This adapter only accepts Type I CompactFlash cards, IT WILL NOT WORK with Type II CF cards because they are thicker than a Type I and the slot in this adapter isn't large enough. Amazon's picture appears to be an older version which WOULD accept a Type II CF card, but SimpleTech's current version of model# STI-CFADII is different. Gread adaptor, easy to use.......2005-01-18

I use this adaptor to read a 1 GB SimpleTech CF card that I use for an A95 Canon digital camera. This adaptor is metal, and the quality is good. Just insert your card into the adaptor, plug the adaptor into the appropriate slot in your computer, and you are off. The computer should recognize the card automatically, and a new drive will show up for it under My Computer (Win XP).

Make sure that you put the card into the adaptor before inserting it into the slot. If you just put the adaptor in without the card, NOTHING HAPPENS! Just telling you this so you can avoid a scare.

I have two SimpleTech cards, and they are both reliable as is this adaptor. I currently recommend SimpleTech, and will continue to do so until given a reason not to.

Ok, I just got a new digital camera and decided to buy another compactflash card from Simpletech and the Flashlink CF card reader, so I can get my pics to my PC fast. Then a friend suggested that I try using my CF cards as mini hard drives! I tell you it works. All I needed was the Simpletech PC card adapter and it like using a small floppy with alot more storage space!! Awesome!!

The floppy disk adapter perfectly suits people like myself who still have old computers without USB. One first installs the software from the included CD and then formats the memory stick. Be warned that you had better print or save any images you already might have on the memory stick before formatting as all data is lost in formatting.
Once you've formatted you can take pictures and immediately upload and print them if desired by inserting the memeory stick to the floppy and inserting the floppy into your FD drive.

My company purchased this flopy disc interface so that we could let any of the graphic artists pop the card into the machines without moving the USB reader we have around.. unfortunatly the card won't work on a dual processor system, so none of our graphic artists can use it. I think for the price we paid for it, it should be able to work on any system!

Needed item for most computers, but costly.......2002-12-14

My computer doesn't have a port for a Memory Stick, so using any one of Sony's products that use them is impossible without using this adapter. Sony's digital cameras and digital voice recorders (why I have one) all use this media format, so forgetting to buy one can prevent your enjoyment of your own equipment.

To use the adapter, you just slide the Stick into the adapter, and then the adapter goes into your regular 3.5" disk drive, looking just like a regular disk. There is some software included to assist in the applications you will use with it, inluding the voice recognition program I originally hoped to use, but is sold separately.

I don't really know why the item is as much as it is, but it is necessary for most folks. I guess one way of looking at it is that it offers the same functionality as a Compact Flash card reader, just more expensive.

Works for a PC, not on a Mac.......2002-05-31

A new writer recently got a Sony Cybershot and brought in his Memory Stick and disk adapter for us to download his pictures onto our Macintosh systems. Here's what we found out:
1: It does not work with external USB floppy drives (took forever to come up- and then it showed a blank 32K disk.
2: Switched to an older 61xx PowerPC Mac - the floppy drive showed up faster, but showed a blank 41K disk.
3: tried using the utility CD that came with it - It had a conflict with the PC Exchange/File Exchange extension. We turned THAT off and restarted- and the utility promptly started up and froze the machine.
4: tried using the gadget on a Mavica FD 87 Sony Camera - it didn't work. that answered my long-standing question on that matter.

The device must be cracked open to insert the XD Card exposing the circuit board. I think there's less chance of damaging the card or the card reader if you could just insert the card into a slit, like in other devices. Compact size is a pro.

I purchased this item at Fry's for $7.99 and it has performed flawlessly. I do lots of card swapping, and have been wondering how long the lid will last. Still going strong at right about 1 year. Mine also included a cable that makes this and other USB devices a snap to connect to any PeeCee. No more reaching around to the back of the system to plug something in. I use the cable more than the device! Overall has worked great for me, and you can't beat the price.

Flimsy piece of crap.......2007-03-30

Very weakly built, it broke within a week. The lid doesn't attach securely and, held only by one tiny hair of plastic, broke. Also, the chip is exposed and thus vulnerable. It doesn't make good connection with the card, so the damn thing will read only when it wants to! I had to fiddle with it and pray to it to make a connection, and even if it did it was unstable.

What a cheap piece of crap. Please save yourself the headache and get something else.

OK, But Wish it Were USB 2.0.......2006-06-19

So far, this XtraDrive works fine. Once I got my camera's SD card into it and plugged it into a USB port on my computer, XP found it without trouble. I didn't need any additional drivers or anything special. However, I do worry about several things. First (though it's a desire and not a worry), I wish this were a USB 2.0 device instead of a USB 1.1 device. The reason is speed. USB 1.1 transfers at only 12 Mbits/s, whereas USB 2.0 transfers at 480 Mbits/s. I'm currently using a 1 GByte SD card with the XtraDrive. At 12 Mbits/s, it would take (8 bits/byte) x (10^9) bytes / (12 x 10^6 bits/sec) = .667 x 10^3 = 667 seconds or 11 minutes (best case) to transfer to whole card. A USB 2.0 interface would do that in 1/40th the time or 17 seconds (best case). Of course, that assumes the SD card, itself, can handle the transfer speed. Anyway, USB 2.0 would be a whole heck of a lot faster.

My actual worries about the XtraDrive all have to do with fragility. First, opening the SD card compartment is difficult: You have to really push on a small plastic clip in a slot to get the thing to a state where you can pry it open: I don't know how long the plastic casing will stand up to that kind of treatment. Second, you insert the SD card by putting it onto the surface of the open compartment and sliding it forward. You could very easily start the card from the wrong place or not slide it properly since it's guided on only two sides. So, over time, that might damage the XtraDrive or the SD card. Third, I'm guessing that I have to put the cover back on while I'm using the XtraDrive for stability: that goes back to the problem with opening that compartment. And, finally, getting the plastic USB port cover off the business end of the XtraDrive is also difficult. Other than that, the device works flawlessly.

Overall, I subtract one star for the lack of USB 2.0, and one star for possible long term fragility. Thus, I give the XtraDrive an OK 3 stars out of 5 rating.

From the description it sounds like a muli-cards reader but it is not.
It only reads xD.
That said, It is very small and sweet and works great.

This real plug and play compact flash card reader is a must for every laptop owner. Any laptop has a PCMCIA slot, and every laptop nowadays comes with a modem , LAN , built in, so you use the PCMCIA slot for nothing, but the reader.

I purchased this unit to facilitate the exchange of jpeg's between my Sony Digital Camara and my desktop PC. While you can read and write data to the Memory Stick Reader with the PC, when you attempt to download files created on a Sony camara it will give an error of "The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." The same files are accessible in my camara or Sony Notebook: they cannot be accessed with the SmartDisk Reader. My attempts with SmartDisk Technical Support were unsuccessful.

Don't purchase this unit if you plan to use it with genuine Sony hardware.

I have had one of these for weeks and have had Hell's own time trying to get it to work with Win2K. When it is kind enough to let itself be installed, it stops woring when I restart. I got complex instructions from SanDisk support involving a registry edit and it failed again. Now they are telling me I need to use it with a powered hub. I bought one, and I will try it, but for now it is an expensive paperweight.

I have a digital camera that uses CompactFlash, and a Palm that supports secure digital cards. I wanted something that would enable me to read both formats. This product came to the rescue. So two things happened that [were bad]:

1) I bought a laptop, not realizing that it didn't have a floppy drive.

2) My digital camera came with a secure digital card that was WAY too small to be useful (16MB), and I immediately replaced it with something practical. Now what to do with that tiny little card?

Needing a way to transfer files at home and at work, I bought this great little card reader. I love it!!

The set up was a little shaky; I couldn't get get it to work and it kept crashing my computer. After about 10 minutes of this, I put the card back in the camera, reformatted it, and PRESTO! Works great, and with XP required no set up software. I can hardly believe something this useful is also so [inexpensive]. I guess they figure they'll make money selling bigger cards.

I loved the size and functionality of the product. The file transfer speed is not bad as I thought and it can support flash, SD and sony stick. Only drawback is the fact that plug and play is only for Windows XP and up. For Win 98 and 2000 one must install the driver.
