About 50 years ago, an up-and-coming Japanese company was greeted with great skepticism when it decided to compete with the giants that once dominated consumer electronics manufacturing. Today, a fairly unknown Chinese company, which has been manufacturing consumer electronics products for 20 years, is about to change America's perception of the words "Made in China."

The name is Konka, and judging from its debut DVD player, the company has done its homework. The KD-1800U is extremely well made. In fact, it weighs 10.5 pounds--roughly four pounds more than competing models. Although weight isn't necessarily a barometer of good build quality, if you're attracted to metal, you'll love the KD-1800U, which has a solid aluminum faceplate wrapped around a metal chassis lid.

Although the KD-1800U admittedly stands out like an overzealous star amid our other audio-video components, which are all dressed in standard black, we found its brushed-aluminum design to be very cool.

The KD-1800U's silver finish is prone to reflecting light, but Konka still seems to have learned what many other manufacturers have forgotten: big, bright display lights are a distraction when you're watching a movie in a darkened room. Konka uses small, faint-blue LCDs to display disc information such as chapter, track, and elapsed time. An unobtrusive red DVD logo appears in the center of the display, while a tiny green standby button resides in the left corner.

Front-panel controls include open/close, skip forward, skip back, play, pause, and stop, along with a power button that rests flush when engaged. Unlike some front-panel buttons that feel like they're going to fall off if you jiggle them too much, Konka's controls are strong and reliable. The shiny silver disc tray opens and closes smoothly, with no hesitation.

Glancing at the back panel, we were delighted to see the presence of both coaxial and optical digital audio outputs, enabling us to use our preferred coaxial digital cable for DVD playback, while simultaneously connecting the player to an outboard digital-to- analog (D/A) converter for music listening.

Although the KD-1800U doesn't have component-video outputs, we have no qualms with this omission, given the fact that most consumers who are searching for a bargain DVD player don't own TVs with component-video inputs. Konka did include an S-Video input, however, so most home theater enthusiasts should be pleased with the KD-1800U.

Another, perhaps less forgivable, omission is the lack of DTS-compatibility. Depending on your point of view, this is either a gross oversight or a wise decision. We think it's smart, given our experience with several DVD players under $200 that carry the Digital Theater Systems logo but are unable to satisfactorily pass the DTS signal onto an audio-video receiver. Kudos to Konka for playing it safe and recognizing that most consumers shopping in this price range will not fret at the absence of DTS compatibility.

Since all DVD videos are encoded with Dolby Digital audio tracks, the KD-1800U is compatible with virtually all of the movies and concert videos that are available on DVD today. Indeed, Konka's player performed flawlessly on all the discs we played--from action flicks to high drama to U2's Rattle and Hum rockumentary. Although the KD-1800U doesn't offer any video-enhancing circuitry, such as black level expansion, we were satisfied with the player's ability to produce accurate images on our 54-inch rear-projection TV. Contrast levels, colors, and image depth were impressive during both daylight and night viewing, with no digital artifacts or other anomalies that could be attributed to the player's video decoder.

In 5.1-channel Dolby Digital, the KD-1800U's audio D/A converters were equally impressive. Channel separation from center to left and right was detailed, while the surround signal steered its way effortlessly around the room. On music CDs, the KD-1800U was able to reproduce the audio spectrum--from the highest highs to the lowest lows- -better than most DVD players we've heard. Granted, Toshiba and Sony DVD players still reign supreme when it comes to offering exceptional D/A audio converters, but the Konka KD-1800U is the best music machine we've auditioned in this price range.

When it comes to ergonomics, Konka has demonstrated that it understands consumers. The remote control isn't fancy, but it's very intuitive. The select button and navigation arrows are located in the center of the remote, where they're easy to access with a thumb. Stop and play buttons are located just above the select button. A door slides open on the bottom of the remote to load the batteries. It also reveals a setup button, which gives you quick access to the player's most important functions, such as choosing Dolby Digital 5.1 audio and selecting the screen's aspect ratios (4:3 standard, 16:9 widescreen, or 4:3 letterbox). Konka also includes a return button, so you can get out of the setup menu with ease.

The power and eject buttons are isolated at the top of the remote, where they're easy to find, and disc skip, fast-forward, and rewind buttons are clustered together near the upper-left corner. A subtitle button enables you to glide through the options available on a given DVD, while an on/off button makes it easy to get rid of the subtitles if you fail to deactivate them when you start the disc.

The onscreen menus are distinguished by very large letters that are super easy to read--just one of the many thoughtful features that make the KD-1800U a tremendous bargain.

Other rare features include the ability to connect the player to NTSC or PAL TVs, the ability to play CD-Rs, the ability to play DVDs encoded with up to eight audio tracks (including Chinese, of course), and the ability to display up to 32 subtitle languages--from Afar to Zulu. (The audio language and subtitle features are dependent on whether the disc itself offers these options.)

In summary, Konka's KD-1800U is a well-built, attractive, and extremely affordable DVD player that incorporates all of the most important features you'll need for a basic home theater system. --Eric Gill

The Konka player manufanctured by one of china's major TVmakers, boasts notable quality for the price. Aside from the slick silver styling, the 1800U is a fairly typical bottom-end DVD player. One major bonus not found on other inexpensive DVDs is both kinds of digital outputs, optical and coaxial. There's no DTS decoding, however.

It has a very low price with a lot of features that you only see on the more expensive units (S-video, multi angle options, etc.). One of the player's great strengths is its ability to play CD/VCD/CD-R The DD 5.1 seems right on target, but it is not DTS compatiple.

BEWARE: After asking friends and people at work, I have come to question its initial performance. It seems some players have been equiped with a 300MA fuse which blows easily instead of a 350MA one.

I found that the first batch of units had a power supply problem where the player would suddenly stop working, usually with a DVD in it. Konka USA will replace those units free of charge, or you can fix it yourself by replacing and power supply fuse with correct type. Regardless of the fuse, the unit generates a lot of heat. But it seams like the units on sale by Amazon are new enough that the problem has been fixed. I price is an issue and you are not sure about buying a DVD player from an unknown manufacture, try some by Phillips or RCA. Otherwise, spend an extra [money] to get a reliable player.

As mentioned above, the Konka was reviewed in Home Theater Magazine. It received top marks in comparison to those DVD players in its, as well as the next higher, price bracket. The details escape me, but the review said that even if you are an audio-/videophile, this unit would be ideal for use with a second TV (e.g. bedroom). In any case, the performance:price ratio is stellar.

I read a review of this player last year in Home Theater Magazine and man were they right. This player is sleek, quiet, and is comperable to a player closer to $350. It easily plays all DVD's that I own as well as the ones I have rented and plays audio CD's as well without any difficulties. Highly recommended and definately worth the money!

Solid performance for the price.......2007-01-31

I've had this monitor for about 6 months now and have managed to get the color dialed in well for a monitor of this prce point. As to the comments of the reviewer that gave one star:
- the external power supply was not an issue for me (it is not uncommon and saves weight and heat in the unit itself)
- I wouldn't use any monitors built in speakers (I wish they would just leave them out a put the $$ towards making the monitor better)
- The DVI imput works perfectly for me - and it makes a difference in quality).

I am pleased enough with the monitor that I am buying another to run dual with the first one.

Great Deal for the Price.......2006-11-06

I have three of these 19" GEM monitors on my desktop (all hooked to one PC). Overall the image quality is very high. Extremely high quality when you consider the price. Brightness is also extremely high, I run them about 33 of 100 on the brightness. They are decent for gaming, but not as nice as the newer, faster response times.

* Both a DVI and RGV/VGA (15 pin) connector on the one cable. I had issues getting a correct picture from the DVI input, but the VGA is basically perfect so I have not cared.

* None of the current units have any dead pixels (none stuck bright, none stuck dark) One I bought had a bad pixel out of box, but I took it back and Frys gladly swapped it.

* The oldest unit is about a year old, and the newest about 8 months. No problems have come up with age.

* I consider the micro-mini built in speakers to be useless, unless you were just wanting system beeps.

Nice Monitor.......2005-11-14

This is the 3rd GM LCD monitor I have bought over the years (15", 18", 19"). Picture quality is better than some name brands. The price is very low. Highly recommended.

I bought this monitor around 6 month ago. It has following drawbacks:
1. the DVI interface doesn't work at all.
2. the integrated speakers produce low quality sound
3. It needs a adapter
4. Never get the $100 mail-in rebate the manufacturer promised.

Great Idea - Hope for firmware update.......2006-02-16

For what I paid for this unit ($179), I shouldn't be disappointed. There are a bunch of great features on this camera; I love the 2gb hard drive, the handy size, the belt-loop case, the built in MP3 player, the usb charger (yes, the battery charges just by plugging it in to your computer or laptop). What I am not satisfied with is the picture and video quality. Outdoor day-time pictures work pretty well when the lighting is good. You can take a ton of high quality pictures (about 2000 in the 2048x1536 mode). Unfortunately this camera is about worthless in normal indoor lighting. The color is distorted and washed, and there is about a 30% chance to get a focused picture. The flash is at an awkward place (I keep putting my finger over it when I grip the camera), which doesn't matter, because the flash doesn't help the indoor picture problems anyway. I'm hoping that the NHJ comes out with a firmware upgrade which fixes the low light issues. I'm confident the camera is mechanically capable of taking good pictures indoors, because every once in a while I can get a decent photo.

Pretty neat toy for the price.......2005-12-28

I've gotten this little gadget a few weeks ago and I am pretty happy with it. The still image quality is decent, but the lack of a real flash makes inside images tricky. The video looks good too, but has issues with low light conditions. The build in LED lamp is not very useful and has a bit of a blue tint. Run time is 100 to 120 minutes and unit charges pretty quick (2 hrs, either via USB or the power supply). Overall more then happy with it :)

You get what you pay for.......2005-11-30

I disagree with the previous reviewer who panned this item (and also didn't seem to find the 640x480 resolution video mode). For the price it met expectations (and was smaller than I expected). You aren't going to get briliant results with a pocket-sized mpeg4 realtime codec and fixed focus lens. This camera will not replace your DV tape camera - and I don't think that's its intention. It is really compact and lightweight and fits easily in a pocket, and that is its real strength.

Rather than comparing this to tape-based cameras (or even the much larger and more expensive Panasonic HD-based cameras), this camera should be compared to products like the Aiptek range of CF-based cameras. And, having owned an Aiptek previously, I must say that this is much better. The video results are way better than the Aiptek cameras (which use CMOS sensors rather than the more expensive CCD that this camera has). I found the still photo results mixed - when I took photos indoors under strip lighting I needed a very steady hand to prevent blurring, but photos taken outdoors came out well.

All in all, I think that this camera fits well in a niche between the totally crap CMOS cameras, and tape-based video cameras. It won't replace the latter, or your still camera, but if you want a video camera that you can just keep in a pocket or handbag and have accessible all the time, this is about the best one available right now.

**If you are going to by this device, make sure you buy a spare battery and keep it fully charged. The unit will not stay powered up by the usb port while working with it to transfer files to or from. My recommendation is that you give it a full charge after shooting video for more than 2 hrs. Then with your fully charged spare, transfer your audio or video files to your HD. Depending on how many files you have on the unit, transfer times could take up to 20mins via its usb 2.0 port.

I spent a lot of time searching for an actual user review on this product but had no luck. So I volunteered to be the sacricial lamb. I bought this unit as a secondary throw it in my pocket cam. Folks, do yourselves a favor and forget about buying this camera. The video resolution is very poor, the LED flash is a joke and the pics come out blurry 95% of the time. I had really high hopes for this cam but I knew it was too good to be true. The company does a good job of marketing the unit. The presentation on their website makes it seem like the best thing since sliced bread, but it's all just hype. Let me put it this way. Most digital cameras with a movie mode take better video than this unit, which was really designed to be a dedicated DV recorder. It does have an MP3 player and voice recorder and they work ok, but that's not why I bought it. I paid $149 for the unit and would love to return it but the fact is the unit works, just not very well. Not very convincing.......2003-04-11

I bought this camera and my first impression was good. But when I started shooting pictures it changed inmediately. The flash doesn't work constantly (when it's on like it should) just whenever it wants to, the pictures turn to be all dark and blurry except when you take them out in the sunlight. The photo quality is very poor. So I would not recommend this camera for shooting outer pictures. For a web cam is ok. It works but it also needs a lot of light arround so you can see yourself clearly. I consider this product a loss of money but if you want to try it, go ahead, prove it by yourself.

I bought this because of the price and because it looked very portable. It can't take the place of a regular bench in my opinion, but it works fine and folds down to make it easy to transport.

It's a decent bench only it isn't precisely the one in the picture. The seat cushion is much thinner.

The bench is sturdy and comfortable. The rubber slip grip caps on the feet come off easily though.
