4 out of 5 stars Very good wireless keyboard/mouse option.......2007-09-18

This is a great product for the price. All of your most-used functions (calculator, My Documents, browser, volume control, etc.) at the push of a button. The only problem I've had is when playing music through iTunes, the mute button doesn't work. Strange conflict between software and hardware. This is the only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars from me (and that sounds like more of a problem with iTunes, since that's the only app that has the issue).

4 out of 5 stars Works great as long as you don't install the software........2007-09-03

This product is pretty much plug and play if you are running XP or Vista. IT WORKS GREAT WITHOUT THE SOFTWARE. In fact installing the software actually makes this product function worse. By not installing the software, you will not be able to use some of the multimedia buttons (My Docs, My Pics, My Music, and the Media Play Controls), I never really missed these buttons any way.

Its a solid product at a good price which does not drain batteries (batteries will last about 4-6 months). Mine even came with a bonus travel mouse which I use with my laptop. Recommended if you can live withs its quirks.

5 out of 5 stars Very Nice Set !.......2007-08-28

I have to start remembering to look at Amazon prices first before I buy elsewhere, I actually went to the Staples Store, they had this set for $54.98. But they did have one out, on display. The keyboard keys have a very nice feel to them, as well as the options and design make typing a very easy task. The keyboard is quiet when you type and the mouse is a very nice addition to the set. The mouse moves very quickly and accurately, the setup was easy. I just installed the software and plugged the USB into the back of the computer and it recogonized the new hardware immediately. Batteries were included, which makes it an even better deal.

Great buy, esp if this is your first time wireless keyboard and mouse, as it is mine. And for thsi Amazon price, you can't go wrong, especially due to the free shipping. Grab it now, you wont be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars my microsoft wireless optical desktop.......2007-07-26

This is a terrific item to accompany your laptop at home. The wireless features are always a plus and working with a mouse instead of the mouse provided on a laptop is so much easier. This is definitely a must have item for your home.

4 out of 5 stars Nice wireless set.......2007-07-16

This is a really good "basic" wireless keyboard and mouse set. The software installed just find and after that I plugged in the receiver and was ready to go. It was really snappy and responsive right out of the box. Sometimes people get issues because the battery is low to begin with (remember the battery has been sitting in the package since it was shipped to Amazon, Best Buy, Staples, etc.) Also the proximity of portable phones, other wireless devices, etc will sometimes mess with the signal.

I really like the keyboard. It has a soft feel and is rather quite comfortable. It's not like those old loud IMB clicky types. Depending on your preference you might find the keyboard "mushy" but I think it's just right. There's a few special function keys for e-mail, web homepage and volume controls. I can do without most of them except for the calculator quick launch button. Its great to just hit a button have the calculator popup. I think all keyboards should have this.

The mouse is good too. It's a basic optical mouse a two button one scroll wheel job. It's nothing fancy but then again I don't need a fancy mouse with 5 or 7 buttons. The scroll wheel is nice. It's a clicky one meaning you can scroll line-by-line. There are ridges on the wheel itself which I appreciate as I severely dislike the smooth wheels. The mouse is a bit heavy towards the back end. Probably because both the battery and transmitter are there but it only takes a few minutes to get used to.

There are two things that I don't like but they aren't deal breakers. The first is the rather large receiver. It's not a deal breaker but if you've got limited desktop space it's a pain for sure. The second is that the mouse and keyboard are always "on". As far as I can tell they don't auto-hibernate when not in use for a while or turn themselves off when the computer is shutdown. So in order to fully power them off you've got to take the battery out. I have owned the mouse that's included in the set separately and used it with my old computer. The battery (2 AAs) lasted for about 3 months. I'm sure if I pulled them out every time I shut the computer down it would have lasted for 6. But I'm lazy and had a bag full of AAs so what did I care?

This is a very good product for a decent price. I don't know what's up with the bad reviews they must have gotten a lemon or something because every MS mouse or keyboard I've used has been awesome. If fact the only bad keyboards and mice I've used have been non-MS ones. The Logitech mice are too large and expensive. Belkin keyboards are awful and anything made by Kensington is just atrocious. Overall, I really like this keyboard mouse set and if you can pick it up on the cheap it's a great product.

Amazon.com Product Description

Add wireless freedom, stylish looks, and one-touch features to your desktop with the Wireless Optical Desktop Pro keyboard and mouse combination. This desktop package features customizable keys, optical mouse technology, and a comfortable, ergonomic design. The Wireless MultiMedia keyboard's split, gently sloped shape encourages a natural hand, wrist, and forearm position for maximum comfort. Also, your digital media activities are within easy reach--start, play, and navigate music and video clips with the touch of a button. Customizable hot keys let you quickly start Messenger, Mail, Internet, and Calculator programs. And get one-touch access to files stored in the My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music folders in Windows. Perform common tasks right from your keyboard--press a button to open, close, and save documents, send and forward e-mails, put the computer to sleep, log off, and more. Press the F LOCK key to toggle between standard and enhanced function key commands.

The mouse's wider, clear scroll wheel allows you to comfortably move through documents and Web pages quickly without clicking the scroll bar. Accelerated scrolling reacts to how quickly you roll the wheel, saving you time and effort. And the optical sensor replaces your mouse ball, for accuracy and precision--no mouse pad needed. It's ambidextrous, too--whether you control it with your right or left hand, the wireless optical mouse is shaped for comfort.

Both the keyboard and mouse work within six feet of the included receiver, even if your computer is out of sight. The pair comes with a three-year warranty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice Product.......2007-09-27

The keyboard and mice are really comfortable, but when you use ctrl+c or ctrl+v for copying and pasting, you will find it's not working unless you hit c or v very hard. And it takes time to get used to the layout of home/end/pageup/pagedown.

4 out of 5 stars Nice feel, mouse has bad range.......2007-09-11

I really like the feel of the keyboard. The whole thing was easy to setup and start using. However, even if the mouse is 6 inches from the receiver, I still have problems with the cursor jumping around. Then I get messages that "the signal is bad, do I want to troubleshoot." So I troubleshoot and it tells me things like, "turn the receiver upside down." Why didn't I think of that? It worked better for a while, but then started having the same problems. Overall, I can deal with the occasional loss of signal. It is only suppose to have a 6ft range to begin with. Not quite as good as some logitech bluetooth wireless devices, but I wanted a split keyboard.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product!.......2007-09-10

This keyboard was the best purchase made this summer! I recommend this to anyone who types and constantly wonders why there are so many mistakes, or have wrist/finger/elbow pain at the end of the day. Wonderful item which I would recommend over and over again. Run, don't walk and get this before you wonder another day why your hands hurt.

2 out of 5 stars Still gets lost sometimes.......2007-08-26

Maybe its my office, but the wireless stuff seems to "Hick-up" a lot in my office. Sometimes clicks and keystrokes get lost. Sliding the keyboard arround or moving the mouse and trying again normally solves the problem, but it is a pain. I know I have a LOT of wireless stuff in my office, so there is a lot of interference, but I am contemplating going back to wired.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Mac.......2007-07-24

I am an avid Macintosh user and needed an ergonomic keyboard. The Logitech keyboard does not even claim to support Mac so I thought I'd give the MS one a try. To my surprise, even all of the hot keys are perfectly integrated and easily configurable in a real control panel app. I'm not a big fan of MS software, but their hardware tends to be top notch and this is no exception.

Minor complaint would be that you can no raise support the keyboard in the front, but have to do it in the back. This has been the case since the ancient late 90's models, which I preferred.

5 out of 5 stars Most comfortable keyboard.......2007-09-22

2 out of 5 stars Go with a wireless Keyboard and Mouse from Logitech Instead.......2007-09-07

I have a fetish for Wireless Keyboards and Mice. I buy a new one every 3-4 months as new versions are released in the hopes of finding a better solution. I have never found the perfect combination.

Before purchasing this setup, I was using a Microsoft Keyboard with a Logitech MX1000 laser mouse. I loved the combo but the mouse stopped functioning.

I purchased this setup about 2 months ago. This is the second time I have owned the Microsoft Bluetooth setup. The first one was about 2 years ago and was the standard unit. Decided to go with the elite in the hope that the flaws in the original were resolved. I am sad to say they are not.

Let's start with the good.

1. The unit has great range for short term use. I can use it 10-12 feet away from the desk.
2. Nice large keyboard. The keyboard is definitely the positive with this kit. Great tactile feel to the keys.

Now to the bad.

1. Even though you can take the unit a long way from the receiver, it seems to mysteriously lose contact with the computer on a random basis. The problem has lessened by moving the receiver to the USB ports on my monitor but it still happens on occassion. 90% of the time, it is the keyboard but it can happen with the mouse too. Major pain.
2. Terrible delay on the keyboard when it has gone into standby...it can take 2 seconds for the keyboard to wake up. Annoying and no other keyboard I have used does this...including Microsoft's own non-bluetooth variety.
3. The mouse wheel stops functioning for no reason. Removing the mouse and reconnecting it or rebooting the machine fixes it.
4. If you need to remove and reconnect the mouse for the above reason, you must attach a mouse because the bluetooth discovery utility will not let you use the Tab key to select the mouse in the list of discovered devices. Simply bad UI.

The technology used in this package is just out of date. Microsoft needs to update it. The Logitech setups run rings around this as far as features go. They also have more reliable connectivity, less lag and a better price.

If you must have Bluetooth (not sure why you do), this is your best option. Otherwise, pick one of any of the competing Logitech devices and you will be happier.

3 out of 5 stars Keyboard eats batteries.......2007-09-06

I put lithium batteries in both the mouse and keyboard when I got them back in March 2007. I have replaced the keyboard batteries 3 times, and 0 times for the mouse!!!

Keyboard also loses connection sometimes when I'm using it. I would expect this to be a bit more consistent. My wireless keyboard from Kensington for my other PC has none of these issues.

3 out of 5 stars decent, not great keyboard and mouse.......2007-09-05

I have other blue tooth devices so like having a blue tooth keyboard and mouse to simplify. Setup is easy and keyboard and mouse are responsive. I am not a gamer, so not sure if it would be responsive enough for that. Mouse is comfortable. Build quality is not very good though, no better than keyboards at 1/2 the price. One of the angle feet broke the first week, keyboard just doesn't have a very solid feel, most Logitech devices feel like they are assembled tighter. The extra controls on the keyboard are nice, but I find I don't take advantage of them much.

4 out of 5 stars Nice - but a few issues.......2007-08-29

This is a nice Bluetooth Keyboard and mouse combo with decent range.

A couple issues. Occasionally after a reboot of the machine the keyboard an mouse needs to re-establish a link (keyboard twice in the past 2yrs, mouse about once a month.) The mouse is easy as I can use the Keyboard to navigate and then create the link again to the it. The keyboard is more of a pain as I need to connect up another keyboard to get into the PC.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Great functions but to low a range for a wireless.......2007-07-14

I purchased this set because of the funtions it offered including the comfort keyboard that was curved and not all the way broken and a very quite scroll mouse...the keyboard had lots of great functions and while I was willing to overlook the questionable zoom slider on the keyboard that looked like it could break off at any moment...for the money I spent on a wireless keyboard and mouse I could not overlook the short range of about 6-8inches from the reciever...this went back the next day...I now have a Logitech MX3200 keyboard and mouse that I purchased from Dell online for $67 that has a much better range of 6-8 feet.

2 out of 5 stars Blah.......2007-06-05

Keyboard: Great. A solid product, and I have no complaints.

Mouse: Poor. Eats batteries like mad. Not smooth or responsive at all; possibly a weak signal, however, mine was only a couple feet from the antenna. Also seems fussy when used with solid-color mousepads. Bah!

Antenna: Eh, yet another space-waster. Why can't these things be contained in a smart little dongle, instead of in a big honkin paperweight that sits on my desk and ads to my spaghetti of cords? Other keyboards do it better, why can't Microsoft?

Conclusion: I use the keyboard, which works fine for me, except that I resent the size of the antenna. As for the mouse, I THREW IT AWAY (yes, I actually did) and replaced it with a better stand-alone model. In short, if you can buy the keyboard by itself, go for it and just buy a different mouse sepatately.

1 out of 5 stars Bad for living room or far away.......2007-05-14

I placed my mac in my living room because there is another pc in my room. I decided to buy a cordless desktop to avoid wires running across the living room. I bought this for cheap at another major store. Once installed it was a hassle to setup and after that it became a pain in the arse. The main culprit is very weak signal. The mouse would jitter; the keyboard would become unresponsive. It would only work nearly well if I'm at a distance of 2 feet, at most. Do not buy this if you are unable to get this close to the receiver. This is a very poor product. I recommend the Logitech brand; it works perfectly.

4 out of 5 stars not entirely plug-and-play.......2007-05-09

What you're looking at on this page is Microsoft's latest wireless keyboard & mouse setup. You can also buy the keyboard and mouse separately; this is the keyboard and the mouse together in one pacakge.

On the one hand, I love this keyboard, designed to replace Microsoft's older model, the white ergonomic keyboard, famous for innovatively featuring a vast space between the keys corresponding to each hand. As far as I know, that keyboard is currently being phased out, and Microsoft is only offering this less dramatic version instead.

This one has a built-in, sturdy, non-detachable palm rest and the rows of keys are is curved in the ergonomic style, though not to the extent that they were in Microsoft's former incarnation. Additionally, there is now no space between the keys.

The keyboard has a solid, smooth, and very comfortable feel, but there is something you should know.

The keyboard needs software installed (they give you a disk) to run properly. If you don't install the software (for example because you don't have the disk or you don't have administrative privledges over your machine), then the keyboard won't work right.

The lower, basic keys will still all work, but none of the bells and whistles will, including the function keys. And there'll be no way to remap them to work right since Windows will simply not register any input from anything except the basic keys.

So this is something you might want to think about if you're thinking about getting this to replace your keyboard at work: unless your computer administrator allows it, you won't be able to use most of the keyboard's special features.

The mouse suffers no analogous impairment in functionality, however. In case you're interested, the "wheel" on the mouse scrolls smoothly: there is no clicking.

3 out of 5 stars Good for general use; not for me.......2007-04-12

Overall, this keyboard/mouse set works pretty well. For general computer use (surfing the web, checking email, etc), it'll serve you just fine. However, for anyone doing any gaming or image editing, this set just won't do.

The keyboard has an F-lock, which is all right, except in gaming I frequently use the F keys AND the Print Screen button. In order to do Print Screen, I have to turn off F-lock, and then hopefully remember to turn it back on. A bit of an annoyance, but not so bad by itself.

The BIG gaming problem comes when you need to hold down a key for a long period of time, for example to run. It will send the signal that you're pressing the key for a while, then stop. You then have to let off the key, and press down again to continue running. Running long distances? Get ready to mash those keys down many many times.

As far as image editing goes, the problem comes from the scroll wheel. It's rather non-responsive. Middle click is REALLY hard to do, and middle click and drag is nearly impossible.

5 out of 5 stars computer keyboard.......2007-09-27

its great security and has a lot more great features than i expected.
it was well worth it for the bargain price i got it for

1 out of 5 stars Not really wireless keyboard.......2007-09-11

Altough the pictures of the keyboard clearly show it without any wires coming from it, when it arrived it had a USB cable attached to it, the very thing a person wants to avoid if they are going for a wireless product. The seller refunded the cost of the unit but kept the S&H fee (a source of profit from the much lower actual cost to them) and would not pay for the return postage. They said we should have scrolled down to the bottom page of the web site to read the small print -- "USB wire attached". Beware of dealings with this marketer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Product But..........2007-08-23

This Product is great. Only issue is that it isn't Vista Compatible out of the box it takes some major digging on Microsoft's site to get the fingerprint reader to work

2 out of 5 stars undependable.......2007-08-13

Sometimes my fingerprint opens the computer and at other times it doesn't work at all. Overall it is very undependable. William Ray

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2007-08-10

Excellent keyboard and mouse. East to install and configure fingerprint scanner. Works every time. My Favorite Keys are easy to set up and are helpful.

Finger print reader saves time when logging in to various web sites.

5 out of 5 stars The best keyboard I've ever used!.......2007-09-20

I purchased the Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop 3000 keyboard and mouse for my home pc and fell in love with it immediately! I knew I wanted the same keyboard and mouse for work but we have Apple computers there. I assumed that the Microsoft keyboard and mouse wouldn't work very well with the Apple computer, but the box said that some of the media keys would work and it would work with iTunes. My supervisor told me to try it out. EVERYTHING works with the Apple computer! It's wonderful! My supervisor liked it so much she ordered one for herself. The comfort curve is a wonderful ergonomic feature. It's much more comfortable for me than the traditional ergonomic keyboards. I couldn't be more thrilled with a keyboard and mouse.

1 out of 5 stars Not ready for primetime.......2007-09-06

Once again, Microsoft has released a hardware product that doesn't seem to have gone through any sort of quality control. The big problem I experience with this keyboard is that some of the keys need a good pounding before they work. It may have to do with the "spill-proof" lining inside. Control, delete, and a few others require significant pressure, and even then don't work at times. I bought this to replace a coffee-damaged "Microsoft Natural Ergo Keyboard 4000," which was itself sub-standard, with keys that stick, especially the space-bar. This is the last Microsoft hardware product I will purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Wireless Desktop 3000.......2007-09-06

I can no longer type on a regular keybaord. Since the first ergonomic keyboard from Microsoft about 10 years ago. I also have the Microsfot natural ergonomic keyboard 4000. This is outstanding for for when you have to type a lot.

The 3000 is thin with the right amount of extra funtion keys for gettting you email and launchine your web browser and working your volume mute feature for the media players.

I can sit back in my chair and put the 3000 on my lap and type away. The wireless mouse has the new tilt wheel which lets you scroll left and right on large web pages and other windows like a large word document that cannot be displayed in the window because of large text.

It's been about 3 months since I purchased the 3000 and I still have the batteries (that came with the KB and mouse). Microsoft has come a long way in regaurds to battery life in their mice and keyboard. 6 months or longer is not uncommon. The SOFT feel of the half hight keys if very comforting.

3 out of 5 stars An affordable desktop set... just that........2007-05-28

I've bought many pieces of hardware from Microsoft for my PCs (couple of Natural Keyboards and several optical mice) but I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed by the quality of this set.
It looks cheap, it feels kind of bulky and I had to rearrange the wireless receiver some times for it to work correctly.
Other than that, its usability is fine... being the keyboard better than the mouse.

2 out of 5 stars extremely poor wireless signal.......2007-04-13

Currently my MS wireless mouse is sitting less than 1 foot away from the wireless receiver with a direct line of sight, and I'm getting "Low" wireless signal quality (2 bars in the IntelliPoint utility). I've tried changing the wireless channel to no avail. I live in an apartment in the city so there are other 802.11b/g signals are emanating from other residents as well as my own, so this may be contributing to the low signal quality. If I move further than several yards away the signal intermittently drops out, which makes it unusable for a home media computer setup.

As fa as the feel of the keyboard and mouse, I have no qualms.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-07-04

Completely pleased with this product, works just as described. The quick link keys on the top of it are extremely useful. I had the wired version of it before for a few years and I spilled a drink in it, so I replaced it with the wireless model. I am absolutely pleased with this purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Very good purchase for the buck.......2005-09-10

everything from shipment to my use of this product is very well. the distance you can use this is great too. the picture quality is not the absolute best but what is perfect in this world anyways? i recommend you purchase if under 45.00 dollars.

5 out of 5 stars I can't get why some people are not satisfyed.......2004-01-23

Ok, let me start by saying that like most other human beings I don't like Microsoft, but lets not allow this to prevent us from judging a product objectively.
This keyboard-mouse combo does exactly what it should do, nothing less, but a few things more.
The keyboard is excellent. Reception is perfect, and the extra multimedia keys work well and are programmable with the supplied drivers. The fact that the CAPS/NUMLOCK lights are on the receiver haven't bothered me a bit so far.
The mouse is simple yet efficient. It does what it should, a bit heavy and most be used from a shorter range than the keyboard (but still surpasses the 6-foot specification), but other than that very good.
Installation couldn't be easier, unless you're a complete newbie to computers. Battery life is good, channel switching is possible (though I didn't need it at all), and the design looks great.
The price is very cheap, what more do you need?
Very recommended.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!.......2004-01-09

The design of this keyboard is HORRENDOUS. I have many gripes.

1. THE MOST ANNOYING THING IN THE WORLD: F-lock key. I do not even use Microsoft Office/Outlook or whatever program those buttons are for. I would not WANT to use them. Every time I power up my computer, I have to press the F-lock button.

2. The function buttons are grouped in threes, and instead of F1 F2 F3 etc being on the top of each key, it is on the side. The crappy software shortcuts are printed on the top of each key. I would not mind if the keys were grouped in 4 as is normal, but with groups of 3, I find myself constantly having to look at the key to know which one it is - and I have to look at the SIDE of the key to tell!

3. NO LIGHTS. Well, there -are- lights, but they are not on the keyboard. They are on the hub. I do not understand the logic of this. Who the hell looks at the hub? I keep my hub on the desk and never look at it. This means that you cannot tell whether F-lock, scroll lock, CAPS lock, or num lock are on unless you look at the hub - and it uses some sort of code that I don't understand. There's an "A" light, a "1" light, and a "F" light, but they do not light up as expected. When I press F lock, the F button does not go on...

4. The keyboard seems to decide that, if you have been holding in a key for too long, you are done, so it shuts off. This is particularly annoying for games with WASD movement, as W will often be held in, but you have to keep pressing it every few seconds or the keyboard will turn it off.

5. Range. It says 6 feet, but it is not. It is 1 foot. I have no idea why they say 6 feet, it doesn't work that far, even with nothing in the way.

6. Insert has been moved up as a 2nd function of Print Screen, and Home/End/PgUp/PgDn are in a strange arrangement. Delete is double size. Arrow buttons have been moved down and to the left, causing absolute chaos when trying to find the arrows. I rarely look at my keyboard, and having to look to find the arrow keys slows me down.

I have no problem with the mouse, except that it is next to impossible to add/remove batteries. The slot for batteries is very tight and I actually pierced the plastic wrapping for my batteries on the edge of the hole. I tried putting the battery in every which way. It did not fit. You have to PUSH it in. There is also a problem with the scroll wheel. I can't quite figure out exactly why it's annoying, but I think it's because of the slippery grip, it makes me have to push down on the scroll wheel to move it. I'm used to just pushing it around with ease.

Conclusion: For a new/amateur computer user who uses many Microsoft products such as Office and Outlook, you are in for a treat, because this keyboard is made just for you and nobody else. If, however, you do not fall into this category, this keyboard will be useless to you. It is horrendous for gamers (especially!), touch-typists, fast typists, programmers, or people who type a lot. Or basically anyone who is comfortable with the standard keyboard layout.

On the upside, it's wireless... which is why I still use it. But for a wireless keyboard, it's CRAP. ABSOLUTE FILTH.

Another horrible idea from our friends at Microsoft.

1 out of 5 stars Bad reception........2004-01-04

I received this as a gift. I am happy I haven't spent any money on this one. It has a sleek design and it works fine if you are within 1 feet to your computer. If you want to get a little far, it becomes useless. What is the point of having it wireless if you have to stay next to your computer.Really bad reception. I am trying to watch a movie couple feet away from my computer and I cannot use the keyboard or mouse to control. I tried everything. I took the communication part as close as I could, still I had to bring the keyboard almost next to it. I used brand new batteries hoping that was the problem, but unfortunately it was the useless microsoft product.

5 out of 5 stars Does the job at a bargin price.......2005-10-08

We have three computers in our home. Two are logitech wireless equipped. This is our first microsoft wireless and it's connected to our Mac. We were relieved when we found it worked great on the tiger operating system. It's reliable and simple to install. No complaints, in fact we're giving them to family for holiday gifts.

4 out of 5 stars Good combo for 20 !.......2005-05-18

I had purchased this item for $20 without any mail in,

For the given price its a decent keyboard and mouse, though the performance is not good when used for games.

Overall its a good buy for the price.

5 out of 5 stars can't beat the 19.99.......2005-02-28

maybe this is not the greatest wireless keyboard/mouse, but for this price for the combo.... well i say this is pretty good.

4 out of 5 stars Microsoft Basic Wireless Optical Desk Review.......2004-05-17

This is my favorite Keyboard/Mouse combination so far. If you use Microsoft Office, media player, IE, etc., then the changed function keys are very helpful. Pressing one extra button to get to the traditional function keys (a new function key-lock button) isn't much of a trade-off for having common functions like "print" and "spell check" always having the same dedicated key.

I became accustomed to having keys for music, web browser, email, etc, on a previous wired Microsoft keyboard. This keyboard has these, too. All the functions are configurable if you don't use the default MS programs. Like all the MS keyboards, the feel of the keys is the best that is out on the market. The mouse is also top-quality.

I've found battery life to be just fine. My batteries have lasted for months now.

2 out of 5 stars Lots of issues.......2004-03-21

The entire thing is very microsoft-centric. Much of the functionality is lost on a non-msft platform, or if you are not using all microsoft applications (email, media-player, messanger, etc).
* Functions keys don't work normally. You have to press another special F-Lock key to get them to work. If you want to close a lot of windows, you can no longer hold the cntl key and hit F4-F4-F4. It's no longer that simple.
* They did away with the insert key. You can no longer do the shift-del and shift-ins to cut-and-paste.
* Eats up batteries, especially the mouse. Nothing will work correctly if the batteries get low. Once I had to pull the plug on my PC because the batteries got low, and I couldn't use my mouse or keyboard to shut it down.
* You have to be very careful about where you place your mouse and keyboard, they have to be able to make radio contact.
* It doesn't really eliminate any cables, because you have that "pod" thing.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Horrible waste of money........2007-07-12

I don't even know where to begin with this thing - eats batteries, doesn't integrate well with the OS, limited Bluetooth implmentation that prevents using any other Bluetooth devices...need I go on.

All in all, Microsoft struck out with this thing. Now, to make matter worse, an update for Vista has just knocked mine off and it appears that it may be permanent. Not willing to rebuild my computer from the groud up to get it back online.

1 out of 5 stars Nice design but too many problems.......2006-10-23

I have had this keyboard for over 6 months and am very disappointed. My first one simply stopped working. Microsoft replaced it without a fight. The second one is now having problems such as the space bar putting in two spaces instead of one. This is a real hassle when you realize how often you use the space bar. The range on the bluetooth is limited and that causes some problems. Sometime it doesn't work even though are only inches away. The mouse is has the biggest problem with distance. The keyboard seems to shut itself off if it isn't used for a few minutes. Then you type and nothing happens for about 20 keystrokes. That is anoying and time consuming. Finally, it took quite a while to get this to work with the built-in bluetooth transmitter for Dell. It works but it took hours to get it working. Who wants a bid Microsoft transmitter sticking out of your computer when you already bought a computer with it built in? The keyboard has lots of nice features but the downsides are simply too many. I will be replacing this keyboard soon with something else, even if I have to go back to a wired model.

4 out of 5 stars A solid set - the harsh reviews are not justified.......2006-08-10

Do note that appearantly two versions of this set exist, both having identical names. It seems as if the sets released before 2005 suffer from many problems which have been taken care of with all new sets (released 2005 and later).

I will be reviewing the newer set.

The keyboard feels very solid and made of high quality material (high quality plastic). Pressing the buttons feels very good.
It has a 4-directional scrollwheel on the side which I don't find very useful but it works just fine. The reception seems to be very good. The only bad thing I can say is that if you stop using the keyboard for about half-an-hour it goes into power-save mode which implies that it takes the keyboard (and mouse) about 1-2 seconds to wake up. So there will be a short delay after not using them for a while (or upon turing the computer on), but I hardly find this a problem.
I did not notice any other problem whatsoever. No lag or any other negative effects. The keyboard works just like a wired one.

The mouse is quite big. It also has a 4-directional scroll wheel. Clicking the scrollwheel requires a lot of force (relatively for a mouse) which isn't the best thing in my opinion. The placement of the back/forward buttons on the mouse is not very natural as well. The mouse does not feel as smooth as other mice I have tried, including the optical wireless (not BT) mouse I have used before. It seems as if its refresh rate is inferior. This is not affected by the range, within 15 feet of the transciever the tracking is identical (my room does not allow me to test beyond that range). You get used to this however but this is the reason I only give it 4 stars.

I can't comment on battery life since I only have this set for a week, but so far I have had no problems. Setting up this set was very easy and intuitive, took me 5 minutes at most.

The BT dongle should be able to take care of other BT devices as well. I have previously used a generic BT dongle to communicate with my Nokia phone using PC suite. Unfortunately sometimes the connection is simply lost using Microsoft's dongle, I have no idea why but it just happens (though it does work most of the time). I took care of this by returning my old dongle back (so now I am using two dongles), but obviously this is not a proper solution. This might be a local problem, however, since most of the time the connection did work fine.

Overall, the keyboard gets 10/10, the mouse gets a 7.5/10 and the dongle gets 7.5/10.

The only real comparison to this set is Logitech's diNovo which also suffers from some problems and costs at least 50% more, so if you do need a BT desktop set this may be your best solution.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad at all........2006-06-15

Anybody having trouble with this item, make sure you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed. They greatly improved BlueTooth support with SP2. I use the keyboard as my primary, and also as a travel keyboard for use with my BlueTooth-capable Dell Axim PDA. The only real complaint I have is that the mouse sleeps too quickly, and you have to fiddle to wake it up again. I would like to be able to turn off the sleep function. A tradeoff, I know, with battery life.

4 out of 5 stars Good product, but there is room for improvement.......2005-12-22

The benefits are obvious - product maker usually mentions them in their summaries/reviews. So I'll just stick to two negative aspects of this. First of all, this keyboard and mouse eat through batteries like there's no tomorrow! I use them at work and go through 4 AA batteries every month or so. Secondly, the response time between me moving the mouse and cursor moving on the screen could use improvement. There's a tiny delay, especially if you haven't touched the device in a few minutes - maybe a second or two (but still feels weird/unnatural). Also, once in a while (but very rarely) it gets stuck sending a signal to the PC and while I'm in the middle of typing a "k" it'll keep printing "kkkkkkkk..." for a while, until I hit some other key or take out the batteries.

Otherwise, this is a good product. And with an unlimited supply of batteries at work, I'm very happy with it.

4 out of 5 stars Comfortable keyboard and mouse.......2007-04-08

Work right out of box. You need install software included in order to use all features. Only thing I don't like is reciver unit connect to PC is big and must connect to both USB and keyboard input.

2 out of 5 stars Questionable quality at best.......2007-02-18

While the price was great for the product, you do get what you pay for.

Pros:

-it works :\ mostly

Cons:

Software: The software it's bundled with is mediocre. The media buttons work, but I had problems with the zooming, and especially assigning keys. It allows you to customize where certain keys took you (including webpages,) but no matter how many times I tried, it still opened Outlook when I specifically told it to open Gmail. In other words, the software SUCKS. In fact, when I formatted my computer and reinstalled everything, the only things I loaded from the included CD were the drivers, none of the software. I recommend you do the same.

Keyboard: The keyboard sucks too. It feels fine ergonomically, but it's a bit loud, and the custom keys don't work with the software (read above.) The most annoying thing though, is that the keys get stuck a lot. I'll hold the backspace key down to delete a sentence, but it keeps on going after I release the key to delete the next few words. Letter keys get stuck too, and quite frequently it misses keystrokes, so if you don't look at the screen when typing, you have to go back and type that part over again. It's really annoying.

Mouse: Maybe it's a Microsoft thing, because this is the second MS mouse I've had that doesn't track correctly on anything but blank paper. It's the weirdest thing. No mousepad works, and neither does my desktop surface. I had to use the back cardboard surface of one of the yellow paper pad things.

All in all, even for the price I don't recommend this Desktop set. It will end up driving you nuts. I ended up throwing mine away and getting a Logitech, it's much better. Trust me on this, go get a Logitech instead. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars Overall Great Product.......2006-10-02

I've had this keyboard/mouse combo since Feb 06 and I love it. I telecommute from home everyday so it gets a ton of use. I rarely have connectivity issues with the mouse as I've heard others describe. I love the features on the keyboard and I'm a huge hot key user so this has been great for me. I also love the design of the keys. As someone who has really tiny hands/fingers it has saved me from a lot of wrist and finger pain that I can get with regular keyboards. One thing to be aware of however, is if you are trying to network computers together at home, only very specific switches will work if you want to share this keyboard & mouse between computers (or any wireless combo for that matter). I purchased the MiniView 2 port USB KVM Switch GCS102U. It works like a charm.

3 out of 5 stars There's good and there's BAD!.......2006-03-21

The price was great on this duo, I got both for the price of a mouse. That should have tipped me off...
The keyboard is excellent, I've had other wireless keyboards and had all kinds of trouble, this one is fine so far. The design is OK and I like the features. The mouse is another story, it's design is a bit clumsy and it's very temperamental. The movement is fine, the scrollwheel is also OK, but the buttons only work when they feel like it! I've tried changing the wireless channel and sometimes it works, but not all the time. I sometimes have to click on something 5 or 6 times before it registers. I've found no help on their troubleshooter or support site either. Other times the mouse works great. Unless you are very patient and have alot of time on your hands I would steer clear of this duo. Buy the items separately this way you can just return one if it doesn't work properly.

4 out of 5 stars Good.......2006-03-18

I love this my only problem is battery on mouse keeps saying low battery but the battery is still good. Overall it is good for the price.
