4 out of 5 stars Excellent Print Server, Need to understand networking.......2007-08-29

This print server works great. I had a little bit of a hard time setting it up since I am new to networking. Once I got it set up correctly, have had no failures connecting to it and printing through a Linksys network switch or through a wireless access point connected through the network switch. It has been a great solution rather than buying two printers for my two computers.

2 out of 5 stars Make sure of compatibility.......2007-08-04

Before you buy this, go to D-Link's website and ensure compatibility. If it isn't there, you're buying a dog. This might be a very good print server, but didn't make my Lexmark printer budge.

Customer support takes a long time also.

4 out of 5 stars Very good product.......2007-07-31

Not quite as easy to setup as the box would imply, but a good product.

5 out of 5 stars Great Wireless Router for Home or Office.......2007-07-03

This router has great wireless performance and range. I live in a 5000 sq. ft. home and the router is in the basement, yet I get excellent signal quality throughout the house.

It is also easy to setup while having every conceivable option for configuring the security and accessibility of the LAN.

4 out of 5 stars only initial problem in setup was my firewall.......2007-06-23

I had read alot of reviews on various websites and found that I was fairly well armed in terms of troubleshooting, but had no real problems in connecting to the web interface (just change the ip of one of your pc's to match the default ip of the unit-like the directions say) and when I changed the ip setting on the unit to "assign automatically" to match my network config, it was a little challenging to log back into the interface (after changing my pc's setting back to assign ip automatically) cuz I had to start at the first ip in our router's range and keep entering each next ip until I got to the one that had been assigned to the unit by my router but luckily it was the third ip i tried. after that it was pretty easy to config the unit and install the printer on my xp, but for my 2000 I had to add the ip of the unit to my trusted zone on my firewall before it would work. If I had any tips for anyone, I would say to open the pdf manual for the unit and keep it alongside the quickstart directions as it has more helpful detail. Just finished installing it and haven't put much traffic through it yet, but so far so good.

Product Description

Connect up to 3 Printers to your wireless LAN with Hawking Technologies HWPS12UG Print Server! The Hawking HWPS12UG 2 USB + 1 Parallel port 10/100 Wireless Print Server is a powerful and convenient tool to connect your USB and parallel printers to your existing wireless 802.11b or 802.11g network. Through its enhanced functionality, the HWPS12UG can support up to three printers at one time (2 USB + 1 Parallel). The Hawking HWPS12UG combined with the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) lets you easily connect to any printer and print documents by specifying the print server's IP address. With IPP technology, printing over a WAN or the Internet becomes much easier. You can send a print job to a printer in another country just as easily as sending a print job to your home or office printer. IPP eliminates the need for fax communications between offices. Simply print an original document through the HWPS12UG's IPP capabilities and send it from one office to another. The print quality from IPP printing is equal to that of a document printed from your local office. With the HWPS12UG, your printers become a fully functional networked print station.

4 out of 5 stars works with assistance.......2007-05-09

Didn't work as described in instructions. After speaking to tech support for about 5 minutes was printing. Had to configure the port with the IP address of the printer. Now it works flawlessly. An adendum should be included in the instructions or on a website to describe how to configure the port for printing.

3 out of 5 stars 5 stars for linux users.......2006-09-14

Yep, it's unlikely windows users will consider this product a winner, but for penguinistas saying "hasta la vista" to the stuff from Redmond , this wireless print server is the way to go. Out of the box things are not promising, Hawking decided not to supply mine with an antennae. Could have sent it back but solved the problem with an expensive but stonking big linksys 7dBi mast that seems to work fine.

The quick install guide states categorically that you can configure it by connecting it via ethernet cable to your network. The only way I could talk to it was by connecting directly from pc to the unit - even then the only way the pc would see it is by rebooting the pc while the unit was connected and powered up.

Next problem for dedicated windows users is the winders setup wizard is quite broken. Even the latest versions and the lastest firmware do not help. If you want to setup standard MS printing, I forsee serious cogitations on the horizon! The Hawking websight is excellent and locating support downloads simple. The regular print server manager manager works fine and one just has to figure how to manually configure the thing without having ones trembling paw guided by the "wizard". It detected my lexmark e232 immediatly and ipp printing was quickly enabled. For linux you really only have to access the unit to fiddle with the wep and set a static ip address. All you need to know about ipp setup is in the quick guide and it's so simple to configure it makes you wonder why anyone bothers with anything else. The unit comes with IPP switched on by default so once you have an ip you are ready to do wireless printing in linux. In KDE Print choose an lpd queue - that's right skip the ipp queues! Works great with Mepis.

1 out of 5 stars Not compatible with many printers.......2006-04-14

I bought this device and there is nothing in the documentation or easily available on the web site that tells the customer that only certain printers are supported. After trying to make the device work for several hours, I sent an email to tech support who sent back an incompatible list of printers. Most of Multi-function All-in-one printers will not work at all. On top of that, just about all the top brands have printers that do not work. This includes HP, Epson, Canon, Dell, Okidata, etc. While I can understand compatibility issues - these should be explained in detail up front on the web site and on the packaging. Do not buy this device until you can assure yourself that your printers will work.

3 out of 5 stars Wireless range a little lacking.......2006-03-25

This hardware seemed ideal for me since I have three printers: an HP LJ1100 using the parallel port, and two USB-connected dye sublimation printers used for photo printing. Also it can use the internet printing protocol, useful since I mostly run my computer on Debian Linux. I had no trouble setting the device up to work under both Windows 2kPro and Linux, using the ipp printing protocol (with CUPS on the Linux side). Perhaps the docs could stand some improvement, but as long as you don't expect spoon feeding and are prepared to think a little, they are quite adequate to set the server up. You should set the printserver up with a static IP address so your printer configurations stay the same.

The main problem I have with the unit is range (unlike a previous reviewer). My wireless router is downstairs in my house, where the TV cable connnection comes in. My desktop computer is in a room directly above the router, and I've had no connection issues such as dropped packets (my router is a Netgear 802.11g), either with Windows 2000 or Linux. The idea of getting the printserver was to move three (two of them bulky) printers off my desk and into the walk-in closet across the hall. This places one more sheetrock covered wall between the router and the printserver. I had all kind of issues with printing (incomplete pages, printer errors) until I placed the printserver in the doorway so that the wall is no longer in the way. Now I can ping it and reliably get no dropped packets, although occasionally a page will come out incomplete (could be the CUPS driver's fault).

I still have a little experimenting to do - perhaps there is somewhere I can locate the printserver so it is out of the way and still catches all the packets, but at least it works. Or I could spend another $30 for a supplementary antenna. And I still need to work with the smallest printer (a HiTi 630PL) which hasn't worked properly through the server. But it only has a small footprint so that it isn't a pressing problem.

So overall I'm a happy camper - I can print, and I have more room on my desk to put stuff.

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy this product! Try this one instead: Apple's Airport Extreme.......2006-01-01

I gave the HWPS12UG hours and hours (actually days) of my time over the past year trying to make it work. I called their tech support several times. It seems they have just one guy working there because I always got him and he was always condescending though he couldn't figure out how to make the thing work. They exchanged the old one, sent me a new one and still couldn't make it work. My father figured out how to install it by playing with IP addresses etc. but when I tried to add a new printer, it threw everything off again.

I finally switched to Apple's AirportExtreme and had my windows computers and iMac's printing to an old Ethernet printer and a new USB printer in seconds using Apple's free bonjour software. I can't believe I wasted so much of my time being frustrated with this Hawkings product that simply is not ready for primetime!

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time & money.......2007-01-13

Simply does not work.

Time out regularly with my HP1100 laser printer. May print half of a page 3 or 4 times before it finally prints the whole thing. Often have to print documents page by page.

Does not work at all with my canon i560 - just won't see that it is there.

1 out of 5 stars It's true - it's junk.......2006-12-13

The installation software is useless. I can plug the unit straight into my PC or into a hub and the software still doesn't find the printer server. Call tech support wait a half a hour and finally get the thing up and running... (Tech support does seem VERY well versed in getting the thing up and running. I've called a lot, I know.) Within 2 days, the print server stopped working. It functioned intermittantly with a lot of fiddling for several months. Now it appears dead. Buy something else -- anyone have a recommendation?!?

1 out of 5 stars Do not buy the HPS12U!.......2006-03-22

I am returning my unit as defective.

Setup is outdated, and outdated units (version 1) are still being sold as new. FlashROM (v1.35) updates will not solve static IP instabilities, and failure to identify printers, regardless of the printer manufacturer - (Epson, HP, Samsung, etc) all failed at one point or another. Manual and on-line help are not that much help and the support online is not properly populated.

1 out of 5 stars Junk!.......2006-01-17

Avoid this product. The print server is incompatible with Canon printers ("except one" according to tech support). Hawking does not publish a list of compatible printers. You simply have to wrestle with things until you are frustrated enough to call tech support who will inform you that the printer is not compatible. The configuration software is buggy, documentation is poor, and product testing seems thin. As an indicator, there are misspellings in the utility software. One dialog was title "Warnning". Junk!

1 out of 5 stars An Attractive Doorstop.......2005-11-26

Does not work with my Canon i960, despite hours of configuration attempts. Following the instructions Tech Support emailed me three days after I reported the problem did not work. The Tech Support number provides access to a perpetual busy signal. Why won't Hawking Technologies simply publish the list of compatible printers?

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Poor product, so so tech support.......2007-06-07

Installation is a bit of a pain. The installation program doesn't work under Vista. There is a stripped down version for Vista on their website.

After installation, I couldn't get the thing to print more than a couple of lines of a test page. Tried using a laptop running XP and a desktop running Vista. Tried two different printers, 1 USB & 1 parallel.

The Tech support person was very difficult to understand, but tried to be helpful. The support person pretty much parroted the instructions in the box/website.

5 out of 5 stars Only one on the market.......2007-05-22

I use with the IPP (Internet Printing Protocol). Easy to setup and works as described.

4 out of 5 stars Finally got it working--here's how!.......2004-04-08

I gave this item 2 stars (one for the potential greatness of it) above, but I couldn't get it working. I was trying to use it with a Mac network and I couldn't get an IP address assigned to the printserver. All the methods the Tech Support and the web and the (horrible) documentation gave me didn't work. Well, I spoke with Tech Support again today and he suggested using the default IP address assigned to the printserver. It was 192.168.2.1

This worked! All I had to do was enter this IP address in my browser and it took me to the page which could configure the printserver so that its IP address would work on my network. I changed the IP address via the browser SetupWIzard option to something similar to the IP address for my ethernet (both of these were adjusted to be similar to my Airport IP address, since I was going to use this with the Airport to print wirelessly). After fussing a little more with the settings (airport has to have appletalk deselected in its prefs, for example), I am now printing happily.

I stuck with this and devoted HOURS to trying to get this to work bcs there really is nothing like it on the market. One parallel port, 2 USB ports--and for a great price! Also it is small and nice-looking.

If anyone needs more detailed info on how to set this up with MacOSX and Airport Extreme, check the Apple discussion boards under
OSX>OS 10.3 Panther>Using Technologies>Networking and the Web.

I think it was worth the effort--but ask me in a few weeks, when all of this hair-pulling struggle has faded a bit in memory.

2 out of 5 stars Would be great if it worked!.......2004-04-07

I bought this print server to use with my macintosh system. The box said it was compatible with OSX. Well--many hours and several calls to tech support and a visit to CompUSA's Apple Store later, the thing still doesn't work. The documentation is in a word, scanty. The instructions for Mac users presume a knowledge base which is not common in the average Mac user. I spent two hours at the CompUSA Apple store working with the Apple professional trying to get the thing to work. The setup requires typing into the Unix terminal--not something most Mac users feel comfortable with. Even the Hawking tech support guy said my unit must be broken--but another unit we opened at CompUSA didn't work either. So...I will probably return this item, although I really don't want to--there isn't anything else like it on the market. That's why I give it two stars instead of one--because apparently some people have gotten it to work, and it is a nicely priced, unique bit of hardware. Sigh.

4 out of 5 stars No problems - a great solution for Home Office.......2004-02-05

With trepidation I bought this print server after reading the numerous bad reviews. Call me crazy - but I was willing to take the risk because I could not find a comparable offering to fit my needs.
Like most people I have acquired a rather nice collection of printers: true laser b/w, high-end multi-function & a high-end photo printer (all of these are HP printers) I also have the need to provide access to multiple users in the household. I searched high and low and this was the only 3 printer print server I could find that mixed USB with the Parallel Port.
I consider myself technology competent - but certainly not savvy. It's true the manual is not the most intuitive - but after downloading the latest version of the drivers and firmware from the website - installation was a breeze for all 3 printers for multiple computers.
I had no problems with bi-directional communication - no problems even supporting the Multi-Function printer.
I have it attached to a 10/100 Switch (not hub) and all my systems are running XP (some home ver and some professional ver).
Can't attest for customer support - because I didn't need to call.
Just wanted to add a rare positive review for this product.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this printer server.......2006-04-19

This print server is junk. It doesn't support multifunction printers, the on-line help is non-existent, the manual is useless, the options aren't adequate on the admin interface. Basically it doesn't work. Support said there's no option to make it work. And they don't have a replacement model that will.

2 out of 5 stars Did not work with all printers.......2005-01-03

Did not work with Brother laser but still worked with UPS Thermal printer. Professional networking service could not even get this to work properly. No support.

1 out of 5 stars no MAC support.......2004-04-12

I had trouble getting this to work with my Apple G4. I called for tech support and he had nothing to say to me as a Mac user and displayed no interest in helping me. Basically, although it says that it is compatible with MAC OS, if you are not familiar with print servers and need help, you are out of luck.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2004-03-23

Relatively easy setup...BUT, very limited bidirectional compatability. Does not work well with multifunction printers. Either have to do a "cancel" to print or with a mutifunction printer with a fax, always shows the device as busy and cannot print at all.

4 out of 5 stars Easy setup and support multiple printers.......2004-03-17

It was easy to setup this print server on a Windows 95 desktop and a Windows XP laptop. I have two printers attached; one laser printer connected via a parallel cable and a color inkjet (multi-function) printer connected via an USB cable. They work great except bi-directional functions (no ink status info).

Need to connect directly to the multi-function printer to use the scanner function. Functions that need true bi-directional will not work through this print server.
