Customer Reviews:
Not as good as version 1 but not bad, so far.......2007-09-09
I purchased this mouse to replace my 9-year old Intellimouse Explorer (the very first version), which was showing the signs of old age (double-clicking on a single click, for instance.) This is an OK replacement. As other reviews state here, the wheel is sort of loud and provides noticeably more resistance than the older model. The side buttons are quite smaller than the older mode, which will take time getting used to. Otherwise this mouse feels like the one it replaced.
Overall, however, I am happy that they still make this mouse. It fits into my hand perfectly and I also have not experienced the nightmares that many Intellimouse Explorer 4.0 users experienced (though it may be too early to tell.)
Uhh.......2007-08-07
Well the reviews were accurate, I should have not taken a chance on this one. It simply wasn't designed well enough. The scroll wheel is very loud, and provides too much resistance. The buttons are all pressed too easily for my taste and the side buttons need to be pressed in really far for them to click.
The design of this mouse is there but the basic engineering of it seemed like noone ever tested it. I think that I'm going to return this one and get the equivalent logitech mx400 although that doesn't seem perfect either.
What's the deal with all these new mouses, they can't even do the simple stuff well anymore.
Good but not as good as the previous incarnations.......2007-07-09
Maybe I am getting old and tending to not like change as much as I used to, but the new Intellimouse 3.0 just isn't as good at the previous versions of the Intellimouse.
The old one had the "back" button the left side and the "forward" button on the right side. Now both buttons have been moved to the left side. Adapting to that kind of change should not be a problem; however, the general shape of the mouse seems to have been changed as well, which makes the mouse feel less comfortable than the old one.
The bottom line is that the mouse is still a good Microsoft mouse, but I was a little disappointed with the new shape and the general impression that the mouse was made to a lower standard of quality than previous versions of the mouse.
Having problems with the scrollwheel waking the neighbors.......2007-07-01
I don't know if it's just a defective unit, but the scroll wheel on mine is about 20 times louder than all other mice I've used! IT'S HORRIBLE!
Another annoying thing about the wheel: when pressing the middle click, it travels about 2mm with very little resistance, at which point it finally comes in contact with something solid, THEN clicks. The loose wheel may also be why the scrolling is so rattly.
I'll try to test the wheel on a demo unit the next time I'm at the store.
Very good mouse but unimproved... .......2007-06-26
[First Impressions]
I was excited when they were bringing back my favorite mouse ever! This is nearly the same mouse as the old 3.0. But with a new color and stiffer/noisier detents on the scroll wheel. The actual color is different from what you see in the promo pic. It's actually dark metallic gray, not black as in promo photo. So it's a bit misleading if you wanted a black mouse to match your current computer parts.
[Good Stuff]
What I like is it has extremely soft and easy to press buttons [all 5!]. Probably the softest of any mouse out there--and this makes it feel highly responsive to your clicking. It has nice ergonomic shape and a cool looking red light on mouse's end.
The surface of the mouse is slightly textured [non-glossy], which is great because it prevents finger/hand moisture and gunk from building up on the buttons. The slightly textured surface reduces surface contact with your skin and therefore allows more skin ventilation. This is one small detail I wish more mouse makers pay attention to.
[Bad Stuff]
What I don't like are the new detents on the scroll wheel, which are too stiff and noisy! It makes scrolling feel less smooth and adds more resistance. Soft/quiet detents in the old 3.0 was better. So the new stiffer detents are inconsistent with the soft buttons on the rest of the mouse. Microsoft is better off leaving the detents unchanged from the original 3.0!
I bought 2 of this mouse at the same time. I had to return one for replacement because it wouldn't track well on my semi-smooth surface [Wacome Intuous 3 tablet drawing surface]. So this mouse might be prone to tracking quality inconsistencies depending on what you get.
Another bad thing is this mouse is a bit heavier than my Logitech MX 510 mouse--which is of similar size and function. Everyone prefers a light weight mouse.
Product Description
MICROSOFT Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer Platinum -- IntelliMouse Explorer throws out all the old, mechanical technology used in current mice. High-performance optical technology - no mouse ball. IntelliMouse Explorer uses a new optical sensor called IntelliEye. This sensor scans the surface beneath the mouse 1,500 times per second to accurately and crisply track the smallest motion. It works on hundreds of surfaces (i.e., no mouse pad required) and stays precise because there are no moving parts to wear out or stick. No moving parts - replacing the mouse ball with an optical sensor means there are no moving parts to collect dirt, dust and grime, and no ball to be cleaned. 5 programmable buttons Batteries last up to 6 months For PC running Windows 98SE+

Best mouse yet.......2007-07-13
I upgraded from an old explorer model mouse and this mouse has the same great feel. It's optical tracking is great! The software it comes with makes it very customizable as well.
Nice mouse, bad reliability.......2007-06-28
I used to love Microsoft's input devices - their mice, keyboards, and joysticks. Well, I already got one replacement on this mouse because of the buttons not working properly, and only about 8 months later, my replacement is dying as well. Wonder if they will send me another free replacement?
I also recently got a Microsoft keyboard and one of the keys wouldn't work unless you hit it much harder than you needed to hit the other keys! I think maybe all of their quality has taken a nosedive since they moved their manufacturing to China. Stay away from all microsoft input devices, they are no longer quality.
Best mouse for usage, but not long life.......2007-01-26
I really like this mouse, better than any other, but they wear out after a year to 18 months. Still I will continue to buy them because they work best for me. Not a big investment considering how much I use it.
Great, well maybe okay, mouse if it doesn't break.......2006-12-05
When Microsoft came out with this smooth scrolling middle button mouse, I was ecstatic. I had grown to detest the ratcheting action of so many other mice. Some mice I found were setup to click too far apart, others just had very prominent clicks as I'd scroll. Microsoft did what I consider a great thing in getting rid of the clicks. My finger felt like it was just gliding the wheel. I could even flick the wheel hard enough for it to spin for a short while and scroll through my documents even faster. The mouse generally fit my hand although I'd have liked it a bit bigger. I liked this mouse so much, I got two, one for work and one for home.
Unfortunately, all was not perfectly rosy. On one mouse, I found that I'd trigger the middle button often when I was rolling the wheel. Both mice have had their left buttons start failing to the point I have to nearly hit the button to trigger it. The weight of the mouse I'm also finding to be more uncomfortable as time goes on. I eventually threw one away as it had gotten nearly impossible to use, and the second one is headed out the door. And the tilt-wheel never really worked all that well for me.
Now I was going to buy another one of these because despite the above, I do like it a lot. But everybody is going wireless now, and I can only find this in stores in the wireless version. I don't want a mouse that is even heavier so I'll develop RSI, and I definitely don't need a mouse that has to be recharged all the time.
Of all the mice I have own, I've never had a mouse die on me, except this one.
I ended up getting a MS Comfort Optical mouse, which is similar to this one but it doesn't have two side buttons, and its holding up well so far. My advice if you get this mouse, buy from somewhere that you can get a warranty on the mouse, so you can get a new one when it fails.
bad mouse, good instant customer service.......2006-08-18
also had a problem with left clicker thanks to the reviewer here i called microsoft and they shipped a replacement Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 with no charge or having to return the mouse.

Problems with Microsoft Intellimouse 3.0.......2007-08-07
I purchase intelleMouse 3.0 hoping that it would solve the problem that I had with a similar mouse. At first the mouse worked extremely well exhibiting no sticking. Lately it has been exhibiting some the same problems that I had with the previous mouse. With the first Mouse the scroll bar would move on its own and the would not move smoothly across the page. The problem with the scroll ball is Ok, but now and again the pointer would move so far and stop and and I would have to pickup mouse and and move the pointer again. I am planning to change pad and see if things improve.
the old standard roller-ball mouse.......2007-05-31
the old standard roller-ball mouse - bought one of these just in case. unlike an optical mouse, this one can work on mouse pads with colors and designs. [optical mice need a flat black pad.] not expensive.
Using the scroll wheel will ruin the mouse.......2007-03-26
This review is based on the Intelloumouse 3.0 I bought from this very page at amazon. The label on the back of my mouse says "Product ID 63618-576" which is different from the "model number" given on this page,..but this is what amazon sent me!
I bought one of thse in 12/05. In 09/06 it was ruined because I used the scroll wheel regularly. The scroll wheel is sensitive, so after I used it enough it started to send signals to my computer even if I wasn't using it, but I was moving the mouse around and using only the two main buttons. What happened was there were too many signals being sent and the program on my computer that allows the mouse to communicate with the computer locked up. The keybord still worked fine, but the mouse didnt move. I had to reboot constatnly and start afresh, but the more I used the mouse (even though I had stopped using the wheel), the more it acted up. Rebooting didn't help anymore.
I bought more intellimouse on 9/06 (that's six months ago) from amazon becuase it's cheap and I bought THREE because I knew they were gonna break. Same product ID (63618-576). I decide then that I'm gonna try not to use my scroll wheel at all so as to make them last. So I'm on the first mouse. I use it everyday and two weeks ago, for whatever reason I start using the scroll wheel. I just did. Two days ago, there it goes. This one last only 6 months, and I'm moving on to my second.
I'm not going to buy this mouse again. I'm definteily not going to buy this from Amazon if they're sending me the wrong Product ID. The box doesn't even say the "3.0" part. The box also doesn't give the product ID, but theres a sticker (neither amazon's nor Microsoft's) that gives the same Product ID as that given on this amazon page. Like I stated, the Product ID I gave at the top of my review I got from the label on my mouse. Maybe if I see a basic PS/2 Intellimouse w/ wheel at a store that's clearly a different, newer version, one thats higher quality than this one, I might give it a try, but not this one again, not from Amazon even though for the most part I trust this company.
Best Shape for Mouse EVER.......2006-06-06
First of all, I'd like to begin by saying that I've used almost all the mice out there. From the $60 Logitech G5 (supposed to be the most advanced mouse out there) and the $70 Razor Copperhead and I have to say, none whatsoever, can matchup to the legendary balled intellimouse series.
The shape is ingenius. It is perfect. When I decided to switch to optical, I thought that I can get one that performs as well as the intellimouse but w/o the hassle of having a ball. I thought I could get greater accuracy. However, Logitech mice are very poorly shaped.
They have the fundamental concept of how you are supposed to use a mouse all wrong. And now, MS is actually copying them by stopping production of their Intellimouse Explorer series and coming out with the new laser mice that are shaped similar to logitech. NO!!!!
There were some optical mice that could matchup to the balled Intellimouse 3.0. They are the Intellimouse optical 1.1 SECOND EDITION, and the intellimouse Explorer 3.0. Both of which has stopped production and will bid over $200 on EBay!!!
What I want to do is take the LED or laser out of the current mice I have and put it in my old Intellimouse 1.1a (same as 3.0). Then I will finally have an optical mouse that I love as much as my old intellimouse. =]
it just feels right.......2005-11-19
what happens to Microsoft making all those new mice... the new ones don't fit the palm as nicely as the old one...
also i like the feel of the mouse ball, and the wheel clicking when you scroll it. so my choice excludes all the optical, tilt wheel, and the battery-trouble of wireless.
why microsoft don't make these mouse any more, it puzzles me. it is my best-loved classic mouse.
