Amazon.com Product Description
Play your favorite DVD movies and record TV programs onto DVD with one component: the Lite-On LVW5001 DVD player/recorder combo. The LVW5001 enables you to burn your own DVDs from a TV source, a DV camcorder, or any other A/V device. You'll get impressively clear video playback from this progressive-scan DVD player. In addition to DVDs and audio CDs, the LVW5001 is also compatible with VCDs, SVCDs, JPEG still images, and MP3 audio files.
A unique feature among DVD recorders, the LVW-5001 comes with a DV-Link (IEEE 1394) connection port that allows you to connect the recorder to a digital video camcorder and digitalize video clips into DVD format that can be preserved forever. In addition, the LVW-5001 uses the LSI-8600 Multimedia Image Processing Chipset to maximize the image quality of recorded programs as well as digital camcorder clips.
The LVW5001 records to DVD+R/RW (it is not compatible with DVD-R/RW) and has four quality modes: HQ (1 hour, 9.5 Mbps bit rate), SP (2 hours, 5.1 Mbps), EP (4 hours, 2.5 Mbps), and SLP (6 hours, 1.7 Mbps).
The back of the LVW5001 has the following connections: RF in/out ports, S-Video in/out, RCA in/out, component-video out, digital out, and optical out.
Tech Talk
- Progressive scan: Also called sequential scanning, a progressive-scan system displays the entire image--providing all the horizontal lines per frame, rather than every other line--once every 60th of a second. This method reduces flicker and increases stability. Progressive-scan viewing requires a compatible digital TV.
- Component video: Unlike a single video input, component video maintains the video signal as three separate signals through these three jacks. This connection provides optimum quality. To ensure maximum picture quality, use three video-grade cables for the Y, Pb, and Pr connections.
- VCD: Video CD (VCD) is a video standard that can store audio and video to a compact disc (rather than a DVD disc) using MPEG-1 compression. You can fit up to 74 minutes of video with audio onto a VCD-formatted CD, but you can expect the video quality to be similar to that of a VHS videotape.
What's in the Box
Lite-On LVW5001 DVD player/recorder, remote control, 2 AA batteries, RCA cable, and user's manual.
Customer Reviews:
Doesn't last.......2005-04-29
I purchased this recorder depending on Lite-on's great name. Unfortuneately right after the warrenty ran out the recorder died. I didn't use it very much at all.It stopped reading DVD +/-R and would only record on DVD+RW for 1 minute before failing. For a Lite-on I expected a lot more than 14 months of minimal use before dying. While it worked it worked great. I would buy an extended warrenty on my next recorder. The life span is too short for the money.
If it would only continue to work.......2005-03-04
I purchased this unit in June 2004 for Father's Day. I loved it. We burned over 200 DVDs with only a few problems. Then after 6 months of use we started noticing a few problems here and there. First it would skip in playback mode, then it not allow me to finalize the DVD, then it recorded the video just fine and dropped the audio.
After 8 months of use, I selected "open" to eject the disk, out came the disk along with a smaller white foam/rubber disk. It was the piece that helps to hold down the DVD while reading and recording (I assume). I took it back to the store (had the extended warranty)and they gave me a new one to replace it. It was DOA right out of the box ("Fail" came up on the LED screen).
I've definitely lost my confidence in Lite-On. Too bad, it was a great unit while it worked.
Nice, Affordable DVD Recorder.......2005-02-12
I bought this unit for my family for Christmas. I was looking for something affordable and easy to use, and something that would produce nice quality. This unit meets those requirements very well. Some here have complained that they have to turn the unit off and back on to make a recording "take", or some such thing. If you read through the directions, it is very easy to learn how to "finalize" a disc after recording it. The only thing lacking on this machine, as far as my purposes go, is the ability to use DVD/-R media. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a sensible, everyday machine.
Great product & price Totally recommended.......2004-11-07
This is my first review on Amazon & I'm only doing this to counteract the brainless knuckleheads who give products on Amazon bad reviews they don't deserve. Almost anything listed on Amazon has undeserved bad reviews from these morons which helps screw up purchase decisions made by people like you & me who use these reviews to help decide whether to purchase anything.
Anyway, the bottom line is this a great and super easy to use very inexpensive DVD recorder (I got mine for $169 new from one of the chain stores)and a moron could figure how to use it in 5 minutes- its that easy and simple, ignore what some of the idiots said here. It copies old VHS tapes to DVD and TV broadcats to DVD with great results & total ease. This DVD recorder burns DVD+R & DVD+RW discs, which is what I've always used anyway. As it copies and records in real time, you should get & use the cheapest DVD+RW discs (I can get them for less than 30 cents each) as it takes the same time to record on a 1X disc as it does a 8X disc. Also you do not need to finalize DVD+RW discs but you do need to finalize DVD+R discs, so there clearly is an advantage using a DVD+RW disc here which as I said are available at the 1X speed super cheap.
Quality issues.......2004-09-23
I got the rebranded Gateway version of this DVD+ recorder while it was on sale. I have a Panasonic DVD-R recorder which is much better: better picture quality, better reliability, and better user interface. Also, DVD "minus" discs are much more compatible with DVD players than DVD "plus," although if you have a new player, it should have no trouble with either format.
The real problem with the Lite-On/Gateway is build quality. The player feels cheap, and it does tend to get hot as some reviewers have pointed out, which is a problem for those of us wanting to keep it in an entertanment center. You literally need to put an AC next to it to cool it during long recordings. Also, my particular unit broke after a few months, so I don't have much confidence in this brand.
You might be better served with a Panasonic or Toshiba, which will offer better quality and reliability (important for DVD recordings) at a reasonable price.

Versatile.......2003-10-24
My previous dvd (an Apex AD1500) broke down mechanically and I needed to replace it. It had to do everything the apex did. It does and more. The first thing I tried was to burn a CD with an XviD file (mpeg-4) and stick it in: IT WORKS! (as advertised). Therefore I don't have to connect a computer or laptop to my tv to watch this format. A minor gripe is that with divx/xvid, I cannot fast forward/go back. Pause works.
Since it will also read my memory sticks directly, No need to connect my Sony camcorder to watch still pictures. The slideshow takes a while to start after you insert the stick (inside a pcmcia format adapter), but once it starts, it is pretty slick.
The display quality is really great on my plasma tv, especially with component video. You can switch the unit to progressive scan.
Mechanically, it feels more sturdy and better adjusted than the Apex, but only time will tell. It seems to run a bit warm and I hope this will not shorten its lifespan.
I actually like the power light, which is on (and red) when the unit is off. That way it is not distracting when you watch a movie and you can easily turn the unit on in the dark.
I may relocate overseas and it is nice to know the unit can work with pal dvds and tvs, and directly on 220 volts as well. In the same spirit it is reputed to be region friendly. I have french dvds (the equivalent of sesame street etc) and I can play them. No extra, imported, dvd player is necessary for me.
It will also automatically play the picture CDs that you get when you develop photographs. The slideshow is very computer-like and rather enjoyable.
I have not tried the mp3 playing capabilities.
LiteOn publishes firmware updates on their web site. You have to download them, burn them to CD and insert the CD, which I haven't got around to ddo yet. I hope the update will fix the divx fast forward/back.
Not that it matters much, but the dvd seems to be running a linux OS. Maybe this explains the versatility.
All in all, I am 100% happy with the dvd player and I fully recommend it. It may be a bit more pricey than Apex etc, but its ease of use and wide set of functions more than make up for this.

Good for a quick fix, but not long term.......2007-08-15
At first this machine was fine, despite not having features found on better known name brands..
But after a few months, I started getting error messages for recordable DVDS that were types that had previously been accepted and listed as compatible.
Now, it won't accept any blank, recordable DVDs.
Getting service was an even bigger problem. I could never get an answer on their phone lines and no response at all to e-mails I sent.
Boo!.......2007-03-19
This thing worked fine when I first got it in December. I've honestly only used it a handful of times. Now it's March and the last time I recorded a TV show it played half of the show and then it gave me a 'No Disc' error. Now every time I try to watch ANY DVD it won't load and tells me there is No Disc. I'm going to suck it up and spend more for a better brand now. I wish I would have done that in the first place. Don't waste your money.
Unhappy with media.......2007-03-05
This machine works well for store DVDs and burning from TIVO, but when I attempt to view DVD-R discs (all types), I OFTEN encounter the dreaded "No DISC" message for discs that play in a variety of other players.
Very dependable, nice product........2007-01-28
This Liteon DVD recorder does exactly what it says it does..... It will record on any brand disc I put in it, a refreshing change from other machines which are picky about what media can be used, with constant "Disc Error" messages.
+R, -R, +RW, -RW, DVD, CD, whatever. And so far I haven't found a brand it doesn't like. When they called this a Write-All, they weren't kidding. Especially for the price, this is an item I could not afford not to buy. The unit I received is a Liteon LVW5006. It is awesome.

AWESOME!!.......2006-01-11
I bought this amp from a local car stereo place. I LOVE IT!! Pure clean wattage and has yet to even get near HOT to the touch. I run in bass competions (DB Drag) and the highest i hit was a 146.7!! with just 400 watts. I just bought another one, with yet another coming in the mail. I need a fourth and I'll be ready. Would (and have) recommend to anybody.
Impressive!!!.......2002-12-29
I picked up one of these from Circuit City a few weeks ago. The first time I tested it I had the gain on a mere 3/5 of the way, and it wasn't a full 2 minutes before I had my neighbors coming outside and asking me to turn it down. This amp provides nice controls for the crossover, a good manual, LOTS of good clean power, and quality construction because after 6 hours of cruising around town at FULL gain it didn't overheat! I absolutely LOVE this amp, and I will recommend it to ALL my friends!

Product Description
Coustic amplifiers take the lead in both appearance and performance. The sleek, polished aluminum provides the framework. It's strong and gives you all the heat dissipation you'll need to keep the amp pounding all night long. The heat shield, with its race-inspired, carbon fiber styling, provides the sizzle. Absolutely not for those who like their amps black and blocky Coustic amplifiers are designed using balanced darlington, triple darlington output sections or the exclusive d-block technology. It's this kind of exotic design that you normally see in high-end home audio, not in your typical car amp. it means that even into low impedance loads, these amps just plain kick. And Coustic doesn't skimp on the materials - bi-polar output transistors are more costly than traditional fet outputs, but offer improved sound quality and reliability. The new 401SE amplifier delivers the cleanest music you've ever heard at any power level in the 12-volt environment. Besides its sleek contoured design, the 401SE amplifier has all the latest and most sophisticated audio features.

Easy and functional........2007-01-09
We purchased the microscope as a single birthday gift versus many little toys and my seven year old, inquisitive daughter not only learn how to use it quickly, she started hunting around for any sort of material; vegetable, insect, spore, the list goes on. How does it work was her next question, you can go in to the details with that...
It is simple to operate, contains the essential, and lenses and mechanic is of good quality. I recommend this product from an early age: if used with care, with some supervision and after-care can last to biology -student level; and you'll have a lot of fun hours and togetherness ahead of you!
The user manual is simple and does not include "how to"; and there are no slides included; but you can find all that easily around.
Great specs........2002-11-24
This scope has nearly the identical specifications to the one I bought for medical school 20 years ago. The optics are just wonderful. What amuses me is the fact that this scope costs 1/4 of what we all paid back then! For the high school, college or med student (not for anatomy though), this should do the trick nicely. For the anatomist, anatomy scopes should be available in the dissecting lab for that purpose.
