4 out of 5 stars Dandy Little Computer.......2003-03-25

I ran into many initial problems with this computer. It would freeze sporadically as well as consistently under certain circumstances. For instance, I could not use the sound card while dialing into the Internet. When I say freeze, I mean it totally freezes. No errors, but the display won't update, neither the keyboard or mouse functions, sound ceases, etc. Have to turn it off and back on. The initial reaction I have is the motherboard is bad. After all, I had bought it open-box at a local retain store, and so it must have been returned for the same reason, right?

So I go to return it, describe the problems, and wouldn't you know it, it works fine, even through the modem-sound conflict. I was told the problems I was encountering are because "Office 97 and Windows XP Home aren't compatible." I've been computing for 14 years, programming for 6, and know that's not the problem. I'm told to run System Restore (heard that before, heh) and that of course doesn't improve things any. Therefore, matters were taken into my own hands.

XP is taken off. Windows 2000 [Pro] is the OS for people like me. Buy it before MS removes it from the market place ($... on Amazon, provided you have a relatively recent version of Windows), it's the best version of Windows Microsoft has ever made, as far as I'm concerned. I won't go into details of other software, as it's irrelevant. As I could afford it, other changes followed. The onboard video [is weak], so an AGP Radeon 7000 (64MB) (Sixty-four bucks here on Amazon, you can't go wrong) found its way into the system. Next, another 256 MB of PC133 RAM for forty-bucks came in. There were other upgrades, but these two brought performance up to par with a similarly configured P4-1.8 GHz system. The Athlon wins at some things, the P4 at others.

I wouldn't recommend a system like this to just anybody. Most of these upgrades (not my choices particularly, but _something_) are really necessary for this system to perform. Moreover, most users wouldn't be comfortable performing them.

The other big limitation is the lack of expandability. It has 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP. There's only 1 free drive bay. I maxed out all the internal expansion opportunities to a point where I had to remove the modem and rely on Internet access shared by another computer. The system also has a limit of 512 MB RAM.

As for my problem with the system freezing, it declined significantly in moving from Windows XP to Windows 2000, and further when I began using the "Hibernate" feature in Windows. I won't go into details of how Hibernate works, but if I can boot my system faster and it's more reliable, well, where's the down side?

I had my reservations about buying an eMachine, they have a terrible reputation for both quality and customer service. Unfortunately, I went against my better judgement and decided to buy the T1400. It seems like a good PC for the money and it is as long as there are no problems. Within a month ours started to randomly reset without warning, it didn't matter what you were doinf it would just reset. I called eMachines and they sent out a new power supply (apparently a bad power supply is a common problem with eMachines...). After the new power supply was installed the same problems started again, the resetting has become worse and we have progressed to the point where it will turn off and won't restart for at least 30 minutes. Emachines will repair it under their warranty but I have been told it would take anywhere between 5 weeks (the eMachine estimate) to at least 10 weeks (employees at both Circuit City and CompUSA told me to expect a long wait of at least ten weeks...). Now I will not have a PC for at least five weeks... I think I'll send it in for repairs and sell it when it comes back. I'll never again buy an eMachine, don't trust anyone who tells you they're better than their past reputation.

While this machine may look small, don't think that it is not powerful. I have had this computer for about two weeks now and am very satisfied with it. It is very user friendly and would be a great computer for the office or kids to play on. I have had about five different computers in my life and have liked this model the most. It comes with many built in software programs and office tools. If there was one drawback to this computer, it would have to be game controller. This computer was not meant to play the latest 3D games, but it's other features make up for that. I would recommend this computer to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Better Believe It!!!!.......2005-10-04

I have had this computer now for over four years, and have only had minor issues with the new larger software programs. As for the people who think this is un-upgradable, I have put 512 mb of ram and a new upgraded video card with an additional 256mb of ram. You can always upgrade hard drives as well. Now if you want to upgrade anything else , you better be a certified geek no matter what brand you get. As for the out of date reviews on this site, if 1.3 ghz is not fast enough for you dont buy it, but the difference in processor speeds is the blink of an eye and very hard to appreciate the thousands in price difference for it. At best buy you can get these for 399 after rebates or less....! The deal is the same at that price the models may have changed some. If you are on a budget I recommend this for all applications for home use or homework through college. I also have a high speed internet connection via usb so i never voided my warranty....get real people.

        2 out of 5 stars Crashes.......2005-06-16

I have had this cfor 4 years and it is a decnt computer for the price, but it has hame extremely upset when it crashed the second time. This Emachines is very unreliable and I would not recommend it to anyone that wants a good computer.

        2 out of 5 stars At a first glance..........2003-08-17

At first glasnce this looks like a good machine, no fancy extras driving the price up. Well I purchased this machine and had nothing but trouble with it. It has crashed numerout times losing games, schoolwork, music, everything. Since this machine i am saving my money to buy an APPLE. No more PC's for me.

4 out of 5 stars All You Need to Know About the 1150.......2002-05-05

I'm writing on one right now! Hee hee. If you don't have the cash for a computer with all the bells and whistles, and don't really care about owning a bell OR a whistle, get in your broken down '89 Civic hatchback and purchase this computer!

Being a college student without parents or an income to fall back on, you've got to cut down on some of the non-essentials...like eating. But you can't survive at college without your own computer, unless you camp out in your college library and use the public comps., which isn't fun. Trust me. So I'm very thankful that when I was wandering around Best Buy (looking for CD sales), I saw an eMachines computer for the first time, a T1120, complete with monitor, printer, speakers, software, all at a low price. So I'm thinking, this thing must be held together with bubblegum and the processor's a mouse on an exercise wheel.

So I went to the library, researched it like you're doing now, and decided to buy one, because you can't find anything of higher quality for this price. When I went back to Best Buy they were out of T1120s. I got a raincheck, and when they STILL didn't have an 1120 three weeks later, they gave me an 1150 for the same price.

Nice big 40 GB hard drive (you should still back up your files though). Comes with Windows XP, which is friendly and professional at the same time. The CD burner is excellent. My old one took over an hour to burn a single CD while this one takes about ten minutes and I can't believe it. You can even be on-line while it's burning. The processor is less than perfect. It's supposed to be fast, but today's software just takes longer to process I guess. Although it boots up fairly quickly, I can't open my browser for another 30 seconds, but everything else works immediately. Crisp, bright, colorful 17 inch display. BUT NO CD-ROM OR DVD DRIVE!! I still have to use the library for CD-ROMs.

Comes with six months free MSN. No Ethernet card for cable, DSL, or fast college connections, which is no problem since it'S only $[money] plus installation fee. Oh, but remember that if you get someone to open the case to install the card, you're voiding the one year warranty, so you'll have to buy a warranty from the site or store. Even so, I recommend getting a card, simply because dial-up service is sooo sloowwww. The package doesn't come with printer cables, and the printer itself doesn't come with black ink, only half a cartridge of color. Have to buy those separately. The computer and monitor is a cool steel and dark gray color. Quick fax. The keys on the keyboard give way to gentle pressure, making for easier word processing.

But before buying this, consider that techies say it's not very upgradeable, meaning that when it eventually becomes obsolete, it's hard to improve it to keep up-to-date with current technology. I'm hoping that the costly three-year warranty I bought will help with this. So plan to buy a new one in a few years. I've also heard that customer service is not very helpful, but I wouldn't know since I haven't had to call them.

Setting up this computer is so easy a monkey could probably do it; it comes with a colorful poster-style diagram and it mainly involves putting the red-tipped cable into the red hole, the green cable in the green hole, etc. If you're buying this for a business, you might want to think about getting Microsoft Office. And everyone should think about virus protection unless they don't go on-line. Hope this helps. Happy shopping!

4 out of 5 stars Effective little machine.......2002-06-08

Got this machine for myself Christmas 2001 as a bundle for $560 after rebates at a store in Tucson. Admittedly I've upgraded it quite a bit, but you can't beat the efficiency for the price. I wanted a cheap machine with potential to upgrade, as I've found this is a cheaper method than buying a packed system. For downloading and light application processing the 1Ghz Celeron easily does the job. I've now added 256mb of ram, 60gb hard drive storage, an ethernet card, and a dvd player. All the upgrades cost me $319 with free shipping right here on Amazon.com. I got my new Linksys cable modem and router here too for less than $100 dollars a piece. The machine has responded beautifully to the upgrades and I have since made it the workhorse of my home network. Overall I give it 4 stars because any company that sells windows XP with 128mb ram doesn't deserve 5. Any serious user would tell you the same, but if you have some patience when browsing through folders and such you'll be fine with the 128. And the eMachines tech support is a joke, but with this computer you shouldn't have to contact them with any hardware issues. Well, you can't beat the capabilities for the listed price and you can't beat my machine for ... after upgrades ANYWHERE!

5 out of 5 stars fantastic value for a great price.......2002-01-20

I bought this system as a bundle with monitor and printer from Best Buy for $479 and it's been incredible! Better than I expected and I even took my savings and added the extended warranty so I could have it serviced locally rather than shipping it to the manufacturer (one e-machines drawback). I just have to watch the CD-RW to make sure it doesn't get too warm. (I was forewarned this is an e-machines drawback) I did get a good response when I called their customer service after I did not receive my rebate--they were friendly and responded right away and did not keep me on hold for a long time--and I did finally receive my rebate! It burns great sounding CDs, and XP has been great--so if you just need an all-purpose system, this is definitely for you.

              Amazon.com Product Description

Sceptre Technology's X7G Komodo IV is a 17-inch TFT multimedia LCD whose affordability, space-saving design, and wall-mount capabilities lend it to both style- and budget-conscious offices. You'll enjoy bright, deep colors and clear text produced by its high brightness (250 nits maximum) and high contrast ratio (400:1), while its 25 ms response time (15 ms rising, 10 ms falling) and 0.264 mm dot pitch deliver smooth still and moving images.

The monitor's full, 17-inch viewable screen displays a native resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 for outstanding image detail. LCD monitors employ two sheets of polarizing material with a liquid crystal solution between them. An electric current passed through the liquid causes the crystals to align so that light cannot pass through. Each crystal, therefore, is like a shutter, either allowing light to pass or blocking that light. This is a thin-film-transistor LCD, a type of flat-panel display in which each pixel is controlled by one to four transistors, ensuring the best resolution of all flat-panel techniques.

The X7G draws up to 33 percent less power than a traditional CRT monitor of the same size. Planning to take it overseas? No problem—the monitor offers a built-in power adapter that lets it accept inputs from AC 100 to 240V, 50/60 Hz. The screen is also flicker-free and emits almost no radiation. A Kensington security port can be used to install an optional anti-theft cable. The monitor is PC and Mac compatible, although Mac users must be connected either to a Power Macintosh using an IBM VGA card or to a Mac that uses a separate "sync on video" sync signal output. This model is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

              1 out of 5 stars known fault.......2007-02-02

Apparently, this company knows there is a faulty part in this "line" of units, but refuses to take responsibility. My friends bought a similar unit prior to my purchase. Just after the one year anniversary, the unit failed. I am now just past one year and am having the same failure. The company offered to fix my friends unit for $150, knowing they have a faulty component, why should there be a charge?
So far the company is disputing when I purchased my unit(?) and I've sent them a fax of my invoice. The fact remains I have a faulty unit that I can't shut down for fear it won't start up again. Shame on Sceptre for not standing behind their product, they should have done a recall or made some other arrangement to fix the units.
Amazon should be more aware of the lax policies with this provider. They(Sceptre) claim you(Amazon) purchased this moniter in 2004 and would not have had it in your inventory when I ordered it November 22, 2005.
I am discusted with companies thinking a fairly expensive purchase is disposable within one year!

1 out of 5 stars Died after warranty expired.......2006-02-28

The display looks good when your first purchase it, but parts are cheap and speakers are terrible. The power supply died exactly one year after purchase, just in time for the warranty to expire. Look elsewhere for lasting quality.

2 out of 5 stars Customer Service is Terrible.......2005-06-27

Within 9 months of purchasing this monitor a thin red line appeared that ran from the top of the monitor to the bottom. When I contacted the company for repairs the customer service was terrible. I was NEVER able to reach a live person, was constantly disconnected, and informed the only way I could be guaranteed that my product would be accepted for repair was to return it in its orginal packaging (9 months later mind you). I would not purchase this product again purely based on service issues.

              4 out of 5 stars GOOD MONITOR.......2005-02-21

THE SCEPTRE XG7 17" MONITOR WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A 5 STAR BUT THE SPEAKERS ARENT VERY GOOD.THEY ARE KINDA SMALL BUT I EXPECTED BETTER SOUND.

              5 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2004-11-15

I got this in August 2004. It arrived quickly--sooner than originally anticipated. Great job Amazon. I sent in the Rebate form to Sceptre confirmed receipt. Still no rebate and paperwork was received by them well within rebate period--all necessary documentation provided. Not one word from them (it is now November). So if you are buying this expecting the rebate--just know that it might not come through for you. I missed asking for Amazon to give me a price break due to the price dropping so am stuck with $50 higher price than expected. Still a good LCD Monitor--no complaints in that regard. Do not hesitate at the current price at Amazon. It was the best for the price with clear picture & no problems with drivers for my computer setup on Win98.
