Amazon.com Product Description
With its handy MP3 song-search feature and pocket-friendly size, Memorex's MPD8081 takes full advantage of the tiny 3-inch (8 cm) CD-R format, playing full-quality CD tracks as well as MP3 compressed-music files. An 8 cm disc holds more than three hours of compressed music (compared with about 21 minutes of CD-quality PCM audio). Memorex boasts nearly two minutes of electronic skip protection (ESP) in MP3 mode (45 seconds for PCM), so the device is ready to go anywhere you do.
The MPD8081's search feature lets you hunt for tunes by subject, title, or artist. The player also offers 64-selection programming memory (program by track or album), multi-session-disc playback, random play, repeat play (one/all), and a single-bit digital-to-analog converter for optimal sound quality. The player comes with compact earbud headphones.
Customer Reviews:
The worst player there is...........2007-03-02
This thing worked for 5 days after I bought it...stone age and not worth the money.
You can do much better........2006-08-15
Pros: Plays music in a standard format on standard discs (no MTP or other proprietary systems to deal with.) Cheap.
Cons: TOO cheap. Old and outdated. Limited format support (no WMA for example.)
Oh wow! These things are still being sold? I bought one years ago when it was a brand new thing. Back then it was good because flash-based MP3 players used the MTP-style proprietary method of transfering files so they were a pain to work with (not to mention that back then 256MB of flash was "high end" and extremely expensive.) Today you can do a lot better and frankly I recommend against buying this. I'll write from memory what I remember (I gave it away a long time ago.)
First, it doesn't remember any settings. I can't remember where it left off, and it doesn't remember settings like shuffle. That means that every time you start it, unless you go through the 5 or so button presses it required to enable the correct shuffle mode, it would play your music in the same order.
To make things worse, the displays do seem to be made more cheaply or something. I too had one where the display simply stopped working after about a month or so. While with most MP3 players a broken display is hardly fatal (you need to hear a lot more than you need to see) the fact that it couldn't remember any settings or where you left off and that it required you to go through several button presses to enable basic options such as shuffle made it become all but completely unusable since I wasn't aware I needed to memorize the exact key presses to do such things. If you want to play something in order this is fine, but, unless you rotate your discs very often, going in order will get old very fast.
Also, I recently tried to help the person transfer an audiobook to the player. In an effort to make the files fit on a single disc, I elected to decrease quality somewhat. I used low bitrates, mono, and 22KHz audio. All I got out was silence though. Officially it supports sample rates from 8KHz to 48KHz, so I guess it just won't allow mono.
Finally, if I remember correctly, I would occasionally actually get skipping despite the skip protection. If I recall correctly, it was certain VBR files it would skip on. I think I had the impression that it was primarily caused by files that could hit numbers like 320Kbps bitrate and the maximum the player was perhaps made for was 256Kbps. I may be mistaken about that, but, unmistakably whatever the cause was, it had troubles with some VBR. Either way, my current modern MP3 player has no such troubles.
So, I give it two stars. It is functional, and will still work today -- and it's actually small enough to fit within a large pocket, so even still has some convenience factor compared to a full-sized mp3 cd player. Unfortunately, it lacks a lot of modern features and the main advantages -- the large amount of storage for such a small size at its price range -- no longer apply today with flash based players hitting 4+GB of storage and micro/mini harddrive players in the area of 4-80GB and costing less for the same amount of storage.
Still a great value and practical mp3 player.......2006-06-01
I managed to get one of these refurbished off Amazon, so hopefully the defective-LCD screen issue has ben resolved on this unit. It gets great battery life, plays mini CD-RWs flawlessly (even multi-session discs). I use Memorex brand "Pocket" CD-RWs. The 2 minutes of skip protection is more than enough to prevent interuptions in playing. The player is small enough to fit into most pockets, probably not tight jeans, though. The included headphones are decent. The on- screen-menu is a bit tricky to learn, but once you get used to it, it's pretty easy and quick to naviagte folders and songs. The only qualm I have is the lack of a backlight for the screen.
It's time is over.......2005-09-30
I've had one of these for a little under two years and when I had it I rarely used it. It holds so little music per mini-CD that I just kept burning the much cheaper full sized CDs. Now, I have a flash based player.
If you're really considering this. Don't. Look at one of the cheaper flash players. The mini-CDs only hold 212 (if I remember correctly) and you can get a Sandisk DAP 256 for around $50 now (Sept 05).
However, for a collector of odd gadgets and obsolete tech, sure, this is an interesting anomoly.
LCD problems make this a bad buy........2005-09-01
The lcd which is a very vital element in knowing what is being played for MP3 cds stopped working after a month. I was very disappointed as this was a gift for my dad.
The battery compartment lid is very tight and I think that is one of the reasons the lcd stopped working as some connection may have gotten loose inside because of the pressure needed to open the battery compartment.
The sound quality of the headphones is not good. Used a sony headphone instead and the sound was great. So no complaints about the sound quality here. If the LCD worked, this player would have been a good buy.
I bought a Philips Expanium 431 instead. Not only is it smaller than this player and the lcd works great too.

Product Description
The CanoScan N676U scanner is a truly remarkable addition to your home or workplace. Its intelligent, state-of-the-art features save you time, and the unbelievable price can save you money. Its sleek styling and handsome, high-tech metallic finish look great on any desktop. And the results you'll achieve are simply spectacular. At just over one inch high, the N676U scanner is one of the smallest flatbed scanners in the world. It's also one of the easiest to set up and use. Connect with just a single USB cable to any compatible Mac or PC - no power cord or bulky transformers are necessary. Then scan, copy or e-mail your images in just one step using the three convenient external buttons. You can even burn complete photos onto CDs with ease. So it's easier than ever to take advantage of this scanner's full capabilities: remarkable 48-bit and 600 x 1200 dpi resolution that gives you over 281-trillion possible colors for richer, more robust scans. The accompanying stand allows you to stand up the N670U scanner to make room on your desk, and still use it to scan at anytime.Canon's advanced Z-Lid Expansion Top will forever change the way you scan bulky items, such as books and magazines. Other scanner covers lift only at an angle and become uneven and awkward when scanning anything that isn't completely flat. The N676U scanner cover includes a special expansion hinge that lifts vertically and lays flat to create the space needed for bulky items, and to help ensure clear scans.
Amazon.com Product Description
Featuring a unique Z-lid design, the CanoScan N676U combines a slim 1.4-inch depth with the capability to easily scan images from bulky originals such as books and magazines. No matter what thickness the original, the 600 x 1,200 dpi resolution and 48-bit color provide crisp detail and richness to all scans, with a maximum size of 8.5 by 11.7 inches.
The one-touch design allows home users to print, copy, or send scanned images via e-mail, while the single power cord keeps your desktop free of clutter. Canon provides a one-year warranty that covers parts and labor.
Customer Reviews:
Great inexpensive scanner.......2002-09-05
Had to dump my 4 year old Umax when I was unable to get the latest drivers for Windows XP. I had my doubt's as to what you get in this [less expensive]scanner, but I can tell you I was not disappointed! Was up and running in a matter of minutes and I really like having just the one USB cable to deal with. Unit scans at good rate of speed and the quality of the scans is fine for most applications. Overall, I am very pleased with this scanner and would not hesitate to reccommend it to anyone.
Excellent Value.......2002-08-28
I purchased an N676U for a budget system I built for a family friend. I had the system set up within 10 minutes. Truly easy to setup and easy to use, especially with Windows XP.
The N676U comes with all the hardware and software needed to get up and running, including a USB cable and all the software you need. Even computer beginners should be able to set this up. One BIG plus is that the scanner is actually powered by the USB cable! This is genius in my book (no seperate power cord/ugly power brick required)! I mean, who doesn't already have a mess of cables hidden behind their computers? Like I said, truly plug and play. Plug the USB cable in, install the necessary software, and you should be ready to go.
The scan resolution is relatively low (compared to entry-pro scanners), but then again, this system is not designed for professional graphic designers, it's for casual users who just want to scan pictures quickly and easily. Overall, a great piece of hardware that I would recommend to anyone looking for a quick scan on a budget.
A very good scanner - can not beat for the money.......2002-06-21
Very good scanner. Can not beat for the money. True Plug and play (Not like some stuff I have bought that says plug and play and hours later your still in the plug stage)lol. Very slim and not obtrusive. Slick design. Nice quality. Thumbs up.
IT BROKE 1 YEAR. STINKS. WILL NOT WORK. I USED IT VERY LITTLE TO SCAN. BUMMER. BUY AT OWN RISK.
Just What I Needed.......2002-04-10
I have had this scanner for about four months now and use it nearly every day with great satisfaction. It is easy to use and gives great results. I love the size of it too as it fits well into a small space.
Windows XP compatible: ).......2002-04-05
I was a little skeptic when I ordered it, not sure whether it is compatible with Windows XP. To my surprise, it did include a driver CD for Windows XP. Unfortunately, it seesm to be the basic driver, I still need to download the newest TWAIN drivers from their website.
Once setup, this scanner is pretty easy to use and the scan quality is pretty good. The software package that came with it is just so so, but adaquet. Once you installed the TWAIN driver, you can just use your own softwares like Photoshop for more advanced graphics editing.
The whole unit is very thin, looks pretty nice from the outside. The connection between the lid and the flatbed is weak, so probably need to be careful with it. And it makes strange sound when you turn on the computer.

Targus DMC111 Digital Memory Card Case - Black (Koskin)
ASIN: B00005RFC2 |
Customer Reviews:
absolutely necessary.......2002-07-13
I recently received a Fuji Finepix F601 as a gift; the giver, a professional photographer, included this 128MB Smart Media Card as a matter of course. Thank goodness he knew what he was doing -- the 601 only comes with a 16MB card, which on the 601 is only enough for 5 images at the highest recording level. If you're getting a compatible fuji camera, you really need this.
I have no complaints about card quality, and because the camera interfaces directly (USB) with the PC, there won't be a need to remove the card. Ever. That security, and the ability to store over a hundred 8x10 print-quality pix on one wafer-thin card, makes this product easily worth the extra cost if you're getting a fuji digital camera.

Product Description
SmartMedia is a new powerful storage card, which helps electronic devices - including the digital still camera and various forms of portable information equipment - become even smaller in size. Compared with conventional memory cards, which use a semiconductor memory assembled on board, SmartMedia has an extremely simple structure. Each SmartMedia card features an embedded NAND-type flash memory chip, and thus it is less costly than other types of memory card. As a result, SmartMedia permits the user to have many cards to store a large library of favorite images and sounds. SmartMedia card can be used in portable devices that require internal file data storage and in equipment that processes such data, including digital cameras, PDA, electronic musical instruments, voice recorders, faxes, printers, scanners, word processors and handy terminals.

Product Description
Unlike conventional videotape, you will not accidentally take double images or erase important data with the D'zign DV-5. Of course you can immediately playback data from the position you wish to see. There is no need for troublesome operations such as fast-forward or rewind. In addition, the large capacity hard disk drive allows for long recording times, unlike flash memory recording media. The D'zign DV-5 can store a maximum of 3 hours and 14 minutes of video recording, 10, 699 still images, and 68 hours of voice recording. Digital cameras with hard disk drives are becoming the standard by which all other digital cameras are judged.
Customer Reviews:
Great Idea - Hope for firmware update.......2006-02-16
For what I paid for this unit ($179), I shouldn't be disappointed. There are a bunch of great features on this camera; I love the 2gb hard drive, the handy size, the belt-loop case, the built in MP3 player, the usb charger (yes, the battery charges just by plugging it in to your computer or laptop). What I am not satisfied with is the picture and video quality. Outdoor day-time pictures work pretty well when the lighting is good. You can take a ton of high quality pictures (about 2000 in the 2048x1536 mode). Unfortunately this camera is about worthless in normal indoor lighting. The color is distorted and washed, and there is about a 30% chance to get a focused picture. The flash is at an awkward place (I keep putting my finger over it when I grip the camera), which doesn't matter, because the flash doesn't help the indoor picture problems anyway. I'm hoping that the NHJ comes out with a firmware upgrade which fixes the low light issues. I'm confident the camera is mechanically capable of taking good pictures indoors, because every once in a while I can get a decent photo.
Pretty neat toy for the price.......2005-12-28
I've gotten this little gadget a few weeks ago and I am pretty happy with it. The still image quality is decent, but the lack of a real flash makes inside images tricky. The video looks good too, but has issues with low light conditions. The build in LED lamp is not very useful and has a bit of a blue tint. Run time is 100 to 120 minutes and unit charges pretty quick (2 hrs, either via USB or the power supply). Overall more then happy with it :)
You get what you pay for.......2005-11-30
I disagree with the previous reviewer who panned this item (and also didn't seem to find the 640x480 resolution video mode). For the price it met expectations (and was smaller than I expected). You aren't going to get briliant results with a pocket-sized mpeg4 realtime codec and fixed focus lens. This camera will not replace your DV tape camera - and I don't think that's its intention. It is really compact and lightweight and fits easily in a pocket, and that is its real strength.
Rather than comparing this to tape-based cameras (or even the much larger and more expensive Panasonic HD-based cameras), this camera should be compared to products like the Aiptek range of CF-based cameras. And, having owned an Aiptek previously, I must say that this is much better. The video results are way better than the Aiptek cameras (which use CMOS sensors rather than the more expensive CCD that this camera has). I found the still photo results mixed - when I took photos indoors under strip lighting I needed a very steady hand to prevent blurring, but photos taken outdoors came out well.
All in all, I think that this camera fits well in a niche between the totally crap CMOS cameras, and tape-based video cameras. It won't replace the latter, or your still camera, but if you want a video camera that you can just keep in a pocket or handbag and have accessible all the time, this is about the best one available right now.
You can see a short video and still photo I took with this camera
here
It works but I'm very disappointed.......2005-11-20
Update****
Here is a video I shot on Christmas Eve 2005 at me mums.
http://www.robdrew.com/ce2005.wmv
**If you are going to by this device, make sure you buy a spare battery and keep it fully charged. The unit will not stay powered up by the usb port while working with it to transfer files to or from. My recommendation is that you give it a full charge after shooting video for more than 2 hrs. Then with your fully charged spare, transfer your audio or video files to your HD. Depending on how many files you have on the unit, transfer times could take up to 20mins via its usb 2.0 port.
__________________________________________________________________
I spent a lot of time searching for an actual user review on this product but had no luck. So I volunteered to be the sacricial lamb. I bought this unit as a secondary throw it in my pocket cam. Folks, do yourselves a favor and forget about buying this camera. The video resolution is very poor, the LED flash is a joke and the pics come out blurry 95% of the time. I had really high hopes for this cam but I knew it was too good to be true. The company does a good job of marketing the unit. The presentation on their website makes it seem like the best thing since sliced bread, but it's all just hype. Let me put it this way. Most digital cameras with a movie mode take better video than this unit, which was really designed to be a dedicated DV recorder. It does have an MP3 player and voice recorder and they work ok, but that's not why I bought it. I paid $149 for the unit and would love to return it but the fact is the unit works, just not very well. Checkout my site for actual video and pics taken with this cam. http://www.robdrew.com/gadgets/dv5.html
