Optics and Resolution The Dimage Z2 has a maximum resolution of 2272 x 1704 pixels, good enough for enlargements up to 20 x 30 inches. It also offers 1600 x 1200 (2 MP), 1280 x 960 (1 MP) and 640 x 480 (VGA) resolution modes. The camera's 10x optical zoom lens is a fast f2.8 - f3.5, allowing fast shutter speeds for sports or natural-light photography. The Dimage Z2 features Rapid AF with Predictive Focus Control to ensure sharp images with minimum delay. The Rapid AF system uses a high-speed drive to focus the lens quickly and smoothly--a 0.3 second focusing time at a focal length of 5.8mm and 0.4 seconds at 58mm--giving the DiMAGE Z2 the world's fastest AF among digital cameras with a built-in 10X or greater optical zoom as of January 1, 2004. The Predictive Focus Control compensates for the minute delay from when the shutter-release button is pressed until the image is captured and adjusts focus right up until the exposure is made.

Startup time is a mere 1.8 seconds and shutdown time is 2.4 seconds. After focus has been locked, the shutter-release time lag is 0.06 second -- comparable to a 35mm SLR camera. The Z2 is ready to capture another image in just 1.2 seconds after the previous exposure.

The powerful built-in flash can cover distances of up to 20 feet (6.1 meters) with the lens at its widest angle. Unlike most compact digital cameras, the Dimage Z2 offers extra versatility with flash photography. It has a hot shoe for attaching any of these Konica Minolta flash units: the Maxxum Flash 2500(D), 3600HS(D), or 5600HS(D).

The Real Motion LCD monitor uses a 60 fps rate, showing action smoothly compared to the slower 30 fps rate of conventional monitors. It's also equipped with Konica Minolta's exclusive Switch Finder, a unique system allows the camera's LCD monitor to be viewed either directly or through the viewfinder. Since a single monitor is used, you need not worry about the color, contrast, and resolution difference between separate rear and viewfinder monitors. Select the UHS (Ultra High Speed) option from the rapid shooting menu. The enlarged 32MB internal memory allows the Z2 to capture 15 images at 10 frames per second. When the shutter-release button is pressed and held, Progressive Capture begins saving images in the buffer memory. Five frames are saved with standard continuous advance and 12 frames with UHS continuous advance

nice camera, but bulky!.......2007-09-08

This was our first experience with a digital camera! I love the fact of the zoom feature and it is much more than a "point and shoot". We did experience a problem with the view finder (the window just for one eye) not working for over a year! We didn't take it to anyone to get fixed (the company didn't want it sent back) because it was bought with a gift card and we didn't have the money. All of a sudden,it started working again--don't have any idea why! Besides that my biggest complaint is that it is too bulky for everyday shooting or even vacation shooting. If you want a camera for beautiful shots and want to take your time with it, get this.

Good camera with the Price.......2007-08-28

I have this Camera for almost 3 years. This camera is excellent in daylight but miserably fails in low light. This is my first Digital Camera and I am happy with day light performance but I hate it for pictures taken inside home. Automode never works good. Try manually, setup the shutter speed and aperature it is near perfect.

Great Camera with Significant Weak Points.......2006-12-19

I liked:
-It works seamlessly with Macs
-The flash is easy to control, once you realize you have to manually flip it open
-It has 3 easy modes that make sense: view images, aim through screen, and aim through a sight.
-The zoom works well
-The camera adjusts the contrast and focus automatically and correctly

I didn't like:
- Two of the 4 batteries drain extremely quickly, even when the camera is "off". If you leave the camera alone for a week, you'll have two dead batteries.
- If you want to save batteries, you lose the date very quickly
- The camera asks for the current date before letting you use it
- When the batteries get weak, you get no warning; the current photo or operation fails. The camera may be unable to shut off properly and retract the lens.

So, as a consequence you can't expect to zip out this camera of a drawer and take a picture. By the time you find out which batteries need changing, change them, and set the date, the occasion may be long gone.

Buy them while you still can.......2006-11-27

Even after a year, I still love this camera. I had wanted a camcorder for recording the kids but a friend cautioned that expensive camcorders largely sit on shelves 99% of the time; a camera with video capabilities might be a better value for occasional video needs.

My needs were very modest: 4-megapixel minimum, a decent zoom (optical of course) and the best video capabilities I could afford. After reading reviews, I had initially settled on the Dimage Z3. However, a timely online sale and much better (SVGA) video capabilities "downgraded" my order to the older Z2.

PROS
- A GT 10x optical zoom - apparently this raised eyebrows when it came out
- TV-quality movies with a good built-in microphone
- Color LCD display and built-in speaker for instant video playback
- Quick startup and shutdown - no waiting
- Uses nonproprietary batteries (4 AA), so you don't have to buy an expensive 2nd battery or run back home or to the hotel to recharge, as I have done with my Canon Elph
- Downloadable firmware updates from the Konica website
- Largely automatic and idiot-proof

CONS
- Plastic casing - my Canon Elph is all-aluminum and is of clearly superior construction
- Low light levels defeat an otherwise good auto-focus feature
- The flash must be lifted manually - but this is good when you don't want the flash on and don't want to cycle through menus to turn it off
- Way too many features for me to ever appreciate - I would categorize the Z2 as a near-professional camera. It's not specialized enough for pros but is way too complex for everyday consumer-grade use. Again, not necessarily a bad thing.

You will want to buy larger capacity SD cards (my high-speed 512MB SD cards, even when recording video, hardly ever fill up) and an adapter ring if you use UV or other filters. On this last note, be aware that when I bought my Z2, Amazon recommended a UV filter that was the wrong size, and I bought it without verifying the size myself. I was unable to prove that the mistake wasn't mine (I merely clicked their link and added it to my shopping cart) and I got stuck with the restocking fee. Make sure you do your homework before buying accessories. I picked up a Tiffen 52mm UV filter at a great price - using another website.

In a nutshell, save your money and ignore the hot new camera this year. Unless you take a lot of low-light action shots, buy a Z2 before they're gone. As I write this, this once-$500 camera is still selling for about $150 at various sites. Even though the Z2 is not the newest Dimage model, it's perfect for 90% of my amateur photo and video needs. The video and zoom features alone make it a safe and solid buy, even today.

It takes terrible pictures inside. It's even worse outside. Get ready to spend money on batteries because they will constantly run out. I would not recommend spending $10 on this camera.

It takes pretty good pictures. Easy to use for the most part. The problem is, you MUST read the instructions, as to understand the symbols. But mostly, it takes pretty good pictures. And that's the important thing. Flash could be a bit better though.
