Why won't Canon stand behind their product?.......2007-08-24

While the camera looks great, the pictures are sharp and ease of use is attractive....beware the E18 error.

After buying this camera I experienced the E18 error out of the box. The E18 is when the lens locks in the open position for any number of reasons; misuse, sand or dirt, touching the lens while moving and, from what I can tell, no reason at all. I returned the camera for a replacement. The second camera worked for 6 months then, to my surprise...E18 error. I called Canon, sent it back and within a few weeks they repaired it under warranty. Flash forward about a year...E18 error. However, now I have no warranty and Canon wants to charge me $195 to fix what can only be a product defect, not my fault, as I take care of this camera very well.

So instead of sending it in for the price of buying a new camera, I google "E18 error" to see if it is fixable on my own. Surprise! There are entire web pages dedicated to the E18. Wikipedia has a page for the E18 error. There have been thousands of accounts and emails posted from inept and rude Canon service reps and managment (although most people I dealt with were kind, but unhelpful).

After unsuccessfully convincing Canon the onus is on their poor product quality and they should at least fix the camera for me, I gave up my quest and bought a new camera...a Sony, so far so good.

Bottom line: Canon will not stand behind its product. This defect, while not experienced by all, has been experienced by tens of thousands (this fact is from Canon itself). After the warranty is out, they will not help you. They will sell you a refurbished camera for $175....no thanks.

I didn't buy a "disposable" camera, however, that is what Canon is selling. Which is only emphasized by their very established policies in dealing with E18 errors. Buyer beware, and at least do your research.

This is my second identical camera that I've ordered. It's really a great camera, that's why I got a second one for my son.
Even though both are refurbished, no one can tell: they look brand new!
And the price is unbeatable.

searched for weeks for appropriate camera. settled for the canon sd500 when came available locally as never turned on display model at local office supply store. what a great camera. forget all the professional comments about picture edges blurring, color reproduction ablity,etc...this is an excellent, easy to use camera with excellent video capability. it takes excellent regular pictures and videos, but really shines when combined with its underwater casing that worked flawlessly. the clarity of the pictures is easily 200% improved and the ability to take videos that show the fish in motion was incredible. we had another family with us at st. martin and they are buying an sd500 as soon as possible. what a step above any camera i have owned, and the people who market and sell disposable underwater cameras should be run out of business.

I bought this model when they came out.
The best camera I have.
No longer use my camcorder... this will do just fine for DVD or web view.

Don't even hesitate to select this sd-500 model.
You will find the pictures amazingly sharp.
What more can you ask for a small wonder like this?

I use this as my main movie recorder, it's that good.
I do have an expensive Sony camcorder that hardly get used because this baby will do everything I need for internet movies on the website.
It's sharp and bright images will dazzle you.

One thing is strange... The price of this model went up since a few years and the newer models may have more resolution and other features, but this one still beats them all for clarity and color.
Canon don't produce this model anymore (?) and seems like people in the know realize how much better this model was then the new ones.
You can buy a new canon with more resolutions for half price then this older model.

Great Camera.......2007-04-13

This is a very good camera and very easy to use. I have a Nikon D70 and this thing takes night pictures better than my Nikon (I am not a pro hence I may not knwo all my settings). This is also good to capture video, its more compact than your video camera and when you check in, you do not have to take it out like a video camera.

I carry this with me every where! What ever you do buy the leather case for it! I have had it for over a year now. At 11 months the zoom feature quit working, I go thru airport security several times a week, I think the x-ray machines were the problem. I returned it to Canon for repair. They turned it around in less than a week with updated firmware, no charge! I saw Wal-Mart selling these on closeout for under $300.00 with a color printer. I wish I had bought it there. I don't know what model replaces this one. I hope it works as well!

This was a great camera but I'm only giving it 1 star because I've only had it for 14 months and it just stopped working. It is now past the warranty period and will cost me $127 at a minimum to get it fixed.

My wife and I love this camera. We bought it to replace a bulky older camera. This camera takes pictures with the same quality and it is compact which means we take it everywhere we go. It doesn't have all of the features of the bulkier camera but it gets used more.

I've had this camera for 14 months - 2 months past the warranty. Got a sudden E18 error and it's dead now. Google e18 canon error and you'll see I'm not alone - this product can't be trusted - keep shopping!

Great product for the price........2007-08-30

This product is really nice for the price. I just needed a decent tripod for a 3 week trip so I didn't want to spend too much money, but wanted something still nice. I really like the travel bag and how when the tripod is not inside, the tripod section can be folded up and stored under the velcro flap making it less bulky. The actual tripod is better than expected and even works with my Canon D SLR Rebel XTi. It is very light weight which is great for traveling, but it can be a little wobbly when moving so take care when adjusting it so that it doesn't fall over if you have a heavy camera on it. It works great with my Nikon Coolpix S7c also. The mini tripod in the handle is best for smaller cameras, but still a nice addition for certain shots. I also like the flip locks for extending the legs instead of twisting locks. Overall this product is worth the price and more.

Good as a Starter Kit.......2007-06-12

My concern is the bag. Very uncorfortable when you are carrying the camera and the Tripod at the same time. The bag is for a small camera not for a slr, I have to detach the lens from my Nikon N60 because barely fit in there.
The tripod is very light, is easy to use and is worthy considering the price. But if you are looking for one more strong and steady this is not for you.

An Altoid box of utility and fun.......2007-06-21

This camera, which does fit in an Altoid box, has been a pocket companion of mine, ever since I bought it to replace my Pentax Optio S4. Yes, it is slow to the starting gate, but, in the bracketing or burst mode, there is some relief from this problem. That slowness cost it five stars from me. Intuitive controls, easy to learn. Great color. Prints are excellent. Low light and bright light handled about average. I'm a Canon fan for larger point and shoots, and have a digital Minolta SLR (yes, I know, they went out of business)--but this little charmer is what I carry day to day.

I am generally happy with the camera and quality of the pictures, but the start up time and the shutter lag are some of the slowest I've seen. My family has 6 p/s cameras from all different manufacters and this Optio is the worst.

I just don't understand why the companies promote "face recognition system", "anti shake",and high megamixel when what we really want is a camera that will take a shot when you press the button!

Just the Bag I Was Looking For.......2006-11-11

After reading the reviews for the Canon PSC-75 bag, I decided I needed something larger for my S3 IS. The Pro Power bag is just about right.

I "test-loaded" it with my PS S3 IS (with adapter "snout", lens hood, and strap), an extra set of batteries plus Canon charger, 2 filters (in their plastic cases), a close-up lens, lens wrench, the MANUAL, spare dust cap, dust brush, spare SD memory card, and USB cable. With the expansion pocket extended, the bag was truly stuffed. But everything fit and the padding was NOT so compressed that it no longer offered protection.

With the expansion pocket not extended, you'll need to leave some things at home. But it will still easily handle the S3 (with adapter "snout", lens hood, and strap), the MANUAL, a set of spair batteries, an extra SD card, and a couple of filters. Probably all you need for the next party or a day hike.

The shoulder strap is not padded, but who really needs a pad with such a light load? The waist strap lives in its own snap-shut pouch on the bag, so it's handy if you want it and invisible if you don't. The bag is not advertised as being waterproof ... but that's why the Good Lord gave us plastic grocery bags, right? I haven't banged things around in it yet, in the field, but the bag seems to be very well constructed and the padding seems fine.

I had one glitch with shipping. The USPS swallowed my first bag. (Can I write a review of the USPS here?) The people at Accessory Genie were GREAT when the bag failed to arrive in a reasonable amount of time. A second bag was sent (via UPS) and it arrived two days after they sent it. They stayed in continuous contact with me. (Five stars for A.G., too.)

Very Easy to setup.......2007-05-11

Bought this flash and grip for my fuji s7000. could'nt find one that was specific to this camera but tried this anyway. Results were very very good - night and day difference from using built in flash and set up was very straight forward. Plus side I did'nt have to worry about other flashes having voltage issues or needing adapters. Flash is very quick to be on the ready status - still playing with it to see how long battery lasts but otherwiswe excelent purchase. Took a while to get here but the wait was worth it.
