My parents bought the Nikon D40 for me as a birthday present. I honestly am so amazed at what I can do just with the kit lens! I've used some other Nikon lenses on it, and I really can't say enough about it!

5 out of 5 stars Best Cameras for the price and package D40 & D40X.......2007-09-22

I had been out looking to find a hobby and decided on photography as a way to get out of the house. Needed a camera and after an intense search, chose the Nikon D40. To get the D40 with two lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm) and for the low cost was great. This outfit allowed me to jump right in and take some great shots. I mounted the D40 on a tripod and take it with me to work and back from work. I have taken some great pictures of sunrises as well as sunsets, etc. I now spend so much time shooting landscape shots in my off-time, that I ended up purchasing another camera (the Nikon D40X). I leave the D40 on the tripod to shoot JPEG shots and carry the D40X to shoot Raw shots that just need to be taken quickly and later corrected using software. I was able to purchase both cameras do what ever I needed because they were both affordable and had all the capabilities I needed to do the shots I wanted to take. With the money I saved of not having to pay for the more expensive systems with the same capabilities as these two systems, I have purchased additional lenses, gear etc. I am extremely happy with these two Nikons and feel Like I am a pro and have the ability to shoot like them with the same results. I might of started out as an amatuer, I now shoot like a PRO. Thank you Nikon.

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2007-09-20

I bought this camera after researching digital SLRs for a couple weeks. I've had in now for a couple months and love it. I bought the 18-200MM lens which is probably a large part of the reason it is such a pleasure to reach for when there's a photo op. That lens is wide enough to capture people in a room and brings in distance objects very nicely. The lens' VR (vibration reduction) feature is VERY nice too. I've hand-held long exposures and seen little blurring. The real purpose of VR is for those far away shots, but it's nice for slow sutter speeds too. The camera itself feels great in the hand and has a nice finger grip so the camera feels secure when walking around. The menus are pretty straight-forward and I enjoyed reading the manual and experimenting for an hour or so as soon as I unboxed it and charged the battery. You can get great pictures right from the start if you set it on auto, but this camera offers much more if you take the time to study the features. The battery lasts a long time (I think I took about 260 shots without recharging). I also bought the 1GB chip (why cut cheap corners?).
To be a perfect camera, it would give me better control of WHERE to focus on automatic, be easier to frame one area and hold the focus and light metering while I move it (I can do this, but it's not intuitive enough for my little brain to remember after a week!), it would have more than 6MP so I could crop out small areas without losing detail.
Great camera! You won't be disappointed. Oh yeah - I also go the ss-400 flash untit that lets you bounce it off the ceiling. It's great!
Get the camera - you'll love it!!

5 out of 5 stars Best dSLR On the Market.......2007-09-16

There are certainly more capable cameras available that provide more adjustments and have bigger sensors, but for $500 this cannot be beat. It exudes quality and has a rather large 2.5" screen. Moreover, it is very small, yet fits my hand quite well (my hands are as big as Johnny Bench, so...). Best of all this camera has motivated me to get out and take pictures because it is so easy to use. It's simple: dust off your wallet and get one of these!

4 out of 5 stars Nikon D 50.......2007-09-09

I love this product and have used it at numerous functions. Pictures are excellent during the day. Flash is average, had to purchase another flash unit for evening and night shots. Do not try to use it if you are trying to take pictures of night football games. You need to change to many of the functions.

Problem!!! Flash unit needed repair. It just did not work after about 6 months. It took 9 weeks for it to be returned to me. I went through the store I purchased it from due to the warranty. Check this out before you send the camera in for any type of repair. Still having problems with the flash!

5 out of 5 stars Making me a professional photographer each day.......2007-09-03

I was quite happy to take pictures from ordinary sony digital cameras, until my camera got lost. Hence bought this Nikon D50 (with 28-80mm lens)with much expectation, but without having any idea of what shutter speed, aperture, manual mode does. Oh man, I was very impressed with just the auto modes for the first 4 months. Great pictures. We all looked so nice. CA scenic beauty was a plus. My friend who also has a DSLR (Canon Rebel) shoot few outdoor pictures with shutter speed open and those all pictures were the best I have seen. He then gave me few hints and I just followed them - the results got better and better. Then I got the DVD about knowing Nikon D50 DSLR camera, which teaches lots about A,S, M, and P modes. Now, I don't care much about the auto functions and these modes really gives wonderful pictures. Our well-known business man saw my pictures online and he wants them for a calender company. Can you beleive? Within 6-7 months, I am contacted for a calender company? I give all credit to Nikon D50. If you learn to know how to use it, then you can make wonderful portraits without straining much. I am thinking of adding filters and lenses in the near future. Each and every trip in CA is wonderful and with Nikon D50 it is really breath taking snaps!
Enjoy Nikon D50 if u have it.

4 out of 5 stars Great entry-level DSLR.......2007-07-19

This is a great camera! I have used it for a 1-1/2 years and I love it. I am a free-lance journalist/artist/photographer and it works for everything except nighttime fires and dark interior shots with no flash. It is a bit slow for shots such as evening deer movement. I have gotten award-winning sunset/sunrise photos with this, as well as wonderful photos of my children both indoors and out. I have also used it for macro photography. For someone who wants an all around camera, this one is perfect -- it is fast, crisp and clear. The colors are wonderful. The kit lenses (18-55 and 55-200) are good. If you want to do serious wildlife photography, you will need to invest in a larger telephoto lens. I routinely enlarge photos I take with this camera to 11x14 with no loss of clarity. Buy a big sd card -- you'll be taking tons of photos!

5 out of 5 stars Great DSLR for the Amateur Hobbyist who use to do film.......2007-06-25

If you use a Nikon autofocus SLR film camera and do not want to spend the "big bucks" on a DSLR that will accept your present lenses then this is the camera for you. Regretably Nikon is no longer manufacturing this camera and has replaced the D50 with the D40. Although the D40 will accept certain older autofocus lenses (G and D type), it will not autofocus them. The D50 will autofocus them. All of the D50s will eventually be all second-hand or refurbished, but I would not let that stop me from buying one (for mine is refurbished).

The beauty of this camera is that it operates almost exactly like my Nikon N65. The learning curve is very small. And even though it is only 6.1 megapixels (while so many are moving to the 10MP route) the standard prints I get are sharp and crisp. As one camera salesman and expert told me, it is not always the megapixels that make a good picture, it is also the lense. And again, I found the 18-55mm lense that came with it to live up to the Nikkor lense reputation. The other beauty of this camera is that you can correct your mistakes right away, with the instant preview on the LCD. Film cameras do not have that luxury. But the disadvantage is that the picture angle is not equal to a film camera. I can get a wider angle of view with my N65, so I will continue to shoot film under certain circumstances. But other than that the D50 is a great camera!

5 out of 5 stars Im amazed of this camera.......2007-06-22

This is my first SLR camera and I can't get over what great professional pictures this cameras does
I read before lots and lots of reviews before buying a camera and I saw everybody gave really good reviews in this camera so I decided to get this one instead of the canon
And I did not get wrong! my brother haves the canon xti and this camera takes so much nicer pictures then is camera so am very happy with my buy also it cost me so cheap I'm even happier !

This is my first SLR camera and I can't get over what great professional pictures this cameras does

And I did not get wrong! my brother haves the canon xti and this camera takes so much nicer pictures then is camera so am very happy with my buy also it cost me so cheap I'm even happier !

Amazon.com Product Description

Note: This item has been inspected and refurbished by a trusted reseller or the original manufacturer.

Nikon's D50 interchangeable-lens digital SLR camera is designed to make it easier than ever to enjoy the thrill of outstanding digital SLR picture quality easily and instantly. Combining the outstanding response of Nikon's patented digital and photographic performance with optical performance available only from renowned Nikkor interchangeable lenses and expanded shooting options only available in a quality digital SLR camera, the Nikon D50 makes exceptional digital SLR photography a reality for everyone.

The next evolution of Nikon's scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes simplifies picture taking, freeing the photographer to concentrate on capturing the evanescence of special moments. Selecting one of the seven easily distinguishable icons from the handy exposure mode dial optimizes otherwise complex settings and ISO-equivalent sensitivity to produce consistently remarkable results. Newly added is Child mode, which makes it easier to take memorable pictures of the little ones complete with ideal vivid color and contrast--ready to print beautifully without the fuss of later adjustments at the computer. Full manual exposure control is also available, allowing more advanced photographers all the creative freedom they desire while also making it possible for all photographers to expand their enjoyment of photography.

The D50 features a new 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and a highly advanced image processing engine that team together to create truly faithful image files that are capable of significant enlargement while remaining manageable in overall file size, making it easier to take and store more great pictures. These optimized components produce more consistent results, even under shooting conditions that challenge other digital cameras, such as when working with light-colored subjects or long exposure shots.

Distinguishing itself over lesser systems, the Nikon D50 is always ready to shoot when that special moment or expression presents itself. When the power is turned on, the camera is ready to shoot in just 0.2 seconds for near-instant readiness. The shutter's release lag time is also minimized for near-instant response that virtually eliminates a common frustration of digital photography.

The Nikon D50's continuous shooting
The D50 is capable of continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second for bursts of up to 137 pictures.
Continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second can be maintained for bursts of up to 137 pictures, making action photography a reality. Pictures taken are instantly processed and recorded to the photographer's compact SD (Secure Digital) memory card. A new USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface supports faster transfer of images when connected to a compatible computer.

Shutter speed choices extend from 30 seconds to an action-stopping 1/4,000 second. A high-speed flash sync speed up to 1/500 second makes great fill flash photography possible, and Nikon technology makes it automatic. A bulb setting is also included for long exposures. The shutter is designed to ensure fast curtain action for consistent operation and accurate, predictable results, even at high shutter speed settings. Auto ISO maximizes available light by automatically setting ISO-equivalent sensitivity across the available range of 200 to 1600. D50 photographers can also opt to set the ISO sensitivity manually for personal control.

The D50's 5-area autofocus system inherits Nikon's proven cross-type center sensor, broad frame coverage, and class-leading low-light detection found only in the award-winning Nikon D70 camera, and it delivers even greater AF precision with fast, more consistent subject acquisition and improved focus tracking. The new system adopts AF-A mode for smooth automated operation that switches between AF-S (single-servo autofocus) and AF-C (continuous-servo autofocus) depending on the movement of the subject in the framed shot. An AF-assist illuminator is also included, which helps maximize performance when shooting in low lighting conditions.

The D50 produces consistently natural coloration by measuring the entire frame of the shot and matching white balance to the light source. Advanced auto white balance handles most lighting situations, but the flexible options include a choice of six specific manual settings, white balance bracketing for added creative choice of results, as well as a preset option for using a gray or white object as a calibrating reference under mixed lighting conditions.

Nikon's new 3D Color Matrix Metering II ensures accurate exposure control in most types of lighting situations by automatically comparing input from its frame-wide 420-pixel sensor for each scene to a large onboard database of over 30,000 scenes from actual photography. Professionals and amateurs alike rely on Nikon's exclusive light metering technologies that produce ideal exposures instantly. Newly developed exposure evaluation methods detect highlights and shadows in the frame and compensate for them to help minimize under- or over-exposure by comparing the lighting pattern of the frame with the onboard database of scenes, thus enhancing performance for more accurate and consistent exposures.

The Nikon D50's large display
The D50's 2.0-inch LCD display is larger than the 1.8-inch screens found in cameras such as the Canon Digital Rebel XT.
The D50 is an outstanding performer, right down to its diverse playback options, versatile custom settings, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interface for easy connectivity or direct printing to any PictBridge compatible printer with in-camera page setup, and Nikon's complimentary PictureProject software that will extend anyone's photographic experience with easy image transfers, effective image organization and editing, creative page layout design, plus printing and sharing. PictureProject's new version 1.5 provides customers with an exceptional added value topped only by its excellent performance.

The compact, lightweight design of the new D50 makes it easy to carry on any outing, while its body contours and easily accessible controls provide handling efficiency and easy operation. Newly designed on-screen menus present clear and helpful user information in plain language on the D50's large 2.0-inch LCD monitor, and intuitive help dialogs are available for on-the-spot reference to the respective menu selections. The high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery helps extend mobility and convenience by delivering the power to shoot up to 2,000 images on a single charge.

These inherent advantages combine with the empowering and creatively inspiring components of Nikon's Total Imaging System, including high-quality AF and DX Nikkor lenses, Speedlights and Nikon's Creative Lighting System, as well as versatile software options, to deliver a new level of operating ease, expanded creative possibilities, and pure enjoyment. The Nikon D50 presents the perfect opportunity for anyone to start enjoying the advantages of Nikon digital SLR photography today.

18-55mm ED AF-S DX Zoom Nikkor Lens Included

The new D50 offers seamless compatibility with Nikon's extensive family of high-performance AF Nikkor lenses, as well as the expanding family of digital-dedicated DX Nikkor lenses, providing superb color reproduction, razor-sharp image clarity, and fast and accurate autofocus performance.

This D50 camera kit comes with an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor lens. Ideal as a normal lens designed exclusively for Nikon DX format SLRs, the ultra-compact 18-55mm 3x zoom provides superb versatility in a wide variety of shooting situations.

It's equipped with a new compact rod-type Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which enables ultra-high speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. The lens' ED glass elements achieve minimized chromatic aberration and superior optical performance, while their hybrid aspherical elements ensure high resolution and contrast.

The lens also feature a Focus Mode switch that enables quick switching between A (autofocus) and M (manual focus), plus a seven-blade round diaphragm for more natural out-of-focus highlights. 5 out of 5 stars Great Digital SLR.......2006-07-03

The Nikon D50 is everything it's touted to be. The picture quality is great and it is the perfect mix of easy to use, while maintaining manual/professional controls. The color balance and contrast only occasionally need adjusting. I have been particularly impressed with the nighttime portrait mode, which leaves a lot of the original ambiance of the picture and doesn't overwhelm your subject with a too bright flash. The lens that is included leaves something to be desired, however, and will likely need to be replaced with a faster one fairly soon. Overall, I am very please with this camera and the pictures it has produced thus far.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Nikon D50 is a photographer's digital dream come true. Combining Nikon's advanced SLR technology with the simplicity that many point-and-shoot digital camera uses have come to expect, the D50 offers a wide array of features that will satisfy both the weekend picture taker as well as the serious photographer who is looking for an affordable digital SLR solution.

The D50's connection ports are easily accessible.

"In the cockpit": controls at the ready. View larger.

Easy-to-navigate menu functions.

Rechargeable battery compartment.
For starters, the D50 features a new 6.1 effective megapixel Nikon DX Format CCD image sensor and a highly advanced image processing engine that team together to create truly faithful image files of up to resolutions of 3008 x 2000 pixels. Continuous shooting at 2.5 frames per second can be maintained for bursts of up to 137 pictures, making action photography a reality. Pictures are instantly processed and recorded to the photographer's compact SD memory card (not included). A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 interface supports faster transfer of images when connected to a compatible computer.

With the D50, your shutter speed choices extend from 30 seconds to 1/4,000 second. An automated high-speed flash sync speed up to 1/500 second makes high-quality fill flash photography possible, and you also have the option of manually controlling the bulb setting for long exposures. Auto ISO maximizes available light by automatically setting ISO-equivalent sensitivity across the available range of 200 to 1600, but photographers also have the option to set the ISO sensitivity manually for greater control.

Best of all, the D50 allows you to use any one of Nikon's professional-grade AF and DX Nikkor lenses. The AF Zoom-Nikkor 28-80mm f3.3-5.6G that's included with the D50 features one aspherical lens element with a high-performance Nikon Super Integrated Coating that delivers superior color reproduction while minimizing ghost and flare. A rounded diaphragm opening with seven blades makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural, and the aspherical lens element minimizes distortion, especially at the periphery area, for superior optical performance. Compact and lightweight with a comfortable, well-balanced feel, this wide angle-to-portrait zoom lens is ideal for travel landscapes, scenics, and general family photography.

Approaching Point-and-Shoot Simplicity
For those who want professional-quality images but without having to think about the settings, the D50's scene-optimized Digital Vari-Program modes simplifies the picture-taking process and frees you to concentrate on capturing those special moments. Selecting one of the seven easily distinguishable icons from the handy exposure mode dial optimizes otherwise complex settings and produces consistently remarkable results. The Child Mode, for instance, makes it easier to take memorable pictures of the little ones complete with ideal vivid color and contrast -- ready to print beautifully without the fuss of later adjustments at the computer. Other modes include Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Child, Close Up, Sports, and Night Portrait.

Among the many features that make the Nikon D50 an exceptional digital SLR choice are:

The compact, lightweight design of the D50 makes it easy to carry on any outing, and the camera's on-screen menus present clear and helpful user information in plain language on a large 2.0-inch LCD monitor. The high-capacity rechargeable lithium-ion battery helps extend mobility and convenience by delivering the power to shoot up to 2,000 images on a single charge. In short, the D50 delivers the professional-level quality of an SLR of this class but with many of the convenient automatic features that can make photography so fun.

What's in the Box
Camera body, rechargeable Li-ion battery EN-EL3, quick charger MH-18a, video cable, USB cable UC-E4, strap, body cap, eyepiece cap DK-5, rubber eyecup DK-20, accessory shoe cover, PictureProject CD-ROM; 28-80mm lens: lens, LC-52 snap-on front lens cap, and rear lens cap.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera.......2007-07-03

Bought this camera before we went overseas. Without reading the manuals was able to get great photos and came back with a large amount of Great Shots! Would recommend this camera to anyone getting started in SLR's. I previously had a manual Pentax. This camera between the amount of photos and the ease of use is a Great Camera.

5 out of 5 stars Unless you are a sport journalist, I don't think you can go wrong with this camera.......2007-06-07

The 6 Megapixel Nikon D40 is targeted for those who want a relatively compact and light camera yet having most of the important SLR features. The D40 is priced reasonably (cheaper than D50/D80 and Canon Rebel XTi). In my opinion, if you are still considering whether to get a point and shoot camera or a DSLR, the D40 will be a better choice than any point and shoot camera, by far, even those with 8MP or 10MP. But if you are already deciding to get a DSLR or you want more control of the picture taking experience, then I would recommend you to also test the D50 and/or D80 first before deciding to buy the D40. I want you to make sure that you know what you will get (and not get) with the D40. Don't get me wrong though, the D40 is an awesome camera, and I don't think you will regret buying one. There are some limitation with the D40 which shouldn't bother most people, for example, the D40 doesn't have dedicated button to change picture quality, white balance or ISO settings (which generally only professional/enthusiast will care). Once you understand (and accept) its limitation, the D40 is a potent and exciting photography machine.

Just like all its (DSLR) siblings, the D40 powers on instantly and take pictures with almost no shutter lag which are the major advantages of a DSLR over a point and shoot camera. In addition to the P,S,A,M mode, the picture quality of the auto settings (auto, child mode, landscape etc) are also very good. With 2.5 frames per second you can capture movement progress in sports like football, basketball, baseball etc. Also great to photograph your family or child (child mode). The D40 is a great all around camera.

Some notable new features:
1. Auto (no flash) mode. Without this mode the flash will pop-up (on all other pre-programmed mode) even when you don't want to use flash (which can be annoying). The internal flash will not pop up automatically with the P,S,A,M settings.
2. In camera editing capability such as black and white, sepia and some filter effects etc. While sounds gimmicky, these features are useful especially for those who doesn't have Adobe Photoshop (or other image editing software).

To date, D40 is the smallest and lightest among all the Nikon DSLR (even smaller than the Canon Rebel XT/XTi, however the D40 is more ergonomics). I believe that choosing a camera that fits comfortably with your hands is important. Therefore, I recommend people to test the camera before buying (even if you want to buy online, please do go to a physical store and test the camera first whenever possible).

The D40 has only 3 (horizontal) autofocus point (5 for D50 and 11 for D80). If you know "The Rule of Thirds", the additional AF points above and below the center focus point (available in D50 and D80) are handy to help create the horizontal third line. However, the 3 horizontal AF point in D40 is still helpful to create the vertical third line. Also one can focus with the middle AF point and after the focus is lock then move the frame upwards/downwards to create the horizontal third line. Just make sure the exposure level is still accurate when you move the frame after you lock the focus.

About the 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens: A good lens producing sharp photos (though not a very fast lens). Also decent for close-up/macro photography. Lens uses internal focus technology and focusing operation is silent. A very decent kit lens.

Lens compatibility: Notice that with D40, autofocus function will not work for non AF-S/AF-I lens. If you already have non AF-S/AF-I Nikon lenses and want a backup or replacement camera, you will be better off buying D50, D70s or D80. If you buy the D40, it will be convenient to stick with AF-S and AF-I type lenses. I'm not sure why Nikon choose this route for the D40 (whether to enable smaller size camera or from now on Nikon will only make AF-S lens compatible camera). There are a lot of good Nikon AF-S lenses (price range added: low, medium, high) that are fully compatible with the D40 such as:

- Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED IF AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S DX VR (M)
- Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX (L)
- Nikon 55-200mm f4-5.6G ED AF-S DX VR (L)
- Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (M)
- Nikon 12-24mm f/4G ED IF AF-S DX (M)
- Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S (H)
- Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S DX (H)
- Nikon 28-70mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF-S (H)
- Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR (H)
- Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro (M)
- And several other expensive prime tele/zoom lens like 200-400mm, 300m, 400mm, 500mm, 600mm.

High priced lens ($1000+) are usually pro level lens which usually have better construction, faster (f-stop), and produce better quality picture. However, often times, lower price lens will serve your needs just fine. I think it is important to know what you want to use the camera for before deciding which camera and lens to buy.

Image quality of the D40 is very good which is #1 factor that I look for in a digital camera.

Here are the pros and cons of the D40 in my opinion:

Pros:
1. Nice out of the camera result picture quality
2. Affordable price
3. Compact size and light weight
4. Large and bright 2.5 inch LCD
5. 2.5 frames per second
6. B/W, Sepia, several more in-camera editing features.
7. Instant power on, fast autofocus and no shutter lag
8. Noise is acceptable at high ISO settings. Auto ISO settings available.
9. Great 18-55mm II AF-S kit lens.
10. Great battery life (400+ on a single charge. 1000+ if flash is not used).
11. Auto (flash off) mode available
12. 1/500 flash sync

Cons:
1. No direct button to change QUAL, WB and ISO settings
2. Grip comfortably but might be a bit too small for some people
3. No top LCD and no front command dial
4. Autofocus will not work with non AF-S or non AF-I lenses (such as the 70-300m G and 50mm f/1.8D lens)
5. No AF/MF switch (have to use the switch on the lens)
6. Only 3 autofocus point
7. 6 Megapixel (More Megapixel needed to print larger than 12 X 18 at 300 dpi)
8. No night landscape mode in pre-programmed settings
9. No in camera image stabilization (like Sony and Pentax) but Nikon has lenses with it (VR).
10. No depth-of-field preview button

In conclusion, the D40 is perfect for those who want high quality pictures, more control (than a point and shoot camera), and have a DSLR experience (instant power on and no shutter lag), without having to carry a bulky camera. And unless you are shooting sports/actions professionaly (which faster focusing processor, faster frames per second and larger memory buffer might be needed), the D40 is pretty much all you will need.

Happy Photographing!

5 out of 5 stars Comparing the Nikon D40, D80 and D200.......2007-06-07

As long as you know what you're buying, it's hard to go wrong with Nikon's digital SLRs. They all take beautiful photographs. Even the basic D40 will give you professional-level clarity, color and focus. When I started using a Nikon digital to shoot travel-guide photos at Walt Disney World about five years ago, I would often get stopped by guests wanting to ask about my camera. Now I never do, because so many have one that looks just like it!

There are four Nikon digital SLRs in the consumer market. Here's how they compare:

The entry-level camera is the Nikon D40. It's a basic SLR camera that takes high-quality 6.1 megapixel (MP) photos. It has an automatic flash, eight programmed exposure modes, three focus areas and a self-timer with four settings (2, 5, 10 and 20 seconds). The D40 can shoot about two-and-a-half images per second and take about 450 photos on each battery charge. Its ISO range is 200-1600. On the downside, it has a plastic body, a semi-mechanical shutter and only accepts Nikon's newer AF-I or AF-S lenses unless you want to manually focus each shot. It weighs about a pound.

Besides the D40 set on this page, Amazon also sells three others:
1) The best-selling option is Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera Kit with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens.
2) Here's one with just one lens and a few accessories: Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera + Nikon 18-55mm AF-S Lens + Nikon SLR Gadget Bag + Transcend 2GB 150x SecureDigital Card + USB Card Reader.
3) And one with two lenses and a flash: Nikon D40 6.1MP Digital SLR Camera + Nikon 18-55mm AF-S Lens + Nikon 55-200mm ED AF-S Lens + Nikon SB-400 AF Speedlight Flash + Transcend 2GB 150x SecureDigital Card + USB Card Reader + Nikon SLR Gadget Bag.

One step up from the D40 is the D40x. Using the same body as the D40, it shoots 10.2 MP photos. It can take about three images per second, get about 500 photos out of a single charge, has an ISO range of 100-1600 and has a fully electronic shutter. The most popular D40x set is Nikon D40x 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED II AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens.

A major step up is the D80. About a third-inch wider and four ounces heavier than the D40, it uses the same processor but works fully with any Nikon SLR lens. It has 11 focus areas, a depth-of-field preview in its optical viewfinder, white-balance bracketing and a self-timer that can be set for any time between 2 and 20 seconds. Incredibly, you can get up to 2000 shots on each battery charge, assuming you don't use the LCD screen much. This is the camera used by Disney's PhotoPass photographers. Amazon sells the D80 body separately (Nikon D80 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body only) and in various lens-package deals.

Finally, the D200 is simply one of the best cameras Nikon has ever built. A half-inch taller and a third-inch wider than the D80, it weighs nearly two pounds thanks to its all-metal body. Designed for more advanced users, it does away with all but the standard programmed exposure mode and instead shoots 5 frames per second, outstanding for a 10 MP ISO 100 camera, especially at this price. It uses Compact Flash cards. In many ways the D200 is a professional camera at a consumer price. This is the camera I use for all but my most demanding shots. From a professional standpoint it really increases your productivity compared to the far bulkier D2 models, as it is so much easier to carry and position. Amazon sells the D200 body by itself (Nikon D200 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) and in various package deals.

I'm not including the professional D2 models here, as explaining all their features would drag this review on forever. Besides, from what I've heard the new D3 should be released this fall.

I bought this camera to take digital before and after pictures for my business. I'm very pleased at the quality of the pictures this camera takes. The battery maintains its charge much longer than I anticipated and I like the choice of manual or automatic modes. Just a great camera!

I recieved the camera and all items in the package I ordered all together in what I consider good time. Amazon and "Carmeta Camera" are honest and first rate! I have found that with Amazon, you get what you order, no substitutions!

Stay away from places like "Rainbowtronics, Best Price Cameras and FotoConnections"! After personally dealing with these screwballs, I found them to be very crooked! Be careful! An example: I ordered a digital camera from them only to get an email requesting I call to verify the order with their customer service departments. When I called, they tried to sell me an SD card for 5 times its real cost. When I declined, they then informed me the camera was an import and did not have the original factory warranty. Isn't that switch and bate? An illegal tactic as far as I know. This happened with all three of the above mentioned websites!!

Amazon and Carmeta Camera --First rate!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Loving it!.......2007-03-14

I received the camera and all the goodies listed. Awesome bargain! Everything is new and in perfect working order. I love the little card reader. This is my first digital SLR and I couldn't be happier. It compares well with my old film SLR. Macro (close up) is very clear and clean and I didn't need a tripod to get a clear photo. Nice! Couldn't be happier.

5 out of 5 stars This package is quite the steal!.......2007-08-01

For a few extra dollars, I managed not only to get the SB-400, but the sto-fen omnibounce (which actually helps remedy vertical shots) and a charger with batteries. As for the SB-400, it does everything my SB-600 can do except for swivel left or right, lacks the strength that the SB-600 has, eliminates commander mode on my D80 to initiate any wireless flash capabilities, and recycle time isn't as fast as my SB-600. The advantage of the SB-400 is it is very COMPACT and is definitely a formidable substitute for any built-in flash on Nikon bodies. I would use the SB-400 for small get togethers and personal shoots, but if I needed to the extra firepower and wireless flash capabilities, I'd stick with the SB-600. Great overall package deal, I must say.
