Solid, but a couple quirky design decisions........2007-09-21
This is a solidly built, highly protective case for the Palm Tungsten TX (I assume it also works well for the T5, but this one was bought for a TX). The design is simple; it consists of an aluminum hardshell lined with thin neoprene that provides shock protection. It doesn't add much to the size or weight of the TX, and most everything is accessible with the case shut (you probably can't put it in a crade-type charger, but that's about it.) Overall quality seems pretty good, and your TX is likely to survive a drop from 'held in your hand' height to the floor with no or minimal cosmetic damage.
There are, however, two quirky things with the design that caused me to ding it a star in the rating.
1) The latch/grip point you use to open the case is, IMO, poorly designed. It is fairly difficult to open the case with one hand, since the little grippy bit on the 'front' of the case is hard to grip/push effectively. There is a small lip on the 'back' side that is easy to push against -- but you normally would open the case by pulling the 'front' towards you, not pushing the 'back' away. On the bright side, it is not going to come open accidentally in a bag or anything like that.
2) The SD card slots in the inside front of the unit seem to be backwards. The way the cards go into the slots, you are looking at the backside of them -- and the contacts are exposed and vulnerable to damage! They should be flipped around the other way so that the contacts are protected better and you can see the labels on the front of the cards.
The belt clip isn't that great -- it doesn't 'lock' like some other designs I've seen, so the PDA can swing and rotate annoyingly -- but at least is solidly built and doesn't look like it will fall apart or fall off. If you want something to keep a TX on your hip, look elsewhere.
This case is nearly identical in design to the "Palm TX Armor Case" (which I also ordered for comparison purposes). That case is available in black if you want a hard case that isn't silver in color. I kept this one because the it seemed a little sturdier and it came with a 2-year product protection label from StuffBak for free.
definitely recommend to others.......2007-09-13
I bought this case to use with my palm TX, chosen after reading other reviews on this product, as well as other products i was considering. The case fits great, looks great and seems very durable. I have no complaints whatsoever.
Not perfect, but the best on the market.......2007-09-01
Even after reading the reviews on here about this case and the case that Palm themselves make, I still opted to buy the true Palm case at my local electronics store. I liked it's appearance better, and I REALLY liked that the door folded all the way back, so the item is not as bulky when using/referencing it on the go. But, as the amazon reviews state, it's latching mechanism is very poor. Mine did not break in the one week before I returned the item, but it was very hard to close and would take me considerable time to get it latched. Also, it's not a tight fit--the Palm rattles around like crazy in there, and you would think the Palm people would at least know how big their own device is!!
So I ordered this Rhinoskin case the following day, and returned the Palm case once it arrived. I am very pleased with my decision, though it is sad that the Rhino case does not have a completely hinging door that can fully rotate back--it can be a little awkward and clumsy to hold when referencing it while talking to a patient out in the aisle (I'm a pharmacist). But, it's super easy to open and close and feels very secure when latched. And, it's very protective (probably the most important feature!). It was in my white coat pocket the other night, when I picked my coat up upside down, and the Palm fell to the sidewalk. I freaked, but all was OK with the Rhinoskin. :)
Fit the Palm TX better than a glove.......2007-08-26
The "rhino skin" palmOne Tungsten TX/T5 Aluminum case is the perfect case for the Tungsten TX. It feels very rugged, fits extremely well, yet it is very easy to use the TX while it's still in the case. Also, all the ports (IR, SD, Power, Sync) can be accessed while the case is closed. I highly recommend this case.
solid, but difficult to open and a bit rough.......2007-08-21
Fit great and look pretty strong. It is so difficult to open and the case unless you just ate something sweet. Dropped it once try to pry it open with my fingers. Luckily I was on the sofa. The outside case is not sanded completetly as you can feel some rough spots which is annoying something.

Amazon.com Product Description
PalmOne stretches the possibilities with the Tungsten T5, the first handheld from PalmOne to utilize flash memory. In addition to a groundbreaking 256 MB of memory, the sleek, slim Tungsten T5 features a high-resolution 320 x 480-pixel screen, a fast 416 MHz Intel Xscale processor, Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and a Secure Digital memory card expansion slot. And, of course, the Tungsten T5 features PalmOne's suite of information management applications, the ability to edit Word- and Excel-compatible files, and synchronization with Microsoft Outlook (Windows only).
|

See a detailed diagram of the PalmOne Tungsten T5's features |
Internal Flash Memory
Built for today's mobile professional, the Tungsten T5's 256 MB of memory actually provides 215 MB of user-available memory (55 MB for built-in applications and 160 MB of internal flash drive memory). Connect it to your PC or Mac and use it as you would a USB flash memory drive to transfer data and multimedia files from work to home. To access files stored on the handheld, simply select Drive Mode on the handheld and plug the included HotSync cable into a USB port.
To add files, just drag and drop them from your PC desktop to the new File Transfer application (installed with Palm Desktop; Windows only). A live desktop window gives you instant access to data and information stored on the handheld's internal drive--without the need for synchronizing the handheld to move files. |
Multimedia
The included RealPlayer for Palm OS enables you to listen to MP3s stored on optional expansion cards via the built-in speaker on the Tungsten T5 or, for stereo sound, on optional stereo headphones or ear buds. The updated Media application lets you view (and show off) transferred photos and videos.
Display
Unlike the Tungsten T3, which required you to slide the handheld's bottom open to activate the screen's landscape mode, the Tungsten T5's screen offers widescreen viewing at all times. The bright 320 x 480 transreflective TFT color display supports more than 65,000 colors. You can easily switch between portrait and landscape view, as well as open an active input area at the bottom of the screen.
Connectivity and Expansion
With built-in wireless Bluetooth connectivity, you can synchronize the Tungsten T5 with a Bluetooth-enabled computer from across the room (within a range of 10 meters, or approximately 30 feet). But that's just the start. Using a compatible Bluetooth-enabled phone, you can send and receive e-mail and connect to the Web, send multimedia (MMS) or text (SMS) messages, and even automatically dial any number in your handheld's Contact's application. You can also synchronize data the "old-fashioned" way via the USB connection at the base of the handheld.
The Tungsten T5 uses MultiMedia Card and Secure Digital expansion cards, which instantly add software applications, additional memory, large databases, and more without taking up built-in memory space.
Operating System and Software
Veteran Palm OS handheld users will immediately notice the new Favorites view, which provides easy access to applications, files, and folders. The installed Palm OS 5.4 also introduces the Files application, which enables easy navigation among folders and files. It uses the intuitive and easy-to-learn Graffiti 2 writing software to input data into the handheld (as well as an on-screen keyboard). Windows users can synchronize their calendar, contacts, tasks, and notes with Microsoft Outlook. The Palm OS features the following organizer applications:
- Contacts: Lets you store several addresses for each contact, and with new fields for more phone numbers, multiple e-mail addresses, instant messenger IDs, and Web sites.
- Calendar: Use the new Agenda view to see upcoming calendar events, tasks due, and important e-mail, and color-code your events to provide an easy way to reference your calendar in the Agenda, Day, Week, and Month views. Take more notes, or synchronize more details from your desktop, in the larger Memos and Notes fields.
- Tasks: Use tasks with alarms and repeating tasks to set reminders for important commients.
Additional Software
The Tungsten T5 includes Documents to Go 7.0, which provides the ability to create and edit Word- and Excel-compatible files and view and carry PowerPoint files (in native format) with no desktop conversion required. The included Software Essentials CD-ROM also contains eReader, Acrobat Reader, Solitaire, and Audible Player for palmOne handhelds (Windows only).
What's in the Box
This package contains the Tungsten T5 handheld, a built-in rechargeable battery, a carrying case, a USB HotSync cable, a power cable, a stylus, a CD-ROM with Palm Desktop 4.1 software for Windows and Mac (as well as bonus software), and a printed Getting Started guide.
Tech Talk: Flash Memory
Flash memory, a form of electronic memory, is used for easy and safe information storage. Its low power consumption and light weight make flash memory ideal for mobile devices. In addition, flash memory holds information without a charge or power, just like a memory card saves pictures when not connected to a digital camera. The flash memory in the Tungsten T5 handheld will maintain its data even when power is exhausted. Simply charge the handheld again and the data is there.
Tech Talk: Macintosh Users
While the Tungsten T5's new File Transfer application is a Windows-only feature, Mac users can simply mount the handheld as an external drive, and then proceed to drag and drop files from the Finder to the handheld. Note, however, that the Tungsten T5's Palm OS environment is unavailable when connected in this mode.

good pda.......... but a disappointment..........2007-08-16
I purchased the T5 for $450 including original PALMONE leather case when it was released on the market on 2005. everything was Ok and exactly as they said except for some frequent fatal errors that you have no choice but to reset, etc. etc. I've encountered them a few months after. The casing itself is cheap it got easily scratched with its OWN removable front cover AND leather case!! Now, it made a permanent mark on the faceplate. The Power button is probably picked up from some garbage dump near their factory and they managed to assemble it with the Four-hundred Dollar PDA... I hate it! You have to press really deep to just turn it on/off and a couple of times it doesn't turn on/off! Other than that, its pretty fast and the screen is excellent bright and large enough compared to other PDAs
someone must stand up for this machine!!!.......2007-06-08
I have had this product for three years. NEVER replaced the battery or worried about power failure. Use it EVERYDAY. Rare as a blue moon crash and it quickly regains complete composure- no data loss. Accidental drop(while in the very nice Aluminum case which can be purchased for it) X3 without a blink of function loss.
It, 3 years ago, was #2 on Palm's product spec list of the latest and greatest features secont to LifeDrive and all you had to do is buy a gigabite card to make it equal.
Gota free Wi-fi card with purchase (at the Palm site-sorry Amazon).
I use it for data base/reference function as a physician. Runs all standard, well known medial software programs without a hitch. Palms in general don't do well with freeware or not "off the shelf" stuff. These things will crash the machine and all it's programs, I know for a fact.
I would buy it again. It is funny that the newest Palm everyone is buying now, the TX, looks just like the T5( aluminum case and all).
No "slider" that is simply a moving part that will eventually fail (no longer stay un-slided when you don't need it). I don't really think the new product is any better then this one I bought 3 years ago.
It will let you down.......2007-03-18
There are many aspects of the T5 people want to count as negatives. For me I consider them annoyances but not killers. I would like to have WiFi with my PDA but I am not dead with out it. More memory is always good but the T5 isn't on the hurting side. It's not a good mp3 player with the memory it has. And even if you have a 2G card with mp3's it's not like this is what you would buy for MP3s. But as far as contact information, on the go applications etc.. I would consider this as good as any other. The problem as I have just found out is these are known to die. I haven't heard of this issue till it happened to me but it seems the T5 will at some point Die. It will lock up and even after all the resets listed from Palm it will not come back to even a factory state. You will have a Palm Powered logo screen with a small black line flashing on the top.
There are a couple of fixes. If you are under warranty you can send it back to Palm for them to make it better. Or you can remove the battery and solder it back. This is a serious design issue that Palm is more than happy to charge you for.
Until I ran into this I would have rated this a 4/5. Until this happened the device did what I expected it to do. I read the box before buying it and knew it had some lack of cool factor with the no WiFi. But it has one of the fastest processors (available at that time) in a PDA. Which was a different type of cool. The bluetooth
works well enough I haven't had any issues with it. You can surf the net with bluetooth so wifi isn't really that big of a deal.
But if you can't trust your device is going to be working the next day it really
doesn't matter what cool feature it has. This has been a very expensive let down.
I don't want to buy another Palm after this experience but I am not sure what to
switch to....
poor reliability.......2006-09-08
First T5 lasted 6 months, then just refused to start - was replaced under warranty. This one locked up after about 3 months - was replaced again under warranty. The third T5 lasted about 5 months. It's now out of warranty and won't start or reset. No - I'm not rough on my PDAs. None of them got even as much as a scratch. Each one looked like new when it "broke". The first 2 times, Palm told me the ROM had failed. I guess it's the same problem again, but I'm not spending $169 to get it swapped for another faulty T5. Good bye Palm.
Out of the box I think it's a good PDA, so check those 4 and 5 star reviews to see how long the users have had their PDAs before you buy.
I am enjoying the T5.......2006-08-08
Other than having to re-set a bit more than I would expect I think this PDA is great. I would definitely recommend it!!

Customer Reviews:
Quality Case for Palm TX.......2007-03-09
Pros: Quality construction that snuggly holds my PDA, two cc slots, one larger slot, and two SD card slots, cut-out for headphone jack and speaker, cut-out for USB /power connection
Cons: must take PDA out of the case to reset, install onto charging cradle, and remove the stylus, bottom corners of PDA exposed.
Includes a fancy belt clip. However, I don't use belt clips - clip can be removed and the remaining attachment point does not interfere with me sliding entire unit easily into my front pocket. Good quality leather construction with plenty of slots to carry other stuff. My only complaint is that I have to take my PDA out of the case to use my desktop cradle (not required if only using charging/synch cable & power cord) and to reset my PDA (hence loses one star).

Black Leather Case For Use With Tungsten T5 Handhelds
Customer Reviews:
Great product for a great price!.......2007-09-18
This case is perfect for my palm t/x. I paid a good price and received it in a timely manner. I was not able to find a case for my palm any where around where I lived, so Amazon worked out perfectly. I would definitely recommend the site and the purchase to anyone.
Great case for Palm Pilot.......2007-09-17
This is a great leather case for a palm pilot. You have to protect that great Palm, so use this case. I stopped carrying a wallet, through a couple of credit cards and an ID in the slots. Still fits in your pocket.
pleased, but sharp corner on item.......2007-09-13
Fits the palm well, very durable...seems to have come with a sharp corner or something on it..like a piece of the plastic that holds it together and forms it is sticking out and is sharp.
Palm Slim Leather Case.......2007-09-11
Case is made of quality leather and the Palm TX fits securely in place. Sized right -- can fit easily in a purse. Provides good protection and easy accessiblity to control keys and ability to utilize power cord/adapters.
best case.......2007-09-11
My Palm was getting beat up in my purse, so I purchased this one. It's quite nice with pockets inside for receipts or cards, whatever. The leather seems like it's quality, and so far, I love it! I have a Palm TX which fits perfectly.

Palm Cradle Kit.......2007-09-21
Product works as described. The connection to the power, due to the size of the transformer, takes up a lot of physical space where the plug gets inserted into the outlet so a smaller size, if possible, would be more practical. Very useful to have a cradle to minimize plugging the adapter in and out to transport which can lead to bent connections.
Don't Waste Your Money.......2007-09-11
There's not enough words to describe how bad a purchase this was. It fried my PDA, a TungstenE3. I left it in the cradle to charge while I ran a few errands. Returned home after about two hours and my PDA was dead. Unfortunately I'd had it about two months and there was no warranty remaining, so I was out the money for this useless thing, plus the cost of a new PDA. Save your money..This is a piece of junk.
5 stars for utility and 3 stars for value.......2007-09-10
Palm has stopped including charging/synching cradles with its PDAs and Treos. Cradles have some utility, so Palm offers you this kit at an exaggerated price for recent-vintrage Tungsten PDAs. (Be sure to check whether the kit you'r ordering is compatible with the Palm model you have!)
You're buying both more and less than you think with the kit. You get a light cradle, smaller than a pack of cards and weighing about an ounce. You plug the square plug of the power adapter that came with your Palm Tungsten or other compatible Palm device into the cradle, and then you plug in the USB synchronization cable that came with it. When you're done you have what Palm should have given you in the box with the Tungsten.
To justify the price, you also get: A large power adapter that has interchangeable plugs compatitble with US & European wall outlets and a "real" USB cable that boths synchs and charges a Palm device. The "real" USB cable works for a wide range of recent Palm devices, including Treo 650 and newer smart phones. It's very useful for travel if you carry a laptop that has a USB port.
The cradle is worth about two bucks, but the rest of the package makes the price more or less reasonable, considering that accessories are always high profit items. Shame on Palm for not including the cradle in the box with all its products. But if you want a cradle you do get a couple of other potentially useful accessories to make you feel less ripped off. If you just want a combination USB synch and power cable, you can get that from aftermarket suppliers for a lot less than the cradle kit.
One Flaw.......2007-09-09
This is a great product, it how ever has a flaw, the light stays on and is very bright, it keeps me awake at night.

Works perfecly and good price.......2007-08-15
This cable works great with my Treo 680. It syncs and recharges my Treo when connected to the computer USB port.
Iffy.......2007-05-13
This product caught my attention because the new E2 needs 2 gadgets to charge and sync, while this does both in one. However, the connection is iffy (need to jiggle the wire to get it to connect correctly), and it shorted out my computer twice. I hope someone invents one that is dependable.
Works well.......2007-04-28
I love this cable - it allows me to connect any USB device to my PC. Works with my Palm. I bought it for Treo 650 and it works great. A whole lot cheaper than what cellular stores want for these.
where's the button? And a solution.......2007-02-02
When this cable arrived there was no button familiar to Palm users to hotsync; I could not get it to work and was very frustrated. After some conversation with customer service, I did some exploring and discovered that I can initiate a hotsync from the PDA ... go to the main menu, go to hotsync screen and tap the hotsync graphic; it's actually an icon and will then initiate hotsync.
No button needed.

Does not work for mac.......2007-01-10
This device does not work properly with OS X 10.4
It is missing the sync button that comes on the OEM
version of this cable, which makes this thing useless.
Atleast, it does work as a USB charger for the treo 650.

Brushed Aluminum Case For Storage and Protection of the Palm T/X and Tungsten Handhelds / 2 SD card holders
Customer Reviews:
The rest of the story.......2007-06-02
I thought, for the price, this would be a metal case. It's plastic but so far it's working ok. I am hoping that the clip that holds the Palm in the case lasts. It is made of plastic too.
I like the SD card holders.
It took me a week or so to realize that the case can be locked shut. I kept a rubber band around it until I sat on it one day and heard a click. Turns out you have to apply pressure on the case to lock it shut. This isn't real obvious and there is no documentation showing this.
Anyway, it works and I'm fairly happy with it. Shipping was prompt and I was kept up to date on things.
Junky case for Palm.......2007-05-13
My Palm TX did not fit well inside this case, it rattled around. A LOT! There is no cushion supplied inside the aluminum case. I ended up taping a pice of bubble mailer to the inside of the case to keep my device cushioned and still. This helped a lot. I had the case for a few weeks when I dropped it (while open no less!!). I must admit the Palm T|X survived the fall, I attribute this to the bubble mailer inside the back of the case! However the case itself bit the dust. The cheap plastic strip that slides ito the groove on the Palm device to hold the Palm inside the case, well it broke clean off upon being dropped.
Also there are NO speaker holes, if you want to hear alarms you better have the case open. No access for charging while case is closed, no access to SD slot without lifting Palm device from case. All in all a poor case for your T|X or any of the T series Palms.
Ehh, not bad but not good.......2007-03-13
Aesthetically pleasing case. Seems quite rugged for the several months I've owned it. Not an exact fit for the TX (even though this case is supposed to work with TX and T5's per Palm) so it can rattle around inside if you don't take up the room with something. I used the foam cupboard liners. Really needs a cut out or for the seam to be re-aligned on the bottom so you can hook up your data/power connection while the unit is in the case. Otherwise you need to prop the palm upwards to prevent stress on the connection.
Palm Case.......2007-03-08
Does not hold up well. Unable to close properly after less than 4 months of use. Consider something else.
3175WW Hard Case.......2007-02-23
Purchased case along with Palm TX.
Case is sturdy and well made, but too big to fit in a shirt pocket, so I have put it aside and just use the flap that came with the TX. If I carried the TX in a brief case, then the 3175WW would be fine.
Customer Reviews:
Great case but problematic belt clip design.......2007-08-24
The quality of Krusell's cases is very high and I really like them (I have had two). One feature of these cases that is appealing is Krusell's Multidapt system that enables you to purchase different clips for attaching a case to your dashboard in your car, the strap on your backpack, the handlebar on your bike, etc. You can even remove the button on the back of the case entirely. So, if I like these cases so well, why only 3 stars? The problem is that the button that attaches to the back of the case and the slot into which it slides is flimsy. I have have this fail about 3 times - making it impossible to securely attach the case to anything. Fortunately, Krusell replaced my cases for free but it gets annoying. If you want a case that attaches to many places, this is really a great choice. If you only want to attach it to your belt, I have found other cases more durable; in particular, E&B's Slipper for the TX is very solid and less prone to breakage.
Excellent!.......2007-08-06
This case is outstanding! Half the price of the "palm" brand cases, but exquisit quality.
Good for what it's good for.......2007-03-30
Nothing really wrong with this case. It looks great and does are fair job at protecting my Palm TX. I work in a very rough and tumble environment and my palm has survived. I have had a problem with the with it slipping out the case a little and making the buttons kind of difficult to get to. Other wise not bad for the price
Nice material; imperfect fit.......2007-02-22
This case was delivered as promised. Overall, I'm satisfied with it since I prefer a case with this form factor. Also, the case material is quite good, but I have two problems with it. First, the TX doesn't slide down all the way into the case so that the button cut-out hangs slightly too low over the top of the buttons for my taste. Second, the belt clip was rather flimsy. After using it for two weeks, it no longer secures the TX strongly to the belt and the device can be easily slipped off (i.e., by a thief) because the metal band warped slightly after ordinary use. Fortunately, the case is compatible with similar clips from other vendors.
fast service, wonderful product.......2007-02-19
after debating on over a dozen palm leather cases, this was the best choice. fits extremely well the TX, easy to open and use. love the way the top folds back and locks with the magnetic closure. better than the ones that open like a book, wonderful product.
