Product Description

At its core is a powerful 4.0 megapixel, 1/1.8-type CCD. And to maximize CCD performance, the DiMAGE S404 features two of Minolta's finest technologies: a superior quality GT Lens and CxProcess image processing with 12-bit A/D conversion. The result? A new level of 4.0 megapixel image quality is yours.Konica Minolta drew on its renowned optical expertise and the same GT Lens technology used for the top-of-the-line DiMAGE 7 to develop this sophisticated lens for digital imaging. Although compact, it boasts optical precision powerful enough to match the ultra-high-resolution CCD. And by reducing distortion and color aberration, the lens offers sharp, detailed images at all focal lengths. Even at telephoto range, you can get images with bright aperture value. The high-resolution CCD gives you the level of detail needed for truly impressive print quality - up to approx. 38.5 x 28.9 cm (15.2 x 11.4 inches) using an inkjet printer at 150dpi. As for color reproduction, the CCD has an RGB primary color filter to ensure natural-looking hues on each shot. Each of the red, green and blue color signals is converted by 12-bit A/D processing and provides 4, 096 color gradations. Compared to pictures from conventional 10-bit models, you'll see much greater detail - with a total of over 68 billion gradations.A unique Konica Minolta technology, the CxProcess controls important image factors such as sharpness, gradation and noise reduction for clear, vivid, natural-looking image reproduction.

Amazon.com Product Description

How do you make a good camera even better? With more pixels and more power. Think of Minolta's DiMAGE S404 as a "souped up" S304--there's a new 4-megapixel sensor, plus a faster processor for improved performance, but otherwise, it's virtually the same as their nicely designed 3-megapixel point-and-shoot.

An all-glass 7.15-28mm lens (35-140mm in 35mm equivalents) with 4x optical zoom offers more power than the 3x lenses found in most digital cameras. An anomalous dispersion element and twin double-sided aspheric elements work together to minimize chromatic aberrations and reduce curvilinear distortion, giving you crisp, accurate, edge-to-edge imaging. In addition to the optical zoom, the camera includes an additional 2.2x digital zoom. This feature merely crops the edges off your picture and blows up the remaining image, enlarging your picture at the expense of image quality. Most photo-editing software will let you do the same thing to your picture once you've transferred it to your home computer, so it's a camera feature that's not often used. To compose images, watch the 1.8-inch, 122,000-pixel color LCD monitor, or use the optical viewfinder for traditional image composition.

For professional results with the point-and-shoot operation of the S404, you can choose from five preset modes: macro, portrait, landscape, night portrait, and text. For more creative shooting, use a wide variety of adjustable features, including manual focus, selectable ISO, custom white-balance controls, exposure compensation and bracketing, and a digital-effects control that allows adjustment of color saturation, contrast, and sharpening. There's also a histogram function, a feature still found primarily on high-end digital cameras. A histogram is a graph displayed on the screen indicating the relative proportions of different levels of brightness in a shot you've taken, instantly letting you know if you've captured your shot with the correct exposure. A movable focus point allows for off-center compositions. Multisegment metering technology helps to provide accurate exposures. Four resolution modes cover the range from film-quality photographs to images for e-mail. Movie mode allows 60 seconds of live action and a voice-memo feature helps identify your work.

Four AA batteries power the camera (an optional AC adapter is also available if you're planning to do lots of studio photography). The benefit to using standard AA batteries instead of a custom proprietary battery is that AA batteries are widely available, so missing a once-in-a-lifetime shot due to dead batteries won't be an issue. The downside is that a digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display. If you're an occasional photographer, you can get by with high-power disposables, but if you plan to take more than a handful of photos a month, a set of rechargeable batteries (scroll up to the Accessories section) is a virtual necessity.

For improved performance, the S404 has a 32 MB internal buffer for temporary storage of images. This improves shot-to-shot speeds and performance in continuous shooting mode.

The DiMAGE S404 comes complete with 16 MB CompactFlash card, A/V cable, USB cable, Minolta Image Viewer Utility CD-ROM, four AA alkaline batteries, lens cap, and neck strap.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent value.......2007-02-23

I love this camera. Pure and simple. It has been super reliable and has produced stunning landscape and sunset photographs for me. Some of my favorite photographs have been taken with this camera. You can point this lens straight into the sun with no flare and it produces vivid color and good detail. More than I can say for my $900 dollar Nikon lens, (already in for repair after only 6 months of use). It has never broken down, or let me down. The only changes I would hope for is more than 4mp to produce larger than 8x10 prints, and a larger standard f4 to f22 aperture range. Otherwise, this little "point and shoot" is a wonderful and reliable photographic tool. I was really dissapointed to hear the Minolta company going out of business.

5 out of 5 stars Intermediate Great Camera.......2005-01-16

This camera takes a impressive picture out of the box, in default modes. Taking it to the next step in full manual modes allows for unlimited adjustments.
This is a great camera for the semi-beginner in the digital camera world. Even if you've had a digital camera for a while now, this is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars Good Good and Better.......2004-07-03

First off I am not a camera expert, go to www.steves-digicams.com, www.dcresource.com or www.dpreview.com if you really need all the techie details.

I love it. Its point and shoot (for novices like me). USB image transfer is straightfoward. It uses regular AA batteries (no proprietary stuff). Images are very good (as long as I take the picture at the right time, as I said I am not such a great photographer... beautiful picutres of people with their eyes closed or looking away...

In any case... its snappy (no real awful delays) its not too expensive, its easy to use, does mini-movies w/sound and just works. Not too small, has a nice grip. Doesn't weigh too much (I caried it around Renisiance Festival all day no trouble). I know it has a lot more features but I don't use them (I will tweak digitally on the computer a bit but not on the camera). Preview is a great but that is true of all good digicams. Resolution is great, color is great, and in general contrast is very good (a bit dark but I keep messing with the flash settings and I can fix it on the PC), when I leave it alone it seems to be much better).

The zoom is easy to use but it can REALLY zoom (both optical and digital) so be careful. The multi-shot is great, the flash seem good and seems to reduce red-eye.

Things to think about:
1. Get a large CFRam card (I have a 128) and get a few hundred shots.
2. My CFRAM card is a little slow (check the speed when you buy).
3. Get good rechargable AA batteries (2 or 3 sets). Spend a few more bucks on good ones, you won't regret it (and make sure to get a car charger for trips).
4. In "automatic" mode make sure you focus on what you want your picture focused on (its very easy but I miss the target once in a while and focus is out).
5. Watch the zoom (optical is great) but you can't see for sure through viewfinder with digital zoom (of course) so keep it in mind you need to look at LCD display when digital zooming.
6. You might want a stand (tripod) for family pictures and such.

Overall 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Great All Around Camera!.......2004-06-25

I'd previously purchased a lower-end digital camera/MP3 player, and although I was happy with it, I wanted something that was going to take good pictures that I could make prints with. After a little research I ran across this camera and liked all of the features I was seeing. I bought it and have been using it for almost two years now.

The 4 MPs and optical zoom were both very important in my decision. The quality is absolutely great. You can use it right out of the box as a point and shoot with the automatic setting and most of the picture come out excellent. The best thing though is that the camera also allows the a wide range of manual settings. As I learned more and more about photography the camera grew with me and allowed me to tweak my pictures more and more. For me, that's where the camera is the strongest: It can take quick and easy automatic shots when you want them, but it is very flexible and customizable when you are trying to take more professional or tricky shots.

The battery life is decent. I use two sets of rechargable batteries, and if I bring both sets, I've never needed more. And I take a lot of pictures on an outting. If you use the highest quality setting, the save time can get a bit long, as it creates large 5 or more megabyte .tiff files, but if you're worried about that, you can step down a quality setting to jpegs, which are still excellent quality.

All in all, this camera has grown up with me, and has served for everything I need, from quick shots at group functionings to closeup shots for professional nature websites I've worked on. I would highly recommend it to anyone.

4 out of 5 stars Good camera but very quirky.......2004-01-08

I've had this camera for about three months now. I've taken some great shots with it, and I'm impressed with how sharp the photos can be, especially if I use a tripod to hold it steady. But it is much more complicated to use than the old Kodal DC215 Zoom that I had before. I agree with all its good points mentioned by previous reviewers.

Now for some complaints. It eats alkaline batteries like there's no tomorrow. The cheap, factory-provided alkalines that came with the camera checked good on my multimeter, but the camera repeatedly shut down and gave a low-power indication on the LCD screen as soon as I powered it up. At first I thought the camera was defective, but then I then tried the most powerful NiMH AA batteries I could find (Power 2500 mAH). The camera liked them and has behaved itself ever since. And the extra power allows me to shoot dozens of photos (using the High Quality setting) before the batteries are exhausted.

But you can't just punch the shutter button and expect to take a sharp photo. You have to press the shutter button halfway, let the camera do its autofocusing first, and then press the shutter button the rest of the way or else the picture turns out noticably blurry - so much for those Kodak-moment type shots. And you can't use the zoom feature if you're in movie mode, so whatever focal length you started your 30-second movie clip in is what you stay with for the whole clip.

And the most irritating of all, you have to make sure that the camera has finished saving the previous photo to memory before you try taking another photo or the whole operating system basically freezes and ignores whatever setting you put the mode switch in. At times I have had to physically open the battery compartment in order to get the camera to cycle power because it ignored the fact that I had set the power/mode knob to the OFF position. Using a CF card with a very fast write speed (like 40X) should minimize this problem - just don't expect to be able to take a rapid series of photos with this camera.

And speaking of the power/mode knob, yes, it is EXTREMELY easy to bump it from Power Off to Auto without ever knowing it. It's situated right on the edge of the camera, and it rotates extremely easily. There's no real detent positions that the mode switch 'locks' into, so you can't casually slip the camera into a pocket without accidentally rotating the knob. I've actually had this camera power itself on while I was walking with the camera hanging by its shoulder strap. Several times my girlfriend has accidentally rotated the mode switch a little too far and put it into manual-focus mode without meaning to, so sometimes her photos turn out useless, and she's also accidentally powered it on simply by putting it in her luggage, so you can't pack it inside a suitcase. Fortunately the camera can be set to automatically power down after a preset period of non-use. I chose to have the Power-On sound play whenever it powers up so that I know instantly when it happens, because it happens so often. A better design, such as having solid detents for the knob to 'lock' into for eahc mode selection would help tremendously. EXTREMELY poor design.

And finally, macro shots are a joke. You have to use the LCD screen for macro shots, but it's too small to be useful for determining when your subject is in sharp focus or not. The best that the user manual says is a minimum limit of 16 cm from your subject for macro, but that depends on how precisely how much zoom you're using, and it's hard to judge without a ruler, and often that's not close enough for really close-up shots.

4 out of 5 stars There is a learning curve........2007-01-19

You can get a lot out of this camera, but it is not a point and shoot. If you love photography for the process of obtaining beautiful results, then this is the camera for you. Take the time to learn about the features and abilities of the camera and it will produce wonderful results.

With this camera the first thing to know is you MUST pre-focus EVERY shot, if you just depress the button it will hunt for the focus for awhile and most likely get it wrong. A half press of the button will give you a fairly fast focus, tell you where it is focusing, you then have the option to take the picture (which it takes very fast) or release and re-frame to obtain the proper focus. It sounds like a pain, but it all happens quick enough, with a little practice, you will astound your friends with your abilities and your camera.

The biggest complaint I hear about this camera is -indoor pictures have a yellow cast- to this I say, in this day and age, it is time you learned about white balance. This camera has manual white balance, select manual white balance, point the camera at a wall in your house, press the shutter release, now your in door pictures look fantastic. Simple, no?

If you get a good deal on this camera, get it and learn how to use a camera, not just snap mediocre pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Just an okay camera.......2003-08-31

This camera is very stylish looking but the quality of the photos are mediocre at best. Even using 400 or 800 speed film doesn't help. It takes great close-up shots, but when you get far away....no good. Subjects are hazy and blurry...but like I said close-ups are great.

5 out of 5 stars Very cool.......2003-06-22

This camera has everything that you are looking for! I got it in March, and I still havent' had to change the batteries-very good! Also, it's nice and small so it will fit almost anywhere. The shape is cool too!! The cord is VERY nice, so you can put it around your neck when you don't want to hold onto it anymore. You should definately buy this camera.

        ASIN: B00005UFCL

        Product Description

DVG-9000N is a state-of-the-art DVD/CD-DA player. It combines a stylish design and a high functionality with the comfort you need. DVG-9000N plays back DVD/VCD/SVCD/CD/MP3/CD-R/CD-RW and features 5.1-channel DTS, Dolby Digital decoding, optical & coaxial digital audio outputs, component video outputs, standard AV and S-Video signal outputs, and more.

        Amazon.com Product Description

Daewoo's DVG-9000N offers convenient features like a karaoke microphone input, VGA monitor output (for computer-screen viewing), and PAL-NTSC switching (compatible with U.S. and non-region-encoded U.K. DVDs) alongside progressive-scan video for use with the latest HD-ready TVs.

        Video features
Topping the DVG-9000N's abilities is progressive-scan playback, in which the unit scans one complete frame at a time (instead of rendering alternating sets of odd and even lines), giving you pristine, flicker-free images on a high-definition or HD-ready television.

        Audio features
If your receiver does not process Dolby Digital or DTS but nevertheless sports multichannel analog inputs, you're in luck: the DVG-9000N decodes both 5.1-channel surround-sound formats, so you can still enjoy immersive movie and music mixes. You'll need six analog connections between the player and your receiver, for left, center, right, left and right surround, and the ".1" dedicated subwoofer signal.

        Connections
You can forgo analog connections altogether, as the player offers a choice of either optical or coaxial digital-audio outputs, since some surround receivers offer only one or the other (if you have a choice, we recommend the coaxial connection, which will give you slightly better sound).

The DVG-9000N's back panel also offers six-channel analog outputs (use only the ones marked "left" and "right" for analog stereo connections), and four video outputs: standard S-video and composite-video outputs and the three-pronged progressive-scan video and VGA outputs mentioned above for full compatibility with all current televisions.

        Other features
The DVG-9000N is karaoke-ready with a front-panel .25-inch microphone input--just plug in and sing along with your favorite CDs or special karaoke CDs and DVDs. The unit is compatible with DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, and MP3-CD-R/CD-RW.

        Customer Reviews:

        1 out of 5 stars Daewoo - DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !! - I rate << ZERO >>.......2004-09-17

Even though I bought a DVG-9000N year or so ago I am so disgusted with Daewoo that I am writing this today. I was lured in by the long list of features and rolled the dice. I lost. The unit DIED within a few months. By that time it was out of warranty - a VERY SHORT warranty period - three months or so, I don't recall. I called customer service and after some attitude on the part the rep they were willing to look at the unit for $50.00, plus shipping, plus repair - how nice of them. I decided to not waste any more money with Daewoo so I tossed it out with other household GARBAGE. I will NEVER buy any of their products again. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT !! If it were an option would would rate <<ZERO>> !!!

1 out of 5 stars CD tray does not open.......2003-08-27

I bought this about a year ago, it worked well though I sparingly used it. I created a SVCD with my PC and tried playing it with this player, it got stuck and never ejected out. It does not respond to any command now. I do NOT recommend this product, the design and testing of this product is shoddy.

        1 out of 5 stars Broken Down.......2003-06-05

This player seemed like a fine player for the first 8 months. Then it started hesitating to play disks and eventually quit altogther. I opened the case to discover that it was not spinning the disk. I hoped it was just a motor but the problem seems to originate from the circuit board. If you've already bought this player then hopefully it serves you well. If not then consider paying a little extra for a more reliable brand such as JVC, or SHARP which are the two most reliable names in electronics.

1 out of 5 stars failed after 10 months and poor warranty and support.......2003-01-20

I bought this after hearing the wonderful
review about this unit. It failed after
10 months. When I called Deawoo technical support,
she asked me to power-off the unit and turn -ON
after 1/2 hour. I did that, but no luck.
However, after couple of days, it started to work,
but it failed again. I am an electronics engineer, so to me,
it appears that they do not have a reliable product.

In addition, they do not have a good customer/technical support.
They took my name and phone no. and promised me to call
me back and I have not heard from them. It was two
months ago, now my warranty for parts is also going to expire.

1 out of 5 stars Beware! Not All DVG-9000N's Have VGA Output.......2003-01-15

I am trashing the DVG-9000N for one reason: the Daewoo DVG-9000N is advertised as having a VGA output and some of the DVG-9000N's mysteriously don't have the VGA capability. The Owners Manual for the DVG-9000N on Daewoo's own web site describes the DVG-9000N as having a VGA output and shows an HD-15 plug on the back but the DVG-9000N delivered to me did not have VGA out or the HD-15 plug. Daewoo's reps in New Jersey, though they were courteous and friendly and promptly returned my call, had no expanation for this feature deletion. Daewoo really ought to change model numbers or otherwise specify when it takes away a feature from a product so consumers will know what they are getting.
