Very Good Router.......2007-09-21
Just purchased this router a week ago. It was recommended by a tech person. We have DSL service and needed a router that could handle three XBOX360s, a laptop, and a PC at the same time.
Installation was a breeze. We were replacing an existing router and the wizrd walked us through the process in 20 minutes. No manual adjustments were required. Don't disconnect the existing router until instructed to.
Range and performance improved dramatically. No longer have any 'lag' issues with XBOX Live. The blue light on top can be turned off. I have no problem with VPN access for work. Have not experienced any interruptions in service so far.
Like a champ.......2007-09-03
Worked like a champ right out of the box and continues to do so. Easy to setup even in my environment with multiple routers (connected in series).
I like Netgear, but I could not get it to work with Verizon DSL.......2007-09-02
I've never had problems with Netgear products, but I found this unit to be an exercise in frustration. Perhaps it's simply not compatible with Verizon DSL, but despite many emails with customer service, I never got it to work. It's definitely NOT plug and play as my previous Netgear wireless router was, so I give it a major thumbs-down.
Keep your old Netgear router.......2007-08-26
I bought this new router because of the "claims" that it had great coverage in a home. No, worse than my old Netgear router. I have speeds that vary from 54 to 48 to even 24 when I am 5 feet away from the router. I just printed my labels to return it to Amazon. Luckily amazon has a great return policy.
Great Product!! Long Range & works thru walls, too!.......2007-08-18
I love this wireless router! When I first got my laptop, I purchased a Liksys wireless router on recommendation of a sales clerk. It was very difficult to establish a connection. Once I finally got connected thru the help of tech support, I moved my laptop approx. 6 feet and lost the connection! I returned it the next day and purchased my Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router. I can access the internet in every room of my home, which says a lot because our walls are 20" limestone & we have a large home. I highly recommend this product!

BAD PRODUCT.......2007-08-04
I bought the Netgear RangeMax router and the RangeMax USB adapter for a desktop on the second floor. The connection signal is constantly dropping. When I finally get some signal, it is always at "very low". Netgear claims that the range coverage is up to 500,000 feet. I have a 1000 square feet house; the signal is at "very low".
The tech support is NOT helpful at all. After days of frustration, I am giving up. I will never buy Netgear product again. I would give it NEGATIVE FIVE STAR if I can on Amazon web site.
Oh yeah, short Netgear stock!!! With crappy products like these, its shares go down further.
A waste of money.......2007-06-16
I purchased 3 of these adapters for different users. Each user had constant connection problems. Since I wasn't sure at first if the problem was the adapter or the router, I replaced one of the adapters with an internal PCI wireless ethernet card. The connection problems went away for that user.
In addition to really lousy connections, the adapter overheats. It gets so hot, you can hardly touch it. This strikes me as a fire hazard.
Avoid it, if you can.

If you are running Windows XP SP 2, RESEARCH PROBLEMS BEFORE YOU BUY! This thing freezes up my system after about 5 minutes and causes me to have to reboot! This is a common problem as I sadly discovered through Google searches. Downloading the latest driver did not solve the problem. I then called technical support. They had me reinstall the latest driver (again, just like I did last night.) Well, is STILL freezes. His next piece of advice: try it on a different computer. Where am I supposed to get "another computer"? I have one, but it's a Mac!! How would that help me in solving a problem on a machine running Windows? OK, his next and final piece of advice is to run a cable to the router. If I could run a cable through my cinderblock walls (and if I had a long enough one), why on earth would I be buying a wireless adapter? When I said I would return it and get a different product, the tech support guy was practically begging me to let him research it further and then he would call me back in an hour. He would not let me hang up! This was after we were already on the phone for an hour. Uh, buddy, last I checked I was not on the Netgear payroll.
Good USB Wireless Connector.......2007-05-20
This works very well with my Netgear Rangemax wireless router. I replaced an older D-Link Wireless Router and find I get better results by staying with the same brand for both sending and receiving signals. Of course, like all wireless devices you have to try many positions to reach over 80 feet. I will eventually switch to the newer "N" equipment once it has been available of a couple of years.
Overheating.......2007-05-10
It's not reliable. Although it does extend for a fair range, and I've maxed out my DSL at 320 kb/s, it tends to overheat and cut the connection. I've even tried juryrigged cooling, but I suspect it's insulated inside so it's kind of in a pressure cooker.
I'm not going to buy another Netgear adapter after this. Seems like poor design.

Stops working after 7-9 months..........2007-09-26
I just replaced my second one of these. I don't usually buy in store warranties but I did in July 2006 when I bought this for the first time. It went dead in February 2007. But because of the warranty I could get a new on at the store for free. Tonight (September 2007) I exchanged that one for what is now my third one. Every 7-9 months this thing dies. I am not the only one. Search the internet for "Netgear WNR854T dead" and you'll find that this thing dies after 7-9 months for a lot of people. Aside from the dying, the router is fantastic. Netgear's setup and interface are great. Too bad about the dying part.
Solved my issue.......2007-09-22
This product came recommended to me buy a co-worker who had the same issue I did.
I have a two story house which is spread out a bit.
I needed to solve the range issue which I've had with several other devices.
What pushed me to purchase this was the wifi stability in the few macbooks I have around the house. Dell and IBM laptops never had the issue, but my Mac's do. Basically I needed to disable security to make them work when I was not within 20 feet of the router.
For the price, this device has great range, all the basic security features I need, and throughput on the LAN side is fantastic.
802.11n compatibility is nice to have so now apple TV is my next purchase.
Another one bites the dust...........2007-09-16
My second WNR854T died just like the first one did. Suddenly without warning, poof! No internet connection, all hell breaks loose, and lo and behold just the one yellow power light is struggling to stay on. Same issue 8 months ago, and that one was a little over a year old. I guess this is a common burn-out issue. The ONLY reason I started on this NETGEAR path was because the unit was one of the few that had built-in gigabit connections, AND the price (of course) was right. Since then, I've been able to take the defective unit back and swap it out without doling out more bucks. If I had to pay anything, I would look for another manufacturer, like D-Link or Linksys. This unit is on sale at Frys right now for $109, so in a bind I swapped it out for a new one HOPING they have fixed the DEFECT. Isn't it nice to be part of the R&D team of guinea pigs for Netgear? Still waiting for my paycheck from them.....
Poor Product than WGT624.......2007-09-11
This product is not functioning well as my old router WGT624 (more than 2.5 yrs old, purchased on Sep - 2004) and as per buyers expectations & product description. Not knowledgeable NETGEAR customer service for Bell South internet configuration/setup. It took 16 business hours to setup internet & VOIP with NETGEAR WNR854T router. And still wireless speed is lower than my old router WGT624. My Laptop and Desktop dropping wireless connection so many times (close to 100 square feet area). Finally, I frustrated and return this router back to Amazon. I felt that it's a defective product. I spent more time than the router real value.
Worked great until it died.......2007-09-10
I've had this router for ten months, and this morning it just suddenly stopped working. Tried resetting factory defaults, but it won't even stay powered on. Not having the luxury to wait for a replacement, I bought an Airport Extreme. If you're thinking about buying a netgear, save yourself some time and trouble and just set your money on fire instead.

Poor product, backed by unacceptably weak tech support.......2007-09-17
I purchased the WNR834B to set up a wifi hotspot at a local community organization. The router has been defective since day one: every 3-to-15 minutes it drops all wireless signals and resets itself. As a computer engineer by trade, I knew to try a variety of tricks, such as changing the router's location, avoiding any possible EMF interference, trying different channels, upgrading the firmware, etc. The router is simply defective.
Even the best tech companies sometimes ship a defective product, so at first I wasn't too perturbed. I called Netgear, politely allowed the tech rep to walk through a number of basic troubleshooting steps to verify the router was indeed malfunctioning, and expected to be given an RMA (Return Materials Authorization) number to get the product exchanged.
Unfortunately, no. Netgear's offshore tech group seems to have been given one and only one set of marching orders: avoid RMAs at all costs. Two months and three or four calls later, the defective router is still sitting on my desk beside me as I type this review. Netgear repeatedly "escalates" my case, has me re-run the same tests over and over at each step, and instructs me to run extended tests that most networking experts would agree have little chance of unearthing any useful data. My case has been escalated yet again, and I am now waiting for a technician to call me back sometime in the next few days -- Netgear can't estimate when. All to avoid an exchange of a $100 router.
It goes without saying that I can't recommend anyone purchase this product. Tech support for most low-end commercial electronics and technology products is notoriously poor, but Netgear has remarkably managed to lower the bar. As I note from reading the online reviews of this and other Netgear products, mine is hardly an isolated horror story. As such, and until the corporation changes its ways, I must recommend you avoid all Netgear products.
A lot better than people have said.......2007-09-15
First let me say that have Verizon FIOS service outside Washington DC. We've been relatively impressed with the service (30/5), especially in our wired computers. I've been less than impressed however with my wireless laptop connection. The Verizon-provided Actiontec router sucks with wireless so I made the decison to upgrade to this Netgear router for wireless because of the speed. The setup was completely simple and Verizon even helped me out with it which was great. I am using the USB connection for my laptop and the speed difference is unbelievable. I am seeing virtually no degredation in the speed over the wireless from the wired. Before I was seeing at least a 50% drop. I would highly recommend this router.
3 routers--3 failures--in only 3 months.......2007-09-10
We first got this router in June 2007, following the failure of a D-Link wireless router. We have two desktop computers, an all-in-one printer, and 2 (or more) wireless laptops on our home network, all XP. Our ISP comes via a 2ghz wireless transmission. I ignored the CD, since we are on a static IP and I know how to input the numbers. First problem was that the router wouldn't accept Firefox input; I had to switch to IE. Once up & running, however, it worked wonderfully well--very fast on the wired computers, with solid connections for the wireless laptops throughout our 3-story house.
Then in mid-July we left on vacation. Upon return, we discovered the router had completely lost the capability to deliver a wireless signal, despite reboots. So, we exchanged it for another. This one set up flawlessly in Firefox. Again, we were happy campers--for two weeks. Another out-of-town trip and another failure (mid-August now). This time, the home network & wireless signal continued functioning, but it could not connect to the WAN, despite numerous reboots.
We exchanged once again (we were dealing with Staples, which was to our benefit at least), although the router had to be dropped shipped to us--meaning a delay of about 3 days. This time, I remembered that manually entering the IP numbers required IE. But, it didn't take! So, I switched to Firefox--no luck. Back to IE again--third try worked and again we got the fast, stable performance we expected--but only for one more week. At the end of the first week of Sept, our valley experienced some heavy rains & lightning. After one strike across the valley, the router blinked (despite being on back-up power & surge protection) and we lost the internet signal again. Wireless & home network still worked, however.
That was enough. Back to the store, exchanged for a Linksys WRT350N, and we're up & running again. The Linksys does not seem quite as fast, but it's stable and manually configuring the router was a breeze.
Works great even in advanced setups........2007-08-08
I got two of these routers to bridge my livingroom to my office where my cable modem comes in. My last network was supposed to be an upgrade to a/b/g so that I could stream media to my 360 and PS3 more reliably. Unfortunately, the Linksys hardware I bought was horrible.
I got the two Netgear routers and bridged them together so that one resides in my livingroom and is wired to my media center PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.
The setup was fairly straight forward and I found the information I needed on the Netgear support forums.
Speed is great and I have had zero need to reset either of my routers.
Setup freezes. Frequent restarts........2007-07-17
The NetGear RangeMax Next wifi router was a serious disappointment. You begin by inserting the CD which they say over and over. This CD loads a page in your browser; if that browser is Internet Explorer it pegs your CPU at 100% and generally freaks out. It doesn't technically "freeze," but it does slow your computer to a crawl and causes setup to never finish.
Moving into Firefox with the same URL, setup runs but in my case ultimately couldn't get me online. This isn't user error - my SMC Barricade I was upgrading from connected just fine to Comcast, who have an extremely simple Internet arrangement (no locked MAC address, no user/pass, no static IP - just connect to it). After I returned this Netgear I got a Linksys WRT54G instead and that connected in less than 5 minutes, as part of its setup process. The Netgear setup software is horribly broken.
Back to the Netgear process. I had to kill setup and browse to the configuration URL, 192.168.1.1. After serious reconfiguration of the Router I finally got it to connect to Comcast. This took over an hour, caused partly by the fact that every time you make a change to the Router's settings, you get a wait screen. The router completely shuts down, causing you to lose your connection. 30 seconds to a minute later it comes back. Then you can make your next change and sit around another minute.
Do not buy this router. The programmers writing this router software didn't waste their time making it work well for you. Don't waste your time or money on their shoddy product.

Terrible firmware.......2007-09-19
I've had this thing about 6 months now and it has been nothing but trouble. The MIMO radio is acceptible, but almost useless now that the thing is crashing every 5 minutes. I used to have a static IP connection that would only require me to reset about once a week (no reboot button or off switch, only a factory reset button), but since moving to a dynamic ppoe login, I'm lucky if I get 15 minutes before having to unplug and plug it back in. I'm switching back to my linksys 10mb 802.11b router until I can find something new.
The Best!.......2007-09-16
I've had this product for 6 months now and its has NEVER gone down or had any loss of strength even when I go outside on the deck.
So Far So Good.......2007-07-27
This is only my second router I have owned and hopefully the last. The ease of installation was superb. No need to download any installation instructions or drivers manually. Just plugged it in and the instructions (very simple) instantly popped up on the screen. Took only a couple minutes and we were wireless. Even updated the firmware with ease. Thanks Netgear! And by the way, It's a refurb that was $55-shipped!
superb Fast !!!!.......2007-06-22
superb Fast !!!!deliver a steady stream conection, for all PCs with fast connection an multiple users...
I just Love It.......2007-06-19
I have been searching for agood router for over 2 months, I had very different reviews on many routers, some say linksys is better, some say netgear is better ,some say d- link is better.
so what I did , I bought all of them and I install them one by one in my house. they were all easy to install , easy to navigate but for the best speed and the best range . I used the same computers with all of them.the linksys and the d -link didn't have agood rang up stairs for my laptop or through out the whole house. but this route wnr83m is the winner . so I choose it and I returned the rest.

Nice Technology, Poor Quality.......2007-07-01
I purchased this product a few days ago. I spent hours trying to get the router to connect to the internet before calling tech support twice. The second tech person told me to return it - I had gotten a bad router. I find it interesting that, as I searched the internet, this seems to have happened to a number of people.
The second router that I exchange for is working fine. I can set it up as a router or access point for wireless devices. The setup wizard CD that comes with the router walks you through step by step. Each setup option is given a description. (Remember to change your SSID, change the default password, and WEP or WAP secure your wireless connection so the neighbors can't use your internet connection). The setup could seem a little complicated for a person with limited technical skills in that you may have to change your computer's ip address to communicate with the router.
I use Netgear routers, adapters, firewalls, and vpns for my job and they usually perform fairly well (though there are a few compatability issues sometimes). I believe that Netgear has some of the best technology - for instance, with this N router you can get better range than with an equivalent router of another brand. Other Netgears range max routers/access points that I have used can give signals a great distance away, though concrete walls. However, after the bad router, I am concerned about quality.
With the defective router, I would be a little upset if I had not gotten such a good deal - total $70 off with router and adapter purchased together.
Summary: Good technology, questionable quality.
Very Poor.......2007-06-23
I bought this router and spent hours, over two days, with online support trying to get it to work. The support people were helpful but do not work fast. Conculsion, I got a bad router and I needed to return it for another. I got a replacment and after less than three months it has completely died. Urgh! Either the design is flawed or the factory is doing a really poor job making them. Buy at your own risk.
I just love it.......2007-06-19

so what I did , I bought all of them and I install them one by one in my house. they were all easy to install , easy to navigate but for the best speed and the best range . I used the same computers with all of them.the linksys and the d -link didn't have agood rang up stairs for my laptop or through out the whole house. but this route wnr83m is the winner . so I choose it and I returned the rest.
Excellent wireless router, but..........2007-06-07
This is an excellent wireless n router. Signal is great to all my devices and speed is outstanding on my iBook and Intel iMac. I also have a wireless networked printer. Works great with that as well. Setup is easy and for the most part, there are no problems at all... but there is one.
I also have some gaming consoles that I wanted to use it with. Like my old Netgear WGR614, this WNR834M works great with XBOX 360 and the Wii. However, UNLIKE the WGR614, IT COMPLETELY REFUSES TO WORK WITH THE PLAYSTATION 3. Tried updating the firmware for it to see if that might solve the problem. Houston, we have ANOTHER problem. It won't even update for some reason. Groan.
So here's the deal. For a fantastic price you get a terrific router... provided you won't be trying to use it with a Playstation 3. Also, the fact that it won't upgrade (could just be my particular unit) is worth some consideration. Still, if it had worked with the Playstation, I'd be very happy with it.

Customer Reviews:
Great hardware... bad software.......2007-06-11
Router is one of the fastest available. Great for P2P (BitTorrent, Kazaa, etc) applications. Almost everything works great
The one thing that falls very short is the wireless capability. It works great only with wireless adapters that are from the same chip manufacture (Atheros chipset). When used with any other wireless chipset you may have a very hard time.
This is not a surprise as all the other manufacturers such as Linksys, Dlink, Buffalo, Belkin that use the same exact wireless chipset have same problems (probably because of horribly written drivers). Upgrading the firmware helps a lot, especially if you have an Intel-based wireless adapter.
Fortunetly or not, as mentioned other brands use the same wireless chipsets so if you buy any early 802.11N (all as of 2007) most likely will run into the same problems.
NETGEAR CUSTOMER SERVICE IS A JOKE!!.......2007-01-16
I WILL JUST TELL YOU THIS, NETGEAR ROUTERS ARE THE WORST, ALWAYS GOING DOWN, BUT THAT IS NOT THE BAD PART!! THE BAD PART IS WHEN YOU HAVE TO CALL CUSTOMER SERVICE!! JUST TO GET THEM TO UNDERSTAND YOUR NAME TAKES AN ACT OF GOD!, THEN HOURS ON THE PHONE...THEN YOU CAN'T STAND IT ANYMORE AND YOU PAY 30.00 FOR ADVANCED SUPPORT!! NEVER AGAIN NETGEAR, AND BY THE WAY IF ANY OF YOU WANT MY OLD ROUTERS FROM NETGEAR EMAIL ME AND I WILL SEND THEM TO YOU FREE OF CHARGE!!
WPNT834 Great speed and range, simple setup.......2006-11-11
Highly recommended router.
Don't fall for this Netgear knocking because you're not seeing comments from happy customers.
I bought this router from Amazon. The first one was DOA but I have never had a DOA Netgear router before and I've been installing WIFI professionally since 2000 for home and business (Netgear and any other brands you can think of).
Netgear support was extremely responsive. That was a 10 minute call. Exchange with Amazon was smooth but of course it's a hassle packing the thing up and mailing it.
Got replacement and as I expected it is an awesome router and solved my connection problems in every room of a 4 story house. I've never had anyone complain to me about this router. I've installed over 20 of them for different customers before and after I bought my own. The lack of problems is why I bought it for myself.
If you have issues with your connection get yourself a Netgear WPN511 card or desktop adapter to go with this router.
Note: Don't expect to see 108Mbps speed because you won't see it. 54 Mbps is the typical speed. Have found that trying to change WIFI strength or speed settings at the router is not worth the trouble.
Dell tech could not get it work after 9 hours of trying.......2006-11-05
The product was bad right out of the box according to two Dell Techs. I got premission from Amazon to return on 9-14-06, but still haven't gotten the necessary paper work from Amazon aws of today (11-05-06). It seems Amazon now wants to change horses in the middle of the stream and make me jump through hoops to return it. Bad customer service!
Buyer Beware.......2006-10-26
I bought this product (and paid a premium for it) last April, largely based on the excellent online reviews and its fast, long-range wireless capability. It has been a major disappointment. The only way I've been able to use it reliably is by disabling its wireless support and using only the (wired) ethernet ports. I've only been able to get the wireless port working intermittently for one of three of my PCs (two notebooks and a desktop). It either repeatedly drops and reconnects -- even at 15 feet away (Dell Inspiron 8200 w/ 802.11b) or connects for two minutes then locks up the router (Toshiba Portege M400 w/ 802.11g). I am a software engineer and am very patient with technology, but this device has tested my limits. I've tried many forms of "black magic" over countless hours (firmware, software, and driver updates, OS/Network settings, disabling firewalls/anivirus, online support, etc. etc.) but all to no avail. To top things off, I couldn't even couldn't get Netgear's own RangeMax Wireless PCI card to connect from my desktop PC. I've been cut by this "bleeding edge" technology, and now must find a wireless router that actually works.
