5 out of 5 stars The best FRS radios I had!!!.......2002-03-29

When I first bought these at [local store], there were [money], and it included a [money] mail in rebate! I didn't mail in the rebate, because I wanted to test them out, first. The next Friday, my Law Enforcement group had an event that required radios. I just bought these, so I bring them along, not expecting any one to bring enough for the whole group. Well, someone did, and when he saw my radio, he was shocked. First of all, he said that mines' was "top of the line", and it was expensive. I just told him that I bought it from a shopping center, Secondly, his 4 radios costed more than what it would cost me less if I bought mines' in bulk. So, he just continually commented on my radio, and he got so jealous that he was about to exchange his radios for mine, but to bad for him, the radio I bought just went out of stock. So, I still have the T289 till this day, making it 5 months today, since I bought them. The only problem is that my light doesn't work, and that is getting annoying. But, overall, I love this radio, and I am willing to sell my other pair of radios to get this. :)

4 out of 5 stars Stay in touch...the cheap way.......2001-11-09

I bought 2 of these units, with 4 more backordered. This has been a great unit for staying in contact while shopping, hiking, driving, etc. The kids love it, and the belt attachment makes it easy to hook on a handbag strap, belt, etc.
The difficulty I have with it is with the VOX mode. You have to make a sound before it activates. If you don't, you lose the first few words before it kicks in.
I have the nicad, rechargeable unit. I like it because it saves on battery purchases.
All in all, I would recommend this unit.

5 out of 5 stars Slim and sleek.......2001-08-25

I love these little radios. We tested them in the car (one stayed in a wooded park while the other drove around town). Estimated 3 miles before we hit even the smallest amount of static. The only thing I would recommend is a handsfree headset so you can ride bikes, etc without having to hold anything. I read the other reviews before buying mine and they had a great influence. All are true except the pesky annoyance everyone talks about with the "push to talk" button. I personally can't find anything wrong with it. I just hold it differently. The microphone where you talk into is NOT located directly below the button, but off to the side, almost on the edge of the radio. The only weight of these little buggers is from the three AA. Basically, put three AA batteries in your hand and that is a simulation of what these radios feel like. I can't wait to try them skiing and hiking. We have played like kids on them for over a week now and haven't gotten tired of them. I would buy them all over again if I had to. Definately worth buying- don't look any where else (believe me I looked and looked)

4 out of 5 stars Great for skiing and more.......2001-06-05

I mainly use these on the ski slope, where they have been a blessing. No longer do you have to coordinate times and meeting locations with other people. The reception is pretty good, though it varies widely depending on the terrain and weather. At large ski resorts I have been able to clearly talk to other people on completely different peaks. Not surprisingly, when someone goes behind a ridge reception drops to almost nothing. Also, the small size of the radios allows them to fit comfortably in a jacket pocket.

Personally, I don't think rechargeable batteries are necessary. I usually get almost an entire ski season out of one sec of batteries per radio so I don't think recharegeables are worth the extra money/hassle.

The only problem I've come across is the usability of some of the buttons. When you are wearning large ski gloves, the "Talk" button is the only one you can easily operate. All of the other buttons usually require the removal of a gloval. Luckily, you rarely need to touch the other buttons once the radio is on and everything is set.

4 out of 5 stars Great little radios.......2001-02-22

I've just bought two of these radios and find them just great. I use them in the badlands area of Alberta, hiking and rafting. They are very clear under the 2 miles. I really like the battery pack, it lasts the whole day on standbye, can get about a dozen or so calls out of it. The only thing I don't like is they don't seem very sturdy. I think if one was dropped it would break easily so I deducted a star for this.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome.......2000-12-15

I use these radios in an all weather field environment and they have proven to be extremely reliable. I have maintained clear communications with others at almost 1 mile in broken hilly terrain and over 2 mile in open flat terrain.

The only drawbacks I see for military operations is the constant blinking red light, which can be reduced with duct tape, and the constant exposure to rain which could damage the radio. Otherwise they have been provided nothing but Convenience and reliability.

I strongely recommend this radio.

TalkAbout radios are ideal communications tools for families and friends who want to stay in touch while roaming the mall, hitting the ski slopes, hiking, camping or just enjoying the great outdoors. Hassle-free and low-maintenance, the TalkAbout radios do not require any licensing or service fees because they operate on the Family Radio Service, a short-distance two-way personal radio service developed to provide a band of frequencies for families and recreational use. Battery-operated TalkAbout radios enable families to connect readily around the neighborhood, at the park or during that weekend bike ride with the kids. At the touch of a button, the TalkAbout radios offer instant, virtually crystal-clear two-way group communication with a range of over three kilometers, depending on terrain and conditions. These compact two-way radios are small enough to fit into the palm of the hand and are just the right size for a shirt pocket or small purse. The smallest and lightest radio in the FRS family, the T289 two-way radio weighs in at just 171 grams (6.05 ounces) with batteries and is a mere 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) high with antenna. The T289 two-way radio operates on either three AA alkaline or rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride batteries and has hands-free capability. Other great features include five additional call tones for a total of 10 user selectable tones, channel-busy indicator, audible low battery alert and call alert.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2001-08-07

The range over water is astounding! I have used this radio to talk to friends at a marina over 3 miles distant.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Little Radio!.......2001-04-07

Our T289s arrived from Amazon the day before we were to use them at a weekend trade show at the Santa Clara Convention Center. It ony took me part of one afternoon to learn all of the basics, and the rest of the weekend was 'learn-by-doing', with the help of the incredibly simple instruction manual. We caravaned down in two vehicles with a radio in each, and were able to find parking near one another, which expedited our move-in. Once we got into the event center, we saw -dozens- of this make and model of radio being used by the other conventioneers. During sales lulls, I occasionally played with the scan feature and in fact, during one of those passes, happened to hear a couple of friends of mine that I'd been hoping were there!

(The one small drawback over the weekend was that it was the last weekend in March of 2001, and if you remember, there was a tremendous solar storm -- this made the range of the radio somewhat limited, but did not hamper the sound quality nor the ease of use. However, since then, we have had no problems with establishing a long range between radios or finding a quiet frequency, even with the tremendous subspace chatter that is always present in the SF Bay Area. )

The T289 has already become a very neccesary part of our shopping expiditions, as it has streamlined the process of being able to keep up with one another without having to adjust to each other's walking speed and / or shopping habits!

And yes, they are the COOLEST-looking gadgets around.

If you're going to invest in two-way FRS, go ahead and get the Talkabout 289. It's got all the features you will ever need, and it's a very reliable little contraption. Heartily recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Really glad I went with the Motorolas...............2001-03-22

We were in the market for a pair of FRS radios and I had two slight reservations about the Motorolas:

1. I thought the price was a little bit high compared to some of the other brands.

2. I wasn't really sure how I would like the "Push To Talk" button being in the front center of the radio.

I'm really glad I decided to go for the 289's because they are VERY cool radios. The PTT button is not a problem at all. These things are so small you can reach the button easily with your thumb(or any other finger) with the radio in almost any position. As for the price, I think the Motorola 289's are built very well and are probably worth the extra(if any) you have to give for them.

I didn't think the radios worked all that great at first because they were not real clear. That was only because they were too close together. As soon as we got the radios separated they were just awesome. Loud and clear for almost two miles with me in the car and my wife in the house.

We've only had the radios for a short time but I don't know what I ever did without them. Used them last night to install a satellite dish on the roof.

The only thing I didn't have much luck using was the scan feature. I had them set to scan two channels and it would never see any transmissions on the second channel. I think it's probably only because I need to read the book and figure out exactly how to set them up. There are lots and lots of features on these babies. Some of the features I will probably use all the time, some I will try once and never use again.

Have to just say that I would highly reccomend these to anyone in the market for FRS radios. They work GREAT and they are the coolest looking(IMHO) radios on the market.

5 out of 5 stars What a great FRS!.......2001-01-26

I finally found the best FRS for under [$]! The quality on these units are the best. Best reception, best transmission range, best looking...& so on.

I tried out both the 289 & the 250. Both very exceptional FRS. I really did like the 250, but since it did not have a channel lock, & call button, & was a bit bigger than the 289. About the 250 though, one of my daughters did drop that FRS & it survived! No lose of communication, or anything. Pretty tough little FRS. I hope the 289 can take drops just as well. I am returning it b/c the 289 has the features I am looking for.

My family & I went to Disneyland today, so it was a great testing ground for these FRS. I noticed many people w/ FRS at the park. But only a few times did I get somebody not in my group on the same channel. Only lost reception when my wife was in an inside attraction, ie-Indiana Jones ride. For the most part, outside reception was best. We were able to communicate even if we were in different stores in the park, where there is not much radio signals. I really like that the 289 has 14 channels & 32 sub channels. Also it has a built-in VOX feature. I did not try this out at Disneyland, due to the fact that it is pretty loud there & it will activate the VOX feature. I was able to clip it on my Backpack, using a Body Glove cover & strap. So it was close to hear incoming calls from my wife. Weight was never an issue. They are pretty light, seems pretty durable also.

Only gripe I have is when I had the 289 inside a Body Glove carry case. I like the Body Glove b/c it protected the 289 to a point, & kept it clean. Only real gripe is the clear plastic by the buttons. The clear plastic is a bit stiff, so most of the time, I had to really push the buttons to make it work. A bit of a drag, but since I set the channel & volume, I really do not have to mess w/ the settings. I only messed around w/ the settings to test them out. ...

5 out of 5 stars Incredibly useful, versatile devices.......2001-01-08

It is great to have a good, reliable two-way communications tool. Compared to the walkie-talkies of my youth, these work! Our family bought a set of three so that we could stay in touch with each other while hiking, skiing, or heading out on sight-seeing trips while travelling. They have been indispensable in allowing us to keep track of each other. The reception is remarkably clear and you do get remarkable range - probably close to the 2-mile specs - although we found that large mountains in between users may reduce that distance.

We shopped similar devices before buying these. The Motorola units are nice because they are very durable, about as small as anything, and have the extensability (earbuds, etc) to be flexible as personal communications devices. Plus, it is easy to change your channel/subcode frequency if someone else suddenly hops onto your frequency. All of this generation of walkie-talkies share a common set of frequencies so these Motorola units can work with other manufacturers. This is a positive if you lose one and have to replace it with another unit while travelling; if you don't have a choice of manufacturers, it's nice to know that any of them will work.

4 out of 5 stars Using AA NiMH with this AA Alkaline battery kit ... part II.......2001-03-15

Just came back from Birch Run, Michigan (the real-life test site of my pair of TA280s AA model).

Some 150 outlet stores scattered around the whole block. To go from one section to another, driving is often required. A pretty ideal place to use FRSs, especially your spouse/kids have very different preferences of stores to visit.

I fully-charged a set of Maha 1550mAh NiMH AA batteries for each unit and started them off at around 10:00am. With frequent conversation, it lasted thru the day until I turned them off at around 10:00pm with 1 bar (out of 3) left at the battery indicator.

I don't know the capacity of the proprietary Motorola NiMH battery for TA28x but Motorola claims 11 hours of 'normal' usage (5%/5%/90%). My 1550mAh NiMH AA setup beats this handily. Also, just imagine how much $$$ you are going to save from those disposable alkalines.

I am quite pleased about the performance of my batteries as well as the FRSs so far. Highly recommended.

I just finished the my own drain test with 3 x Maha 1550mAh AA NiMH batteries in TalkAbout TA280. The results are quite interesting.

TB is smart enough to tell it is being powered by original Motorola proprietary NiMH rechargeable (3.6V, have 3 contact points) or Alkaline AA adaptor kit (4.5V, have only 2 contact points).

I put 3 FULLY-CHARGED 1.2V NiMH into the Alkaline AA adaptor and started up the FRSs. The battery indicator showed only 2 (out of 3) bars. It was working without strange behavior though. I left them on and it ran out of power 30 hours later !! The battery indicator stayed at 2 for more than 18 hours and dropped to 1 for the rest. I used it occasionally (just to see it was still alive).

I think when you install the AA Alkaline battery kit, the TB is expecting 4.5V (= 3 x 1.5V). However, 3 x AA NiMH 1.2V batteries yielded only 3.6V ( < 4.5V) and this attributes to the 2 (out of 3). On the other hand, AA NiMH can deliver stable 1.2V for 80% of the discharge cycle which attributes the 'long-standing' 2 and 1. Whereas Alkaline poses a steeper discharge curve than NiMH.

I will try them again to test how the 'real-life' performance (duration, range) will look like using NiMH in Alkaline adaptor.

5 out of 5 stars Good Customer Service.......2007-06-28

Received the product as promised. Setup of Samsung ML 2251N printer was tedious with Windows XP. Setup was quick with Windows Vista Premium. Other than the Setup Printer works great.

1 out of 5 stars Damaged printer and no customer service.......2007-01-21

On the 26th of Dec. I opened the shipping package and discovered the back of the printer bashed in and the toner cartridge and the toner cartridge packaging broken allowing toner to go everywhere. I immediately emailed for a RMA and a refund. On Dec 28 I got an email stating I would get a full refund in 10 business days. Its now 15 business day and nothing has happened. The purchase was from one of Amazon's independent sellers so apparently amazon really isn't interested in providing customer service. I found the customer service link on one of Amazon's pages. I sent a message to Amazon, but could not REPLY to Amazon's non-responsive response as it is set up as a one way message rather than for a two way communication 1/20/2007.

5 out of 5 stars Very good printer for the price.......2007-01-17

I have been using this printer for about three months now, and am very pleased with it. Having the printer on the network, rather than shared from a single computer, is very convenient. I am using the printer with a network of two Windows XP computers, and one Linux (Ubuntu) printer. Set up with the Linux system took a bit more time and research, but on the Samsung web site there is a Linux driver available for download. The printer has a nice browser based utility for adjusting settings, including setting up a fixed IP address, but I had to find this on my own; I found no mention of it in the manual.

Print quality has been excellent. I use the toner saver mode for most of my printing, and save the higher quality mode for only the most important documents. The driver has the ability to save various printing profiles, so once you have settings for paper size, resolution, graphics modes and the rest that you like, you can save it for later use. This might be common with other printers, but not with the ones (old) that I have been using.

Just for a test, I did attempt to print a black and white photo on glossy paper. Although the detail was acceptable, the printer introduced bands of light and dark into the print. Since I knew this was not a photo printer when I bought it (and that is not what I bought it for) I don't consider this a problem.

If I had any complaint, it would be the noise level when the printer is waiting to print, but hasn't gone into the sleep mode. Since this lasts only ten minutes, it isn't a huge problem. I also have a separate room for the computer. If your computer is in your living room, you might want to consider making good use of the networking capability to move the printer to another room, away from people who might be bothered by the noise when you are printing.

At the time I purchased this unit, it was under $220 from Amazon, and even with free super saver shipping still arrived in three days. This was my first order from Amazon, and am quite pleased with the service.

Works as advertised. Network connection went flawlessly. Print quality is great. Runs with my Apple systems and Windows systems. A great deal considering the price.

5 out of 5 stars Great Printer.......2006-03-16

I unpacked and installed the printer in under 30 minutes. I also added the printer to my two wireless laptops in about 5 minutes each. Great print quality.
