Not compatible and not returnable.......2007-08-08
After purchasing this item I discovered it was not compatible with the WPA encryption on my wireless network. But since I had opened the box, the seller refused to accept a return. Make sure you do your research and confirm that this adapter will work for you.
A real bargain.......2007-06-08
Sensitivity is great. This USB 802.11g adapter is regularly able to pick up 4 to 6 times as many nearby APs as any of my PCMCIA based WLAN adapters, and in 3 weeks has never dropped my link, to my knowlege. With Windows in control of it there are almost no config options available. But so far I find no fine tuning needed. The worst thing I can say about this adapter is that it is a little too small and light--the normal springyness of the USB cable makes it unlikely to sit flat on any surface without velcro, and difficult to "aim". But for the trivial price, it's a real bargain.
Never Lets Me Down.......2007-05-15
I have an company computer that I use to connect to my employer's VPN. I had been using a Netgear USB wireless adapter, but it would regurlarly dosconnect me from the VPN, and I would have to log on again. I don't know why it did this, but it was a pain. The Netgear adapter would also get very hot, and I would have to disconnect it from the computer. My D-Link G120 never knocks me off the VPN. It's great! I work in an upstairs bedroom, and my cable modem and wireless connection are downstairs and 40 feet away, and the G120 reception is fine. I've learned my lesson and will stay with D-Link.
Not a good product.......2007-05-13
This wireless adapter didn't have good signal strength at 25' though I have a new router. Replaced this adapter with a TrendNet adapter (TEW424UB) and getting full strength all the time.
Used with TIVO.......2007-05-09
I've had some problems getting a wireless adapter that works with my older TIVO (series 1?). This one in the 802.11b version worked...but then I gave it to a friend. This 802.11g version also works fine.
Product Description
Connect up to 3 Printers to your wireless LAN with Hawking Technologies HWPS12UG Print Server! The Hawking HWPS12UG 2 USB + 1 Parallel port 10/100 Wireless Print Server is a powerful and convenient tool to connect your USB and parallel printers to your existing wireless 802.11b or 802.11g network. Through its enhanced functionality, the HWPS12UG can support up to three printers at one time (2 USB + 1 Parallel). The Hawking HWPS12UG combined with the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) lets you easily connect to any printer and print documents by specifying the print server's IP address. With IPP technology, printing over a WAN or the Internet becomes much easier. You can send a print job to a printer in another country just as easily as sending a print job to your home or office printer. IPP eliminates the need for fax communications between offices. Simply print an original document through the HWPS12UG's IPP capabilities and send it from one office to another. The print quality from IPP printing is equal to that of a document printed from your local office. With the HWPS12UG, your printers become a fully functional networked print station.
Customer Reviews:
works with assistance.......2007-05-09
Didn't work as described in instructions. After speaking to tech support for about 5 minutes was printing. Had to configure the port with the IP address of the printer. Now it works flawlessly. An adendum should be included in the instructions or on a website to describe how to configure the port for printing.
5 stars for linux users.......2006-09-14
Yep, it's unlikely windows users will consider this product a winner, but for penguinistas saying "hasta la vista" to the stuff from Redmond , this wireless print server is the way to go. Out of the box things are not promising, Hawking decided not to supply mine with an antennae. Could have sent it back but solved the problem with an expensive but stonking big linksys 7dBi mast that seems to work fine.
The quick install guide states categorically that you can configure it by connecting it via ethernet cable to your network. The only way I could talk to it was by connecting directly from pc to the unit - even then the only way the pc would see it is by rebooting the pc while the unit was connected and powered up.
Next problem for dedicated windows users is the winders setup wizard is quite broken. Even the latest versions and the lastest firmware do not help. If you want to setup standard MS printing, I forsee serious cogitations on the horizon! The Hawking websight is excellent and locating support downloads simple. The regular print server manager manager works fine and one just has to figure how to manually configure the thing without having ones trembling paw guided by the "wizard". It detected my lexmark e232 immediatly and ipp printing was quickly enabled. For linux you really only have to access the unit to fiddle with the wep and set a static ip address. All you need to know about ipp setup is in the quick guide and it's so simple to configure it makes you wonder why anyone bothers with anything else. The unit comes with IPP switched on by default so once you have an ip you are ready to do wireless printing in linux. In KDE Print choose an lpd queue - that's right skip the ipp queues! Works great with Mepis.
Not compatible with many printers.......2006-04-14
I bought this device and there is nothing in the documentation or easily available on the web site that tells the customer that only certain printers are supported. After trying to make the device work for several hours, I sent an email to tech support who sent back an incompatible list of printers. Most of Multi-function All-in-one printers will not work at all. On top of that, just about all the top brands have printers that do not work. This includes HP, Epson, Canon, Dell, Okidata, etc. While I can understand compatibility issues - these should be explained in detail up front on the web site and on the packaging. Do not buy this device until you can assure yourself that your printers will work.
Wireless range a little lacking.......2006-03-25
This hardware seemed ideal for me since I have three printers: an HP LJ1100 using the parallel port, and two USB-connected dye sublimation printers used for photo printing. Also it can use the internet printing protocol, useful since I mostly run my computer on Debian Linux. I had no trouble setting the device up to work under both Windows 2kPro and Linux, using the ipp printing protocol (with CUPS on the Linux side). Perhaps the docs could stand some improvement, but as long as you don't expect spoon feeding and are prepared to think a little, they are quite adequate to set the server up. You should set the printserver up with a static IP address so your printer configurations stay the same.
The main problem I have with the unit is range (unlike a previous reviewer). My wireless router is downstairs in my house, where the TV cable connnection comes in. My desktop computer is in a room directly above the router, and I've had no connection issues such as dropped packets (my router is a Netgear 802.11g), either with Windows 2000 or Linux. The idea of getting the printserver was to move three (two of them bulky) printers off my desk and into the walk-in closet across the hall. This places one more sheetrock covered wall between the router and the printserver. I had all kind of issues with printing (incomplete pages, printer errors) until I placed the printserver in the doorway so that the wall is no longer in the way. Now I can ping it and reliably get no dropped packets, although occasionally a page will come out incomplete (could be the CUPS driver's fault).
I still have a little experimenting to do - perhaps there is somewhere I can locate the printserver so it is out of the way and still catches all the packets, but at least it works. Or I could spend another $30 for a supplementary antenna. And I still need to work with the smallest printer (a HiTi 630PL) which hasn't worked properly through the server. But it only has a small footprint so that it isn't a pressing problem.
So overall I'm a happy camper - I can print, and I have more room on my desk to put stuff.
Do not buy this product! Try this one instead: Apple's Airport Extreme.......2006-01-01
I gave the HWPS12UG hours and hours (actually days) of my time over the past year trying to make it work. I called their tech support several times. It seems they have just one guy working there because I always got him and he was always condescending though he couldn't figure out how to make the thing work. They exchanged the old one, sent me a new one and still couldn't make it work. My father figured out how to install it by playing with IP addresses etc. but when I tried to add a new printer, it threw everything off again.
I finally switched to Apple's AirportExtreme and had my windows computers and iMac's printing to an old Ethernet printer and a new USB printer in seconds using Apple's free bonjour software. I can't believe I wasted so much of my time being frustrated with this Hawkings product that simply is not ready for primetime!

Customer Reviews:
Don't Buy It.......2007-02-20
This is a cool idea and the Make It Work guy installed it. It worked great for about 3 hours. For some unknown reason, it just stopped allowing me to connect to the internet. The more troubleshooting, the worse it got. By the end of the day after uninstalling, reinstalling, doing system restores, etc., it still didn't work. In fact, my computer stopped recognizing the device. To make matters worse, I was overcharged by double the Amazon price. (At least this is a good price on Amazon.) It is just not worth the trouble and a whole day of trying to fix it.
Garbage.......2006-06-19
I purchased this wireless USB adapter a few months ago.
The first unit i received was non operational.
The replacement worked for a little over 6 months, before it started dropping connections to my Linksys router sitting less than 30 feet away on the same floor and it just stopped detecting all networks, no matter what i did.
Do not bother buying this piece of garbage, there are plenty of other USB wireless adapters that i am sure are far better.

Customer Reviews:
prints garbage or blank pages.......2007-04-30
I purchased this pint server for an onsite office that is totally wireless (wireless desktops - wasn't my decision for them to be wireless, but that's beside the point).
In any case, installation wasn't difficult. However, the office has called me on two separate occasions to tell me their printer is now printing garbled code or blank pages. It might print a couple of good pages followed by bad pages. It's not a driver issue as they are using the same driver they used when their printer was hooked up to one of their desktops.
I called tech support which has been outsourced to India by the way, and they were not of much help. Told me to reboot the computer and the print server.
I'm going to call again and ask for level 2 support. It's possible that this print server is not compatible with their printer..not sure.
I'm giving this 2 stars only because it was easy to set up. But that's it. Piece of garbage.
It works!.......2007-03-12
I bought another wireless print server and it was the darnedest thing. It wouldn't work for me. The Hawking was much easier set up and less expensive then the rest of them. I haven't used the it wireless, yet, but it works just fine hooked up to a router. I would recommend this for anyone!
Not all printers supported.......2007-02-13
While one of my printers does work with this device the printer that I purchased this device for does NOT work with it. I sent a note to support asking for help but to-date have had no reply.
my unit worked, but required patience and a bit of know-how.......2007-01-15
I found the setup for this print server to be very finicky. However, if your unit is functional and your printer is compatible, the product does indeed do what it's designed to do.
These add-on IP products are really ill-suited for the consumer retail space, as there are too many variables to ensure plug and play, trouble-free installation. If you don't know how to make changes to your router's LAN gateway and DHCP settings (among other things), stay away from this or any add-on print server. Save yourself a massive headache and hours of frustration and buy a router with a built-in print server (and just live with the inconvenience of situating the printer near the router).
If you're still reading and know what you're doing, here's a handful of tips (assuming you've made the necessary gateway and DHCP changes to your router first):
1) Make sure that your router's SSID is being broadcast during the print server installation. During the setup's site survey, the print server seems to think that a non-broadcast SSID is the same as a blank SSID; and when it looks for your router for the first time post-setup, it will be expecting to find a blank SSID (even though you might have entered in manually the SSID). Strangely, however, it seems that you can disable the broadcasting of the router's SSID after installation, because now the print server seems to be looking for a router with a hidden SSID.
2) If you've done #1, and you still can't see your router during the setup utility site survey, ignore the site survey result and just manually enter the SSID and channel number into the utility. Even though my router didn't show up in the site survey results, the print server worked after I input the info manually.
3) If you just can't seem to get the setup utility to work, try getting into the print server via your web browser and use IPP to install the printer as a networked IP printer.
4) If possible, keep the printer/server combo well within range of your wireless router. This thing HATES interference or a weak signal, and seems get thrown offline easily under poor wireless conditions.
5) If your wireless setup just won't work, the print server makes a perfectly fine, if expensive, wired print server.
6) Ditto to the other negative comments on the poor documentation, but here's an added frustration: Hawking's support page for this product does not include a download for the Installation Guide or the User's Manual, SO DON'T LOSE THESE ITEMS. Even though the documentation isn't great, it does include vital info on the defaults settings. When your print server requires the inevitable hard reset, and you neither kept the manuals nor wrote down your setup info, you will cry like a baby.
Unit Works But Install Software is Weak.......2007-01-12
The unit does work. On Windows XP the install software will set up the print driver on the network, but often won't recognize that a USB printer is plugged in and subsequently refuses to let you load a printer driver to the device, e.g. Canon printers. You can get around this by trying to open the print server printer port directly from the Windows network. Windows will recognize that no printer driver is loaded on the print server and ask you if you want to load a driver. You may also have to create a Standard TCP/IP Port to use with your printer
<> print server connection. Nothing about any of this in the documentation. Web site tech support for this unit does not exist. Email tech support turn around is usually within 24 hours. Don't buy this unit if you don't want to play around getting it installed. On the other hand, this unit can be found at some very low prices right now. Its a trade off.

Good Adapter.......2007-07-24
The adapter was easy to install and worked well, but was limited to a PC upstairs directly over my Belkin N1 router. It would not function on the opposite side of the house approximately 40 feet distance from the present location. I am satisfied with the results.
WUA-1340 ... works good.......2006-07-26
Bought this D-Link WUA-1340 at Best Buy for $39.99
(to replace a Belkin F5D7050 which simply had too many annoying quirks)
So far the WUA-1340 is working fine. It was easy to install, works well with Windows Zero Configuration, and has a heavier base cradle. Also works with my older USB 1.1 machines with no issues.
