions for the software and technical info for the camera/binocs)! As another reviewer stated, the thing shuts off after 10 seconds of non-use - a pain in the neck when you are out 'birding' and trying to catch the perfect shot - and that is NOT DOCUMENTED anywhere!

I will keep trying with this...I have a trip coming up and plan to take my REAL camera, too. I am sure the technology on these things will get better. I hope to contact Meade and let them know how disappointed I am.

5 out of 5 stars A good camera.......2003-06-07

This camera is excellent for birdwatching & catching those great shots. The perfect picture is about 16 feet from you- I have taken some prize winning photos with mine. It is fixed focus and takes some time to learn to perfect your technique- but by and all I am pleased with the price and the product. My boyfriend also bought one and we enjoy taking pictures together and comparing. A good product- a good price.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on Meade..........2003-05-10

Thank goodness I [paid less], although I don't like throwing away any amount of money. Oh Capture View, how do I dislike thee? Let me count the ways:

1. Binocs cannot be adjusted for someone like me with fairly close eye spacing--camera is in the way, so I cannot fuse left/right images. Duh!!

2. The on/off/shutter buttons are prominent and thus easy to accidentally press...of course this is why the [people] who designed this thing have it automatically shut off after 10 seconds of idling (unbelievable!!). This latter attractive behavior is not (that I could find) mentioned in the instructions.

3. The quality of the pics at "hi-res" is terrible---the product is just [not good] in this regard. Even resting on a support to prevent motion the pics are of such lousy clarity that they are practically useless. My regular digicam at 640/480 produces vastly better images. In fact, holding my digicam up against the eyepiece of my regular binocs and shooting thru the binocs gives much better pics than the Meade pics. This is my big disappointment with the device...I had hoped to get nice hawk pics, but I see it is virtually useless for a subject with any detail at all.

4. The need to reboot the computer after disconnecting the camera, before re-connecting it. Huh?? This makes the USB hot-swap feature useless.

Oh well...whaddaya want for [money]?? My sincerest condolences to those who wasted [more than] that.

Shame on Meade for putting their name on this piece of... And shame on them for absurdly hyping it in their ad copy.
