Does the basics.......2005-04-19

I just ordered a Palm III online a few weeks ago, and so far I like it. It's easy to use, I entered information in the address and date book field immediately and have been expanding to the memo pad and to do list. A few things I don't like, the alarm isn't much of an alarm. It makes a very faint noise once at the time you set it for and if you don't hear it then you're just kinda out of luck, but as soon as you turn your palm on again, that note shows up with the alarm time and date and description. Also, I got a cord with mine, not a cradle, and it won't connect to my computer (I guess the connecting cable is too old for my 2004 laptop?) and I can't find an adapter, so I haven't been able to connect it to the computer or download anything, which sucks for me, but I don't know if that's a common problem or not. I also got a CD with it which I installed, but without a connection it doesn't help much, but atleast the Palm is user-friendly enough that I could figure out the basics without the CD. For the price they're going now, anywhere from $20 used, I definitely think it's a good deal for your money, good means of organization for someone with a busy schedule who needs addresses and dates at their fingertips. I have it in a case and it fits in my purse fine, not too big or bulky.

The Best For Beginners.......2003-10-08

I have been having my PALM II for more or less 1 year and am very happy with it. The handling of directions, appointments, alarms, to-do's, cocktails, even TV-shows is excellent.
The memory capacity is something limiting when you begin to use 3rd-apps (Irda Remote Control emulation, DocuemntsToGo,etc). The back-light is very shining, and its consumption of batteries (alkalines) is fair (1 pair every month).
I bought this one from a friend that boght it from another friend. i'm the 3d owner, but even so, keeps totally useful, no scratchs and good-looking.
It's some heavy and big (it's not a ZIRE!) but for the beginner that wants to wipe out all the papers and the phone book, it's perfect!
A point important to consider is the size of the screen, in my opnion, is a bit greater than the rest, so the fonts appear more clear and you read them easier.
And finally, the price: It's an old model (it's a Classic!) therefore if you can get one of this, just do it!, it's very cheap for their services.

Palm III has been surpassed by the IIIx, the V, and the new VII. Maybe these newer models will give users a better reason to buy.

Green screen makes it difficult to read and its stodgy design is outdated.

Palm III has a rudimentary database (i.e., Phone Book), it is not completely customizable by the user to have its own fields and data types. They do not offer any extended
memory in the 8 Meg range or above, why. I found technical support lacking is support of my question keeping me on line for extensive periods of time.

Five years!.......2005-09-17

This was my first and only PDA for five years. It served me long and well, without once failing. If you are looking for a basic, reliable, PDA this provides excellent value for the money. To protect it, it is essential to get a good protective case (I used a Rhinoskin), and to have screen protectors (I used WriteRight from Fellowes) at all times. Note that you have to keep it supplied with AAA batteries (always keep a spare pair handy), but unlike my friends who bought a rechargeable PDA whose battery finally died after 2-3 years, this one kept on going.

It is still functioning. I retired it in favor of a Tungsten E2.

It's always a wonderful feeling when gadgets work seamlessly and live up to their plug-and-play promise. The Palm portable keyboard is such a gadget. It's possibly the best hardware add-on for Palm devices currently on the market--it installs easily and helps you increase your Palm productivity.

Installation of the Keyboard application onto the Palm handheld is easily accomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simply add it to the Install Tool on Windows, or the Install Handheld Files in the Mac HotSync Manager.)

Once the app was installed, we were ready for testing at a meeting. We sauntered in and unfolded the keyboard in a flourish--clicking it open from its folded position, laying it flat, sliding the keyboard parts together (it's broken into thirds for folding), and attaching our m100 in a matter of seconds. The attendees at the meeting were suitably wide eyed and impressed with our James Bondian device. (This model of the Palm Portable Keyboard also accommodates Palm VII and Palm III series handhelds--even the Palm IIIc. A separate model is available for the Palm V.)

But the Palm portable keyboard is more than a flashy toy--it's a productivity juggernaut that has some of the best keyboard action we've ever experienced. The keys are not soft and mushy like other keyboards we've tested for handhelds. Instead, they're a bit on the tight side but with a lot of give. Also, the more we used the keyboard, the more we found ourselves shying away from tapping the screen to navigate through a screen or perform actions such as switching applications or opening up the Details section of a Memo or Address Book contact. With the Palm keyboard, you can do virtually all your work without taking your fingers off the keyboard.

The keyboard includes custom buttons for the built-in Palm applications (Date Book, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad). Several keys have added functions, such as the ability to open up the Apps screen, scroll through a screen, or turn on the backlight. You can also customize your own shortcuts list of applications loaded onto your Palm handheld. This is done using the Keyboard app, and you can assign the number keys 1 through 9 (but not 0). After making our designations, pressing Cmd-1 immediately took us to our favorite diversion--YahtC--during a lull in our meeting.

All told, we have nothing but praise for the Palm portable keyboard, not just for the ease of inputting text but also for changing the way we use our Palm handheld. Since we started using the keyboard, we now often travel without any laptop, confident that any degree of writing or note taking during meetings can be handled by our Palm alone. (It should also be noted that we typed this review on our m100 while sitting comfortably at our local coffee shop.) Truly Portable Word Processing!.......2006-09-11

I am a writer who hates lugging a laptop around. My Dell lasts less than 2 hours on a charge, weighs too much and can't be let out of sight without being stolen. It is useless on the road except for setting up in a hotel room. I have a Palm IIIxe I bought on eBay 4 years ago for under $30.00 but used only as an address and date book. I picked up this keyboard in the past few weeks, combined it with a copy of WordSmith for word processing and now I can't imagine being without it. Everything weighs under a pound, fits in a case smaller than a paperback book, runs about 3 weeks on a pair of AAA batteries and has room enough to hold about 1200 pages. Drop it in the cradle when I get home, perform a sync and everything goes right into Microsoft Word without losing any formatting. Add to that how good the action on this keyboard feels and I can't imagine ever hauling my laptop to Starbucks again.

I have had my Palm for about 2 years and bought a keyboard when it was only a couple of months old. I took that one back because it was sold without software. I decided not to buy another one because I didn't want to have to run up to the computer store again.

I'm a journalist, so I'm using my Palm daily now and am always having to pull up the keyboard on the screen. This get's a be a pain when I'm writing a list of interview questions or writing down who I talked to or emailed in a contact log.

The keyboard took less than 5 minutes to install, pop in the CD and add the keyboard will be installed next time you sync your Palm with the PC. I was shocked that it really was that simple.

When I finally have to replace my Palm, I'm definitely going to get another keyboard. This one saves me so much time.

Don't expect a USB cable on this cradle. This cradle is just like the one that came with the Palm IIIx, and that's fine if you haven't upgraded your computer in years, but who has serial ports on their machines these days? To use this cradle you have to buy an adapter and install a driver to run it, and for an old PDA it hardly seems worth the trouble. For the time and energy you spend doing that, you're better off just upgrading your PDA.

This is a very unstable product. Palm customer service could not even find their own documention for this product.

...the performance of this machine is unstable. If you are a user of a hack (a Palm program that can be compared with a TSR of the old DOS - do you remember Sidekick?) or a notification manager program like pToolSet, there is a chance of this program's malfunction. Even after uninstalling pToolSet from my TRG PRO, in a morning, my cradle stopped working without any specific reason. If you can set this machine it up successfully, you can get some convenience from this machine, especially if you have a wireless network like me. But this machine often rejects to work.

Though I don't regularly sync my palm to any of my computers I can see how this cable would be of great use to those who sync to laptops simply because the cradle that comes with the Palm III and VII is more bulky than would be convenient to pack in a laptop case. I, myself, bought the cable as a plain and simple serial interface. If you're a techy doing work with servers or network equipment with serial management available this is the perfect solution. Just grab a terminal program (I use ptelnet), plug in this cable to your hardware and your palm and you're set. Simple and lightweight. Way better even than using a laptop.

With the Palm Hotsync Cable, I am able to sync my IIIxe at home and at the office. It is just the right length, plugs into my PDA easily, and is out of sight/out of the way when not in use. If you have a laptop, this is a must-have product. A great product at a great price.

1) There's no hotsync button. Yes,it can be done ... 2) There's no power plug for recharging the 3C. Note that this is a Palm-made cable... Why couldn't the designer use the same plug design as Palm's own cradle? For short trips I should be able to use just the cable, for long trips I could add my Palm power pack into the travel bag. 3) It's too long. A foot is plenty for a laptop cable. But I could live with a long cable and no way to charge the unit if the first problem was fixed.

I'm eagerly awaiting version 2 of this cable.

Though the Palm IIIxe comes standard with a HotSync cradle, that isn't something you want to carry in your pocket. This cable is the ideal solution if you travel or if you need to sync with more than one PC. The generous 3' cable length is perfect - better a long cable than one that's too short.

Keep in mind that this is NOT a USB sync cable, it's a practical serial device for the Palm III & VII, along with some of the older models.

Read the other reviews here and you'll find other creative uses for this cable, so I won't repeat them here. You'll also see that most of the owners who needed a serial sync cable agree - get this and you won't be sorry.

Tired of using the stylus for tedious "typing" and handwriting on your Palm III series or Palm VII organizer? The Palm portable keyboard not only gives you a full-size QWERTY keyboard for touch-typing on your Palm organizer, but also folds up for portable convenience.

The keyboard folds into a 3.5-by-5-inch case that is only slightly larger than the Palm organizer itself. At 0.875 inches thick, the portable keyboard is a little too large to fit into most shirt pockets, but it will fit into a jacket pocket and takes up very little room in a briefcase or purse. This model of the portable keyboard works with the Palm III series (including Palm III, IIIx, IIIe, and IIIxe) and Palm VII connected organizers.

To set up the keyboard driver, we did not need to consult the instruction manual. We inserted the accompanying software disk into our PC and double-clicked the PRC icon on our desktop. We inserted the Palm organizer into its HotSync cradle and pressed the HotSync button. To open the portable keyboard, we slid its side-mounted thumb-switch down, unfolded its panels, and slid the left and right sides of the keyboard together until they locked into place. With only a little experimentation, we found a sliding support behind the portable keyboard's dock connector, into which we slid our Palm organizer. Then, we started the Memo application on the Palm and began typing. In fact, we wrote a portion of this review using the Memo application while typing on the portable keyboard.

Typing on the portable keyboard is much like typing on a notebook PC. The response of the keys is quite comfortable, and the tactile feedback is satisfying. The keys are also positioned well for fast touch-typing. Note that you can only use the portable keyboard on a firm flat surface; you cannot use it on your lap because the keyboard's center hinge does not lock. We also recommend that you handle the portable keyboard gently, as it is made from thin and lightweight materials.

For people who need to use their Palm for memos, e-mail, writing reports, or any activity that requires entering more than just a few words, the Palm portable keyboard offers a tremendous convenience, especially given its small size and portability.

Is there a downside? Well, you may need a bit of time adjusting to the height of the keys on this new toy. Although it works just as well as the keyboards you've become so fond of, the key height is a bit different.

Some hard-core typists may feel odd about the right shift key being a bit more to the right than they're used to. These are minor quirks however, and nothing you can't get used to quickly.

Also, the little keyboard stand is a bit tricky to set up. You've first got to slide it straight out from the back of the keyboard, then hold it at a 45-degree angle, and flip out the back portion to attach the Palm Pilot. Once you get this process down, however, you'll find that this fragile looking stand does a great job of holding the Pilot in place while your fingers fly smoothly over the keys.

Based upon comments read here, I purchased the keyboard and in no time at all, I was hooked! What a marvel of engineering, I thought. I've used it almost every day since August. No more tapping on tiny keyboards or slow Graffiti for me. Two days ago, with no warning, my Palm began believing the keyboard was the Hot Sync cradle. Error message after error message, reset after reset, each time I put the Palm in the keyboard cradle, it crashed. Called customer service....30 minute wait. They tell me to delete the keyboard software from the Palm and reload. Did that. Nothing. Same error message. Same confusion. Called again. Another 20 minute wait. This time, I am told that it is probably corrupted software, which sounded odd to me because no software was being used except Keyboard and it was brand spanking new. I suggested that it probably was a hardware problem. The technician did not appreciate my expertise. This time I was told to reset the entire Palm. Yes, that's right, push the stylus pin in that little reset hole in the back and erase every single thing and start from scratch. I did that. Took two hours. Guess what? Nothing. Same error message. Same confusion. Called Palm again. Seems it is probably a hardware problem. Needed to arrange an exchange. Took another 30 minute wait. APPARENTLY THIS KEYBOARD IS BREAKING DOWN ALL OVER THE PLACE. CAUTION. THIS HAS ONLY BEEN ON THE MARKET A FEW MONTHS AND THEY ALREADY HAVE "REFURBISHED" KEYBOARDS READY FOR EXCHANGE. It would've been a dream, if it worked. Problem is, it doesn't.

People have complained about how the keyboard delays when typing. I'm a slow typist, so it doesn't bother me too much. But for you fast typists, go to [the product's website] to get the new keyboard driver, version 1.2. It fixes the problem of a delay. Now all they need is something to keep it rigid for typing in my lap. Then it would be perfect.

Although this keyboard shows up in the search list for Palm M100s, Palm insists that the curved shape of the M100's bottom is not compatible with standard III keyboards, folding or otherwise.
