Awesome Protection.......2007-09-15

I wanted to make my macbook a little more "girlie", and read several reviews on different ones. After purchasing this one, I actually received the iskin model (which must be the same as this Dr. Bott one), and was very impressed. I've had it for a few weeks, and it has flattened out nicely and works perfectly. Gives a nice temporary accent to the computer and protects it as well- highly recommend the purchase.

This was purchased for my grandaughter. She likes it for her laptop. I also purchased a clear one for myself to go on my desktop I don't like it. It feels stiky and cumbersome to touch. I would not recomend this to a friend.

Where to begin? Well, I have been using this keyboard cover on my new MacBook Pro. Initially, it seemed ok, but after a week, I have major complaints.

Here is what it does well:
1) Keeps water/dust/fingerprints off your keyboard.

Here is what it DOES NOT do well:
1) It does not fit the keys very well. The edges curl upwards because it is too small to fit the whole keyboard.

2) Since it's too small, I am constantly pressing the spacebar also when I press any key on the bottom row (ZXCVBNM <>?). This is VERY annoying and it happens frequently.

3) It looks clear in the picture, but it is actually an odd shade of semi-clear that prevents you from viewing the keys at any angle except directly top-down.

4) This color also prevents the ambient backlighting from being seen.

5) The top and bottom of the cover is a magnet for dust and hair.

6) The return key is fitted with the \ key, so I also find myself pressing one or the other when I'm not trying to.

I am very unhappy with this cover and wish I had not purchased it. I have owned another iSkin.com product for my iBook and loved it. It's a shame that this one is so poorly made.

I would not recommend that anyone purchase this product until these major defects have been worked out with a future revision.

WARNING: May Fry Your iBook - Otherwise, Okay.......2007-02-26

I already have an iSkin cover for my desktop iMac keyboard, and bought this item for my old Clamshell G3 iBook for the same reason: to muffle the keyboard noise. It works as advertised. Unlike the desktop version, I didn't even have to trim it to fit the spacebar. Like the desktop version, it's grossly overpriced (the manufacturer's cost can't be more than about $1), but there's no cheaper alternative, so you might as well bite the bullet and buy it.

Having said that, they should include a WARNING for Clamshell iBook owners: if you leave this cover on the keyboard when you close the iBook, it will force down a couple of keys and prevent the iBook from going to sleep. Because the computer vents much of its heat through the keyboard, your iBook will then heat up, possibly cooking itself to death. Mine just sat overnight like that, and when I picked it up this morning it felt like a hot skillet. It's now shut down and sitting on my desk to cool - it seems to have survived, but I don't know how many hours this experience took off its lifespan.

The same thing may happen with other PowerBook and iBook models, so be sure you test the machine's automatic sleep function before folding it up with the iSkin in place.

Great value, nice feel, good protection........2007-09-24

I bought this because even though I don't eat popcorn or crusty sandwich breads atop my keyboard, somehow something always manages to get in there. Bottled air is great for getting dust out but it sometimes just moves the big stuff around.

PROS:
The cover has a really nice soft feel to it when I type. It lessens the click-click sounds (especially with long fingernails) and just gives it a nice cushiony feel to the keyboard.

It's keeping out dust, dirt, crumbs, whatever else. My son uses the laptop almost daily and every once in a while I'll remove the cover just to see how clean the keys still are.

You can see the lit keys beneath it, and still see the letters when they aren't lit.

It doesn't leave marks on the screen when I close the laptop lid, which I was concerned about for some reason. (I think another review somewhere said that.)

CONS:
It isn't free. :)

All in all, I'd probably never go without one of these again.

Pretty good........2007-09-09

I bought this for a 17" Macbook Pro, and it fits like a glove.

Works great, stays in place well, has a nice feel. The product documentation indicates that it can be left on the computer at all times (presumably even when the laptop's lid is closed), however I've found that if you close the lid and leave the the iSkin on, it transfers oil to the screen more easily than the keyboard itself would. Just something to note - I find myself removing it when I close the computer.

I just applied the iSkin to my two-month-old Macbook Pro AFTER I spilled half a cup of coffee into the keyboard. The laptop survived with nothing but a dead DEL key which I'm grateful for -- but after taking it to an Apple Store to investigate a repair, I discovered that, because it was damage from a liquid spill, the repair bill would come to $800. And since the damage was caused by my accident, the warranty doesn't cover it.

I've learned how to work around the absence of the DEL key (just couldn't bring myself to pay $800 to fix one key) but while at the Apple Store, I purchased an iSkin to protect my poor laptop from my clumsy self.

It fits well and is really no hindrance at all -- recommended (especially if you HAVE to have that cup of coffee at your desk to get any work done.)

Great Protection.......2007-03-24

I ordered this product to protect the keyboard on a new 17" MacBook Pro and I am very happy with it. I was a bit nervous about it moving around, but it doesn't. It is molded to fit the keys and it is slightly bigger than the keyboard, so it will overlap the edges.

I actually like the feel of it better than of the keyboard itself! It is soft and velvety -- a very nice tactile experience.

You will need to press the keys slightly harder than normal, but it didn't bother me a bit. I work on the computer on average about 8 - 10 hours a day and I never take this off.

I wasn't sure if the illuminated keyboard would be seen through the iSkin, but you can see them.

I would highly recommend this product. It will keep everything out of your keyboard nicely.

better than expected.......2007-03-15

Originally I thought I'd only use this product when I thought there might be an elevated risk of crudding up the keyboard. Once I got it and put it on I haven't taken it off yet. Of course the typing feel is mushier, but I actually found it doesn't bother me at all. I don't think I have any more problems typing than normal -- the compactness of the laptop keyboard is more of an issue. It's always a good idea with these super thin laptops to get some sort of screen protector, even more so with a keyboard protector -- I got a microfiber cloth sheet from ShaggyMac for that purpose.

The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because the text on the top row of function keys doesn't perfectly line up with their keys below -- it's all shifted to the right. That's only an issue at night with the keyboard illumination on as it can make it kind of difficult to determine which function key is what.

This iSkin does an excellent job in protection your macbook from crumbs or dust that may inadvertantly enter your keyboard. It took a little while to get used to the feel, but it is easy to use. I haven't washed it, but it is easy to remove if you desire. IT fits like a glove over the keys. It takes a little work, but once you get it over the keys (take your time) it fits well. Beware it may leave a slight imprint on screen but is not visible when in use only when the screen is turned off. I used screen cleaner and it cleaned right up. IT's well worth protecting your macbook. It's glow in the dark features only work though when the screen is not on. The keys are very easy to read and do not wear off with 4 months of use.

Since I don't type on top of the keys, the iSkin bunches up into the side of the keyboard causing the keys to stick down, so I use it only to cover the keys when not using the computer. Although you can't feel them, air pockets can't be removed from under many of the keys.

If you want a cheaper alternative use Saran Wrap. Why spend so much money just because it has an apple label on it?. My keyboard is nice and clean. When the saran wrap gets dirty just wrap it around again. May I add it's much more snug on the keyboard too!

I purchased this for my iMac & I lasted about 3 days w/ it. I couldn't get used to it. It would make my delete key stick & I my space bar would not respond. The plastic from it would get 'stuck' & would cause it to not make a space.

It got annoying for someone who can touch type very quickly.

Needless to say, it is going back to the store...

Despite its being obviously overpriced in relation to its manufacturing cost (at most a nickel's worth of plastic) I seriously considered buying one of these--until I compared it with the cost of buying a whole new keyboard. With an educational discount you can get a spare or replacement keyboard for $26 ($29 non-educational). That's way better protection than just putting a condom over the keys. And at that rate this product is not only not worth it--it's a ripoff.

Just What I Wanted!.......2007-05-12

The iSkin Protouch fits my iBook G4 keyboard perfectly! Earlier reviews mentioned it not fitting well, but I can't say this.. mine is really nice. Maybe the company worked on that issue.

My only regret is that I didn't get this sooner as some of the letters have worn off on my keys, and I've had to clean them so often. Also I dripped some liquid on the keyboard once and now my forward key no longer functions.

I can type easily with the skin in place. It clings well to the keys. The screen closes down with it in place without any problem.

I have just started using it so I haven't washed it yet, but it doesn't seem like a big deal. If the skin is not available in blue, just get the clear... it doesn't matter. This device is a necessity in my humble opinion.

Puchased one of these for my Apple laptop and it does not fit! The directions say to "massage gently into each key" but this does not help it fit any better. The material is flimsy and slightly sticky, and even barely touching it with your wrist or fingers will cause it to lift or shift around. The overlap of this protector is too wide, and will heat up very quickly on most laptops. It will also fall off when you fold up or carry the laptop. It also sticks to the monitor. Save your money, the quality of this is no different than the generic ones available at most computer stores.

I bought two and they both don't fit I have a powerbook and a ibook they fit neither they bulged out and have edges that go past the key board. I was kind of expecting some sort of adhesive on the back of them but there apparently supposed to stay on the keyboard with the force of gravity. who knew I didn't and the quality of the fit was poor. also too expensive. I am returning both. I would give it no stars but that isn't an option

Fits perfectly on my iBook G4. Its great for keeping dust or crumbs off the keyboard and very easy to clean. Just some warm soapy water and let it dry. It has this interesting ability to make all my typing quiet. I record all my lectures and I used to hear the push of every key, but not anymore.

This product is simply fantastic. I have an iBook G4 and it fits perfectly. iBooks also tend to have noisier keyboards and the cover significantly cuts down on the noise the keys make. The keys are soft and the cover is a breeze to clean. It took me a couple days to adjust to having the cover on, but it was very easy to get used to and well worth it.

I absolutely hate the iskin protouch. It doesn't stay on my keyboard correctly and it hinders my typing.

Effective, But Obscenely Overpriced, and MAY FRY YOUR COMPUTER.......2006-09-14

The biggest downside to this item is that it makes me feel exploited - it couldn't cost more than a dollar to manufacture, but it retails for $20, which probably sets some kind of Guinness record for product markups. It's just a piece of silicone plastic molded to the shape of an Apple keyboard.

On the other hand, it seems to be very effective at what it does, whether you want it to protect the keyboard or quiet it. I was mainly looking for the latter function, and am pretty happy so far. It does take a few minutes to get it massaged into place correctly, and if you tend to strike keys (especially the spacebar) at a low angle, you may find that it jams, but other than that, it performs as advertised. I just wish someone would set up shop to compete with this distributor, perhaps by selling the same thing by the dozen and calling it disposable.

UPDATES:

1. The spacebar jamming problem can be fixed by carefully trimming the lip off the bottom of the iSkin, all the way across.

2. I just bought the iBook version of this (having owned the desktop keyboard version already), and have this WARNING for Clamshell iBook owners: if you leave this cover on the keyboard when you close the iBook, it will force down a couple of keys and prevent the iBook from going to sleep.
