Not as good as version 1 but not bad, so far.......2007-09-09
I purchased this mouse to replace my 9-year old Intellimouse Explorer (the very first version), which was showing the signs of old age (double-clicking on a single click, for instance.) This is an OK replacement. As other reviews state here, the wheel is sort of loud and provides noticeably more resistance than the older model. The side buttons are quite smaller than the older mode, which will take time getting used to. Otherwise this mouse feels like the one it replaced.
Overall, however, I am happy that they still make this mouse. It fits into my hand perfectly and I also have not experienced the nightmares that many Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 users experienced (though it may be too early to tell.)
Uhh.......2007-08-07
Well the reviews were accurate, I should have not taken a chance on this one. It simply wasn't designed well enough. The scroll wheel is very loud, and provides too much resistance. The buttons are all pressed too easily for my taste and the side buttons need to be pressed in really far for them to click.
The design of this mouse is there but the basic engineering of it seemed like noone ever tested it. I think that I'm going to return this one and get the equivalent logitech mx400 although that doesn't seem perfect either.
What's the deal with all these new mouses, they can't even do the simple stuff well anymore.
Good but not as good as the previous incarnations.......2007-07-09
Maybe I am getting old and tending to not like change as much as I used to, but the new Intellimouse 3.0 just isn't as good at the previous versions of the Intellimouse.
The old one had the "back" button the left side and the "forward" button on the right side. Now both buttons have been moved to the left side. Adapting to that kind of change should not be a problem; however, the general shape of the mouse seems to have been changed as well, which makes the mouse feel less comfortable than the old one.
The bottom line is that the mouse is still a good Microsoft mouse, but I was a little disappointed with the new shape and the general impression that the mouse was made to a lower standard of quality than previous versions of the mouse.
Having problems with the scrollwheel waking the neighbors.......2007-07-01
I don't know if it's just a defective unit, but the scroll wheel on mine is about 20 times louder than all other mice I've used! IT'S HORRIBLE!
Another annoying thing about the wheel: when pressing the middle click, it travels about 2mm with very little resistance, at which point it finally comes in contact with something solid, THEN clicks. The loose wheel may also be why the scrolling is so rattly.
I'll try to test the wheel on a demo unit the next time I'm at the store.
Very good mouse but unimproved... .......2007-06-26
[First Impressions]
I was excited when they were bringing back my favorite mouse ever! This is nearly the same mouse as the old 3.0. But with a new color and stiffer/noisier detents on the scroll wheel. The actual color is different from what you see in the promo pic. It's actually dark metallic gray, not black as in promo photo. So it's a bit misleading if you wanted a black mouse to match your current computer parts.
[Good Stuff]
What I like is it has extremely soft and easy to press buttons [all 5!]. Probably the softest of any mouse out there--and this makes it feel highly responsive to your clicking. It has nice ergonomic shape and a cool looking red light on mouse's end.
The surface of the mouse is slightly textured [non-glossy], which is great because it prevents finger/hand moisture and gunk from building up on the buttons. The slightly textured surface reduces surface contact with your skin and therefore allows more skin ventilation. This is one small detail I wish more mouse makers pay attention to.
[Bad Stuff]
What I don't like are the new detents on the scroll wheel, which are too stiff and noisy! It makes scrolling feel less smooth and adds more resistance. Soft/quiet detents in the old 3.0 was better. So the new stiffer detents are inconsistent with the soft buttons on the rest of the mouse. Microsoft is better off leaving the detents unchanged from the original 3.0!
I bought 2 of this mouse at the same time. I had to return one for replacement because it wouldn't track well on my semi-smooth surface [Wacome Intuous 3 tablet drawing surface]. So this mouse might be prone to tracking quality inconsistencies depending on what you get.
Another bad thing is this mouse is a bit heavier than my Logitech MX 510 mouse--which is of similar size and function. Everyone prefers a light weight mouse.
Product Description
MICROSOFT Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Platinum -- IntelliMouse Explorer throws out all the old, mechanical technology used in current mice. High-performance optical technology - no mouse ball. IntelliMouse Explorer uses a new optical sensor called IntelliEye. This sensor scans the surface beneath the mouse 1,500 times per second to accurately and crisply track the smallest motion. It works on hundreds of surfaces (i.e., no mouse pad required) and stays precise because there are no moving parts to wear out or stick. No moving parts - replacing the mouse ball with an optical sensor means there are no moving parts to collect dirt, dust and grime, and no ball to be cleaned. 5 programmable buttons Batteries last up to 6 months For PC running Windows 98SE+

Best mouse yet.......2007-07-13
I upgraded from an old explorer model mouse and this mouse has the same great feel. It's optical tracking is great! The software it comes with makes it very customizable as well.
Nice mouse, bad reliability.......2007-06-28
I used to love Microsoft's input devices - their mice, keyboards, and joysticks. Well, I already got one replacement on this mouse because of the buttons not working properly, and only about 8 months later, my replacement is dying as well. Wonder if they will send me another free replacement?
I also recently got a Microsoft keyboard and one of the keys wouldn't work unless you hit it much harder than you needed to hit the other keys! I think maybe all of their quality has taken a nosedive since they moved their manufacturing to China. Stay away from all microsoft input devices, they are no longer quality.
Best mouse for usage, but not long life.......2007-01-26
I really like this mouse, better than any other, but they wear out after a year to 18 months. Still I will continue to buy them because they work best for me. Not a big investment considering how much I use it.
Great, well maybe okay, mouse if it doesn't break.......2006-12-05
When Microsoft came out with this smooth scrolling middle button mouse, I was ecstatic. I had grown to detest the ratcheting action of so many other mice. Some mice I found were setup to click too far apart, others just had very prominent clicks as I'd scroll. Microsoft did what I consider a great thing in getting rid of the clicks. My finger felt like it was just gliding the wheel. I could even flick the wheel hard enough for it to spin for a short while and scroll through my documents even faster. The mouse generally fit my hand although I'd have liked it a bit bigger. I liked this mouse so much, I got two, one for work and one for home.
Unfortunately, all was not perfectly rosy. On one mouse, I found that I'd trigger the middle button often when I was rolling the wheel. Both mice have had their left buttons start failing to the point I have to nearly hit the button to trigger it. The weight of the mouse I'm also finding to be more uncomfortable as time goes on. I eventually threw one away as it had gotten nearly impossible to use, and the second one is headed out the door. And the tilt-wheel never really worked all that well for me.
Now I was going to buy another one of these because despite the above, I do like it a lot. But everybody is going wireless now, and I can only find this in stores in the wireless version. I don't want a mouse that is even heavier so I'll develop RSI, and I definitely don't need a mouse that has to be recharged all the time.
Of all the mice I have own, I've never had a mouse die on me, except this one.
I ended up getting a MS Comfort Optical mouse, which is similar to this one but it doesn't have two side buttons, and its holding up well so far. My advice if you get this mouse, buy from somewhere that you can get a warranty on the mouse, so you can get a new one when it fails.
bad mouse, good instant customer service.......2006-08-18
also had a problem with left clicker thanks to the reviewer here i called microsoft and they shipped a replacement Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 with no charge or having to return the mouse.

Your mouse may be small enough to fit in the palm of your hand, but if you spend a lot of time on the computer, it can have a huge impact on your health and well-being. The Microsoft M03-00045 Wireless Intellimouse Explorer with Tilt Wheel is specially designed for comfort and accuracy, so that while you're working, you won't waste precious time, and when your workday is done, you'll feel as refreshed as when you began the day.

Advanced Accuracy and Performance Features
Featuring high-definition laser technology, the Microsoft M03-00045 offers laser precision as you scroll through your files. Smoother tracking means less strain on your hands and wrists, and higher responsiveness means that you'll quickly notice an increase in your productivity. The mouse offers four-way scrolling with a tilt wheel that allows you to scroll up and down and side to side more smoothly, efficiently, and easily.
The entire scroll wheel tilts from side to side, acts as a button, and reacts to how quickly you roll the wheel to enable smooth, accurate maneuverability. For example, if you're working with a super-wide spreadsheet, you can tilt the wheel from side to side to scroll right and left, without having to click the sheet's tiny scroll arrows. And because the mouse relies on advanced optical technology, you can use it on nearly any surface without having to deal with the hassle of a clogged mouse wheel.
If you work with a lot of digital imagery, you'll love the mouse's magnification feature. With this feature, you'll think that you have a magnifying glass pressed against the screen. With a simple press-and-hold motion, the magnifier enlarges the area of your screen that fits inside the lens. You can easily adjust both the size of the lens and the level of its magnification. The Magnifier works in most programs. (The Magnifier is not compatible with Direct3D API in full-screen mode, media players, OpenGL, and Layered Windows. If you are using Mac OS X, the Magnifier enlarges text and images on the entire screen.) When it's time to touch up photos or fine-tune to some detailed tasks, the magnifier will quickly become your best friend.
The mouse also features advanced Microsoft technologies that help prolong the life of your batteries, which means that you can spend more time working and less time running back and forth to the store. The M03-00045 automatically enters standby mode when it's inactive for a certain length of time, which minimizes unnecessary battery drain. In addition, the light in the mouse's optical sensor illuminates only as brightly as is necessary to provide optimal tracking power. And finally, the mouse features a handy snap-in receiver that plugs in when you're ready to work, then snaps into your mouse when you travel, preserving battery life.
Of course, as its name implies, the Microsoft M03-00045 is wireless, which means you'll never have to hassle with cords again. An ambidextrous, ergonomic design that features a rubber-sided grip gives this mouse a cutting-edge look and feel that will complement today's latest technology. So if you work with a computer that runs Windows XP and has an available USB port, the Microsoft M03-00045 could be the mouse you've always wanted.
What's in the Box
Wireless laser mouse, receiver, 2 AA batteries, software CD-ROM, and user's manual.

It is good for its price.......2007-09-13
I bought this mouse last year from amazon. Now, I am still using it. Even though it does not have "off" switch it consumes less batteries than some wireless mouse. I droped it a few times but it is still working fine (Durable). The bad aspect of this mouse is its receiver. Its receiver is pretty big (Some people might think that the receiver is the mouse). I like this mouse.
This mouse works great!!.......2007-07-11
This product does what it's supposed to do and it does it well! I have bought this for the office and my home.
Wireless Mouse.......2007-01-12
I love my wireless mouse that I received for my laptop. It works great! The batteries last pretty long too. I am very happy with the mouse that I chose.
Good wireless mouse, but ..........2007-01-10
the reason i give this mouse a 4 out of 5 is because of a simple little detail, INTERFEARANCE !!! dont get me wrong now, I've NEVER HELD A MORE CONFORTABLE MOUSE IN MY LIFE !!! but at work i placed the cordless reciver about 2' away from the mouse and reception from time to time was good. Ok could be that i use the mouse at work and at work there's a good deal of R/F walkie talkies (the black heavy ones) and on a constant baisis theres a high level of R/F interfearance. in order to resolve this issue i had to place reciver 10" away from the mouse. But if you purchase the mouse for home use (or if your office has no R/F interfearance nearby) the reception is EXCELLENT !!!! Very Good Mouse !!!
Great tool!.......2007-01-10
This mouse is up to the standard for the MS mice! Everything on it works as advertised. It has a L-O-N-G battery life due to the ability to standby when it's not in use. I especially like the lack of a cord -- less clutter on the desk. The one downside observation I have is the big clunky receiver that plugs into the USB port. You have to find a place to store it. That's a small price to pay for the ease of use and convenience.

Not the best on the Mac........2007-01-03
The cursor was kind of jumpy on my MacBook. I tried for a week and tried tweaking all sorts of settings, but eventually went with a Logitech.
Great mouse, long cord.......2006-11-10
Mouse is great. I was very surprised by the long cord that goes with the transmission receiver. Okay for desktop, not convenient for travel because of the cord.
A bargain.......2006-09-05
This is a great mouse if you buy it at the discounted price. The tilt wheel is fabulous. You don't have to worry about installing software because it is already installed in Win XP. I like that it is light and has extra buttons. Overall it is very good at least for me.
Poor wheel design.......2006-07-23
I think they really botched the design of this one.
I've had so many top-quality mice by Microsoft in the past that I'd no longer even bothered to comparison-shop when buying mice. I just figured, if it's Microsoft, it has to be good. This mouse shattered that illusion.
I use the mouse wheel a lot. Clicking the wheel to smooth-scroll a web page, or to open a link in an new window, are things I do many, many times a day. The wheel is the most important part of the mouse for me. Roll it, click it, it's got to feel right. Well, this mouse has two things seriously wrong with the wheel.
1) It takes about five pounds of force to click the wheel - far higher than any mouse I've ever used. Either that's either a serious design flaw, or I have a defective unit.
2) There's no tactile feedback, no "hills and valleys", when you roll the wheel. I loved the old Microsoft mice - your finger knew the wheel was settled into a valley when you clicked it, and it wouldn't unexpectely scroll the document as you clicked the wheel in the valley position. The Microsoft mice would scroll the document only as the wheel rolled over the top of a hill, never in a valley. (I'd come to loathe Logitech mice, because their wheels would register a scroll at unpredictable points, sometimes right in the valley.) Unfortunately, this new Microsoft mouse gives your finger no idea at all where it is - there are neither hills nor valleys. As you're gathering up that five pounds of force to click the wheel, the tiniest rotation of the wheel might scroll the document before it registers the click. So instead of middle-clicking that link you were aiming for, you've just scrolled it out of the way!
I won't even discuss the locations of the Back / Forward buttons...
Love it!.......2006-06-02
Can't believe it's only 13.99. It's big and comfortable, and the software is automatically installed in WinXP. I like the color too.

Customer Reviews:
1 Star is too many for me.......2007-06-29
I have now owned this mouse for over six months and despite all my efforts I would classify it as the most frustrating computer product I have purchased in my 25 years of PC ownership.
The good:
1) It almost works with my HP Laptop with the built in (Intel) Bluetooth.
2) It is fairly comfortable, but quite hard to pick up. It will slip right out of your hand, and often end up on the floor.
The Bad:
1) When it goes to sleep it takes from one to four seconds to wake from sleep and start responding. It almost always leaves me wondering if it has disconnected again...
2) It disconnects on my Win XP (Fully updated) three to five times a day. I must disable and restart Bluetooth to get it to work again.
3) It has a radically different resolution compared to the built in touchpad. I have been unable to resolve with software settings. This means when the resolution for the mouse is set correctly it takes an incredible Tapdance to get the trackpad to move across the screen. This wouldn't be such a problem except for the constant disconnects.
4) Battery life is the lowest of any wireless mouse I have used. That might be acceptable if it didn't do such a poor job resuming from sleep mode.
5) The price is the highest I have ever paid for a mouse. I felt if it worked as it should that may have been acceptable. I was wrong...
I would give up on it in a heartbeat if I could find another mouse that would not interfere in my environment with the other wireless mice nearby.
Great usability bad energy saver.......2007-03-12
I love the shape of this mouse, the computer's response to it it's good enough and the ergonomical shape it's comfortable enough. What I don't like and became a real problem is the fact that it doesn't have and on/off button and I have a laptop, so two problems happen when I move it with my computer: the batteries keep working and run out, or it would activate my laptop and I would sometimes find it on inside of the case and burning hot, not a good thing at all. I would have to buy batteries for it almost every other month and it became a hassle since it does not tell you it's going to run out of batteries but it just stops responding. On the flip side, my friend has the exact same one but never moves it around and does not have the same problem as I did, so there you go.
BEST MOUSE I HAVE USED!!!!!.......2006-12-29
I have used this mouse for 3 weeks. It is the best I have ever used. I am using it on a Dell M 1710 with Bluetooth. It connects as soon as I turn on the lap top. It is not shaky. I use it for CAD CAM design - programming all day. If it was unstable I could not do that. I don't know how far away I can get with it. I use it on a large desk and it has not had any problems doing that. BUY THIS MOUSE!!!! I am not using the software or the Bluetooth adapter that came with it. I just loaded the batteries and turned it on. The computer did the rest. Instant connection every time. I don't notice the lag that others are talking about. It might go to sleep after a while but it wakes back up most of the time without me noticing it at all. As far as battery life as said I have only used it for 3 weeks but I notice no difference from day one.
Great idea / poor design.......2006-09-05
This is a "ok" mouse if you do not plan to travel with it.
It is very comfortable - smooth and precise. The range is excellent - it works from at least 20 feet away.
However, I wonder who Microsoft was thinking of when they designed it. It is clearly not made for anyone who plans to travel. I travel frequently for business and got this to eliminate the hassle of dealing with the cord. (Wireless Bluetooth mice are great, especially on a plane where you don't have to deal with plugging in a USB.)
It is also nice to use for presentations. You can control your computer from the other side of the room.
As mentioned by other reviewers there is no on/off power switch and the batteries are difficult to remove. I actually broke the spring that holds the batteries in place. It is not desinged for frequent battery removal. (It's difficult to describe, but this mouse uses a spring that is "clipped" in there to hold the batteries. It should use "tabs" which are not able to be easily dislodged. The spring would come out frenquently when remving the batteries. I finally lost it and had to bend the internals to get the batteries to stay in place.)
I have forgotten to remove the batteries and come to find the mouse dead. I got in the habit of carrying extras.
The mouse also seems to lag when not used after a minute or so. I think that it powers-down to save batteries or maybe it's the Bluetooth connection. But, after letting it sit for a minute or so, you have to sort of jiggle it to wake it up. Not such a big deal unless you are using it for gaming.
Recently, I could not get the mouse to stay connected via Bluetooth. It can be found by my laptop, but for some reason it does not stay connected. I have updated the software and drivers. It still does not work. (It's less than 2 years old.)
I am not sure who would benefit from this mouse. It's too bulky and difficult for travelers to use (plus no on/off switch). For desktop users, you are better off using the regular wireless mice as they have less lag.
(I recently purchased the Logitech V270 for travel. This is a mouse that was designed for travelers. Compact design. On/Off switch. Carrying case. It's a little small, but that's a good thing.)
I cannot understand why anyone would buy the Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer for Bluetooth. I am not sure who it was designed for.
Not bad at all.......2006-07-31
I bought this mouse with the keyboard combo...
pros: 1. smooth
2. right left scroll and 2 extra (i use for back and forward browsing)
3. stylish, fits hand
4. works from far away!
cons: 1. changing batteries is quite a hassle
2. connection problems happen every now and then. disconnect microsoft bluetooth fixes the problem most of the time.
3. no on/off switch
4. auto sleep, so you have to shake it a bit wait a few seconds for it to "wake up"

What a waste of money! If you're smart, you'll venture on........2007-07-11
I received this mouse as a gift, and it was nothing but a pain. I've used all different kinds, but this mouse was by far the worst. The lag time to get it back up and running is awful, and I found that if there was any dust whatsoever on the underside, the dang thing wouldn't work until it was completely clean! The only plus side I could even remotely give this mouse is that it is larger, so it would be accommodating for those with slightly larger hands. Unless you feel like cleaning it (and I mean thoroughly) before every use, it's not worth it.
Note: after I got rid of this mouse, I went to Logitech duos and have not had a problem since.
Great mouse.......2005-09-05
I really love this mouse, and was a great upgrade from my old Dell mouse.
Nice Mouse But Newer Ones Are Better.......2005-06-25
This is a nice wireless mouse but I would suggest buying one of the newer wireless mice that Microsoft makes. While this mouse does the job, I feel that the newer mice just fit better ergonomically in one's hand and it's a more pleasant experience. I don't find the new horizontal tilt wheel technology in the new mice particularly useful, but it's another upgrade over this old style mouse.

Building a better mouse -> like building a better mousetrap.......2004-09-24
This is all you really need to know:
(1) The mouse works GREAT. It works just like a wired mouse.
(2) It feels HEAVY due to the 2 AA batteries inside. Although, few actually prefer the added weight as it makes the mouse feel more solid, but most just got tired quicker from the added weight.
(3) I'm on the computer 4-5 hours a day. I change the batteries every 3 months. Get 4 NiMH RECHARGEABLES (2 in the mouse & 2 in the charger) so you'll never be without batteries.
(4) For $17 (lowest price of the year--9/24/2004), this is a BARGAIN.
Overall great mouse, very small complaints.......2004-09-21
I got this mouse with the Microsoft Wireless Desktop Elite for US$105 in Australia, the mouse is a silver Microsoft Wireless IntelliMouse Explorer 2.0 model 1007. Amazon has it at a bargain price, which means you should buy one NOW!
TIPS
Buy it for general everyday use, or get the Logitech MX700 mouse if you are a gamer and it feels comfortable (i found the ridge on the right side uncomfortable).
Install the software and restart before plugging in the devices, this solves some problems.
And remember to uninstall any previous keyboard/mouse drivers or software, i forgot to remove my old multimedia keyboard software and WinXP kept going into standby everytime i used the scroll wheel!!
NEGATIVES
Mouse is a little heavy with batteries, can get tiring with long sessions or gaming.
Far thumb button is a bit far to reach easily, a rocker style switch would have been better.
Third mouse button (wheel) is pretty bad, it takes too much effort to click it without scrolling.
Mouse software has basic functionality to customize the mouse, but no advanced features like Logitech's. Even nVIDIA has mouse gestures in their graphic drivers and they don't even make mice! So i think Microsoft should have spent much more time and money developing their software and drivers.
Software doesn't monitor actual distance from receiver, it says "high" signal quality, but from 2m away it is still "high", keep using it and it suddenly drops to "low". Software recommends a max of 3ft (1m).
Batteries a little hard to remove when replacing them.
The mouse feet are bad quality and easy to scratch, my old $10 mouse had better ones.
Recessed IntelliEye logo on mouse looks cheap, a translucent one or no logo would look cooler (yes i'm complaining about the logo, why? because it cost me over $60 and i've seen $10 mice without dodgy logos)
POSITIVES
Comes with Energizer batteries, did last 5 months before they got low, then they lasted a few more weeks before i had to replace them.
Mouse scroll wheel is fantastic, a small amount of pressure makes it move. But is bad for gaming as it is hard to control precisely like for changing weapons.
Comfortable for my smaller hands, and slight dents for fingers is good. I found the Logitech MX700 very uncomfortable because the ridge on the right is where my ring finger is.
My mouse actually worked at 4.5m (nearly 15ft) away from the receiver! But as soon as the software detects this (takes about 10 secs) it stops working properly!?!
Tracking seems fine for me, i seem to be able to get reasonable control for photo retouching. Maybe you should check the surface you are using it on, it doesn't like transparent or reflective surfaces. I use a 3M Precise Mousing Surface.
If you like buttons then this has 5 (but only 3 are easy to use), but the Logitech MX700 has 8 and much better software.
Don't really notice any lag from 0.5m from the receiver.
Software helper pops up if the signal is weak.
Very quick to resync, press the button on the receiver then device and it is synced immediately.
I can't hear the high pitched noise from the mouse unless i put it to my ear. This is probably because my PC sounds like an air conditioner! You might notice it in a really quiet room.
Some people complained about the delay when moving mouse as it "wakes up", I can't notice it, maybe they fixed it?
Nice matte black finish on the mouse, but it would be better if it was soft touch (like on some Pilot writing pens).
I don't notice any "sticking" on my mouse pad.
The LED angle is quite low so it's harder to blind someone (or yourself) and believe me, it's a VERY bright LED. I can see you looking at the bottom of your own mouse now :) lol

Customer Reviews:
doesn't work with all the programs.......2007-08-23
When I saw this product on amazon, I really liked it, more so for the price. However, I hardly use the fingerprint reader now. Reason: it doesn't work with Windows logon*, MSN messenger and Firefox.... oh did I tell you that Windows and MSN messenger were also made by Microsoft?
*I can log on to windows using fingerprint reader when I first start the computer, but not when login screen appears after a screensaver. I have an IBM laptop with a fingerprint reader which doesn't have the same problem
Unreliable, Problems with security and info.......2006-06-21
I have this reader and the APC Bio-something. And the APC is sooo much better. I find myself teaching this reader my password 9 times out of 10, and using it only shortly after. Perhaps a software issue. Either way, you shouldn't have to think about it. The APC, I am never worrying about...I know it's there and ready. Too late to return this - but beware.
Nifty gadget w/excellent mouse.......2006-02-16
First off, let me say that the price is more than worth it just for the mouse (I got mine for about $35). It has side scrolling, which was new for me, and really nice. The other great thing are the programmable thumb-side buttons, which I have set for Back/Forward--really handy for web surfing. It's a comfortable fit for the average hand. The only weird part, if you're used to an older scrolling mouse, is that the scroll button scrolles smooth (no bumps as you move the wheel), which is something I'll have to get used to. Overall, a great mouse.
As for the fingerprint reader, I think it's a big help. There are plenty of password sites that I rarely use and have a difficult time remembering the password/username for. The reader is great for those, along with other unimportant sites (NOT for sites that require better security measures, i.e. sites that do financial transactions, bank, etc.) While it is a great time saver, there are a couple of downsides:
1) If you forget your password(s) and the reader malfunctions somewhere down the road, I hope you have a REALLY good memory.
2) It only works for Internet Explorer, so all you Firefox, Opera, Safari, Netscape, etc. users are out of luck.
On the whole, the package is a great deal, if you can find it near the price I did.
Might crash your system .......2005-10-29
Mouse functioned properly, however, soon after installation, my computer would crash upon attempt to shut system down. Mouse and biometric device have their own software. Removed biometric device software, no more crashes. Conversed with Microsoft Tec. (polite fellow from India). His help consisted of nothing more than reading from the manual that came with product. Suspected biometric device was defective. Tried new device. Same system crashes. Software conflict issues confirmed. Purchase with caution if you are a windows XP user.
Pretty cool.......2005-10-24
I am just an average user, I check my email and casually surf. I probably average an hour or two a day and I think this thing is super! I got it so I could monitor my child's (15 year old) computer and internet use use. She was getting pretty good at figuring out my passwords. Another plus is I don't have to type in my passwords all the time to sites I visit regularly (i.e. shopping sites, my email,...etc.). Although I have several people in the household it recognizes each one, logging only them in to their individual identities. For the price it is a really handy thing. The one drawback which is really trivial is that sometimes I have to try it a couple times for it to correctly recognize my print, but that is only a couple of extra seconds, compared to having to type my info in every time. All in all I think it was definately worth the money!

Very good if it doesn't break.......2005-04-05
I decided to shell out for what I believed to be a 'quality' mouse after putting up with cheap mice for many years. My first IntelliMouse v3 lasted about 6 months until the mouse wheel started misbehaving. It would occasionally scroll down a single line when I wasn't touching it. It started soft but over a few weeks got much worse. I took it back and got another one. This too lasted about 6 months until the same problem started up. In addition the back button is exhibiting the 'double-click' problem (where it sometimes goes back two pages even though i only clicked it once). And of course now it's no longer under guarantee!
If it wasn't so badly built this mouse would be excellent. It's very comfortable to use and I love the extra buttons. Unfortunately I really cannot recommend it as it is.
Built in obsolescence?.......2004-09-30
I too bought an original explorer mouse and liked it. After about a year it died.
I've had the Explorer 3.0 for about a year, and it has started exhibiting the "double click" problem, which, as has been said elsewhere, renders the mouse almost unusable. I liked the design and usability, but I need to find a more reliable manufacturer...
Liked it so much I bought it three times... but no more.......2004-07-13
In short, I'm writing primarily to second Tinderbox's excellent review on all the PROs and CONs.
Also, if you're currently using this mouse and like the extra buttons, I recommend installing Intellipoint 4.0 instead of the more recent Intellipoint 5.0
More on this below...
quick partial summary of Tinderbox's review:
PROs:
1) good tracking
2) good ergonomic shape
3) well-placed extra buttons
CONs:
1) over time: sticky scroll-wheel
2) over time: left-click started registering multiple clicks when single-clicking
3) quick wear
and now for some of my experiences...
Mouse #1: corded Intellimouse Explorer
I bought the original corded Intellimouse Explorer for Win XP and loved it. It tracked well, felt good ergonomically, and I came to the point where I couldn't live without the added buttons. Personally, I mapped the small thumb button as my "back" button, and the larger thumb button for "ALT-TAB" to recall my last used window.
After about a year, the mouse mysteriously died. I'm not quite sure why, but since I've become so enamored of this mouse by this point, I decided to get another Intellimouse Explorer.
Mouse #2: corded Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
By this time, they no longer sold the exact version of my original mouse. Microsoft released v3.0 of the mouse. The only physical difference I noticed was that the thumb buttons were much thinner than the original Intellimouse, which originally irked me, but I quickly got used to.
Within a year, the tracking started going haywire and the cursor would jump erratically. I tried to clean the contact surface, but it did no good. Trashed it and got... another one...
Mouse #3: corded Intellimouse Explorer 3.0
However, within about a year and half, I experienced the exact symptoms mentioned in the Tinderbox review: sticky-like feeling on the mouse-wheel, additional random clicks registering on the left-click button. The latter problem rendered the mouse virtually unusable.
As silly as this sounds, I was almost considering getting the same mouse again, just because I liked the feel and features, however, Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 are no longer readily available, since they have been replaced by the newer Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 (with Tilt-wheel). I tried v4.0 out at a store and could not stand it. Personally, I didn't like the fact the mouse-wheel moved left-to-right. But on top of that, Microsoft removed the "clicks" on the mouse-wheel, which just doesn't feel right to me. The thumb buttons are also placed a bit higher on the 4.0 mouse which lessens my comfort factor.
All in all, the old Intellimouse Explorers were nice when they worked, but (at least for me) they seem to wear out a bit too frequently. I'm currently looking into the Logitech MX 510.
As for the INTELLIPOINT software:
If you do own or plan to own this mouse, I HIGHLY suggest tracking down a copy of the Intellipoint 4.0 software instead of using the most recent version 5.0
PROs of Intellipoint 4.0:
1) had a larger set of preset options in the pull-down menus for each button function
2) allowed you to input your own keystrokes
CONs of Intellipoint 5.0:
1) reduced the number of preset options, adding a few new ones, but removing a LOT of old ones
2) no more custom keystroke mapping to buttons. For example, I could no longer map my buttons to ALT-TAB or "recall window" with Intellipoint 5.0
This mouse is somewhat old by the time of this writing, but hopefully this info will be of some use to someone.
Solid.......2004-06-28
Just hope it doesn't short out where the wire goes into the mouse like the previous models after about 2 years.
Basically 4.5 stars, but I can't give them 5 now can I........2004-06-12
The mouse is excellent. I've owned it for about a year and a half and I don't think I'm going to replace it any time soon--although the tilt wheel is an interesting idea.
(However, the tilt wheel version seems to have it's own problems based on some reviews--thumb buttons moved back to an awkward position for no reason, and middle button click not working most of the time--goes off to either side, scrolling left/right instead of doing a given action.)
Again I will say this mouse is excellent--it has a practically flawless optical sensor that only causes trouble on very uneven surfaces--such as a ruffled bed sheet. I mainly use it for my desktop, but connecting to my laptop is cake. I have a decent knowledge about hardware and software, and installing programs is no big for me--but this is easily alleviated if you're using Windows XP Home or Pro Edition. You can simply plug the mouse in and you will be able to use it in about 10 seconds, along with the middle mouse button, and two thumb buttons.
Setting up the more advanced features of the mouse takes a few minutes though, and usually requires the use of the software CD (outdated now) or software from Microsoft's website. It normally works well in FPS and other computer games, but occasionally you won't be able to set the thumb buttons or the middle button--which I obviously have to knock off points for, my old mouse's middle button was always fully compatible.
I've barely cleaned the thing--and it's remained in perfect working condition. The sensor never gives me trouble and the buttons still work like brand-new. Especially the scroll and middle mouse button that some people have complained about. The clicks you feel in the scroll wheel are what make this mouse really great in my opinion. Some mouse wheels scroll too easily, or some scroll without any feel to them--this one is perfect and has good resistance to it. The middle mouse button works like it should, with about the same resistance as the two main mouse buttons, and the same quick response. Using it in games (it should work for practically all programmable games) is a breeze.
The ergonomics are great, and the only thing that could really improve is perhaps the height of the mouse. While I love the feel of the hump, it may be too tall. It's slightly large for me, and could be really small for someone less than 5'9" or so with "average-sized" hands. Also, the hump/bump could have been placed further back on the mouse, so it would rest right underneath your knuckles--whereas most of the time my fingers are split in half by the horizontal line where the two mouse buttons end, with a mix between the lower part of my fingers on the hump and my palm slightly touching the back of the mouse, along with the bottom of my hand resting on the given surface.
The mouse looks great, feels pretty good, and is slightly cheaper now if you can still find it--I don't have any significant problems with it--great in Windows ME (when I started using it) and XP.
