Electronic Flash EF-500 DG SUPER is designed to work with both AF 35mm SLR and Digital SLR cameras of popular manufacturers, for advanced flash photography. It has a maximum guide number of 165 in feet or 50 in meter at 105mm focal length (ISO 100). The projection angle of the flashlight is set automatically to match the lens' focal length ranging from 28mm wide-angle to 105mm medium-telephoto. It also incorporates a built-in diffuser that expands the angle of illumination down to that of 17mm lens.It enables full automatic flash photography by TTL automatic flash exposure control. It now includes S-TTL flash photography for Sigma, 3-D multi-sensor balanced fill flash function and iD-TTL flash photography for Nikon, E-TTL II flash photography for Canon, ADI flash photography and P-TTL flash photography for Minolta.For bounce flash it can be tilted 90? upwards and 7? downward for close-ups. Also it can be swiveled 180? to the left and 90? to the right. It incorporates "modeling flash" mode to provide proper light distribution to check the shadow of the subject. I've been using this one for more than a year now, and I am pretty satisfied. It does what it is supposed to, and I didn't notice any problems with this unit yet. It has many features, but the one which separates it from Canon models is optical slave function which I use a lot. This flash will get triggered in slave mode by another flash! Recycling time is 5-6 sec in full power mode, or about 2 sec if blast strength is reduced

Does everything the Canon EX 500 series can do, but for $200 less.
I like to use all authentic Canon lenses and accessories. But when I saw this flash I was sold. I just used it on a 9-hour wedding job. It worked perfectly on the same batteries all day long. ETTL communication with my "A Type" EOS digital was perfect. Also works quite well as a slave unit.
Definitely would recommend the Sigma EF 500 DG.

Does everything I need it to do. It has been very reliable at weddings and events. I wouldn't mind a second one.
Someday, I'll afford a Canon 580EX. But until then, this is a great product for the price.

The Flash has preform well with little problem. the direction needs updating however. I am a novice user and I think the direction don't take in account for the novice.

best flash I could have found, and at the best price. I searched all over stores and the web. I should have just settled with Amazon at the start. This flash works perfectly, has great range and wide angle ability.
Questionable compatability.......2007-01-26
This is really nice strobe. I works great, better than expected with my FILM camera (Minolta 800si). It does not seem to like the Digital Camera (Minolta Maxxium 7D). I have to over expose 2 stops to get a usable photograph. I'm not sure if it is the programming of the camera or flash unit. With the wireless, it does not always fire all the flashes, or some fire prior to the shutter releasing. The 7D uses a double fired flash to get an exposure reading. Disable this feature and you might as well get out the old Manual camera. If you need a flash with these bells and whistles - buy a Konica-Minolta/Sony original.
Surpassed my expectation.......2006-11-05
It worked flawlessly with my Sony DSLR-A100. It's packed full of features and has very consistent results. I was also very impressed with the battery use. I used it for a wedding and one set of batteries lasted even through the reception! Impressive!
I'm very happy with it and would recommend it to anyone.
Sigma EF 500 DG Flash.......2006-08-23
I was looking for a Minolta flash but after reading about the Sigma I decided to give it a try. It was about 1/2 the price the Minolta and had more power. I like the way the flash sinks its zoom setting to my camera's zoom lens. The wireless feature is easy to use and gives a person quite a bit of flexibilty with lighting the subject. I'm still learning but so far the flash has done everything I expected.

Supurb flash performance.......2006-07-10
Sigma built a winning hot-shoe mount flash head when they decided to put this one together. The flash has plenty of features for a price well below the Nikon line of flashes. It is offers plenty of power and I've found when mated to my Nikon N80 that it gives me perfect exposures every time. The built in near-infrared focus-assist beam is much better than the white annoyo-light built into consumer camera bodies, which is a real plus when working with live subjects such as grumpy old geezers or fidgety tricycle-motors. This results in more captured smiles and less squints, frowning faces, or spooked pets.
The flash unit can be set for fully automatic 3D TTL readings, or can be used in full manual mode. The stoboscopic multi-flash has an extremely wide adjustment range for strength, flash duration, and number or flashes. This is great when doing long exposures of single nearby subjects in action.
The flash unit is easy to operate and seems to be plenty durable. The instructions are easy to understand and well written. The only thing missing from this unit is a jack for use with external power sources, not a major inconvenience, but you'll want to always carry spare batteries with you.

Getting What You Pay For.......2007-09-09
Yes, the Opteka Flash is a great deal if you're on a budget like I was - however, you should be warned that the quality of the product you are getting is fairly shoddy. The plastic feels only a bit better than dollar-store material, and feels far lighter and more fragile than a comparable Sigma or Canon 430 flash.
The flash itself works as advertised, with the zoom, manual features, strobe, and ETTL giving me no problems.
However, the flash I got seemed to have hanging electronics - as the LCD panel tended to freeze up as I was changing modes.
After a few weeks of use, the electronics were fine - however, I found that the plastic casing got caught on itself where the tilt hinge was, and the flash was stuck in the forward-down position until I took it apart to reposition it.
So, if you're on a really tight budget, this will do in a pinch. If you're planning on doing photography in the long run, you're much better off with a Canon 430EX or a Sigma 500. I have played with both of those, and they are of far greater construction quality.

Wery nice flash, not expensive, a lot of functions....But it was died after one hour working!!! Everything was working (LCD,indicators,zoom...)but flash. I've received the new one (broken flash was exchanged during one week) and i'm going to keep it as backup flash. As a main flash i'm gonna buy the Canon 430EX (something like for $240 on Amazon). Three stars because this flash is unreliable....so far.
Opteka EF-600DG Flash is an Excellent Value.......2007-08-19
Based on the these posted user reviews, I purchased the Optreka EF-600DG flash and have been extremely pleased with it performance and the fact that I can use it on my Canon S-5IS, my Canon 20D, and my Canon XP interchangeably. The full bounce and tilt features, along with the flash's auto focus assist feature, available when used with Canon EOS cameras are very useful. This flash represents a real value.
EF-600DG Super died quickly........2007-08-18
I bought this after reading the two other recommendations on this list, figuring that the price is great and the features look good. I got the unit and it did everything they said. Recycled quickly, good flash power, zoomed with my D10 and lenses properly. I was happy.
Then the unit stopped flashing. It sounds like the capacitors start to charge, then I hear a staticy sound from the unit. Everything else works, including the zoom, back panel light, etc. Just no flash any more.
I'm now working on the RMA process, so once I get a new once and it lasts longer, I'd be happy to raise my rating higher, but having it die so quickly was a disappointment. I may just have to move up to the Sigma model at about twice the cost. Which would be a shame.
To summarize: 5 stars for features and useability.
1 star for dying in under three weeks of light use.

When the EF 500 DG ST was out of stock I ponied up for this. Couldn't be happier! Not sure why it was given a two star review, that is uncalled for and ridiculous. Slave capabilities work just fine for me. Was not impressed by the Pentax offering at this price and I think this is comparable to the AF 540 Pentax flash.

It gets the job done. That's about all I can say about it. The wireless TTL doesn't work on my K10d. If I could go back I would buy Pentax or the lower model Sigma.
