Nexicam for IPaq's.......2002-12-04

The NexiCam was a great solution to my digital camera problems since it worked directly with my Pocket PC... previously my old digital camera used a different type of memory than my IPaq Pocket PC, so transferring images between camera, PC and Pocket PC was alot more timely than I wanted.
The NexiCam works great, has more features than my old Kodak digicam, is very simple to setup and I am happy to be rid of the old memory cards. I love the built in Compact Flash memory slot, zoom feature and configurable self-timer.
One major downside I found was lack of good user documentation. The manual is Adobe based and very basic, you really need to experiment on your own to see the full potential of what you can do with the NexiCam (although that is alot of fun too!)

After a brief analisys what you get is the following:
- an IPAQ sleeve form factor expansion. (This feature is a pro and a limitation at the same time because while combining perfectly with iPAQ devices, will not be compatible with other PocketPCs.
- an 800 by 600 CMOS sensor embedded in the plastic case
- a single unpowered Compact Flash expansion slot
- the PocketPC software driver to make the camera work with your device

The Flash
An additional unfortunate feature is the lack of flash. The camera is virtually useless at night or in dark environments. The actual compact design could have included a built in flash like the those on the single use 35mm film cameras or, even better, a small detachable flash module powered by AA or AAA batteries, attach to the unit when needed.

The Zoom
The fact that such feature is present should make the camera more enjoyable. Unfortunatly Nexian made another bad choice: The lack of optical zoom. I am not talking about a Carl Zeiss, a Nikkor or an high quality grade lens, but just by providing the camera with a decent lens having a short range zooming capablity would have been probably a much better choice than the digital zoom, which actually reduces the quality of the images captured making them grainy, jagged and/or blurry beyond acceptable levels. A simple, manually adjustable mini zoom lens would allow the nexicam to produce higher quality close-up shots. The current low quality of the images created by the digital zoom will make it a feature you will try to avoid as much as possible.

The Auto Focus
In a device like this make to get picture on the move this feature is a must, the nexicam auto focus feature unfortunately is slow and often will require you to stay still for a few seconds while the device is adjusting exposure and focus, you will be able to see the image appear on the viewfinder while the device performs such adjustment process. This will happen especially when passing from highly illuminated areas to dark ones.

Using FY100 with XP Service Pack 2 .......2005-10-12

Pros: Sturdy design plus FM radio.
Cons: Cannot transfer files without MPIO SW installed.

I expected the fy100 to be an expandable MP3 player and use it as a data storage device. Fact is, you need to install the mpio manager before you can transfer any files. The first time I installed the SW,
I encountered problems with doing "anything" with the player itself. I could not transfer nor delete files, and was forced to just do a format (also done within the SW) And so I looked into the mpio website and downladed a patch for SP2. After that everything worked nicely.

Note: FY100 will not be seen in "My Computer" as it is not seen by XP as a USB Storage device but as a Digital Audio Player. Real drawback as I really wanted it to work on any machine. Also, the SMART MEDIA expansion slot should have been for an MMC or SD card instead.

If you were like me, you saw a 128MB player for $50, and figured, "Hey, I'll get it instead of something pricey."

That would be a big mistake.

From the moment I started using this thing, it froze up during play. Then it quit working after 60 days or so. I sent it back for warrantied repairs. I got it back, and, suddenly, the player would not hold more than 9MB of songs.

I have tried customer service numerous times. They are not English-speakers by nature, and they do not understand you or the product manual. Also, they informed me that this model was dropped from production back in August 2004. So if something goes wrong with yours (look at the reviews, it'll happen), then you won't be getting a replacement.

Overall, a piece of junk not even worth $50. Get anything else - the product and customer service CANNOT be any worse.

Could be a good product if better made.......2004-11-19

I received this product a few months back and it was un-useable the day after I got it. [...] I got the new one and was able to use it for a couple of months before the sound went out. I did get it with the $50 rebate and really didn't want to go through an RMA.
So, being the tinkerer that I was, I opened up the player to see what was wrong. The headphone jack was not connected in a secure way and two of the three contact points had become disconnected. I'm still working on repairing this myself because I enjoy doing stuff like that.
Bottom line, if they spent a little more on better components and designed it a little better, it would be an awsome product. Right now, it barely passes for half-way decent. All the features in the world won't help a defective design.

WORST customer service EVER !!!!!.......2004-07-17

I tried two of these units.... same problems with both, must therefore assume it is poor design..... MP3 xfer Software frequently locks up..... FM tuner locks up..... and the absolute worst TECH. SUPPORT from the Manufacturer I have ever encounter !!!! called 6 times with NO connection (on hold for over an hour), left messages with NO response, emailed and faxed problems with NO response..... Suggest that NO one EVER buy any product from this manufacturer unless you want to be completely ignored.
Final insult to the unsuspecting comsumer is that several features of this unit advertised on the manufacturer's website (voice recorder, backlight lcd, can't use as a USB storage device without having software installed on all computers invovled in file xfer) and this unit seems to not be supported on website...... no firmware or software updates that desperately seem to be needed. Don't get suckered by the low price..... you get what you pay for .... this company should be ashamed to be in business !!!!

Sleek laptop, standard features, well build.......2006-03-12

I have this laptop for four months. The only complain is it has a dull screen. Other than that it works perfectly. My last laptop is Compaq EVO with p4 processor. The biggest difference I noticed right away is it produce much lesser heat than my previous notebook. Also, the fan of the nc8230 runs quietly. The hand rest area of this laptop is the best I've ever seen. It is laminated and smooth. I work with laptops quite often but I couldnt find another laptop like this. The keyboard is excellence compare to my old compaq. I feel like i am using a IBM whenever I type on it. The LCD cover is made by Magnesium alloy to protect the LCD and reduce the electronic interference. It has only 3 usb ports. It would be better if they can add more ports on it.

Look elsewhere!.......2003-12-04

I purchased this laser level online, partly due to it's good price and to use around the house..

After receiving it, opening the package and trying it out, I was more than disappointed.. although everything functioned, the laser was crooked, coming out of the level on quite an angle - the dot was off by 1/2" at a distance of only one foot!

Of course, according to the etailers return policy, since the package has been opened and is not in 'original condition' I can't even return it!

My advice is, forget it. This is a very poorly made product with no attention paid to it's alignment. The components are just glued inside the casing! (since I couldn't return it, I opened it up) You might get lucky and have one with straight parts, but more likely not.

Quality Control is Poor!.......2003-01-05

I purchased this item in hopes of using the dot or line laser for some handyman work I have to do. Upon receipt I encountered problems with getting the laser to work. After trying two different pairs of tested triple AAA batteries I gave up. Another problem I encountered was the batteries did not come out of the level very easy. I had to use needle nose pliers to remove them as well as tap the level rather vigorously to get the batteries to even move. Rather odd as this is a fragile electronic device based on the product literature. I have never encountered this before. It should have been a simple unscrew the battery cap and turn the level face down and bingo, the batteries drop out. My recommendation is to spend the additional dollars and get a professional quality laser level. As a bubble level it is fine. As a laser level it is of poor quality. What good is it if it doesn't work. Also, if I have to fight with the product to remove the batteries it is not of very good quality! I say, stay away from purchasing this item. I plan on purchasing a name brand, working, quality tested laser level. I don't want to have to go through this frustration again.

I borrowed one from a friend to set a line around a addition in preparation for siding. In a 35' run I was off 7/8. The laser was fine, the level bubble was off! Wasted an hour trying to figure out what was going on. This tool is good for

This is One Cool Tool!.......2001-06-07

I closed my eyes, I held my nose, I ordered it up. I truely expected a piece of junk from China that I would return upon unboxing. For comparison I consider Sears Craftsman tools "barely acceptable" and use Stanley tools as my minimum standard of quality. I was very pleasently surprised to find that this was a fairly well constructed tool for the price. Not up to professional standard, but very good for occasional use (which is all I need it for). It is a really cool tool to own, although I really don't pull it out of the toolbox very often, so it's mostly a "toy". The advantage of this tool for me is not any remarkable accuracy (for it is possible to use this tool to make 100% incorrect measurements - with percision) but to be able to project a line without having someone to hold a tape or help pull a line taught. It is bright enough to project a DOT even in daylight, although it will wash out in bright sunlight. When it is projecting a LINE, it can only be seen indoors or at night. Compared to other tools of this type in this price range, it is a very good value.

A good tool for non-critical application, good value.......2000-12-05

Before I bought this product, I had a lot of questions that wasn't available on the editorial review. So here they are: The level uses 2 - AAA cells that last over 10 hours. The tolerance claimed on the instruction is 0.2" in 30 feet. The level projects a bright dot or a less bright horizontal line. At 50 feet indoor, the dot is still very bright (slightly fuzzy), but the projected line is bearly visible. So I would limit the use of the line to maybe 25 to 30 feet maximum.

The finish of the level is good with milled rails on the bottom. There are printed inch and mm scales on the side of the level. The laser unit seems to be well mounted inside the level. The leveling bubble seems to be in good quality. There is a tripot socket on the bottom that looks quite flimsy.

The overall quality of the product and finish is good for the home user. But it is not up to the quality of other more expansive (costing 4x or more) professional laser level. Overall, it is a good product for home users that wants a laser level but do not want to pay the high price. Would make a good gift for the handyperson.
