I am a walker, not a runner, but I wanted a heart rate monitor to help make sure I'm walking fast enough to get an aerobic workout. It's hard to tell if you're walking fast enough without one. I also wanted it as a motivation tool. I'm very happy with it and it meets all my needs. I use it every day and am very happy I bought it!

It keeps track of multiple items in your workout session: length of time, your average heart rate, your lowest and highest heart rates, calorie counter.

I read through some of the other reviews people have posted and I don't know why they are having trouble getting readings. Maybe they have a faulty unit and should send it back. The chest strap is snug but not uncomfortable at all. I slightly dampen the two sensors as the manual suggests before I put it against my skin. Everything works like a charm. I find the fastening system very easy to use. It's not much different than a bra strap although it's even easier since the clasps are just left or right of center -- you can choose which one you want to use. The hard sensor piece is in the very front and only about 6 inches long or so. The strap is stretchy elastic and can be washed, which is a nice feature since you put it against your skin each time.

I did quite a bit of research before I decided to buy this HRM unit. There were a lot of choices out there. Some very expensive. I think most people would be happy with this unit. It's nice and sturdy -- from a brand you can trust (Timex). The watch is a little chunky for a woman to wear when not working out, but I think it's just fine for a workout setting. Most of the HRM watches are a little chunky because of all the electronics contained in that little watch. If you go to [...], you can see "women's" versions of this same watch that appear to be a little thinner and in more feminine colors. Amazon has sellers that carry these versions on occasion. You might want to do a search if you're wanting a watch you can wear all day.

Please note that this HRM unit is just the watch and the strap. I was confused when researching watches because some of them come with a speed and distance GPS unit that you wear on your arm. And those units cost a LOT more. At least $100 and often up to $300. You only need the GPS piece if you are interested in finding out things like: your pace, your average pace, your best pace. It measures your real-time speed and tracks your total distance. I'm not at the workout level that I need this information. I'm fine with knowing my time and making sure I'm keeping my heartrate in the target zone that will help me lose weight. You don't need the GPS version unless you are interested in the additional data features I just mentioned.

One other thing, the watch automatically comes set to beep if you are not within your heart rate zone. But you can turn off the beep and just monitor your heart rate visually on the watch. I found the beeping very annoying. During warm up and cool down you are not going to be in your target zone so of course it will beep. I couldn't find that there was a way you could temporarily silence the sound. I think you only have options of on or off. I just leave the beeping turned off and I'm very happy. I don't see that it's very useful, but maybe some people like it.

So, overall, I think it's a great product and I'm very happy with my purchase. Good luck with your decision making!

Simple yet plenty of features. Sensor reads and sends signals like a charm. When you compare all factors, it's the best value out there, at the very least, for those owning a first or second HRM. Highly recommended!

Excellent clock, but EYE the box indicates that it is of woman!.......2007-04-21

I received thsi watch yesterday, and I occurred with the surprise of which the box indicates that it is of woman, although the description in amazon does not indicate it.

In some webs indicates that he is unisex, the certain thing is that the body of the clock has the normal size, but the strap is a little thin. In any case I have the thin wrist, and one is not to me bad.

On the operation, the HR works OK, the chronometer of 30 laps has "a small" detail, you cannot see the lap in which you go, only the sample the first 10 seconds but soon disappears of the screen.

With respect to the other functions, everything is perfect, awesome function Night of indiglow, if it active, any thing to me that you do with the clock maintains ignited the screen, ideal for night training.

The clock is brilliant, enchants to me, except for the detail of which they did not indicate for woman, would put 5 stars to him. Another detail, the unions of the sensor seem to me very delicate, hopefully are not broken with the use.

I just bought this one for my girlfriend to keep her training, and Im glad to did it!
Easy to use, no dificult to set up and use, also no compatibility trouble qhen im running beside her. In fact, i was using a Oregon Scientific Vibra trainer fit (always more features, but frecuent errors while running).
Also, this one doesn`t have troubles with NIKE IPOD devices.

Delivers exactly what it advertises. Just barely larger than the women's ironman watch, it doesn't look clunky. Easy to set up the Max heart rate, and it automatically sets all the zones for you. Strap is very comfortable, and instructions are easy to read.

I liked this watch alot. It was very easy to program. The strap that goes around the chest is a bit uncomfortable for a woman thats well endowed. I still just use the watch for everyday ware. If you want to see your pulse i suggest you just take it manually.

I own this watch, the heart rate strap, and the data recorder. I use it for bicycling, cardio, and general working out. I love downloading the information from the data recorder to my computer to see how effective my workout was. It motivates me and keeps me going when I am tired or sore. It is a great incentive to keep pushing. Closely monitoring the effectiveness of my workouts helps to show progress, even when visually my appearance stays the same.

This watch has many useful features offered for a reasonable price.
I have used the stopwatch, timer, alarm and heart rate monitor. The hardest part was remembering which of the four buttons to use for what function. I would recommend this watch.

I've been using this HRM for over 2 years now. After losing the watch, and having an opportunity to try other brands/models, I decided to just get another Timex. Why? Of all the products I looked at, this one had the best set of features that were important to me for the price, and the small form factor allows me to wear it as a regular wristwatch without looking goofy.

Features I particularly like:
-5 standard + 1 custom heart rate zone w/ optional alarms
-30-lap memory w/ avg HR on each
-Calorie estimator (seems to be pretty accurate for running at least)

The only major downside is that the chest band needs a layer of moisture between it and the skin to register properly. Sometimes this takes up to 15 minutes in dry weather when I'm running, and sometimes it never works when I'm biking, especially on a cool, breezy day. If you attempt to get a reading before the band is ready, it will display '240' and this of course will render the max HR and calorie functions useless for that workout.

Great when it works, BUT...........2007-01-05

I bought this because it had all the functionality I wanted AND cool sporty style to wear casually. This is my second Timex watch. I thought it was just me, but now I realize that these watches just aren't well made. The first watch was great until after 6 mos. the chest strap began to malfunction. The other comments are correct in that there are times i would look at my Heart Rate and it would reflect a figure that was totally incorrect. The second watch same thing AND one of the loops on the wrist band mysteriously broke off and disapeared. I ran a marathon clipping the band to the wrist so that the watch wouldn't fall off. Unfortunately, i'm gonna have to buy my 3rd heart rate monitor in a 1 yr timeframe and it won't be this one...

It did work for three days... After that I never got a reading from the belt. I changed the battery twice just to try everything.

Great while it lasted.......2007-04-01

I had this Timex for about four years, during which I used it on all my runs. The functionality was awesome, and not only did having a heart rate monitor add a new dimension to my running and increase my motivation, but it also made me more cognizant of the need to monitor my peak heart rate.

The chest strap unit worked perfectly throughout and there was never any noticeable wear and tear.

However, the watch itself was a bit less satisfactory. The design was user-friendly and good-looking, but I had three problems:
1) there is a thin rubber surround on the display that worked itself off. This was a purely cosmetic problem, and while it made my watch less appealing to wear, it never affected its performance.
2) The buttons became hard to the point of becoming almost dysfunctional after the third year or so. However, they had been recently improving.
3) The strap, which is an integral part of the watch, became detached one day, so I can no longer wear my watch on my wrist. This is why I no longer use it.

While it lasted, I used my Timex as a watch every day for four years, and as a Heart Rate Monitor for all my runs. The Time Zone feature helped me learn how to pace my runs and I increased my maximum distance from 5k to 12.5k in this time. All in all, I was very satisfied, and heart-broken that the strap would break. I liked it so much I'm thinking of buying another one, which is what brought me to Amazon in the first place today...

Great Way To Track Your Progress.......2007-03-24

Replete with lots of data and enough bells and whistles to launch a space shuttle, it was a little intimidating at first getting it set up. Despite having read all 3 manuals several times, I was still a little confused on a couple of points. That's when I called the people at Timex. They walked me through all of my questions and showed me how to make it do what I wanted. They were helpful, prompt and very efficient. Now I use it whenever I workout and find it to be an absolutely invaluable tool. It keeps track of my heartrate and elapsed time during the workout. At the end of the workout, it displays peak heart rate, average heart rate, time in zone (there are several user selectable zones) and total calories burned. Since I use different machines every time I workout, the machine read out varies much more widely. The Ironman allows me to keep much better track of my actual progress. The Ironman has been essential in my quest to loose weight. I've been using it for 5 weeks and I've lost 8.5 pounds. You'll love using it once you get it set up and you'll wonder what you ever did without it. Well, that's all for now. Time to put another hour in on the eliptical...Enjoy!!!

the watch features are great, but I could not get it to read my heart rate. I have contacted Timex and they have sent me another watch, still no heart rate. Now they are sendind me another chest strap, this is two weeks after I purchased it. I don't think tha I shoudl be having this many problems with a new product. havein said that the customer service is great and they offer a cheap 5 year warranty for an additional $5. If the new strap does not work I am going to buy a Polar RS 100

This is my second Timex heart rate monitor and I would never buy anything else. I've experimented with Polars and was highly disappointed. This watch fits nicely and I recommend the black color so that dirt doesn't change the color. I wear it all day and then throw on the chest strap when exercising. I love checking how many calories I have burned and its easy to use. I highly recommend this heart rate monitor!!

As others have noted, this clock radio does *not* have the 7/5/2-day programming option, which was critical to me.

J&R was nice about the return but they wouldn't credit my shipping because they say they aren't responsible for descriptions on Amazon. (I checked and the J&R description of this clock radio is correct - no claim about the non-existent "feature.")

So in the end I was out the time and money for shipping. But I do really like the Sangean RCR-22 I got as a substitute!

Stopped working after 1 year.......2007-07-19

I received this alarm clock for a gift and at first really enjoyed it and waking to the Natural sounds. However, after only a year, an internal LED started flickering - very annoying at night - and then the digits on the display started disappearing. It progressed to where you could not turn off the alarm nor snooze it. I am disappointed that a $70 clock wouldn't last for more than a year.

Timex T617S Clock Radio.......2007-07-13

I like the physical appearance of the unit as alo the control buttons, but, am very disappointed in the sound quality, and forget the nature sounds. Both the AM and FM bands come through very "tinny", totally unlike the sound I was receiving on my Sony Dream Machine - clear, deep and robust - which gave up after being used for 17 yrs. The Timex T617S was more affordable but not worth the savings. Maybe I am just too choosy.

This is not a cheap plastic pedometer with a clip that will crack off easily. This pedometer is very light & sleek, unlike some I've had that were rather bulky. There is a nice large number display, easy to read. I figured a Timex would be a good brand for a pedometer. I am very satisfied.

I've had this heart rate monitor for about 8 months now and if it's not for the fact that I'm cheap, I would've tossed it long time ago. The watch itself looks okay, the band is plastic and cheap looking. The main complaint that I have about this watch is the heart rate monitor reliability. More time than not, my heart rate can't be picked up. I've tried every trick in the book, but still have trouble with it. Everytime I put it on, I have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that it will pick up my heart rate, but most of the time it doesn't. When it does work, very occasionally, the heart rate is pretty accurate.

Just save up some more money and buy a Polar to avoid all this hassel.

Haveing had my original expedition for over 10 years.I am quite pleased with my new timex.My first expedition was worn every day to work (construction) and on many ventures into the Arizona desert,UNSTOPPABLE ! My new expedition is a bit larger and the band is more comfortable.Numbers larger and easer to read.It is more comfortable and the compass is RIGHT on.I'm sure in the near future the face will get beat up and it won't look as pretty.That will just give it the look it needs.I think it's a great watch.I can't say enough good things about this watch

The differentiating feature of this watch is the compass function. It simply does not work - not even close. In addition the watchband poorly designed - very uncomfortable and difficult to use.

Great watch for the outdoors.......2007-07-12

This has proven to be a decent and reliable watch for the outdoors, where a nicer luxury watch isn't worth risking. The durability is excellent and, once the declination is set, the compass is accurate and easily used. The only thing I don't like is that it has a very large watch face and feels a bit clunky.

I searched watches up to ~$600. I wanted some specific features (all of which I still haven't found in a single watch). I use my watch in my work. I carry a spare much of the time. I bought this watch as a spare (At the price, it's not much of a gamble). I have been using it for about 6 weeks, and I may try it as my primary watch. So, now you know. Time - Accurate; Night light - could be a little brighter but ok; Night light 3 second feature - nice - punch the light up feature like the book says and u get a light for 3 seconds instead of just 1; Compass - let's not think fancy for a <$40 watch. It is accurate enough for most general tasks if you can do declination in your head. I like the countdown feature. Watch face is not too big. Alarm - I don't hear it (I'm close to legally deaf), but it wakes up my wife who is a sound sleeper. Band is good quality and functional, but it may be annoyingly short if you have big wrists. Why the 4 of 5? The watch is not shockproof. Why make a watch that's called "Expedition" and not make it shockproof and waterproof (instead of water resistant to 100 m)? My previous experience - shock or water will get you somewhere down the road, but like I say, it's less than $40. I hope this helped.

Good inexpensive watch.......2007-05-26

I've had this watch for a month or so and found it to be quite comfortable and everything works as advertised. The compass is fun to play with. The only con is that the wrist strap is a little short and just barely fits around my wrist (for whatever the average wrist size of someone a little over 6' might be). The display is very clear and easy to read even with my poor eyesight.
