The Memory Stick PRO format was designed to realize continuous real-time recording of high capacity high-resolution moving images. In addition to its theoretical maximum transfer speed of 160Mbps, a main advantage of the Memory Stick PRO format is its minimum write speed of 15Mbps as a format standard, which will enable continuous real-time recording of high-resolution moving images. Furthermore, the minimum write speed of 15Mbps will make it possible to design more reliable moving image recording devices capable of preventing data loss in the event of sudden power loss or accidental removal of the media during file recording.The new format includes the MagicGate copyright protection technology as a standard feature providing secure protection for commercial and copyrighted content. By fully utilizing an embedded intelligent controller unit, the Memory Stick PRO format will also enable prevention of third-party access to personal data. Tentatively named "Access Control Function", the new protection technology will form the base of a high-level security system for Memory Stick networking features. Memory Sticks Are Ill Conceived.......2004-09-26

There are too many incompatibilities in the Memory Stick format. Sony obviously failed to properly plan and design the memory stick. After waiting over 2 years for them to brake the 128MB barrier (which they had promised) the new cards were incompatible with the old cameras. On some cards you can transfer MP3 music, on others you can't (some sort of Memory Stick police I guess). Some memory sizes will work on some equipment, but not others. Lots of other idiosynchrasies - like Duo, two 128MB in one, and other incompatibilities too confusing to keep track of. Sony should forget the Memory stick which it badly mangled and instead stick to compact flash and SD cards where compatibility is not as much of an issue.

Works as advertised, but some caveats.......2003-12-08

I picked this up for use with my recently purchased Sony digital camera, and it works great. Unfortunately almost all Sony products manufactured before 2003 cannot use these new high-capacity Memory Sticks.

Another sticking point is that only 460MB is usable on this stick, losing a whopping 52MB to the file system and Magic Gate overhead. I also own a 256MB version, and that has 220MB free.

Write speeds are noticeably faster compared to the older Memory Stick media, as well as read speeds in my USB 2.0 reader. Luckily the price has come down on these, and if your hardware can support it, these new Memory Sticks are worth picking up.

Don't waste your money!.......2003-08-25

This won't work in pre-2003 Sony devices, as Sony made a design mistake on original memory stick (and kept its consumers in dark). Neither would existing card readers work.

These sticks contain MagicGate protection. This means that you won't get even 488 MegaBytes of actual space from this 512 MillionBytes stick. MagicGate uses up significant space (40MB) and create all kinds of hassles in transfers of things like mp3's.

But wait that's not all, these sticks are kinda obsolete already. These won't work in any SonyEricsson cell phones or smaller Sony devices like Stick Walkman & newer U series Cybershot cameras.

If you want to invest in sticks buy a MS Duo Pro stick, the latest of half a dozen stick formats from Sony. (Soon most cell phones will have a slot for removable flash media) Or you can say no to all Sony devices and buy SD/MMC based gadgets to avoid all these hassles.

What is Sony thinking? Another Betamax?.......2003-05-09

Are you kidding me? I don't understand how Memory Stick Pro is not compatible with my current Sony products? The new cards are finally offering me the capacity I need but I can't use them without upgrading product!! Can you spell F-R-U-S-T-R-A-T-I-N-G!! Talk about getting left in the lurch. I have been a loyal Sony product buyer for years, but am thinking about making a switch. I did some research and it seems there are a lot more choices out there that support the same - if not more and better products - and the media capacity is just as good and works with all products available. I checked out a new Panasonic camera and a Palm that supports SD - I'm making the switch.

Don't think Memory Stick Pro format won't last if they keep this up.

Finally a Memory Stick Worth Money.......2003-04-30

I figure a 512MB stick replaces four 128MB memory sticks that sell for $70 dollars each. That is about $280. No brainer there. Get the large memory stick. I use this stick with my Sony F717 and I can finally take between 194-7500 pictures depending on the resolution I select. With digital cameras, storage is valuable. An added bonus is that the memory stick is quick. I notice a speed difference when writing to and reading from the memory stick pro vs. the regular memory stick. Very nice!

I purchased the Sony 512MB Memory Stick Pro Duo for my new Sony Cybershot DSC-W50. It works great! I can get over 150 pictures at 6 mega-pixels and up to 23 minutes of captured video. Not 512 MB?.......2006-04-01

For any who are confused about the fact that even though it is a 512 MB Memory Stick, but it says that it only has 470 MBish, that's because of the way companies use the term, "megabyte". The company making the stick considers a megabyte to be 1000 kilobytes, which are each 1000 bytes, so a megabyte is 1,000,000 megabytes. Thus, the capacity of the stick is 520,000,000 MBs. However, the PSP, and all other devices, consider 1MB=1024KB=1048576 bytes. So the 520,000,000 byte capacity of the stick is considered by the PSP to be just under 596 MBs. The rest of the space taken up is by stuff needed to make it work, but it's not ALL that, just "formatting". (Yes, the companies rip you off, deal with it)

Okay, this is a great memory stick. Since I used it for the psp I'll review it on that. If the 32, 132, or 256 mb memory sticks just aren't enough space for you, and you don't want to spend the extra cash on the 1 gig, then I suggest this one. Whatever people say, this works the same as the Sony brand. Plus, you're not going to spend 80 dollars like on the Sony one (which is rediculous). I actually think it's a little bit faster in transferring and loading on the psp. And for only 40 bucks on this site, how could you go wrong with it? Even if when you put this in the psp it's a little less than 512 mb, it has enough space. This can store plenty of mp3s, game saves, game cheats, video, homebrew, and photos. Don't listen to the people that say Sony is better. There's no difference in the performance of the two companies (Sony and SanDisk).
To the kid that didn't know how to put tv shows on his psp, I'll try to explain it my best. Whether you have them on dvd or are downloading them, they need to be mp4s. You can download numerous video converters to make video files mp4s. Just search google for 3GP Converter. You should find a decent one there. After making your video an mp4, you have to transfer it to the psp. After reformatting a psp (just go to the menu on psp and find "format memory stick") you connect your psp to the computer. Go to the disk that it's named as in "My Computer". You'll see that there is no video section but something called MP_ROOT. Open that and you'll see the folders 100ANV01 and 100MNV01. Open 100MNV01 and put you're mp4 of the tv show in there. Turn on your psp, go to video, and you're show will be right there.

Sony's HDR-HC7 Great Camera but menu driven.......2007-08-01

The camera package which I ordered came to me later than I expected but in two weeks which worked out fine. I liked both the Sony HDR-HC7 and the rest of the package I believe I got my money's worth after pricing pieces at my local Best Buy. I'm not crazy about the tripod but it works fine. The Camera is every thing I wanted it dose require some reading of the manual and some trial but you can do as much with this camera as a some of the professional Sony cameras you can record 16x9 or 4x3 at HDV 1080i record on Mini DV cassettes and playback, transfer footage to your computer and edit. There are manual controls which gives you a lot of choices, a built in spot meter, and a 6.1 mega pixel still camera with flash and memory stix, shutter control. Depending on how you would like to shoot there's an easy mode which makes it all automatic if your unsure. The pictures looks terrific and the steady shot works great, for such a small camera it has a lot to offer and it can complement a professional camera package.

HDR-HC7 Pro Camera features in a very small package........2007-04-16

I am so impressed by this camera I can hardly contain myself. It is absolutely loaded with features. The quality of the still shots is unbelievable. You can see every pore on a persons face. The Hi-def Video is breath taking and the color is so vivid it will blow your mind. You do not need the extra kits as the camera comes with all the cables that you need (4) for video transfer as well as still shot transfer I would get some filters if not just to protect the lense and the automatic lense cover from damage. It has more input and output jacks then any other camera. I have Sony HDR-FX1 and this camera is almost the same thing in a palm sized package. Hey look it is not an HDR-FX1 but it does not cost $3000 either. It is small and easy to carry around. You will not be disappointed. The menus are so friendly it will make you cry. There are actual illustrations of the cables and what they hook to. The menus have two modes EASY and ADVANCED. Oh did I forget the touch screen which makes the whole thing fast and easy. On EASY menu, the camera does everything for you. On advanced you can tweak everything to the max. I have only just looked at the night shot with built in infrared but it looks fantastic and I have not even tried the Super Night Shot mode. Built in pop-out flash variable level. Make sure to get an external battery charger such as the Sony BC-TRP and an extra "H" series battery as you will need it but the battery that comes with will last over an hour or more depending on you modes and usage. There are several batteries get the NPFH70 or NPFH100 these are higher capacity. Get them from LEGEND. This camera is so advanced you would swear it used alien technology. It also comes with easy to use basic software that will allow you to burn CDs as well as drivers for other apps like Vegas and Microsoft. I wish I had two more pages to tell you about it. I lugged the HDR-FX1 to Hawaii but not next time this is what is going. I like tape because it is the cheapest mediium and you loose nothing on resolution. If you go hard drive you have to carry a computer or external device to dump. With CD you have compression. If you use the bigger battery the eye piece telescopes out if you need it. One last thing it comes with remote control. It is the Mini HDR-FX1. You got to have some compromises in a package this small.
