Amazon.com Review

Kicking the technology advances up another notch, the Palm Tungsten T3 delivers a professional, sleek alternative to bulkier Pocket PCs that's chock-full of productivity enhancing and information sharing applications. Improvements over the T2 include a full-screen mode when the bottom casing is slid open, a bevy of enhanced display options, compatibility with Java applets, larger internal memory, and an easier to access status bar.

First, just the technical facts:

The T3's Stretch Display
Overall, the Tungsten T3 isn't that much smaller than the Zire 71, but it does feel nicely compact in the hand and its larger navigation button is easier to manipulate with just your thumb. However, the "wow factor" comes into full force when you slide down the bottom of the T3's case to reveal the full screen mode. And it gets even better. The standard "silkscreened" Graffiti input area (so-called because its icons and borders are printed onto the screen's glass) is now replaced by a digital version, which can be hidden to reveal an even larger screen. We found this useful when writing long notes in Memos and viewing an expanded daily calendar view. You don't actually need the Graffiti writing area to input data into notes or Calendar items. With the Full-Screen Writing preference turned on, you can write Graffiti characters anywhere on the screen (you'll even see an outline traced on the screen as you write). But the crowning display enhancement is the ability to rotate the screen to landscape view, which was especially handy when viewing downloaded movie trailers (using the included Kinoma video player). If you're left-handed, you can change the orientation in landscape view so that the status bar and Graffiti input area are more accessible to your own orientation.

The T3 includes the familiar suite of Palm applications (Calendar, Contacts, Memos, and Tasks) as well as a number of third-party software title (ranging from Acrobat Reader to RealOne Player for listening to digital audio). Calendar has been given an Outlook-friendly makeover, adding an Agenda view that consolidates all of today's appointments, tasks, and new e-mails. With full-screen mode on, Calendar's month view now displays smaller calendars for the previous and next months.

Bluetooth wireless functionality is built in, and the Tungsten T3 still includes the BlueBoard and BlueChat for sharing information with other Tungsten users. For Web communication, Palm includes VersaMail and WebBrowser Pro, both of which can be used along with a Bluetooth phone. Additionally, VersaMail can access a corporate e-mail account, including Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Domino servers.

Java has also now entered the Palm OS arena, expanding the application development opportunities. The T3 comes with a few sample applets (including a periodic table that would be handy at our local pub's trivia night), but we'll have to wait for more development before Java becomes a full Palm OS tool.

Our only complaint, design-wise, is the placement of the Voice Memo button, which as been placed toward the top of the left side of the case, below the on/off button on the top panel. When turning on the device, our left hand's thumb continually triggered the Voice Memo app when attempting to turn on the T3. Note that you can also turn the T3 on by pressing one of the application buttons surrounding the Navigator, or by sliding the bottom case open. Overall, the Tungsten T3 is a Palm powerhouse, blending its traditional information management strength with new multimedia and connectivity functionality (both wired and wireless). It's about as perfect a personal productivity agent for professional settings as it gets. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

4 out of 5 stars Its getting dated.. but sure does the job.......2007-05-14

One of the reason I do not let goi ts voice recording capability.. I can live without the wi-fi, but not without the voice recording.

I see that this recording feature does not come in the recient models and that is a shame.. also, this device can accomodate for a camera add-on which is imposible to find.. so, yes it has its limitations but is more faithful tha Lassie

4 out of 5 stars Awesome PDA!.......2007-04-28

I just love this PDA. It's the only fast model from PAlm to feature voice recorder, which is fundamental for me cause I tape my classes at the uni. The mic is just good enough for that and voice memos.
The palm is fast enough to be able to play crystal-clear mp3s and also movies (if you care to recompress and watch it a tiny screen).
I also bought a GPS for less than 90 U$S and now mount the PDA in my car for GPS navigation. I just saved $200~400 on a GPS! :D
You can also load it with games and lots of interesting software, and the accessories are inexpensive to boot.
The only things that I don't like are:
Collapsible design (seems floppy)
Screen brightness (can't see much in direct sunlight)
Battery autonomy (not enough)

Luckily you can remedy the battery thing by buying a car adapter and/or the Power-To-Go, a sleek external battery that works like a charm :D

If you see one of these cheap, grab it!

All,

This it the more reliable PDA I've ever owned and I've owned many starting with a Pilot. I've owned everything from HP iPAQs and Jornada 728s and this is the one I kept, while selling the rest. 'Nuff said!

1 out of 5 stars Palm T3 disaster.......2006-01-23

I was about to write my miserable experience in agonizing detail, until I found that others have traveled the same path. It is a pity that a product that has come so far was (in my case, also) mercilessly deserted by its maker in the clinches - in this case a hotsync failure that eventually destroyed not only the data stored in the handheld but also the backups of those data that were religiously placed on the "official"
Secure File PDA Backkup SD card. I am now laboriously retrieving my "essential" passwords (and from now forward keeping copies on the old reliable - PAPER!) It may interest others that I tried the path of logging my problem with an internet chat-group hosted by Google that is focussed on T3 hotsync problems, where I found lots of company, but no answers after waiting several weeks. The best information I have found by far is that in the group in which I am now participating. What a pity! I do not have a beef with the product - even a Rolls has been known to miss a beat occasionally. I do have a serious beef with the maker. But, heck - even GM can screw up, so why not Palm? Where do I go from here? My T3 makes a rather mediocre paper-weight.

This has been a life saver keeping my work and home events straight & scheduled! Worth every penny! More than I need at the time but room to grow!

1 out of 5 stars Worst Product, Worst Company! .......2007-06-09

Had nothing but problems with this thing. Constant freezes, bugs and data loss. This was my 3rd and last Palm device. Swore off PDAs until picking up a BlackBerry 8700g years later. Customer services was ok when in Canada, but the Indian based employees were atrocious (nothing against India - the India based customer services for Dell Computers is excellent). The Palm customer service employees there at the time would answer out of a text and if there was no answer would promise calls by tech support engineers (I never received one that had been promised) or they would pass off the problem or try to blame the customer.
Palms are simply no longer relevant. Go with an iPhone or BlackBerry. This company should be out of business!

2 out of 5 stars It's Great When It's Working.......2006-07-10

I have had my Tungsten T for about 3 years. I would have replaced it long ago, but I had not budgeted to replace this thing the first year I had it.

The main issue is the digitization. It goes out of calibration after every entry. A most frustrating and time-wasting behavior.

When I first got the unit and it was still in warranty I had it "repaired" twice and replaced with a "refurbished" unit once. The problem never went away. To add insult to injury, when I received the refurbished unit ( the last iteration before I fell off the Palm support radar screen), it was missing the four screws that hold the case together. Palm wouldn't do anything about it - the warranty period had expired, they couldn't just send me the screws, but I could pay to have it repaired. Talk about getting screwed. Thank goodness for crazy glue!

I do not plan to buy another Palm product if I can avoid it. Too bad. The products have good features and a nice display, but the reliability sucks and the customer service is a joke.

The unit has other problems, like freezing up once in a while, some of the software that was shipped with the unit (from Palm) does not work and there is no support for it, and the unit has unexplainably lost data on a couple of occasions. I sync my unit every day and after any major amount of data entry as a defense against the latter misbehavior.

I will be looking to a Sony to replace this unit. I expected to get three years out of it and we're just about there. Anyone want a used Palm Tungsten T? Guaranteed to drive you nuts!

4 out of 5 stars compact nearly perfect pda.......2006-01-16

this is not my first palm pda. i purchased this one because of the small form factor, the extended memory, and the sd card slot. also, there was a Veo digital camera offer :-). The palm fits the hand extremely well, especially smaller hands like a woman. The slider function to unveil the graffiti area works smoothly, but one can install Jot or other programs which allow you to write on the screen itself rather than restrict you to the graffiti area. This means you don't need to extend the screen if inconvenient. The screen itself is very sharp and bright. The only issue with this handheld is that buttons will easily turn it on if touched, even if not intended. Do not put this in a case or your pocket where it will be pressed. I highly recommend a hard aluminum case to prevent accidental button pushes (and battery depletion). Other than this issue (which can also be dealt with by using software to block the buttons from turning on the pda), this is a great unit. Bluetooth included, voice recorder, plays mp3 and video.

2 out of 5 stars Its not good!!.......2005-12-30

I hardly like mine at all!! When I put the memory card in, it deletes all the stored data on it.It keeps freezing up when I end up having to hard reset it, which is really annoying.I also think the RAM memory could be better.

Black Leather Case For Use With Tungsten T5 Handhelds

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great product for a great price!.......2007-09-18

This case is perfect for my palm t/x. I paid a good price and received it in a timely manner. I was not able to find a case for my palm any where around where I lived, so Amazon worked out perfectly. I would definitely recommend the site and the purchase to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great case for Palm Pilot.......2007-09-17

This is a great leather case for a palm pilot. You have to protect that great Palm, so use this case. I stopped carrying a wallet, through a couple of credit cards and an ID in the slots. Still fits in your pocket.

3 out of 5 stars pleased, but sharp corner on item.......2007-09-13

Fits the palm well, very durable...seems to have come with a sharp corner or something on it..like a piece of the plastic that holds it together and forms it is sticking out and is sharp.

4 out of 5 stars Palm Slim Leather Case.......2007-09-11

Case is made of quality leather and the Palm TX fits securely in place. Sized right -- can fit easily in a purse. Provides good protection and easy accessiblity to control keys and ability to utilize power cord/adapters.

5 out of 5 stars best case.......2007-09-11

My Palm was getting beat up in my purse, so I purchased this one. It's quite nice with pockets inside for receipts or cards, whatever. The leather seems like it's quality, and so far, I love it! I have a Palm TX which fits perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars Palm Cradle Kit.......2007-09-21

Product works as described. The connection to the power, due to the size of the transformer, takes up a lot of physical space where the plug gets inserted into the outlet so a smaller size, if possible, would be more practical. Very useful to have a cradle to minimize plugging the adapter in and out to transport which can lead to bent connections.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-09-11

There's not enough words to describe how bad a purchase this was. It fried my PDA, a TungstenE3. I left it in the cradle to charge while I ran a few errands. Returned home after about two hours and my PDA was dead. Unfortunately I'd had it about two months and there was no warranty remaining, so I was out the money for this useless thing, plus the cost of a new PDA. Save your money..This is a piece of junk.

4 out of 5 stars 5 stars for utility and 3 stars for value.......2007-09-10

Palm has stopped including charging/synching cradles with its PDAs and Treos. Cradles have some utility, so Palm offers you this kit at an exaggerated price for recent-vintrage Tungsten PDAs. (Be sure to check whether the kit you'r ordering is compatible with the Palm model you have!)

You're buying both more and less than you think with the kit. You get a light cradle, smaller than a pack of cards and weighing about an ounce. You plug the square plug of the power adapter that came with your Palm Tungsten or other compatible Palm device into the cradle, and then you plug in the USB synchronization cable that came with it. When you're done you have what Palm should have given you in the box with the Tungsten.

To justify the price, you also get: A large power adapter that has interchangeable plugs compatitble with US & European wall outlets and a "real" USB cable that boths synchs and charges a Palm device. The "real" USB cable works for a wide range of recent Palm devices, including Treo 650 and newer smart phones. It's very useful for travel if you carry a laptop that has a USB port.

The cradle is worth about two bucks, but the rest of the package makes the price more or less reasonable, considering that accessories are always high profit items. Shame on Palm for not including the cradle in the box with all its products. But if you want a cradle you do get a couple of other potentially useful accessories to make you feel less ripped off. If you just want a combination USB synch and power cable, you can get that from aftermarket suppliers for a lot less than the cradle kit.

5 out of 5 stars Palm Tungsten T5 Cadle.......2007-09-02

5 out of 5 stars Excellent charger.......2007-05-02

I bought this charger for my workplace. I can share this charger with my fellows who use different PAD or blackberry. It works well!. We like this item much!

5 out of 5 stars Eforcity USB Charger/ Good for indicated models........2007-03-29

I got 3 hand me down PDA's that I use for travel. This USB charger has been confirmed by Eforcity to universally work for PDA's mention but not for Zune or Ipod. For those they recommended either stand alone Ipod charger or their white Ipod version of USB charger. This one worked fine for my Palm Tungsten, Clie, and handspring.

3 out of 5 stars The rest of the story.......2007-06-02

I thought, for the price, this would be a metal case. It's plastic but so far it's working ok. I am hoping that the clip that holds the Palm in the case lasts. It is made of plastic too.

I like the SD card holders.

It took me a week or so to realize that the case can be locked shut. I kept a rubber band around it until I sat on it one day and heard a click. Turns out you have to apply pressure on the case to lock it shut. This isn't real obvious and there is no documentation showing this.

Anyway, it works and I'm fairly happy with it. Shipping was prompt and I was kept up to date on things.

1 out of 5 stars Junky case for Palm.......2007-05-13

My Palm TX did not fit well inside this case, it rattled around. A LOT! There is no cushion supplied inside the aluminum case. I ended up taping a pice of bubble mailer to the inside of the case to keep my device cushioned and still. This helped a lot. I had the case for a few weeks when I dropped it (while open no less!!). I must admit the Palm T|X survived the fall, I attribute this to the bubble mailer inside the back of the case! However the case itself bit the dust. The cheap plastic strip that slides ito the groove on the Palm device to hold the Palm inside the case, well it broke clean off upon being dropped.

Also there are NO speaker holes, if you want to hear alarms you better have the case open. No access for charging while case is closed, no access to SD slot without lifting Palm device from case. All in all a poor case for your T|X or any of the T series Palms.

2 out of 5 stars Ehh, not bad but not good.......2007-03-13

Aesthetically pleasing case. Seems quite rugged for the several months I've owned it. Not an exact fit for the TX (even though this case is supposed to work with TX and T5's per Palm) so it can rattle around inside if you don't take up the room with something. I used the foam cupboard liners. Really needs a cut out or for the seam to be re-aligned on the bottom so you can hook up your data/power connection while the unit is in the case. Otherwise you need to prop the palm upwards to prevent stress on the connection.

1 out of 5 stars Palm Case.......2007-03-08

Does not hold up well. Unable to close properly after less than 4 months of use. Consider something else.

4 out of 5 stars 3175WW Hard Case.......2007-02-23

Purchased case along with Palm TX.
Case is sturdy and well made, but too big to fit in a shirt pocket, so I have put it aside and just use the flap that came with the TX. If I carried the TX in a brief case, then the 3175WW would be fine.

4 out of 5 stars Handy.......2007-05-25

I bought this as a spare to travel with and to sync at home. I leave my other cable at work.

Pro:
-Standard USB plug so it doesn't crowd out other plugs in our computer or our 4-port hub
-Built in "sync" button on the end that attaches to the Palm is handy
-Firm connection to the palm
-Good cable length

Con:
-Black connector hard to see, would like a gray or white option
-No cover for the palm connection end, be wary of damaging the exposed pins

Bottom line: recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Nice case - for the right users.......2003-10-08

As folks have previously mentioned, this case does not allow easy access to the voicememo controls / headset jack on the left side of the T/T2. However, you can turn the unit around in the case if you need those on a regular basis.

Contrary to other reviewers, I have NOT found the power-on issue to be a big problem. The case does have two small leather loops on the inside-bottom of the front cover that are designed to prevent the buttons from depressing. I have a stack of business cards in the front slot in the case which may provide a better buffer for the buttons. Then again, it may be that I'm just relatively careful with my PDA and don't bounce it around a lot.

As one of the only cases designed specifically for the T/T2 line, this case will certainly please most users.

2 out of 5 stars Barely adequate.......2003-09-05

When I bought this case shortly after the TT came out, there weren't a lot of choices. I settled on this case because I don't like metal, but now wish I'd bought the metal case. My TT is a very important tool for me in my work as an ER nurse, and it is aggravating to pull it out to access ePocrates and get a blank screen because it accidentally got turned on in my pocket and drained the battery. Even tho I have it set to turn itself off after a minute, it must get turned on frequently as I standup, sit down, and move about the department. At least once a week this happens, where I'll go to work with a full battery, and try to turn it on to find it drained.

The case is nice looking, and fine if you carry your TT in a briefcase or a large purse or backpack. If you have to carry it in a pocket, as I do, you will not be happy.

2 out of 5 stars ok but flawed.......2003-08-25

I agree with some of the comments about the unit switching itself on when the case is closed. This is simply ridiculous. If the case is in a bag and something presses on it, the date book or address book button will switch the palm on and there goes your battery without you noticing it. It's happened twice in the last month and it happens even if you don't have anything in the credit card sleeves on the left hand side cover. I used to have a case for my 500 that closed all the way with a zipper (better protection) and never ran into that problem. Otherwise this case is ok.

3 out of 5 stars Adequate, but could be better.......2003-06-26

When you get a Tungsten T you want to protect it. There are not that many options, since the Tungsten is a smaller size than most handhelds.

The case and attachment is symmetrical , so if you want access to the headphone jack and recorder button (which can be configured to open an MP3 player instead), just turn your Tungsten around in the case. Pity Palm didn't realize and at least suggest this - or better still design for it!

I like the sleeves for Credit/business cards and the little hidden pockets for (2) extra SD cards.

Would be nice to have a case which:
1. Protects the handheld well
2. doesn't have to be removed to HotSync. (I guess this can be worked around with Bluetooth synch. in this case.)
3. Provides sufficient access to non-visual apps. Like MP3 and voice recording. At the moment, you can start Real Player with the VoiceRecord button on the side but it does start playing automatically. So you have to find the play button on the front somehow... Would be a nice option in the preferences of Real Player. (Will have to check out some other players.)
4. The clasp is flexible as content grows but a little awkward.

One option is to extend the Tungsten out of the bottom of the case, whilst jogging, but this is less than ideal!

This case is adequate, but only that. Buttons can be pressed accidentally but are hard to get at when you want to. (For example when you have the Palm in your pocket as an MP3 player.)
I think there is a real opportunity for someone to redesign the Palm cases to be more practical for multiple uses - make a case that both protects and is practical for everyday use.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars looks nice...but.......2004-05-11

Its probably the nicest looking case for the Tungsten T2, but does not provide a great deal of protection or usefulness.
The T2 snaps in giving you access to being able to expand it via the open top, but it does not always rest securely in the case and can fall out of position relatively easily. It also is not very functional. It holds 2 mmr cards backwards so you cannot see the title of the card and it does not offer any kind of storage space for headphones, business cards, or anything else. It also folds open but the cover does not bend all the way behind the back of the case, so it is a bit cumbersome to hold in one hand.

3 out of 5 stars It works OK, but not as sturdy as it looks.......2004-02-18

The pictures give you the impression that this case is especially "hard" and sturdy, but in fact its still mostly plastic and there is some play in the case hinge.

Also, as others have mentioned, the SD cards don't stay in too well. But a little bit of velcro (one side only) placed just above where the cards sit does the trick.

1 out of 5 stars DOES NOT FIT T3!!.......2003-10-07

This item is listed under "accessories" for a Palm Tungsten T3 in Amazon's site. It does NOT fit the T3, the T3 is slightly taller than the TT and T2.

Do not buy this if you own a T3. In fact, don't buy it if you have a TT or T2 either, as it is not a very good case. It is plastic, even though it is billed as "aluminum," it is HUGE and bulky compared to your TT, which is why you bought it in the first place, right?

There are several better options out there.

3 out of 5 stars Recommend with Caveats...........2003-07-25

As I do a lot of traveling, a hard case has always been essential for my Palm. The hard case on my old Palm V protected it fantastically despite drops, falls, kicks, and the occasional person treading on it. Therefore, I felt that a hard case would be essential for my new Tungsten T.

The hard case has a lot of features I like. The notch on the back allows for easy PULL-UP of the Tungsten to reach the Graffiti pad (something that a few previous reviewers didn't catch - admittedly it took me a couple false tries to figure it out, as the pullup vs pulldown is a little counter intuitive). The Palm slides easily and securely in the case via the spring loaded construction, although I *strongly* recommend that the Palm be in its compressed mode when pushing it into the case. The case is just high enough that if you drop it upside down the stylus and expansion cards don't pop out.

The negatives....The poor design on the expansion card holders has already been hashed out by many reviewers. I'll add an additional complaint that when I dropped the closed case, one of the cards popped out, and subsequently rattled about in the interior. My biggest complaint, however, is that the case **just** squeaks past my definition of "too big". The Palm V hard case slipped easily into my pants pockets. The Tungsten case fits in my pocket, but looks bulky (yes, I *am* vain). Also, I've got fairly small hands, and the hard case just isn't comfortable in them. If you're a guy or a gal with bigger hands than mine, this probably isn't an issue.

In summary, I still think there are more pros than cons for this product. However, for myself, I intend to use this hard case only when I'm actively traveling, and am using the "scuba case" for day-to-day activities.

4 out of 5 stars Quite good.......2003-06-30

This case has been reasonably well made, although there are a couple of gripes whcih have already been well documented in this area by others, but I will reiterate to confirm them.

1. The SD holding slots on the back of the front cover, for whatever reason Palm, has chosen to have the SD cards conduit bits exposed to fingers when they are inserted and removed. No logic there.

2. It would have been nice to be able to bend the front cover all way back so that the Tungsten is able to sit comfortable in one hand instead of having to support the unit from the base.

Besides, that the 2 little hooks which keep the Tungsten in place work quite well, making it simple to insert and remove for syncing/charging purposes. It does provide a nice finish to the Tungsten unit, although in theory it should be the same 'colour and finish' as the Tungsten (it's a silver/aluminium finish instead of the grey/gun metal finish of the Tungsten).

Having said all that, I still believe it's the best case for the Tungsten T on the market. The rhino skin equivalent for the Tungsten is not nearly as well made as their previous version for the Palm Vx. The hinge is terrible. All the other cases are just not as practical IMHO.
