The filter itself is 52mm. But it comes with a adapter ring that change
it to 58mm which can mount on the XTi's kits lens and 50mm f1.8 lens.
When it mounts to the kits lens which is 18-55mm you can not tune the
kits to 18mm, simply because 18mm is so focus short plus this .42 you get
very limit light path that only can lighten a small round area of your
10M CCD. The minimum it can go is 30mm that is 30x.42=12mm. Still not a
bad fish eye.
Wide Angle & Macro - A beginning.......2007-05-14
Received the Wide Angle & Macro Fisheye lens on time as expected. The actual lens is a fun addition to a standard lens (I've mostly used it on my standard kit lens) but quickly creates excessive curves on items towards the extremities of the picture. The macro function is very limited in its usefulness. If I decide to further pursue macro photography I will probably buy a dedicated lens. As for this lens, it is good for creating som fun effects, but nothing more.
Pretty good lenses for begginners.......2007-04-06
I was impressed with the resluts I got it using the opteka .42hd2 wide angle macro lens. I got my canon slr few weeks ago and I was able to get really nice macro and fish eye effects from my pictures using the opteka lens (attached to my 50mm lens).
Tottally worth it if you are staring to learn the world of SLR.

Basically this works by screwing onto the end of your lens like a filter. There is a conversion ring for the Cannon lens, a 58 series VII (46mm to 58mm) adapter. It does open up the wide angle aspect of the lens, but it also cuts down on the light you are getting. I think with the faster 50mm lens it gives you a really nice wide angle lens that isn't as dark.
As for the Macro aspects, not really any better than the stock lens. Also a pure wide angle or fisheye is probably better, but the price on this was right for what I wanted. Haven't shot much with it yet, but so far it looks okay.

I am enjoying my new Canon EOS Elan. I find it comfortable to hold and easy to use. I have not yet had the opportunity to try out all the features, but the few films I have exposed in auto mode and had developed satisfy my needs at this point. The rewind mechanism is VERY quiet which is nice if you plan to use the camera at a public event.

Okay, first off, I'd like to say that this is my first AF SLR--I stepped up from my dinosaur of a camera, Canon AE-1 manual focus, and right now I am quite overwhelmed by all the features in this little thing. I'm still in the learning stages of all this technology but let me tell you this, I am having fun! It amazes me that Canon can offer quite an impressive camera for the price.
I just received my first few rolls from the developer and the pictures came out amazing--so clear and the colors are very vibrant. Just to let you know, I'm using the 28-105mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens. I took the suggestions of many and passed up on the "kit" lens and I'm sure glad I did so. I would highly recommend the f/3.5-4.5 lens, but unfortunately for the rest of you, Amazon has discontinued it. But you could order it from one of the many other photo shops (B&H, Adorama, etc).
Do I have any regrets on this purchase? Absolutely not! I love this camera and even though I've owned it for less than a month, I'm actually thinking about stepping up to the EOS 3 and using this as a backpacking/hiking body. Hmm...what to do, what to do? Do I purchase another body or start a collection of L-series glass? ...that is the question.

Using this will only demonstrate to you that you'd be better off putting some money away until you can get the real thing. While it may be better than nothing, picture quality is sub-par at the edges. Used it once - never again. Have since bought the Canon EF-S 10-22mm Ultra Wide, which was significantly more costly, but light-years better.

Not what it promises to be.......2007-02-17
This macro seems to double the width of your field of view, but at a price. Your pictures are often shifty (not quite fuzzy), particularly near the edges of the field. You would think that a wider lens would deliver better sharpness, not worse.
Also, your field is much more compressed at the eges than near the middle, to the point where the image at the edge is pretty much useless. The four corner are black voids for the wider shots -- perhaps this is the edge of 180 degree vision, but the picture quality turns very bad way before 180 degrees.
If all you want is a LITTLE expansion of your field of view without getting a real new lens, this macro might be for you, but it isn't going to deliver any kind of quality.

For the money it's hard to go wrong with this lens. I have used it on my Rebel 35mm SLR and on my Canon Rebel XTi and have had good luck with both. Sure, it may not give 100% of the image quality of a $300 or $500 lens, but for the money you get a good lens and save a lot of money to put towards a nice zoom lens.

Lens is fine now that I have it...First one had to be returned, defective, and I got the return of the good one 2 weeks later, no problem on the return..Everyone cooperated fine. Recommend all highly.

Clarity and sharpness of the pictures are not that great. Yet, if you think about the price of this lens, it's not really that bad. The material used feels and looks like a toy. If you really want a good wide angle lens, I recommend Canon 10-22mm or if you want something cheaper, a Sigma 10-20mm will give you the best result.

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro Lens can be used with wide variety of subjects and it is an ideal large aperture standard zoom lens for digital SLR cameras featuring APS-C size image sensor.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of 7.9" (20cm) throughout the entire zoom range. Maximum magnification of 1:2.3 enables close-up photography like a macro lens. Results:
I have been searching for a better walk around lens for my Canon Rebel XTi since the Kit lens is just to soft and suffers from chromatic aberration.
I had been thinking about and have tested a Canon 17-40L in the store and borrowed a friends Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L at the zoo and thought they were both pretty sharp lens.
My friend recently purchased a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-F4.5 Macro DC lens and asked if I wanted to try it.
Imagine my shock when I got this lens home and it blew away not only the Canon 17-40L and Canon 24-70mm but also my Canon 70-200 2.8L in sharpness!!!
This lens is so tack sharp you had better wear gloves when you handle it!! The images were razor sharp edge to edge at all apertures.
This sharpness is great for landscapes cityscapes, macro shots etc but a little too sharp for portrait as every little blemish is shown!
And the flash problem I was having with my Rebel XTi was all kit lens. This Sigma using indoor flash just plain rocks with even lighting edge to edge using my Canon 430EX Speedlite even at 17mm and no sign of chromatic aberration I was having. Just one warning for those without external flash the lens hood will cast a shadow on the bottom of your photos if you are using the built in flash.
Another surprise was the auto focus which has to be the fastest non USM auto focus I have ever used. It won't quite keep up with my Canon 70-200 2.8L but it was close. I had my daughter run towards me with the lens at 70mm zoom from 40 feet away and got 5 good focus shots in sports mode with the Sigma and 8 good focus with the Canon.
Also note there is no way to manual focus without turning off the auto focus but you may not have to as this lens will focus every bit as good in the dark as my Canon 70-200 2.8L. Yeah the focus motor is louder but will only matter if you are shooting wild life or wedding photography.
This lens is not perfect to be that it would have to have USM auto focus weather sealing and F2.8 throughout the zoom. The apertures change as you zoom as follows:17-20mm f2.8 ; 21-24mm f3.2 ; 25-34mm f3.5 ; 35-54mm f4.0 ; 55-70mm f4.5. Would have been nice to have it be 2.8 throughout still it makes up for it in the great photos it takes.
In closing this is an excellent lens I am going to buy my own copy and put the money I saved from not buying a Canon 17-40L into something else.
This will make a great vacation zoom or walk around zoom where I only want to carry one lens.

I've been shooting it for about a week now. Quite sharp. The macro function, which really isn't a function but just getting close to a subject, works great. The only problem I have is the lens casting a shadow on the object when you get too close. You can pretty much focus with the lens touching whatever you're shooting. Wider shots seem pretty clear also, though I haven't fully tested it at 17mm and zoomed to check the sharpness. For the price, I think this is much better than living with the kit lens if that's all you're using.

Bought this lens to compliment my 70-200 2.8 VR. As many have said, "this is a great walk around lens." I think that that is exactly what it is. I recently use this lens while on our trip to Disneyland. I found it easy to use for shooting just about anything. I tend take photos of flowers as much as the family. This lens is sharp, and turned out some really nice shots. Affordable too. Very pleased!

I use the Sigma on my Canon Digital Rebel XT(350D). My standard lens is the Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens.
Pros: -Very sharp, rivaling(in my opinion), alot of Canon L series glass.
-Nice focal length range. Great walk around lens.
-Pretty fast for the price.
-Build quality is very nice.
-Macro capability is useful
-Excellent price
Cons: -No IS(granted, this isn't a necessity on a 17-70, but its nice!)
-Uses 72mm filters. Expensive.
-Distortion in the extremes of the focal range. This is normal for a
lens of this type, and can be corrected in Photoshop using the free
Panorama Tools plug-in.
Great Walkaround & Macro lens.......2007-03-08
Pros: Quick focusing, incredible macro ability, great IQ, good in low light and 17-70 is a great range. Lens is built like a tank and controls are smooth.
Cons: Hunts a bit in low light, reports of back-focusing although mine is dead on.
This lens is a great lens for almost everyday use on my Rebel XT. Good range and good low-light performance puts this way over the kit lens in every category (except weight). Heavy, but not where you really notice. Image quality is excellent. Outfitting it with 72mm filters isn't the cheapest, but worth the trade-off for this lens. If you're looking for a great kit lens replacement or getting a good all-around lens for your body-only camera you just bought, but don't want to break the bank, this is definitely worth looking at.

I haven't had a chance to test it out yet so I'll report back later. One thing that should be noted though is that the 70~300 is not a 1:2 ratio for macro shots. This is 1:3.8. I don't know if it makes a difference but it should be known that there are two models out there. As for fit and finsh everything is as expected for a lens of this quality. The lens housing is "high density plastic" (from the Tamron site). Some might think that is a bad thing but if you take care of your lens it's not an issue. It's definitly a benefit when you wear it around for several hours at a time. So regarding 47th street photo I'm very happy with thier preformance as an online store. I ordered this on a Wednesday night and got it Friday afternoon. I live in Delaware and didn't take the expedited shipping. I wasn't really expecting it till Monday because most merchants on Amazon don't ship right away. A lot of people could learn from that. I buy a lot online and I don't like to wait for it.

This lens does exactly what it states, which is to bring distant images closer.
To the reviewer above who claims that- its too big... I say he's not even an amatuer, he must have never picked up an add-on lens in his life. Of course this lens is big and heavy. Thats how it is able to give such magnification! I guess he wanted camcorder-like "Digital Zoom"

Not worth it's weight.......2007-05-21
I am not saying this is a bad bad lens. But, the problem is about handling it. Too heavy and too long to any serious amateur, whereas this lens is claimed to be used for bird/wild life photography. NOT AT ALL FLEXIBLE.
Quality of pictures is just about average. The only good thing you could do with this is, try lunar photography. With a lot of patience, you might get above-average-quality moon pix.

I am new to photography and wanted to purchase an inexpensive macro lens to see what I could do. I was especially interested in flower pictures. My first time out I went to a friends garden and took pictures of every flower she had, some with bees polinating. I was amazed how clear the photos came out. I e-mailed several of the pictures to my family and friends and they too were amazed. Several have had the pictures printed and framed. This lens is so much fun. Wow!!!
