A Great Investment For Serious Photographers.......2007-09-18
This product is invaluable for anyone who is serious about the security of their digital photos. The bonus is that the Epson 3000 does so much more! What a great surprise to find out I can download my music onto it. I guess I am one of the few that hasn't bought an ipod yet... the other incredible bonus is that it will show your photos as a slideshow & you can use your own songs as a background! WOW!!! I created a file of an unbelievable sunset I shot on my Canon 5D from beginning to end. I shot for about 45 minutes & took about 40 shots. The slideshow was about 20 minutes & is great on the viewer. I found out I could buy a camcorder AV plug & plug it into my television. OMG!!! I stood in my living room & cried. I could not believe how awesome it was to see my photos with my music on my TV!!! My camera is still blowing my mind & now I have a great way to share the photos without having to learn new software on the computer.
The Epson P-3000 isn't as complicated as I thought it would be. The viewer is a good size & is hard to see outside in sunlight, but that hasn't been a problem. It's also a great little viewer to show people your pics. I'm happy!! Just have to figure out how to get the slideshows on a cd or dvd. I took the advice of Scott Kelby The Digital Photography Book on some of his recommended items. I bought the P-3000 right before going on vacation as a means to backup my photos while away from computers. I never had to worry about filling up my card. I occasionally shoot weddings & this is a great way to ensure that you don't lose any shots because your card went bad.
I am very pleased.
As advertised.......2007-09-09
This player is what I was led to believe and look forward to using it on a upcoming trip to Africa. It does download my Lexar Wa compact flash cards both thru the CF port as well as from my camera thru the USB connection.
Great viewer and Storage device!.......2007-08-28
This product met and exceed not only my expectations but the product as well. I no longer need to carry a laptop to download and view the photos. I purchased the large 80 GB model. No problems at all with the battery holding a charge. The viewer is bright and large. The only negative factor is that you can not rename the files. However, that is no problem as the unit adds a new folder for each compact flash card download. I would recommend this product without any hesitation!
Would you buy an MP3 player with the following features:.......2007-08-26
1. Absolutely fabulous sound quality.
2. No playlists whatsoever. The only way you can listen to the songs is in the order of the time date stamp on the mp3 file. And then from the oldest to the newest.
3. The player renames the songs to cryptic 8.3 format names when it imports them. You'll have to remember that ABC12345.mp3 is really "Talkin About My Generation" by the Zimmers.
4. You can't just plug in a flash card and play the songs on it. Oh no. That would be too simple. They let you do that in the P-2000 but now you will have to copy the songs over to the hard drive first. Swell, eh?
Doesn't sound that appealing, does it? Welcome to the wonderful world of Epson programming where the cardinal rule is that if it's useful we'll get rid of it in the next iteration of "improvements."
One important reason to have a picture viewer is to put on a show for yourself and friends or colleagues. Right? Hard to do if you can't define the order the pictures will appear.
Perhaps they didn't intend for it to be used this way? Unlikely. Epson provides an assortment of picture fades and merges so a slide show will appear professional. One only cares about this sort of thing when showing pictures to others. They also provide a TV output. So they clearly intended this as a presentation device but left out any ability to order the slides other than by changing the file modification dates. Not something easy to do, by the way.
Would you buy a slide projector if you knew the only way it would show slides is from the oldest first no matter how you arranged the slides in the tray? I don't think so. But that's what you're getting here.
Imagine you've just taken picture number 350 on your flash card. You insert it into the P-5000 for a quick review. Nope. That won't work. You'll have to scroll through page after page of 349 thumbnails first because the unit shows pictures from the oldest to the newest. Then you'll select the thumbnail (about five minutes and a sore thumb later) and download it to the hard disk. Only THEN can you preview it. How convenient.
The following is a quote from their P-2000 FAQ. It shows you the mentality at work here.
Q:
The display order of my thumbnail images changed after I upgraded the P-2000's firmware from 01.01 to 02.02. How does the new firmware change the way my thumbnail images are displayed?
A:
If your P-2000 has firmware 02.02, *the images are displayed in chronological order, from oldest to newest*, determined by the date and time that the images were created or modified.
If your P-2000 has firmware 01.01, the display order varies depending on how the files were copied to the memory card. If the images were copied from a computer, *the display order will match the sort order that the computer used (by Name, Size, Type, Date Modified, etc)*. If the images were copied directly from a digital camera, they will be displayed in the order the pictures were taken.
Notice that Version 2.02 "improved" the product by making it IMPOSSIBLE to arrange one's files on a PC and then download them to display in that order! Some improvement.
I had to quote from the P-2000 FAQ because the P-5000 was "improved" from the start and never allowed arbitrary picture presentation order. Therefore there was no question to ask.
This product, in my view, is a gorgeous looking piece of programmatic hooey. Just lovely until you try to use it in practical situations and see that it offers such crippled functionality as to be worthless.
Vertical pictures.......2007-08-15
The Epson P3000 is a great storage device. The instruction booklet is very bare bones and basic and at time is so cryptic as to be of little use. When putting a slide show together the unit will not allow picture taken vertically to be shown that way. They are show horizontal. I have been unable to rotate them in the unit. I have also been unable to get the unit to accept the rotation when I use either of two editing programs I have. The unit just will not show them in their correct perspective. Getting music into the is also difficult.
Over all it is a great unit to move pictures from place to place and store them.
I would purchase the unit again and do recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Too Many Gotchas.......2007-08-23
The P-2000, at first, seems wonderful. But over time the warts begin to appear.
This device can be attached to you PC as a hard drive. However, it cannot be USED as a hard drive. Deleting files, changing folders, defragmenting, or formatting the P-2000 can render it inoperable.
Because of the above, deleting image files is a laborious process. It took me 1/2 hour to delete, one by one, the many folders I created during a one-month vacation. Why doesn't Epson provide a DELETE ALL?
There is a known incompatibility with newer Lexar CF cards, and Epson has no plans to correct this problem. (The Lexar cards work fine in the camera and on the PC).
I recommend against purchasing this, or any other, Epson multimedia storage drive. Since Epson is not committed to keeping their products compatible with the latest memory cards, the useful life of their products will be very short.
P-2000 is unreliable.......2007-03-15
I am a professional photographer and have relied on the P-2000 and a redundant Dell notebook for photo storage in the field. The P-2000 corrupted about 10% of files downloaded from several CF cards (Lexar Professional 133x media). The corruption is transparent until the files are unloaded to a desktop. The original files on the CF card remained intact and error free. On a recent wildlife shoot in East Africa I returned to discover that more than 300 of 3000 plus frames were not retrievable. What makes matters worse for the P-2000 is that it cannot be repaired in the field. One cannot restore its operating software from an external source and the cost of doing so is prohibitively more than the instrument is worth. I will not invest in another one, personally.
Epson P-2000 Is A Good Product.......2007-01-10
I am basically happy with my Epson P-2000 except for one issue. If you want photos entered into an album on the Epson P-2000 in a certain order for presentation, you can't do it. Photos are shown in the order and date they were taken on your digital camera. After spendidng hours creating a 700 picture file on my computer and transfering it to the Viewer in the order I wanted them presented, I learned from Epson Tech Support this feature is not currently availble on the P-2000. I explained my reasoning for wanting them viewed in a certain order, and tech support said this may be available in a future update. Other than this, I am enjoying the P-2000 to store and view my photos.
Epson p-2000.......2007-01-09
Does an excelent job and has a lot of versitility, but is heavy and slow to load the pictures each time you try to initially view them. (This pertains to the pictures that are already in a folder on the p-2000. I would have expected these to be faster to view then pictures being downloaded.) Once you've been through the "slide show" once, the images load quicker the second time. Had no proplems uploading and downloading from my computer. No problems downloading directly from my camera's card. Overall I am quite happy with my purchase. Screen gives a very good image. Very clear and crisp. Worked great while we were traveling. I used it to unload my camera card so I didn't have to bring extra cards.
Very, very nice.......2007-01-05
Pros:
- Field backup of your photos
- Nice display
- Easy to understand and use (compared to, say, your camera)
Cons which, if corrected, would put it in the 5 star:
- Slow to load from CF to internal HDD
- No external battery charger
- Cannot zoom in on camera RAW files
- Price $200 less (might as well dream)
4 stars. Worth owning.
