Worked great for a while.......2002-01-27

I bought this camera a couple of years ago and it worked great and took great pictures until recently. First, it started to delay when taking pictures. I had to wait longer and longer, it seemed, each time I tried to take another picture. Then, I was rewinding the film that contained pictures of our son's first Christmas and the film got stuck in the camera. There is no forcing the film compartment door open and I stripped the gears on the door opener when I tried to pry it open. I ended taking it to a professional photo repair shop and spent $15 to have the camera taken apart around the film to save the pictures. I had to buy a new camera because this one is now worthless.

i just got this camera and have not really been able to use it much, hence only the 3 rating. it could very well be a 5 but the only time i got to use it was in the dark.

its easy to use, and the timer function is great for those priceless money shots.

The red eye reduction works great, and the close ups "come" out nicely too, but most importantly Ben's mom likes it a lot.

Issues other than sound.......2005-07-04

For a complex product the user's manual is a key component. It is possible that the manual for the 2805 is the worst publication in the history of the English language. It makes learning a computer operating system seem like child's play. It is disorderly, illogical, and apparently designed to make the new owner wish he had never laid eyes on the receiver. The iPod has effectively shown that function is as important as sound quality in a high-ticket audio product, but Denon certainly hasn't gotten the message.

I have also recently purchased a Canon 20D digital camera. It functions at a similar level of complexity to this receiver. The camera comes with a well-written, logically organized, easily understood manual. If you need to refresh your memory about a camera function, you simply locate what you want in the index. If you want to locate something in the 2805 manual, you will have to scan through the entire manual until you stumble upon it. That is, if you can even understand the gibberish enough to know when you have found what you wanted.

It isn't sufficient to put out a quality product; it must also be a pleasure to use. If pilots had to rely on Denon manuals, planes would fall from the sky with grim regularity. If doctors were trained with Denon manuals, they wouldn't know a shinbone from a tonsil. In my view, a manufacturer has a duty to provide coherent product instructions. And Denon's being Japanese is hardly an excuse; so are Canon and countless other companies that sell products with coherent manuals to the English-language market. This is not 1963.

Adding insult to injury, Denon provides no live support; the company expects you to get help from your dealer. Some dealers may be very helpful, but what if you bought the product from a dealer who isn't helpful, or through the Internet? Tough luck.

Then there is the issue of price. Denon has a dire warning on its web site that your warranty will be invalid if you do not purchase from an authorized dealer. But you can easily buy from unauthorized dealers who have been selling Denon at discount prices for many years. Since Denon can easily track its product by serial number, you have to wonder what game the company is playing. My guess is Denon likes the grey market so long as it can keep the authorized sale price of its products inflated. People who want a discount are left without warranty service. That way Denon has its cake and eats it, too.

Excellant Receiver for the money.......2005-05-05

I just purchased this receiver and found it to be quite wonderful. The Dolby Digital and DTS surround for DVD's is terrific. It's handling of CD's is very, very good too. I found it easy to set up and the auto set up of the speakers is very easy to do. My only complaint is that the remote is a little bit confusing when you first start using it, but once you get used to it's layout and which buttons handle what feature, then it's a breeze to operate. It's bit on the heavy side to hold in your hand, but otherwise it's very good. Highly recommended for it's advanced features and ease of operation.

I previously owned a Yamaha DSP-1000 sound processor that had more power, sounded as good or better than the Denon, and had a much better remote and manual. I would not recommend it for the above reasons.

The Basics

A Good Radio..........2005-04-17

I recently bought and installed this radio in my truck, and I have not had any problems yet!!! A few minor details are the noise blanker seems really sesitive (sometimes when it is on I do not receive any traffic) but that is about it. I enjoy Cobra products, this is my second radio (I just traded up from a 25NWXT), I have a Cobra HG2000 Antenna, and I am waiting on a Cobra Mic for my radio. So far no problems with any of it and I hope to have none down the road!!!!!

Don't believe the last review. I had mine about a month before I tossed it out the window somewhere near Charlotte, NC. Nothing but problems, barely recieved or transmitted and was extremely weak when it did. I actually had truckers ask me to stop transmitting because all they could hear was squealing when I keyed. Tossed it, kept my K40 antenna, bought a Uniden Pro538W and have loved it! Much better radio! Don't buy anything Cobra makes!

Very reliable........2002-02-24

I've had my Cobra 29 for over five years now. It's been in four different trucks, and traveled over 500,000 miles with me. Once I added two wilson antennas and a power mic, I can get out over four miles on a good night. My personal record is a line of sight 130 miles from a mountainside. I love it. I was thinking of getting a galaxy, but why? I have a great radio here.
