Amazon.com Review

Lexmark's X125 is a compact, self-contained multifunction device for your printing, scanning, and faxing needs, and most of your copying needs as well. The scanner uses a feed-through device instead of a flat bed, so pages pass through one-by-one. You can scan them into your PC or make copies in black-and-white or color without a PC. The X125 looks much like an enlarged fax machine, and indeed provides full fax facilities, including speed dial and memory storage for up to 70 numbers.

Paper feeds from a near-vertical tray at the rear to a long pullout tray at the front. Above this is a second (clip-on) tray that catches pages as they exit the scanning mechanism. The machine uses old-style, high-capacity cartridges, which are easy to fit and clip into place.

A two-line LCD eases setup by directing you to, for example, align the machine's print heads before installing the driver software. The bundle includes photo editing and OCR software as well as facilities for faxing. These utilities install easily, but the driver isn't as user-friendly as those typically supplied with the more consumer-oriented printers, lower in Lexmark's price range.

In our tests, printed output was generally good, with sharp black text and finely detailed color prints. Resolution is high at 2,400 dpi, but we could still see fine dots in areas of variable shading. The print times, particularly for text, were low, with a five-page text document printing in just over a minute. Photo printing, at the best quality, took nearly 3 minutes.

Color copies weren't that effective, losing definition and bleaching some colors, particularly magenta tones. While they would be okay for quick copies intended for personal use, they would probably not be appropriate for giving to customers.

As a multifunction device, the X125 is functional and well-designed. It has some restrictions, most noticeably an inability to scan from books or magazines because it is sheet-fed, but still provides printing, scanning, copying, and faxing in one compact device at a good price. --Simon Williams, Amazon.co.uk

1 out of 5 stars drops about 50% of incoming faxes.......2005-09-26

called the Lexmark help line and they determined that the "number of rings" setting is too high--it's about 6 rings before the x125 wants to connnect with an incoming fax machine. Abouit 50% of the fax machines out there abort the fax transmission at just about 5-6 rings.

The help person guided me to change the setting to one ring, so the x125 picks up the fax right away, but the one-ring setting didn't work and the help person ultimately said it is a firmware problem and very expensive to fix at a service center.

Basically the machine is unreliable and now a piece of junk. I just bought a new brother laser fax 2820.

5 out of 5 stars I love this thing.......2005-09-24

I got this today, used from ebay. It works great out of the box. I plugged everything in, faxed something 5 minutes later, made a copy a couple minutes later, scanned something and printed all in acceptable quality. Being as it was used, it didnt bring the install disk so I downloaded them directly from [...] ehich took less than 5 minutes for my OS. It is much quicker and quieter than my previous printer and epson 480sxu which took 4 minutes to print one page in black and white. I love having one machine to do it all. I am a student , a mom and I take care of elderly grandparents, so I like something so simple and easy to use.

4 out of 5 stars Great bang for the buck.......2005-08-06

I was fortunate enough to acquire this little bad boy via ebay for about a buck (minus of course shipping) I was a bit skeptical but I have used all four functions for job hunting, and I have been offered 10-12 jobs. It obviously works just fine. I had trouble aligning the printer cartridge, but that is because I am stupid. Now works fine, not the sharpest printing images, but that isnt what I bought it for.

4 out of 5 stars For the money, a good product.......2005-05-21

No major problems, operates just like it should. Once in a while paper will jam-but for the price -- well worth it

1 out of 5 stars You're asking for trouble if you buy this POS; Look at eBay!.......2005-05-01

I bought my X125 on the clearance table at CompUSA about two years ago. I should have known better. It was brand new and I got it at a great price -- but when will I ever learn that YOU REALLY DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. The driver software quits unexpectedly, forcing me to reboot if I want to print anything. I've written to Lexmark twice about this problem, once online and once via snail mail. I received the same BS answer from them both times. It was obvious they were giving me a boilerplate answer because the text of both replies was identical. They answered as if I was running Windows XP. The trouble is, I had clearly stated I was running Windows 2000, so their so-called "answer" was totally useless.

If you really want to know what people think of this unit, search the COMPLETED LISTINGS for "Lexmark X125" on eBay. Most of the time the item doesn't sell at all. When it does sell, it sells for less than TEN CENTS.

Since donating mine to Goodwill wouldn't be worth the gas money to drive it there, mine's going in the trash and I'll sell my leftover cartridges to the local ink refill store for a buck apiece. Stay away from this thing!

I've had thismachine for about a year and it's done. I tried changing the cartrigdes, now it gives a message saying check cartriges I've called tech support and they can't tell me anything. The cartriges are expensive too. I do not reccomend.

1 out of 5 stars Nothing but trouble.......2006-03-01

This product is so unreliable that I have to print my paper two days before turning in just in case that this machine will not function again.
To its main sins belong these
-errors
-jammed paper
-lack of communication with main computer

and by the way ......... it really sucksssssssss

5 out of 5 stars X-125 works great.......2004-08-31

From opening the box to printing took less than 15 minutes. I also read all of the reviews and wonder who the people are that are reporting all of these problems. This little unit works great (have had it installed for over two weeks) and I get good copies, printing, faxes, and scans. It is not a flatbed so you cannot scan really small items easily, unless you tape them to a piece of paper. However, for the price, or even at twice the price I could not find a better unit. yes, I did download the latest driver, but most of the time you need to do that anytime you get new gear. For me, a great piece of techonology & fair price. Wish the ink was a little less expensive though.

4 out of 5 stars Great Product for the low price.......2004-05-30

Everyone so far seems to have written negative reviews. I use this product simply to fax, copy, scan less than 50 documents a week. It does the job great.
The instructions aren't much good but if you have the common sense to work any fax machine in the first place you can have this out of the box and running in 10 minutes. The fax works great, it scans before calling to save a few bucks, the scanner is slow but is above average for something in this price range. I am a computer professional and once I sorted out a few things the x125 has worked flawlessly with my computer and all applications. For 200 Canadian dollars this things is an incredible value as long as you realize this is obviously for light duty applications.

the driver software dies after 12 hours or so of inactivity and you need to reboot your computer to be able to print again. Lexmark support does not acknowledge the problem and so you cannot expect they will ever supply a fix.

1 out of 5 stars Great if you want to fax 10 pages all at once! .......2004-11-24

This is the worst fax/printer I have ever owned. If you are going to fax more than one page it pulls them all through at once so you have to feed it one at a time! Time to look for a new fax.

5 out of 5 stars X-125 works great.......2004-08-31

1 out of 5 stars Requires too many ink cartridges.......2004-05-26

5 out of 10 print jobs are slanted, maybe because it grabs the paper so hard. I've invested a small fortune in ink cartridges alone. Never have seen a machine similar to this one require so many ink cartridges as this one does. When the message displays "change ink cartridge" you can't get anything else to work, so you're forced to buy more. I'll count my losses and buy a better machine.

2 out of 5 stars How hard is it to feed paper.......2004-03-24

I've had my Lexmark X125 for almost a year now. I'm now shopping for an HP. At least once every 50-100 sheets, the paper feed mechanizm goofs and I have to open up the printer and pull out scrunched paper. And the lines of text on all pages are slightly slanted due to the paper pulling mechanism being on the paper's left side.
The fax/copy feeder slot tries to feed as many sheets at the same time as it can. So to fax or copy a multi page document, I have to feed the sheets one at a time. What a pain.
Ok, one more complaint. This printer, when it grabs a new sheet of paper makes a startling loud noise that makes some people jump.
Pick another printer.

5 out of 5 stars After Xerox and Epson this is a dream.......2004-03-12

I've owned Xerox multi-function lasers and God knows how many Epson ink-jets. All I can say is that the unit has worked flawlessly from moment I set it up (took all of 3 mins.). I've had it about 6 months now. The quality of the color printing is superb. Unlike Epson units that seem to clog up and become useless hunks of color-glob spewing plastic junk if you let them sit idle for a few days without printing, the Lexmark prints perfect, crisp color pages every time - on demand. I will never buy another Epson and would gladly trade the 875DC I have for a single Lexmark ink cartridge!

The printer works well when it doesn't lock up our computer and refuse to print. We have Windows XP, and the printer and XP don't seem to like each other - often, we have to restart the computer when trying to print. We have had no issues with sending faxes but haven't tried to receive them. Copy printing works fine, too.

3 out of 5 stars An okay product........2004-01-27

This unit is fairly acceptable, and since I did not pay much for it, i'm not too worried about what it can and can't do.

Anyways, primarily purchasing this unit in order to fax documents, I find that it faxes acceptably, but in order to receive faxes (if you don't have separate phone lines), I've found that it is not very reliable.

Also, as one reviewer stated, the Lexmark Settings Utility program does not exit quietly when shutting down Windows XP.

The "Scan" feature is OK. However, if you are looking for a scanner, I do NOT suggest the paper-feed scanners, I suggest the scanners that have the open-up top. We used to have one of those, but it broke and we had to buy a new one. This scanner has ripped a hole in two of my pictures when I scanned it. Also, it can only scan certain dimensions. For example, to scan a regular devoloped picture I had to attach the picture to a piece of paper and then insert it into the scanner. Thus, if you have small documents you'd like to scan, I suggest you just get a regular flip-top scanner. Also, sometimes when scanning a picture, I have found that the scanner does not provide an accurate color scan. Some of my pictures have been messed up badly when scanned onto the computer, and when editing them with Jasc Paint Shop they did not seem to come out any better. Even more reason to get a flip-top scanner which seems to give a better scan.

The "copy" feature is fairly well, as stated above you cannot copy documents under a certain dimension.

When printing, the printer has never jammed but some of the documents have been tilted due to the sloppy input mechanism thing.

ALSO, the ink is VERY expensive. I buy re-furbished ink and find I am still paying too much. The ink is also not that easy to replace for the first time (you have to pull out on the cartridges and when I first did it, I felt I was going to break the ink mechanism).

That's about it, I really do not recommend this printer for full use. I primarily use my HP Laserjet Printer for documents, and only use this color printer for items such as greeting cards.

I hope you found this review to be informative and helpful.
:-)

3 out of 5 stars mostly fine but doesn't fax.......2004-01-12

It prints acceptably fast and the quality is good. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't have any software glitches (running Windows XP). It can make copies, I use that quite a bit: but the default is to copy in color - output for documents is much better and the speed is faster if you set it to black & white. Paper feeding is reliable and the envelope printing works well - my HP managed to print envelopes only about 50% of the time without jamming.

The ink is expensive, quite a rip-off.

I never got my unit to fax, I'm not sure what the problem is. Not critical for me, but the fax capability was one reason I bought it.

1 out of 5 stars Avoid.......2003-12-20

I agree with what others say about this unit: avoid it. In fact, I bought a Canon replacement and will install it when the ink cartridges on the Lexmark go empty. Why? The printer does occasionally jam (paper feeding is sloppy, jerky), the driver/software does crash once in awhile and does not gracefully exit Windows XP when I shut down my computer, the ink cartridges are extraordinarily expensive, and the print quality is--at best--mediocre.

I didn't pay much for this thing, so I'm willing to eat my losses instead of buying more cartridges.

1 out of 5 stars Doesn't work, pure and simple.......2005-07-29

Agonizingly slow, wait, drive doesn't spin. A couple megs are copied in 15 minutes and then the drive stops.

Worst drive I ever used.

5 out of 5 stars Top quality CD-RW drive..........2004-08-21

If your looking for the absolute best CD-RW drive out there, this is what your looking for. The Plexwriter Premium has support for any kind of job you need to get done with a CD-R/RW. The drive is suprisingly accurate for ripping audio CDs with EAC, and is capable of making perfect copies for several (but not all) copy-protected PC games. This drive is also capable of high speeds up to 52x, but I believe quality and reliablity over speed for CD-RW drives, so the capped speed of the drive is set 40x (which is default), but can be easily changed using the Plextools software. Talking about Plextools, it allows you to configure several features and settings for your Plextor drive exclusively that you wouldn't find with other conventional drives, such as compacting CDs up to 1GB (GigaRec), password protecting discs (SecuRec), setting spin-down time, tray eject speed, and much more.

I've been using this drive for over a year now and I am very satisfied with Plextor on this one, best CD-RW drive ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Only The Best.......2003-08-30

I agree with Bob Carpenter, i have been using Plextor burners all my life, my first plextor was a 12x scsi, second was a IDE 40x, now i have the 52x. The quality is second to non, plus i never had a problem burning or ripping at max speed.

Plextor drives r the best for making perfect copies. I tried liteon retail and oem. plus samsung burners but they were no good. I used these three to copy the Diablo II play disc and the Command & Conquer 2 cds, a total of 2 tries on each drive, even though they finish burn, when using the cds they dont start the game. But when i use the plextor + the clonecd software i got no problems and playable copied games, for this reason i never had to hack any of the games.

4 out of 5 stars Initial troubles but technical support gets an A........2003-08-02

The features of this drive makes other CDRWs look like child's play. I purchased this drive with the sole intention of making quality backups of my music CDs.

But, I've yet to get this drive to work right.

Techie-speak warning...

I first installed this drive in "slave" mode--as the second drive of the IDE controller--and it worked in mode PIO-4; very slow. So I purchased an ATA133 IDE controller (just for the burner) to have it work in the recommended DMA mode. That didn't help. It would not burn faster than 24x.

I tried several brands and manufacturers of CDRs; both silver and blue azo dye. My other OEM CDRW/DVD drive (Samsung SM-352B) works like a champ with only a 2MB buffer, yet this one at twice the price has been a headache. So, I'm reinstalling WinXP before I send this in for repair...

Update Sep 23, 2003:
Reinstalled WinXP and the problem remained. After exchanging several e-mails with Plextor Support, and several jumper settings later they agreed to replace the drive. Received the replacement--a new unit actually--and installed it. Turned on the machine and there it was in DMA-mode. Uneventful. Plug-and-play. The way it should have been out-of-the-box. It appears I had a lemon.

Although I am taking a star for the bad experience, I am quite satisfied to have found support to be technically knowledgeable of the product, and hassle-free in getting the problem resolved quickly.

The new burner has also turned out excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless burning........2003-05-30

After receiving my Plextor Premium and burning About 25 discs within three days, I have yet to make one coaster. Awesome speed and quality.
