Trashy in Every Way!.......2006-11-03

Wow! Incredible that such a cheap and useless product could every make it to market. The sound is horrible and the case construction is flimsy. When you open the case, the wires are exposed. I nearly broke the case just getting the batteries in. Luckily, for me, I purchased mine at Meijer for just $7.00 on clearance...but in my opinion, I feel I was ripped off even at this price.

Seldom do I find a product that is so bad that I only use it once. Unfortunately I bought it for an international trip and the return period was over when I got back. I offered to give it to the store to demo so that no one else would buy them. Don't waste your money.

Decent set of portable speakers.......2006-03-14

I purchased these sort-of as an impulse buy and I somewhat regret my purchase, though they do fit a certain niche.

I was surprised at the flimsy construction when opened. The double-CD design seems well suited for carrying the speakers around, but when opened, the back of the speakers and the wire connectors are exposed. I don't think they will hold up well if dropped or knocked over when in an open state. I wouldn't want to use these in a moving car, for example.

When opened all the way and set on a table-top, the sound is quite nice, and the volume is decent. Also, although I don't have mine with me right now, I'm pretty sure there is a DC-in plug for external power should you want to add it (not included).

Since I really wanted a set of single-enclosure speakers to use with my MP3 player that are highly portable, rugged enough for use in a car, and with decent sound and volume, I probably shouldn't have purchased these. They meet all the criteria except for the ruggedness, but they are decent for their intended use and I'm sure I'll use them for my laptop and for my MP3 at home.

I certainly don't think they are worth $60, but at half that price they are worth it if you know what you are getting.

Not bad, just a little overpriced........2006-01-17

Pros:
- Quite compact; as someone else said, it fits in my purse. If you are using it for your laptop it would easily fit in a laptop carrying case as well, since they usually have extra pouches.
- Durable! Despite the fact that they're made out of plastic, the overall shape makes them harder to break.
- Little energy needed. At first I was annoyed that it could be powered ONLY by batteries and not by a cord, but after using them for awhile I realized a power cord would be more than necessary. I just recently changed the batteries for these speakers, and I've had them for over a year.
- Decent sound. Considering the build you wouldn't expect much from these, but they can get pretty loud and there's very little distortion.

Cons:
- High price. Unless you are buying these used (which you probably should), $60 is a lot to ask for these.
- No place to put the cord. With such a compact design, you'd expect that there would be some convenient place to put the cord when you aren't using them.

Summary:
Great speakers for travelling and at the office; but probably not worth the price unless you are buying them used.

Good and wonderfully portable for the price.......2005-08-09

I bought these speakers so that I can easily listen to music of my own choice (ipod hook-up) at work and when traveling. This device is great because it doesn't require an external electric hook up and is so compact that I can actually fit it in my purse. The 4 AA batteries it takes actually last quite a while as well. A friend of mine has the Bose speakers and the Bose speakers' sound quality is phenomenal but this speaker quality is very good as well at less than half the price. If you are particular about very high quality sound, though, these might not be for you.

my girlfriend got these as a gift and they are great. we now use them everywhere we go. it would be nice if you could put the cable inside the speaker case....but ohh well. they aren't joking when they describe it as the size of a double-cd....it is that size! great speakers for the beach.......etc...

First impressions: The product arrived exactly on-time as expected. Kudos to the company I bought it from for that. Packaging was good, a sturdy outer box around the retail box. It got a little puzzling after that. I opened the box and found the record player inside, well packed, but exactly NOTHING else except a cryptic piece of paper lying on the turntable. No instructions at all, nothing to tell me that I had to remove a twist tie, screw down a shipping screw and remove a protective piece of plastic over the needle. Nothing to let me know how to contact the company, order replacement parts, or operate the controls. The cryptic piece of paper was hilarious, I'm sure it was written by a disgruntled employee playing a bad joke on the people who translated it in China. It made a huge point that moving the tone arm TOWARD the record turned the player off and moving it back to the rest position turned it on. Of course, just the opposite is true. The way the note is written is truly weird.

Quality of construction: Not disappointed. It is smaller than it looks in pictures, which is not a bad thing. The wood is not as glossy or high quality as the pictures make it look, but to find any product in its price range actually make of real wood these days is exceptionally rare. It is likely the most attractive "reproduction" piece of electronics I have seen. The turntable itself isn't anything I would call quality, but it's slightly above the level of what used to be sold as cheap record players in the 50s and 60s, at a price not hugely higher. The only thing that draws attention to its cheapness is the actual needle, I guess they say it's a "diamond", but it's seems to be glued to a tacky red piece of plastic. Yuck. I will probably buff and polish the wood case and it will probably look decent. I am so glad that they didn't make it out of fake wood-grain plastic.

Quality of sound: The moment of truth ... after figuring out how to set it up, which was not a rocket science task, I put my first vinyl record on (do NOT laugh at me) a very old early Johnny Mathis LP. From the first note I could tell I was listening to a record, not a CD. Even from the Crosley's tiny (and tinny) 4" speakers, Johnny's voice sounded more warm and more real than I have heard it sound in a long time, and I have actually seen him perform in public (I TOLD you not to laugh!). Perfect for low volume listening on a Sunday morning. I did not, and will not, crank up the volume - that was never my intent in buying a record player. I would like the speakers to be a little more wide-range, and maybe if I get ambitious I will replace the speakers with some better internal ones. But for playing the golden oldies, it really does beat my $1000 Bose home theater system.

Appearance: Sitting on an antique table this thing looks like an old relic. In a year when it is dusty and getting dinged up, it will make a pretty decent décor piece. And hopefully it will still be working then and will let me play an old phono record with zero fuss and adjustments.

Value: Excellent. A true antique would be a hassle and wouldn't look much better.

Complaints: My only real complaint is that the motor that drives the turntable is noisy. Not an obnoxious sound, and nothing I can hear transmitted through the speakers, but simply a motor noise that let's you know that it's spinning. Turntable motors should be silent and even very cheap ones I have heard weren't this loud. Like I say, it's not obnoxious, and when the music is playing the sound is drowned out. Also, a LOUD pop when you turn the amplifier on. If this thing had big speakers it would probably blow them.

Price:

Purchasing: I bought it through Amazon at a price about $40 less than retail. From their ordering site it appeared I was buying directly from Crosley, who seems to have a deal with a third-party distributor who actually handles the shipping and billing. I didn't care because as I understand Amazon I am protected no matter whom the real seller is. I was impressed that I got an email immediately following my purchase acknowledging the order and giving me the UPS tracking number. It was scheduled to take a week from time of order to time of arrival and they gave me an exact, though estimated, delivery date.

General: I purchased this unit because I wanted a retro-looking phonograph to play my extensive collection of dusty old records. I wasn't after the most perfect sounding record player - I still own a very expensive turntable and could have adapted it to work with my home theater system - but then I would end up comparing the sound to today's pristine recorded media. My old records weren't meant to be played that way. What I wanted is a way to listen to an album or two on a Sunday morning while having coffee and reading the Sunday paper. Part of the attraction to me of the model I bought is that it is looks like something my grandparents would have had in their living room back in the day. The fact that it looks like it's made from highly polished wood adds to the perception of warm and cozy yesterdays. Other models Crosley makes have authentic retro looks appropriate to various eras ... this model to me looked the classiest.

Film quality prints - from digital.......2001-12-22

I use this with a 4 MP camera. The result is stunning. You cannot tell the prints were digital originals. The quality is that good. One caveat... will not work with Windows 2000 or XP. Win 98/ME only :-( Other than that, highly recommended.

Good Home Photo Quality.......2001-08-22

I think this has great photo quality. The colors aren't as bright as an inkjet but they are closer to the real thing. No ink cartridges to deal with. Much smoother appearance, no inkjet dots. The down side is the size of the photo but most of the photos I print are in 3 1/2 x 5 or 4 x 6 anyway.

This printer is not bad. It's not brilliant though just OK. Good quality pictures printed too. The price though is a bit to much. I am getting a digital camera and our printer is not very good so I will probably get a new one. This is the one we will most likely to get.

Worked well on my Optio 43WR.......2007-07-30

I attached this to my Pentax Optio 43WR. On the beach, I normally cannot use the LCD screen at all. Although it was still difficult to see, this shade did make the LCD usable on the beach as well as bright sunlight. It didn't work at all angles, but overall the results were good compared to the LCD screen without it. I would recommend being careful taking the screen on and off since the 4 sliding tabs are small. However, the design is very lightweight and relatively flat when closed, so I would expect some fragility.
