This drive does all that I expected it to do with 100% satisfaction. Unforntately it did not come with editing software. For buring DVD's it is awesome. Just don't expect any extras.

I have used this a few times for simple backing up purposes and they work great. Not the high-end, super fast drive, but very good for the price.

Good Recorder/Average Software.......2004-12-27
I bought this recorder three weeks ago and it works well. A previous reviewer complained about the tray being too wide. I ran into that problem on my Dell. I had to make sure the recorder was pushed all the way to the front of my computer so I could move the flexible frame of the computer a little to allow the tray to open. It worked and opens and closes, however Pioneer should have seen this coming and designed better. The player recorder works just fine, but the software makes me mad. You will likely have to buy new software and I feel cheated by Pioneer and Ulead for including software that is only lacking in handling Dolby. If you have a recording with Dolby audio the software will not handle the audio. Why do they do that? If I buy new software it definitely won't be Ulead because I feel cheated by them. All my recordings on my TV settop DVD recorder are in Dolby so how am I supposed to edit, etc. DVD's recorded on my settop DVD recorder?

A Complete Nightmare!!.......2005-11-07
This DVD writer was a complete nightmare for me. I purchased it before a vacation and installed it when I returned. I realized it was not working properly, but it was past the return period. Basically, the DVD writer can read and write to CDs, read DVDs, but can't write to ANY DVD media of any brand or any speed rating (Verbatim, TDK, Memorex, Ritek, 8x, 16x, +/-, etc)! When I called Pioneer, they told me that I NEED TO PAY FOR THE SHIPPING COST to get this back to them. After two weeks, I called to follow up and NO ONE can even find it at the factory! But somehow, it was returned to me as "repaired" almost 2 months later!! To top all this off, it has the exact same problem as before, causing me to wast 3 more disks on top of the 8 I already wasted! Now I'd have to send it back AGAIN! This is definitely the worst customer service I have ever encountered from any electronic manufacturer.
Since I can't do without a DVD writer for four months, I decided to purchase the NEC ND-3540A. What a relief!!! It reads and writes to EVERYTHING I can throw at it, at a high speed. I will never buy another Pioneer product again, and I urge you to avoid the nightmare that I can't seem to get out of!!! I am not the only guy here. Read the reviews on CNET and others. The bad customer service and very poor quality control is widely reported for this DVD writer.
Problem with installation........2005-09-22
Couldn't get my system to recognize the drive via plug n play. Pioneer does not have phone tech support. Have had the drive in computer for weeks and haven't been able to use it, I'm probably going to have to pay someone to set it up. I've owned PC computers since 1986. I've installed cd drives a half dozen times over the years and this is first time I've run into a problem.

I have read on that some users have experienced difficulty installing this drive because the drive door is too wide, being the same width as the drive. It is almost as wide and, if your system housing front overlaps where the unit "sticks" out this could be a problem. Many units that I have seem don't but you should be aware of this. From my perspective the unit was easy to install and has worked just fine, even on some of my scratched DVDs. Its relatively fast,although not the fastest, in writing but I'm most interested in error correction which it seems to handle fine. I'd like to see what its realiability is a year from now with all the plastic parts but for now it is great. I bought the retail version and the software that came with it was so-so and conflicted with other software on my machine so I am using the Nero software instead which works great. Because of this I would recommend the "bare" version of the product.

What a headache!.......2005-09-01
I bought this unit for a new build and was thoroughly disappointed. Upon attempting to load my OS for the first time, the disc was not recognized. I loaded my OS through another drive and had no problems. After getting the system up and running, this drive was very selective about the discs it read. It would not even read the software CD that came bundled with the unit. My biggest complaint is really about Pioneer's customer service. After countless calls troubleshooting with them, they tried to tell me the rest of my hardware was defective. This is simply not the case seeing as the system works fine without this drive. After a great amount of debate with Pioneer and their insistance that I incorrectly installed the firmware update, they have been generous enough to offer to look at it if I pay shipping! I expect to come across a defective unit now and then, but I'm appalled at the quality of the customer service.
Great Drive!.......2005-03-18
I have had the drive for one month and it is a good drive. Here is some advice that may help you with the drive.
Go to the Pioneer main site and download the firmware update. Make sure you read the instructions prior to the download.
Here is some very helpful advice for those who dont know how to back up their DVD's that they have bought.
1. Go to www.doom9.org and download DVD decrypter and DVD Shrink
. These are both free downloads and great programs that you can make copies of DVD's with.
2. Go to www.allmediaoutlet.com and purchase Ritek dvd's, these are a real good brand and only cost 21.50 for 50. It is a great site for purchasing all your media needs.
3. Look up www.generetic.org and join for $12.00 per year to make DVD covers. Read instructions from this site and it will tell you how to download the pictures using another program.
4. Make sure you only make copies of things that you legally bought. The fine is huge if you get caught doing this illegally.

I've had the unit for 15 months and it work flawlessly, making numerous copies, burning new disc etc. but wouldn't you guess, it died after the warranty expired. I don't know if I would buy another one.
Pioneer DVR-R100B.......2006-03-09
This unit was very easy to install in the Dell Dimension 4300 with no interferance. I tried the player out and it played a CD that my son had scratch so bad that the CD will not play in any other player. I plan on buying another to replace the DVD-CD burner in my Dell Dimension 8300. Pioneer has made a believer out of me. Thank Pioneer.
Aggressive Software.......2006-02-27
The DVD drive works fine. I used it without problems for recording on DVD-R media. But the software provided with this drive is a real bummer. It is one of those software bundles that replaces all your current defaults and existing programs. You expect to use the vendor's supplied software and drivers, but the supplied software replaces your existing defaults for viewing images, viewing videos, etc. It was a real pain removing all the extraneous software and returning my settings to what they were before I install the package.
I'd recommend looking for a DVD recorder that has more common and less intrusive software support.

The dvd works great on +R dvd DL but not at all on -R DVDs. Their fix doesn't work and support is spotty and so far not helpful.

Pioneer in my view make the best DVD writers, rock solid performance, reliable drives and firmware update support. They also package ULEAD DVD software great if you are converting your Digital Camcorder Mini-DV movies to DVD.
I have a Panasonic PV-DV953 and ULEAD is the best home authoring software (create chapter menus, buttons, music, graphics, titling) and it comes free with this!
The DVD burner is a solid burner (...). Recommend you use RITEK G04 DVD-R or higher media (purple back). CD-R performance is also rock solid. Nero is the standard for burning ISO CD's.

WOW!.......2004-09-16
Wow because I went from a 1x DVD-R to a 16x DVD-+R. So far so great. Love this burner. I've only burned one dvd+r DL (double/dual layer) disk. It worked PERFECTLY! I've also burned a 8x verbatim dvd+r at 12x. Oh and one other thing, i attached it to an external drive bay, worked perfectly (i don't have any more room in my computer).

A little bit of a problem child........2006-02-25
I bought two of these and I've had a little problem getting one to get it to work. It seems it doesn't work with the other CD ROM on the same cable. I tried various jumper settings but in the end I had to remove the other CD ROM drive. The other computer with the DVR-R100 also is on a cable by itself but there wasn't a CD ROM in that computer to start with.
Also they don't provide a keycode for "PestPatrol" which means it cannot be installed until you get a response from Pioneer support which took a few days to get.
Once I got them working they work well.

Nice and black.......2006-08-16
I bought this burner In July 2005. Has worked great, fitted perfectly in my ATX case. I've used it to burn delicate info and has never failed when used with relatively high quality media. Cheaper disk tend to fail at high speeds, but it can be blamed to the disk itself, not the drive.
To my understanding, it has standar dimensions. I'm comparing it to my old HP Cd burner and both are the same size, both in height and width.
Before I got this burner, I bought a cheaper no-branded one, that was awfully bad. I got the Pioneer, and now I'm happy.
Good Driver, Poor Design.......2006-07-08
Who ever designed this drive doesn't know anything about computer cases. I ended up having to take a Skillsaw and cut out my computer case front, just to fit the thing in. CHECK THE SIZE FIRST, it will only fit a select few cases.
Good but quirky.......2005-09-20
I returned the first drive I ordered thinking it was defective because the drive was not recognized by the bios using Cable Select and the Slave setting. The second drive behaved the same exact way. I got it to work by setting it to Master and my IDE drive to Slave. Burnt a few disk already with no problem. It seems to tolerate inferior media much better than my Plextor drive.
Disappointment for Macintosh users.......2005-09-17
If you're a Windows user you may ignore this posting. This drive costs quite a bit more than the equivalent DVR-109 model due to the extra "features" - an impressive software package, and not least QuietDrive, which slows down drive speed for playback of CDs and DVDs. Not on Macintosh it doesn't. For a start, the entire software package is Windows-only. You cannot use it. And worse, QuietDrive is also windows-only. My DVR-A09XL sounds like a leafblower when playing audio-CDs - really disappointing. You are much better off buying the more reasonably priced DVR-109 or DVR-110/110D.

Just completed my first home movie DVD with this device and I have the following observations:
1. Very quick
2. Very simple to use
3. Software easier to get started with than Nero
4. BUT software did not work until patched twice from Pioneer's website
5. AND firmware needed updating
6. And software dates back to 2004!!!
Cheap is the impression the last few things convey combined with the fact that they include the screws for attaching to the runners but no runners for inserting it into the PC
Lastly, as others have commented, it fits barely, I had to open and close the PC five times to get it in the right bay with the right combination of plastics and the old non-burner is having to stay out

Good Recorder/Average Software.......2004-12-27
I bought this recorder three weeks ago and it works well. A previous reviewer complained about the tray being too wide. I ran into that problem on my Dell. I had to make sure the recorder was pushed all the way to the front of my computer so I could move the flexible frame of the computer a little to allow the tray to open. It worked and opens and closes, however Pioneer should have seen this coming and designed better. The player recorder works just fine, but the software makes me mad. You will likely have to buy new software and I feel cheated by Pioneer and Ulead for including software that is only lacking in handling Dolby. If you have a recording with Dolby audio the software will not handle the audio. Why do they do that? If I buy new software it definitely won't be Ulead because I feel cheated by them. All my recordings on my TV settop DVD recorder are in Dolby so how am I supposed to edit, etc. DVD's recorded on my settop DVD recorder?
Drive is great, ulead software is good but not perfect.......2004-12-16
The speed of this drive and software was much better than the other DVD burner and Intervideo software I had. pcmag.com rated this drive very good which seems to be accurate. There was a sound problem I had when playing back some recorded piano music, I reported the problem on the ulead web site and they responded in a day with the existing fixes available on the web site; however, I am still having a sound problem on certain videos. I think it is because I changed the amount of sound bits in the middle of the recording and the software cannot handle it, but software should not fail when this happens. I have now purchased Adobe Premier Elements and Photoshop Elements together instead and it was able to detect the sound bit change. The ulead software is the current release which is good at least.
DVD Tray Too Wide.......2004-12-08
I was unable to use this DVD drive and had to return it because the tray is too wide. Most DVD drives give you about a 1/2" clearence on the sides, but this tray gos compeletely to the edge. Once I put the case back on the computer, the tray could not eject. If they would redesign the tray to be more compatible with Dell PC's and others, then this would be a good drive.
Fast, Stylish Burner & Great Software.......2004-10-19
A fast 16x burner from Pioneer with a easy to use and versatile software suite included with it. I'm now a fan of Ulead's CD burning and DVD conversion/burning software. It requires little exploration to burn a DVD from nearly any video file. 16x media isn't out yet so a 4.7 GB burn takes about 7 min at 8x. The black bezel matches with my custom case too.
