Product Description
You've seen them all around you. The Palm III from 3Com is the organizer that's the size of a deck of cards and small enough to fit into your shirt pocket. Stop struggling to find your datebook each time you need to note an important meeting. With a Palm III you'll have already entered that meeting information and be ready for more. And its 'datebook' has a built-in alarm to remind you of that meeting, so you can focus your attention on the more important matters at hand. The Palm III stores thousands of addresses, to do's, schedules, and personal notes. It stores thousands more items than the Pilot Professional. And the Palm III supports email with its optional Pilot modem, as well as infrared wireless data communication. Imagine keeping up with your e-mail by carrying something the size of a deck of cards! You can keep up with your life without having to carrying a fifty-pound day planner. Unlike most personal organizers, the Palm III comes with a cradle that allows you to seamlessly synchronize your data between the Palm III and your PC. So you can update your PIM software on your PC -push a button- and you and your Palm III are ready to go. Entering information on the road is simple. Write in the information with the stylus on Palm III's award winning Graffiti software or use the on-screen keyboard. One of the disadvantages of earlier PDA's was that you spend weeks entering data, then the batteries fail and you lose everything. By synchronizing the Palm III with your desktop you create a permanent backup. So, no matter what happens to the PDA, your information is always safe. The Palm III has a backlit screen, so you can read and enter information anywhere- in a dark car, a conference room or a restaurant. When you discover how incredibly useful the Palm III is, you consult it frequently.Amazon.com
The tapered design, expanded memory, infrared transceiver for communicating with other PDAs, and flip-top cover make 3Com's Palm III even more of a dream electronic organizer for closet Star Fleet officers and harried professionals. With 2 MB of storage, the wallet-sized Palm III holds 6,000 addresses, 3,000 appointments, 1,500 to-do items, 1,500 memos, and 200 e-mail messages. The installed Graffiti Power Writing software allows you to write on the Palm III using Graffiti's shorthand alphabet. Users can also tap out letters on an on-screen keyboard using a heavy-duty stylus, which is included. Navigation through the core information management applications--memo pad, to-do list, address book, and calendar--is accomplished with six push buttons or by tapping the stylus on the backlit display. Palm OS 3.0 includes more fonts than earlier versions and facilitates drag-and-drop linking to Microsoft Word or Excel. The CD-ROM that comes with the Palm III provides all the necessary software to manage tasks on your desktop, too.The Palm III is PC and Mac compatible (an inexpensive MacPac connection kit is required for Mac users), and, as with the PalmPilot Professional, the Palm III uses the critically acclaimed HotSync technology to exchange data with your desktop PC. The Palm III is packaged with batteries, several useful manuals, an adapter, connection cables, and the HotSync docking cradle. The Palm III has garnered a number of awards, including an MVP and 5-star rating from PC Computing, a four-star rating from Macworld, a Best of 1997 mention from PC Magazine, a Best of Byte from Byte magazine, and a stellar rating from Windows Sources. --Patrick O'Kelley

Green screen makes it difficult to read and its stodgy design is outdated.
Palm III has a rudimentary database (i.e., Phone Book), it is not completely customizable by the user to have its own fields and data types. They do not offer any extended
memory in the 8 Meg range or above, why. I found technical support lacking is support of my question keeping me on line for extensive periods of time.

It's always a wonderful feeling when gadgets work seamlessly and live up to their plug-and-play promise. The Palm portable keyboard is such a gadget. It's possibly the best hardware add-on for Palm devices currently on the market--it installs easily and helps you increase your Palm productivity.Installation of the Keyboard application onto the Palm handheld is easily accomplished during a typical HotSync. (To prepare the app for HotSync, simply add it to the Install Tool on Windows, or the Install Handheld Files in the Mac HotSync Manager.)
Once the app was installed, we were ready for testing at a meeting. We sauntered in and unfolded the keyboard in a flourish--clicking it open from its folded position, laying it flat, sliding the keyboard parts together (it's broken into thirds for folding), and attaching our m100 in a matter of seconds. The attendees at the meeting were suitably wide eyed and impressed with our James Bondian device. (This model of the Palm Portable Keyboard also accommodates Palm VII and Palm III series handhelds--even the Palm IIIc. A separate model is available for the Palm V.)
But the Palm portable keyboard is more than a flashy toy--it's a productivity juggernaut that has some of the best keyboard action we've ever experienced. The keys are not soft and mushy like other keyboards we've tested for handhelds. Instead, they're a bit on the tight side but with a lot of give. Also, the more we used the keyboard, the more we found ourselves shying away from tapping the screen to navigate through a screen or perform actions such as switching applications or opening up the Details section of a Memo or Address Book contact. With the Palm keyboard, you can do virtually all your work without taking your fingers off the keyboard.
The keyboard includes custom buttons for the built-in Palm applications (Date Book, Address, To Do List, and Memo Pad). Several keys have added functions, such as the ability to open up the Apps screen, scroll through a screen, or turn on the backlight. You can also customize your own shortcuts list of applications loaded onto your Palm handheld. This is done using the Keyboard app, and you can assign the number keys 1 through 9 (but not 0). After making our designations, pressing Cmd-1 immediately took us to our favorite diversion--YahtC--during a lull in our meeting.
All told, we have nothing but praise for the Palm portable keyboard, not just for the ease of inputting text but also for changing the way we use our Palm handheld. Since we started using the keyboard, we now often travel without any laptop, confident that any degree of writing or note taking during meetings can be handled by our Palm alone. (It should also be noted that we typed this review on our m100 while sitting comfortably at our local coffee shop.) If you are a heavy Palm user, the Palm portable keyboard is an essential and very cool tool. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

I'm a journalist, so I'm using my Palm daily now and am always having to pull up the keyboard on the screen. This get's a be a pain when I'm writing a list of interview questions or writing down who I talked to or emailed in a contact log.
The keyboard took less than 5 minutes to install, pop in the CD and add the keyboard will be installed next time you sync your Palm with the PC. I was shocked that it really was that simple.
When I finally have to replace my Palm, I'm definitely going to get another keyboard. This one saves me so much time.

Tired of using the stylus for tedious "typing" and handwriting on your Palm III series or Palm VII organizer? The Palm portable keyboard not only gives you a full-size QWERTY keyboard for touch-typing on your Palm organizer, but also folds up for portable convenience. The keyboard folds into a 3.5-by-5-inch case that is only slightly larger than the Palm organizer itself. At 0.875 inches thick, the portable keyboard is a little too large to fit into most shirt pockets, but it will fit into a jacket pocket and takes up very little room in a briefcase or purse. This model of the portable keyboard works with the Palm III series (including Palm III, IIIx, IIIe, and IIIxe) and Palm VII connected organizers.
To set up the keyboard driver, we did not need to consult the instruction manual. We inserted the accompanying software disk into our PC and double-clicked the PRC icon on our desktop. We inserted the Palm organizer into its HotSync cradle and pressed the HotSync button. To open the portable keyboard, we slid its side-mounted thumb-switch down, unfolded its panels, and slid the left and right sides of the keyboard together until they locked into place. With only a little experimentation, we found a sliding support behind the portable keyboard's dock connector, into which we slid our Palm organizer. Then, we started the Memo application on the Palm and began typing. In fact, we wrote a portion of this review using the Memo application while typing on the portable keyboard.
Typing on the portable keyboard is much like typing on a notebook PC. The response of the keys is quite comfortable, and the tactile feedback is satisfying. The keys are also positioned well for fast touch-typing. Note that you can only use the portable keyboard on a firm flat surface; you cannot use it on your lap because the keyboard's center hinge does not lock. We also recommend that you handle the portable keyboard gently, as it is made from thin and lightweight materials.
For people who need to use their Palm for memos, e-mail, writing reports, or any activity that requires entering more than just a few words, the Palm portable keyboard offers a tremendous convenience, especially given its small size and portability.

Amazon.com Product Description
This lightweight keyboard for Palm III and VII handhelds is an ideal accessory for users who get frustrated by hunt-and-peck stylus typing and handwriting recognition software. Its small form factor and foldability keep it portable, while its true touch-typing and full-size keys assure comfort. The Palm handheld portable keyboard also features an integrated docking station and requires no additional batteries.Customer Reviews:
The Keyboard is Mightier than the Pen (and just as handy).......2000-11-16
You've just returned to your hotel room after an important all day conference, your head brimming with ideas. You're a woman (or man) of the 21st century, you've got your Palm Pilot at the ready, and you're all set to record the amazing things that are popping into your inspired brain.
Then, you remember the incredible hassle it is to actually USE a Palm Pilot for this sort of task. Sure, it's OK for notes or quick jots of phone numbers, names, or reminders, but when it comes to pinning down the flow of thoughts, it's a pain in the hand.
Enter the portable keyboard! This little gadget is truly a lifesaver for all Palm Pilot users. After the Palm Pilot, seeing a keyboard folded into a smart zippered pouch may not be very impressive -- until you use it! Everything you need is arranged neatly inside this smart little case, and you get to open it ... just like Christmas!
The Palm Portable keyboard is not much bigger than your Palm Pilot. Yet, waiting inside this practical looking case is an instruction manual, software CD, and the answer to your Palm Pilot prayers: a complete, finger-comfy keyboard. It's so easy to use, you may not even need to read the instructions.
All you do is remove the contents of the zippered case, and unfold the keyboard! When completely unfolded, it's the same size as your desktop keyboard.
Once unfolded, just pop the CD into the Palm HotSync to install the Palm Pilot Keyboard software, and connect your Palm Pilot where indicated. Viola! Now you have the speed and data entry control only a keyboard can provide.
This is a match made in Palm Pilot heaven! It takes only minimal power from your Palm Pilot to run, and it works like a charm. The keyboard is the same size and has the same basic feel as your trusty home PC keyboard. It's small enough to slip into your pocket along with your Palm Pilot so you can take it wherever you go. It unfolds and assembles in seconds, so there's not much wasted time getting those thoughts down when you need to. When you're finished using it, this handy keyboard folds down to a little pocket-sized, eight-ounce packet.
This keyboard makes it easy to take notes at meetings or conferences, or any place when you're away from your desk. You can use it to record lengthy notes at business meetings or to compose and respond to email. It's simple to navigate to your address book, appointment calendar, or any other applications. It also comes with nine user-programmable keys.
The keyboard even saves wear and tear on the Palm Pilot itself since by using the keys you no longer use the screen as much.
And the price is right. It's really a great bargain!
Is there a downside? Well, you may need a bit of time adjusting to the height of the keys on this new toy. Although it works just as well as the keyboards you've become so fond of, the key height is a bit different.
Some hard-core typists may feel odd about the right shift key being a bit more to the right than they're used to. These are minor quirks however, and nothing you can't get used to quickly.
Also, the little keyboard stand is a bit tricky to set up. You've first got to slide it straight out from the back of the keyboard, then hold it at a 45-degree angle, and flip out the back portion to attach the Palm Pilot. Once you get this process down, however, you'll find that this fragile looking stand does a great job of holding the Pilot in place while your fingers fly smoothly over the keys.
The support desk at Palm Pilot is great with resolving any setup problems:...
