Palm's latest PDA offering delivers wireless networking, lots of RAM and a faster processor--a PDA for the professional.Palm has embraced wireless networking with the Tungsten C, which has built in 802.11b capability. This is definitely a PDA for power users, as along with wireless networking comes 64MB of RAM, 51MB of which is available for your applications and data. The Tungsten C runs on the new Intel PXA 255 processor, an update of the PXA 250 which has more speed and better power management than its predecessor.

Compact and powerful

The hardware looks very much like that of the Tungsten W. There is no antenna like the W has, but there is a keypad where the Graffiti area traditionally sits on a Palm. A new version of Graffiti, called rather unimaginatively Graffiti2, is provided, and you can use this to write text direct to the screen should you desire to.

Palm provides a whole slew of applications including Documents To Go, for working with Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. This is in ROM along with email software VersaMail and software to set up the wireless networking features and run VPN (Virtual Private Networking) sessions. Connecting to an existing 802.11b network is easy as pie -- and a separate manual walks you though the process if required. Once connected, you can use another ROM-based application, Web, to browse the Web using your wireless modem.

Though designed with professional users in mind Palm has not lost sight of the fact that the Tungsten C will appeal to a wider audience. They provide the Kinoma player for watching movies and Photos for looking at digital images. A key notable absence is any kind of MP3 player.

This Machine is Great .......2007-05-28

I'm a mid level manager and my company just gave me the Tungsten C as away to remind myself of upcoming meetings and events. All of the senior level managers are well equipped with blackberry's so there was no doubt in my mind that I was definitely given a hand me down of some sort.

At first it seemed somewhat awkward and I wasn't used to using the thumboard, but in all reality I've become attached to this machine. Unlike the blackberry it's not a phone, and I prefer to have my scheduling device to be different than my phone. I use it primarily as a scheduler for meetings and I love the good strong beep it omits when I set alarms that notify me of upcoming events. While others complain that it seems to shut off, I haven't had any such problems in the slightest, and let me remind you that this machine was given to me already used. The thumbboard is now indispensable for me. I look at other palm devices and shrivel at the idea of having to use the draw style method (or however you call it). I also use the device to take notes in meetings and I can use the 'notes feature' of calendar to literally make a point to mention something in one of the upcoming recurring meetings I set with my staff.

My secondary use is for enjoyment. When I spent two hours waiting for delayed connection in an airport, it was so great to have a device in which I could read ebooks and play solitaire. When wireless is available, the wifi has some problems loading but once it does then it's very clear and the screen is very bright with vivid colors.

This machine has seriously become my companion. I carry it with me everywhere I go and even make my grocery shopping list in it. It seems that all the newer palms are devoid of thumboards of which can only be found in phones. Palm should really make an effort to always include *at least* one device with a thumboard with every non cellular device it manufactures. I've never called palm so I can't vouch for their customer service but one thing I can say is that this company pioneered a virtually new idea in manufacturing pdas, and any individual I have met working in engineering computer electronics always has that dear in the headlights look to them, because they're in effect literally trying to come up with something that's never been done before. But there's no denying that palm just can't fulfill their full potential as a company in the fact that this product alone appears destined to disappear into the land of the obsolete, when in fact they should improve it, emulate it, and put something like it back on the market. There is *still* a market for non cellular devices.

Can't live without it........2007-03-30

I've used the Tungsten C for more than 5 years now and I can't imagine being without it. I love the keypad, I can't use the palm writing style to save ny life, so it's great. Its very easy to use, I never needed the user manual. The wifi works great for me, yes webpages look different and don't always load right, but hey, you're using a 3" screen, if you want perfection use a computer. Others have mentioned problems with the screen going dead, losing pixels, or the battery dying, I've never had any problems with any of these.

As for problems it does have, like others have mentioned there is a high pitched buzz, but its fairly quiet and depending on which way it's facing I often can't even hear it and when I do its never really bothered me that much.

The biggest problem is that as the palm gets older the sensitivity of the screen changes, it doesn't read your taps exactly where you tapped on the screen, consequently you have to use the digitizer more often. But again it's not enough of a problem that I would stop buying Tungsten Cs.

Obviously they don't last forever, but nothing does. Thankfully in my case my mother also had a Tungsten C that she didn't use as much since she got a palm pc phone. Once the screen got to be a hassel I switched with her new one, reset it and gave it the same name as the old one, told hotsync to overwrite everything and synced it. It was exactly like my old one, I didn't have to do anything.

So yes it has problems, but so does every other model. As far as I'm concerned it does the things I need it to do flawlessly, most areas or programs that do have problems are ones I don't even use. For me any other problems it has are far overweighed by the things it does right.

DOES NOT ALLOW 2GB SDCARD!!.......2006-10-05

I have been happily using this robust machine since it originally came out, and I have NEVER had ANY complaints UNTIL NOW.

I tried to upgrade my SDCARD to a 2GB SDCARD and the Tungsten C wouldn't recognize it. Apparently, Palm will NOT release an updated driver that allows their units to read SDCARDS that are above 512MB although the machine certainly has the hardware to be capable to do so (instead they want us to shell out another few hundred dollars to buy a Tungsten TX or a new LifeDrive). The hacks that are out there DO NOT WORK (e.g. downloading LifeDrive's driver, etc.).

Since most of us users are listeners of MP3s and PodCasts, this failure of Palm to release a driver (which can so easily remedy the problem) shows a sincere failure to Palm's customers most of who have been loyal customers for YEARS.

If you thing that you will EVER need a card that has storage space above 512MB, then the Tungsten C is NOT for you. This is a serious disappointment.

The tungsten c is a VERY VERY VERY BAD PEICE OF HARDWARE 1 day after i got it it died the only reason it died was unstable hardware i donwloaded one thing and it just crashed the secend thing is i droped it 3 feet and it had about 400 dead pixils.Please go with a sony clie PEG-NX60 or a NX73v.

i just got this and its awsome! easy to work with i dont even need the manual but some times the buttons get stuck and a phew problems with syncing but other then that a perfect handheld

Iffy.......2007-05-13

This product caught my attention because the new E2 needs 2 gadgets to charge and sync, while this does both in one. However, the connection is iffy (need to jiggle the wire to get it to connect correctly), and it shorted out my computer twice. I hope someone invents one that is dependable.

I love this cable - it allows me to connect any USB device to my PC. Works with my Palm. I bought it for Treo 650 and it works great. A whole lot cheaper than what cellular stores want for these.

where's the button? And a solution.......2007-02-02

When this cable arrived there was no button familiar to Palm users to hotsync; I could not get it to work and was very frustrated. After some conversation with customer service, I did some exploring and discovered that I can initiate a hotsync from the PDA ... go to the main menu, go to hotsync screen and tap the hotsync graphic; it's actually an icon and will then initiate hotsync.
No button needed.

This device does not work properly with OS X 10.4
It is missing the sync button that comes on the OEM
version of this cable, which makes this thing useless.
Atleast, it does work as a USB charger for the treo 650.

Eforcity USB Charger/ Good for indicated models........2007-03-29

I got 3 hand me down PDA's that I use for travel. This USB charger has been confirmed by Eforcity to universally work for PDA's mention but not for Zune or Ipod. For those they recommended either stand alone Ipod charger or their white Ipod version of USB charger. This one worked fine for my Palm Tungsten, Clie, and handspring.

Being a road warrior, things just happen. So having a spare is a must. So you might as well spend the money and get the right one that actually fits and works. I did and it has bailed me out more than once.
