Amazon.com Review

The feature-rich Sony DSC-S75 digital camera presents a very plausible replacement for a traditional 35mm film camera. It features a 3.3-megapixel CCD, a superb Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 3x optical zoom lens, 2x digital zoom (for a 6x total zoom), and other extras such as movie mode and voice recording for annotations.

The DSC-S75 is larger than most of Sony's other Cyber-shot cameras, but it's nicely weighted and benefits from the rubber grip to the left of the lens. The DSC-S75 shares many features with the Sony MVC-CD300, including a variety of modes, such as simultaneous recording of both TIFF and JPEG images, a voice mode that records an audio file of between 5 and 40 seconds together with the still image, and the ability to record both short MPEG movies with sound and animated GIFs. However, unlike the MVC-CD300, the DSC-S75 has only a two-image burst mode and no exposure bracketing feature.

Sony has added some useful features for reviewing and editing images on the camera before they have been uploaded, including a 5x LCD zoom, a slideshow feature, and the ability to enlarge and trim images. You can also divide MPEG movies into two separate files. The DSC-S75 also records the exposure, shutter speed, and aperture setting of each image for later reference.

Playback of images is either via TV by use of supplied AV cable, through a Memory Stick reader (such as the Sony MSACUS1A), or by attaching the camera to the PC via the supplied USB cable. In this last case, the camera is mounted as a new drive on your Mac or PC's desktop, allowing easy transfer of images to the hard drive.

The camera is supplied with an AC adaptor, rechargeable battery pack, 8 MB Memory Stick, AV connecting cable, shoulder strap, a rather short USB cable, and software on CD-ROM. --Nick Baxter

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S75 builds upon the robust DSC-S70 with a number of significant improvements. Enhancements include a new jog dial for camera settings, faster autofocus, more metal in the body, a further centralized lens position, a larger hand grip with thicker rubber, and a superior menu system. This is also Sony's first camera ever to have a 14-bit DXP A/D converter for better range of color. The DSC-S75's sophisticated camera body consists of a magnesium alloy front and high-impact plastic back. It features a 3x, 7-21mm Carl Zeiss "Vario Sonnar" zoom lens (34-102mm equivalent in 35mm) and an additional 2x digital zoom. Other feature highlights include: 1.8-inch color LCD monitor with backlight, auto and manual focus control, high-speed scan autofocus, an eye-level true zoom optical viewfinder, movie mode with sound and clip recording, a 40-step shutter priority, 13-step aperture priority, full manual exposure option, and built-in flash with four operating modes.

With the button and dial system, you can set the DSC-S75 to automatic or manually control almost every element of operation. For example, you can set the ISO sensitivity and the white balance. You can also select exposure metering for a center-weighted average or spot-metering. Shutter priority can be adjusted from 8 to 1/1000 seconds in 40 steps as well as aperture range from F/2.0 to F/8.0 in 13 steps. Additionally, the camera features manual exposure, exposure compensation, in-camera sharpening, and program AE.

The retracting zoom lens saves space, while still offering an aperture of F/2.0 to F/2.5 and a Contrast Detect focus with AF (AutoFocus) illuminator light. In normal AF, the focus range extends from 19.7 inches to infinity; in Macro AF the focus has a 1.6-inch minimum. The DSC-S75 supports manual focus from 0.1m to infinity in 13 steps using the jog dial. The included InfoLithium battery lasts for nearly three hours of continuous shooting, on average. With the supplied charger, the battery charges in-camera, while charge status displays on the LCD screen.

Images can be recorded in JPEG or GIF compression formats, as well as TIFF for uncompressed. You can even record movies in MPEG EX mode; the highest quality clip is 16 fps. Internally, the camera handles A/D conversion at 14-bit DXP. All relevant information displays on either the main color LCD or the status LCD. The color, 1.8-inch LCD contains a 123,200-pixel capacity with backlight. The optical viewfinder features true zoom with diopter adjustment. The internal flash includes red-eye reduction as well as auto, forced, and off. An optional external flash connects via an ACC port and flash shoe.

The DSC-S75 is compatible with both PC and Mac, with USB connectivity. The complete package includes an 8 MB Memory Stick, InfoLithium battery, charger/AC supply, A/V output cable, shoulder strap, and lens cap with strap. The bundled software is MGI PhotoSuite 8.1, MGI PhotoSuite SE 1.1, and Sony USB driver.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Years and Counting.......2006-10-21

I received my Sony Cybershot in 2001 for Christmas. It is now just about 5 years later and my Sony Cybershot is still functioning wonderfully and I have put a lot of miles on that camera! Really good sound quality, really great photos, lots of features... I'm still learning new ones! And what an awesome price. If this one ever breaks down and needs replacing, I wouldn't mind purchasing the exact same one. I do realize there are cameras out there with many upgrades and higher prices, but seriously... this camera does just what I need.

4 out of 5 stars gbware.......2006-02-26

I've owned this camera for about 4 years and have had great success with it. As other reviewers have stated, the lag time in capturing an image is a major issue - but when I bought this camera - it was state of the art. For that reason I've upgraded to the Sony DSC-V3 which has practically no lag time - it's great for capturing pictures of my grand-daughter as she zips through the family room.

The S75 has been a great camera - aside from the lag time the only other problem I've had is while reviewing images in play back mode, sometimes it will take off with itself uncontrolably scanning through all of the pictures on the stick - very annoying.

I'm giving the S75 to my college graduate so can take pictures while traveling on his new job.

If you get to know this camera you'll get excellent pictures. I use to have an SLR camera and I haven't use it since I bought this one. By the way I have like 4 years and it is in excellent conditions since

5 out of 5 stars Sony S75 Great for the amature photographer.......2004-08-28

Love this camera, Sharp pictures, easy to use, tough, a feature for every situation if you chose to get fancy. Recharagable battery lasts long and charges quick. Negs would be: slight delay between button pressed and pic taken, but seems this is common at this price range. Had it 2 years and taken 4000 pictures.

Product Description

Choosing what to shoot may be hard, but finding the right camera to shoot it isn't thanks to the D-550 Zoom. The comfortably small and stylish digital camera features a powerful seamless 10x zoom (2.8x optical & 3.6x digital zoom) for remarkable range. Its USB Auto-Connect allows for easy connectivity and downloading of images to a computer. And the impressive 3-megapixel CCD combined with Olympus's renowned optics allow for high-quality 8" x 10" prints and beyond -the most realistic digital images yet.

Amazon.com Product Description

Sporting a similar design to previous Olympus D-series digicams, the D-550 Zoom features a 3-megapixel CCD, 2.8x optical zoom, and a 3.6x digital zoom. With its familiar film-camera style and high-resolution imagery, the D-550 is a great choice for vacation photos as well as family snapshots.

Optics and Resolution
The DS-550's 3-megapixel sensor captures ample detail for sharp prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches. For a serious amateur photographer, 3 megapixels is a great resolution, providing enough detail to perform some cropping and still have crisp prints.

The all-glass autofocus Olympus lens has a 2.8x zoom range that's equivalent to a 36-100mm zoom lens on a 35mm camera. For technophiles, its aperture ranges from f2.9 to f4.4 depending on the zoom setting, with a normal focal range from 2.6 feet to infinity. There's also a 3.6x digital zoom, but remember that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly.

To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.8-inch LCD display (also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.

More Features
A sliding clamshell lens cover simultaneously protects the D-550's lens and provides a simple way to turn the camera on and off, and the all-plastic body feels both lightweight and durable. While the D-550 offers automatic settings for point-and-shooters and beginning photographers, there are several manual features for more adventurous photographers, including macro mode, adjustable white-balance settings, exposure compensation, and the ability to shoot black-and-white and sepia images.

Power
Power is provided by four AA batteries (alkalines are included). We recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger. A digital camera will kill a set of alkaline batteries extremely quickly, especially if you're using the camera's LCD display, so they aren't recommended except in a pinch. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, we recommend having two sets of rechargeables so you can always have one set in the camera and the other set in the charger.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips at resolutions of either 320 x 240 pixels (up to 33 seconds per movie) or 160 x 120 pixels (up to 148 seconds per movie). The limited duration and resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on SmartMedia memory cards. The included 16 MB card holds approximately 21 images at the camera's default settings. SmartMedia cards are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 21 images per outing (or plan to use the video feature much), then you'll want a bigger card. A 64 MB card will store well over 100 pictures. With most cameras, the brand of memory card you use is irrelevant, but genuine Olympus cards have a panorama feature not found on cards from other manufacturers. This feature makes it easier to stitch together a series of pictures you've taken into a single panoramic photo, and may justify the slightly higher price of the card if it's a feature you plan to use frequently.

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Size
At 4.6 by 2.6 by 2 inches and 8.5 ounces, the D-550 is fairly thin and small, making it easy to bring along on outings--but it won't easily fit in your shirt pocket.

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the camera, 16 MB SmartMedia card, four AA alkaline batteries, USB cable, video cable, carrying strap, and software on CD.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity SmartMedia memory card. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page.

4 out of 5 stars TechGeek's Review.......2005-05-17

This review is based on three years of use and 3000 pictures:
*This camera is durable. The sliding cover and flip-up flash show now signs of wear
*haven't worried about keeping the lens pristine
*switched to rechargeable AA batteries early on and they still work. have to recharge them every 200 pics (get 158 exposures on the default setting on a 128MB card resulting in 700KB file sizes--enough for 8x10 pics!)
*use the default Camedia picture software (got the upgrade) exclusively for picture printing and decent editing
*software could use better 'templates' aside from 'happy bday'
*plugging in the camera to the TV video inputs and running your own slide show is great for family get togethers (especially at the end of a trip before you leave is a nice recap of family events)
*it's not a compact camera, but it's designed to hold well in your one hand to take pics
*find myself adjusting the 'gamma' up a couple of notches before printing out the pics
*night mode works great if you have a tripod

3 out of 5 stars There are better now for a little more money.......2005-01-13

I guess if you are going for an older camera to save money, this isn't a bad choice, but I would recommend looking at newer ones. Like most electronic gadgets, they get better every year.

Pros:
- generally easy to use
- uses standard AA batteries
- no lens cap to lose
- software - easy web page publishing in professional version

Cons
- a little too big to be pocketable
- there are comparable cameras with 10x and even 12x optical zoom
- no stabilization feature
- lacks shutter-priority, aperature-priority, and manual modes
- difficult to impossible to get good pictures of indoor sporting events and other low-light situations where the flash does no good or you can't use the flash (actually, this is probably true of many other consumer-level cameras)
- slow reaction time - push the button and it takes the picture about a second later (or not at all if it thinks you need the flash)
- menus aren't explained very well in the manual
- software - version that comes with the camera is crippled, but the professional version freezes occasionally

Despite what somebody else said, backing up files to a cd isn't that hard if you know what you are doing; you just have to mount the CD so it looks like any other disk drive. I had no problems with this.

Anyway, I'd say spend a little more money and get a Panasonic with 12X zoom, image stabilization, and some of the other features mentioned above. You could also go for a camera with higher MP, but I'd rather spend my money on features that will actually help me take better pictures, not just bigger ones.

2 out of 5 stars Save your $$$$$.......2004-02-04

Photo's are good, but software ain't.

I've owned the Camedia 550 for a little over a year. I am very disapointed in the software that you HAVE to use with this camera. I upgraded to the "professional" edition, but it's still bad. It does not alow you to back up your photo's onto CD. (Floppy Disk Only, which is worthless). Also I have pixels dying on my viewing screen.
It is difficult to manuver through the options on the camera. Also uses a Smart Media Card, which the new ones do not use, and very few new camera do use, so I'll be stuck with $200 bucks worth of Smart Media Cards when I decide to chuck this thing.

5 out of 5 stars Money Well Spent.......2004-01-19

I bought this camera a year ago; it has served me well in many different environments and in both nighttime and blazing sun conditions. Downloads are swift with either the 3.5 inch flash path floppy or USB. Picture quality is great at low compression settings, higher settings are even better. I use a 64 MB memory card and that is more than adequate for my needs. Battery life is impressive: one charge was good for a 2 week vacation, and that included at least one hour of time viewing pictures with relatives on the built-in screen. Easy to use. Documentation is a bit on the slim side, but sufficient, with the exception of instructions on taking a panoramic picture. Apparently, that info is on the CD. We've taken 1,200 pics or so, no problems.

5 out of 5 stars great camera.......2004-01-15

I bought this camera 18 months ago, and it takes GREAT pictures. I have taken thousands of pictures with this camera with no problem. The two only drwabacks to this camera is its size and it takes a second or two to save the picture to the card, but that's the way it is.
On the other hand, the reason why it is so big is because it uses regular batteries=cheap! However, battery life is great.
Would recommend this camera to anyone who needs a digital camera.

Amazon.com Review

Fuji's F601 is the follow-up to the popular F6800 and has a wealth of options for avid digital camera users. Based around a vertical orientation instead of the usual horizontal one it will at first be unfamiliar territory for those used to a 35mm camera, but once you've put aside your differences the images that the F601 produce are very good.

Fuji cameras, like Kodak's EasyShare range sits in a docking unit, making wires dangling around the desk a thing of the past. This is a nice addition for the new comer keen to make the transfer of files to the PC as easy as possible.

Working on the 3rd Generation Super CCD that FujiFilm is renowned for, the 3.1 million pixels can be boosted up to a whooping 6 mega pixel result. Running from the 3x optical zoom lens that has an aperture of f2.8 - f8 the camera can achieve a 36 - 108mm equivalent focal length on a 35mm camera. On top of this, the F601 also offers a macro mode and 4.4x digital zoom to boot.

Manual settings offer control of everything. The most impressive being the ability to set the ISO setting to 1600 making this an ideal camera for speed or night work. Combine that with the option to capture 40 frames a second and you've got a great camera for sporting events. Other options to keep you entertained include five pre-programmed shooting modes, five flash modes and six white balance settings.

Image quality overall is very good. The camera copes well in both night and daylight settings. The macro mode gets you close but not that close, which can be a bit of a set back if you are looking for this function, but then with a macro mode of 20cm this camera never professes that it is one of its strong points. Colors are well covered and detail strong without too much noise - even when we shot with the 1600 ISO setting. --Jason Denwood, Amazon.co.uk

Amazon.com Product Description

Replacing the FinePix 6800, the FinePix F601 uses Fuji's third-generation 3.1-megapixel Super CCD sensor, which can produce a maximum image file size of 6 megapixels through interpolation. It also features a 3x optical zoom, 4.4x digital zoom, movie mode, and voice annotation function.

Optics and Resolution
With its 3.1-megapixel Super CCD (interpolated up to 6 megapixels), the FinePix F601 delivers resolutions up to 2,832 x 2,128 pixels for colorful prints to 11-by-14 inches and beyond. Combined with Fuji's proprietary image-processing method--Pixel Data Coupling--and new noise-reduction technology, the new Super CCD enables the FinePix F601 to deliver a wider range of ISO sensitivities with a minimal increase in CCD "noise."

The FinePix F601 also features a Super EBC Fujinon 3x optical aspherical zoom lens (with up to a 4.4x digital zoom option) that allows for more detailed close-ups.

Fuji's Super CCD
Instead of conventional CCDs with square photodiodes and pixel arrangements, Fuji's Super CCD has octagonal-shaped photodiodes and pixels situated on 45-degree angles. This "honeycomb" pattern increases sensitivity, allowing pixels to be efficiently packed at maximum density. The area of the photodiode in a half-inch Super CCD with 2 million pixels is about 1.6 times as large as the area offered in the conventional CCD with the same number of pixels. The Super CCD improves overall signal-to-noise ratio and offers a much wider dynamic range.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the FinePix F601 produces color digital videos in multiple creative formats, including QVGA (320 x 240, 66 seconds) and VGA (640 x 480, 27 seconds)--both at 15 frames per second and with sound.

The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on SmartMedia memory cards. The included 16 MB card holds approximately 6 images at the highest 6-megapixel setting (fine setting--2,832 x 2,128 pixels) or 26 images at the typical 3-megapixel setting (normal setting--2,048 x 1,536 pixels).

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera--your computer should automatically recognize the camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Power
The camera is powered by rechargeable lithium-ion battery, which is charged by the included AC adapter.

Size
At 2.8 by 3.7 by 1.3 inches and 7.8 ounces, the FinePix F601 is a powerful camera that fits comfortably in the palm of your hand.

More Features

Contents and Recommended Accessories
This package contains the FinePix F601 digital camera, 16MB SmartMedia card, lithium-ion rechargeable battery, AC adapter-battery charger, wrist strap, USB cable, printed manual, and CD-ROM featuring FinePixViewer software and drivers.

We recommend a higher-capacity SmartMedia card. Also, the F601 cradle enables you to effortlessly charge the battery and transfer photos while the camera comfortably rests on your desktop.

3 out of 5 stars Good camera, small memory.......2007-07-13

The camera was ok. It works well, althought the biggest memory you can purchase is 128 MB. The manufacturers discontinued making this kind of memory cards, and the cards are really expensive. If you are looking to buy a camera with smaller memory this camera would be perfect. It also works well as a webcam.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly Surprised.......2006-06-22

As a professional photographer I don't rely on pocket cameras to do my more ambitious photography, but I do like to have a pocket camera handy with me all the time so I can take advantage of those photo opportunities that arise when I don't have my larger, heavier gear with me. For the past 5 years, I've been using a Fuji 6800Z to fill this role and I was generally pleased with it. There were a few drawbacks (noise in low light, lack of any manual functions, sometimes felt awkward in my hand, didn't like the menu system), but generally I'd say it surved my pocket camera needs well for five years before finally dying (camera function died). I kept using the camera's voice recording mode (Over 2 hours in wav files {1 hour max each} on 64mb card) for several more months before I decided it was time to replace the whole unit with a new pocket cam and possible new voice recorder.

I had decided I didn't want to spend more than $150 on a pocket camera and was QUITE surprised to stumble on the Fuji F601 in a national camera store near where I lived. Originally priced at $500 (and I've seen them on line for as much as $700), the camera I got had been marked down to $105, new in the original box. Once I'd determined that the body was metal and it shot 3 or more megapixels, I decided to go ahead, assuming the features would be similar to or less than what I'd had in the 6800 as that model had cost around $800 when I purchased it in 2001.

Well, when I got the camera home, I was VERY surprised to find that this unit had MORE features than my 6800, MOST of which were things I had sorely missed in the 6800. And the things that the 6800 had that the 601 doesn't were things I never used (file locking, etc.). Allow me to enumerate:

LENS - both have f8.3-24.9mm 3x zoom lens, but 601 allows use of 2.8 aperture throughout zoom range where 6800 didn't.
APERTURE - both 2.8 to 8.0, but see above.
ISO - 6800> 100,200,400 601> 160,200,400 (all sizes) 800,1600 (1 Megapixel only)
MENU - I prefer the 601's style menu a lot, but not all do.
OPERATING MODES - To the modes the 6800 had, the 601 adds Fully Manual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Program. For creative photographers, this is a HUGE plus, giving us the ability to select the shutter speed, aperture size or both when our shooting goals demand it.
FOCUS - The 6800 had a fixed focus pointer while in some modes the 601's focus pointer can be moved.
BODY - Smaller, and yet, somehow, even with largish man's hands, this model is EASIER to hold than the 6800.
VOICE RECORDER - The 6800 allowed for long recordings of voice only with a max file size of 1 hour. The 601 removes this limit, allowing recording of the full capacity of the memory card in one file. More convenient for those of us who do a lot of this. Sound quality was about the same as the 6800, which, while not great, was more than adequate for my needs.

In all other respects, the 601 seems to be as good as or better than the 6800.

SHOOTING RESULTS - When I began taking pictures with it (3mp mode, I never both with the 6mp mode) I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 601 takes better pictures with less noise and truer colors. I'm delighted with the output from this camera. And for $105, I'm just AMAZED at what I have for such a small price.

USB CONNECTION - I didn't bother with the docking station as I'm very mobile and the docking station is just one more thing to lug around. I find the USB cable works fine with no problems whatsoever (physical or operational) on my Windows XP Pro laptop or my girlfriend's XP Home Edition desk top. I've read that some people had trouble with this and I'm not sure why. I can only think perhaps they forgot to install the drivers for the camera or the drivers got corrupted, as I had NO issues at all downloading images to either of our XP machines.

BATTERY - as with the 6800, the 601 comes with a Lithium Ion battery ... charges quickly and lasts long.

WRISTS STRAP - The strap on the 6800 was a rubberized thing that never felt quite big enough or quite right in my grip. The 601's strap is a sturdy fabric strap that feels better and fits my wrists size better.

I invite anyone who is considering purchasing this camera to e-mail me with questions as I just love it and would enjoy discussing it.

4 out of 5 stars How to reset.......2004-06-10

Hello ALL

Can any one guide me on how to reset the camera????

I have been using Finepix F601 Zoom serial number 2ML26749 around a year and have run into a problem. The Camera now doesnot power up anymore. The last working state before the problem occurred was as follows:

1. Connected the camera to the Picture Cradle .
2. Connected the cradle to Windows XP PC (Home edition) via USB
3. Powered on the Camera
4. Windows Task Manager prompts that a digitalk Camera is connected and display avaible options
5. Select Copy pictures from Camera to HDD
6. After Copying the pictures from the camera to HDD, We shut down the XP leaving the Camera Powered on and in "access via USB" State which was indicated by a USB icon on its display.

After the PC was shut down, the camera couldnot be powered off and hence leaving the only option to remove the camera from cradle and remove the battery manually from its compartment. Ever since I am unable to power the camera unit. I tried to replace the memory and battery but of not use.

Please email at rvinukonda@juniper.net

5 out of 5 stars my second fuji - I'm hooked.......2003-11-04

After starting with a 1300 - I lucked out and found this camera on another web site - I got the camera AND the charger at an amazing price. It also came with an extra memory card. I love the size - the upright design takes a little getting used to - but I'm getting there. Photos are clear and crisp, the menu is easy to use and figure out. Options abound, and I just don't think I'll ever buy another brand of digital camera. Fuji gets high marks from me for several reasons. Most importantly - they use readily available smart cards - and they stay with them. I can use all my old accessories from my starter cam - the finepix 1300 - which saves a bundle in the long run. I am glad that the battery is lithium - I have heard that it lasts even longer than previous fuji batteries - and I bought a spare on ebay rather cheaply - as a backup. I've only had it a week and I can't say enough about it. I look forward to using it until it's time to upgrade to my third fuji.

4 out of 5 stars FinePix F601 vs FinePix 6800.......2003-04-13

... I owned a FinePix6800 for over two years, although I have sold the unit, and replaced it with a Canon PowerShot S400 for reasons of preference, not dissatisfaction. The 6800 served me well, and is now servicing a friend who bought it from me. Although I have never used the F601 but have saw it. The unit is slightly smaller than the 6800. Both cameras use the same SCCD which interpolates 3MP to 6MP, however the F601 probably has an improved version of this CCD. The problem with the interpolation is it does cause digital noise, especially on night shots with slower shutter speeds. This is due to the heat that the CCD generates, so mostly I shot in 3MP mode. The noise generated does not [ruin] the shot, but it is noticable. Shooting day time shots, the noise is less apparent if non-existant. As for the zoom feature, like all digital cameras, don't use digital zoom if possible, stick with optical as the shot tend to get grainey. Now if I understand correctly, and the other reviews are accurate, the F601 doesn't come with a docking cradle, the 6800 did. This is a convenience that is needed. Check on this before making the purchase. Other considerations would be with the F601 itself. The 6800 came with a Mini Movie Mode of 160 seconds, the F601 can only do 66 seconds. The 6800 came with a 2" LCD the F601 has a 1.5" perhaps this is to decrease power consumption, but why the shortened movie times?? I also noticed that the settings knob has been placed at an angle on top of the camera the 6800 has it placed on the upper front in a vertical position next to the shutter button. This allows for easier manipulation of the settings, but this may just be a preference of mine, as I can see the LCD at the same time. Before you buy, check both cameras out, and for those of you who are buying a digital for the first time, both the 6800 & F601 will take some getting used to due to the vertical design. Overall these are nice cameras, but in no way should they be considered pocket cameras, due to the weight of the units. Buy a nice padded case like the ones made by Lowepro or Tamrac Digital Series, and attach it to your belt or use the shoulder strap. One waist high drop on concrete, and you can say Aloha to your brand new camera.

PS The 4 star rating is due to reduction of the movie mode, and smaller LCD screen. If the unit doesn't come with a docking cradle out of the box it's a 3. I don't understand why less would be an improvement, except in costs. And because of the falling prices of digitals, I paid [dollar amount] for the 6800 in 2000, for [dollar amount] MSRP, you should get at least what I got in 2003 if not more!

5 out of 5 stars Awsome camera.......2005-01-03

Couldnt have asked for a better birthday gift. With only 3.3 megapixels the pictures come out awsome! I have the canon digital rebel with 6 megapixels and you cant tell what pictures came from what camera. My fuji is twwo years old and still works great! Havent had a problem yet. The only bad thing is it drains the life out of your batteries, and fast. Make sure you carry an extra set at all times.

5 out of 5 stars Great for New Parents!.......2004-09-14

I've owned this camera for almost 2 years now & I still think it's the best all around camera for new parents. Here's why:

1. The video is AWESOME for a digicam. 640x480 resolution + 30 frames per second = 15 minutes of good quality candid shots on an IBM 1GB Microdrive. (note - nobody wants to watch 15 minutes of video, so the 3 minutes available on many of today's cameras is sufficient)
2. Can easily be used as a point and shoot, but I like knowing the other features are available if I want to "grow" as a photographer.
3. A connection (shoe) for additional flash gives me a little more range for those family shots.
4. 3+ megapixels (if you get into that whole interpolated hexagon pixel confusion) gets me great photos - poster sized through online retailers like Kodak (don't ask me why, I just know it works), 8x10 at home on an inexpensive Canon inkjet, and with 4x6 I have a little wiggle room for cropping.

I just purchased a Canon Powershot A95 with rotating LCD for my wife and it's great too, but we're still using the Fuji for combo video/picture sessions.

I spent about $1000.00 on this, 2 128MB smart media cards, a case, and a 1GB IBM Microdrive in 11/2002. It's been worth every dime!

4 out of 5 stars Pay Attention and Shop Smart ..........2003-12-27

Okay okay ... You can get this from several Z-shops sellers, starting at $438 (as of 12-26-03). There are some small errors in the description, which you may clear up for yourself at the Fujifilm.com site. But compare this to the S5000, which you can get new, here, for about $340. And if you hunt diligently, today you can grab it for $296. I am not repeat not talking about some auction sight, either. (Nor in Japan, where I live at the moment, though there is a place here I must check tomorrow just in case. Besides, delayed gratification is not my strong suit.)

The Fujifilm site gives a detailed description of their CCD (Charge Coupled Device) pixel array that to me sounds like the best thing going in what the working class like me can afford. The S602 is Fuji's 3rd generation CCD, the S5000 is their 4th generation. The 602 has 6x optical and 4.4x digital zoom (26.4x), the 5000 had 10x optical and 2.2x digital (22x). If that extra 4.4 turns your head, then shopping for a telephoto is probably something to consider. I find the greater lens power more attractive, and sould give clearer photos, at 22x side by side with the 602 at a comparable setting.

If you want to spend serious $$$ for something that has 5 to 8 megapixels, more power to you. But the S5000 is a better Fuji for less money ... the S602 is really last year's news. My hard earned greenbacks are on the S5000.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Camera.......2003-12-16

The Fuji FinePix S602 Zoom is a fine camera capable of taking a 15 minute video using a microdrive, just watch what you are saying while shooting because the microphone will pick up your voice before any other sound. Most of the controls are easy to find and use without having to resort to reading the manual. The flash produces very little if any red eye. The almost infinite zoom lens allows you to get close to and frame your subject easily. Macro shots are just as easy. Photos printed on my HP 952C look great at 8 by 10 inches. The only thing to watch out for is when the camera is set to auto is that sometimes, usually indoors, you can end up with a very slow shutter speed such as 7 sec. which can cause a blurred picture.

5 out of 5 stars Fujifilm FinePix S602.......2003-10-05

I purchased this camera last year from Amazon at an amazing price. It took time to get use to some of it's features but I truly love it. I purchased it for it's movie mode and it's 6x zoom lense. Low light is somewhat a problem but can be overcome with a steady hand or tripod. I have printed 11x14 prints and they are excellent. You can't beat the features for the price.

Amazon.com Review

For advanced digital photographers, Minolta's large and powerful Dimage 7i offers a broad range of features and tools for any type of still photography. With a 5-megapixel resolution, images can be outputted at poster sizes. And the excellent 7x optical zoom gets you extremely close to your subjects.

It's definitely not a camera that you're going to be slipping into a pocket. The Dimage 7i is professional class in terms of both performance and size, weighing in at over a pound without batteries. That said, its heft is comfortable and can actually be handled with one hand.

The color electronic viewfinder knows when you put your eye up to it, turning itself on and turning off the bright 1.8-inch LCD, which saves on battery life and makes for a nifty party trick. It even has a diopter lens so glasses-wearing users can adjust it to their eyesight.

Captured images were downright impressive--with bright, lifelike colors, and very sharp details. The Dimage 7i sports a long list of advanced features, including a variety of movie capture modes (including low-light), a real-time histogram that lets you adjust your aperture and other settings before snapping a photo, and continuous auto-focus on moving subjects.

You might think that a camera of this level would be a bit imposing to use, but Minolta has laid out the buttons and wheels appropriately, letting you adjust between modes easily and including an LCD panel on top of the camera that keeps you informed of the settings.

It's not the kind of camera you'd want to buy your teenager for a birthday, but if you're looking for a digital camera that can hold its own against top film cameras, the Minolta Dimage 7i definitely deserves a look. --J. Curtis

Cons:

Amazon.com Product Description

The Minolta DiMAGE 7i succeeds the DiMAGE 7 and offers several key improvements. The DiMAGE 7i ratchets up the speed, with a 1/4,000 top exposure and ultra-high-speed (UHS) continuous drive bursts up to seven frames per second at 1.280 x 960 pixels. It also features new controls for brightness, contrast, and saturation, as well as improved audio and video recording capabilities.

Optics and Resolution
The Minolta DiMAGE 7i is built around a high-precision electro-optical system designed to maximize image quality. The system contains a 5.24-megapixel, 2/3-type interline primary color CCD with 4.95 million effective pixels for fine high-resolution images. The pixel resolution of the CCD will produce 13-by-17-inch, 150 dpi prints on an inkjet printer.

The Minolta GT Lens featured in the DiMAGE 7i is an optical jewel cut in glass. With enough resolution to produce a fine image on a 7-million pixel CCD, this lens employs AD glass and aspheric elements to ensure sharp, contrasting images with no chromatic aberration at any focal length. In addition, the Minolta DiMAGE 7i's optical zoom lens accepts standard 49mm filters.

With a focal range of 7.2-50.8mm, the DiMAGE 7i's fast 7x zoom apochromatic (APO) lens is equivalent to a 28-200mm 35mm zoom lens. Your shooting options range from wide angle for expansive landscapes and confined interiors to telephoto for intimate portraits. The fast f2.8 to f3.5 aperture easily permits natural light shooting without a flash.

More Features
The DiMAGE 7i is the first Minolta digital camera to incorporate direct manual focus (DMF). DMF is found in professional-level film cameras like the award-winning Minolta Maxxum 7. It allows the focus to be fine-tuned manually, after the AF system has focused and locked on the subject.

The DiMAGE 7i has two displays for critical composition: grid and scale. Usually found in large-format view cameras, the grid makes aligning the camera with vertical or horizontal elements within the image simple. The grid confirms that the horizon or buildings are straight. The scale can be used in close-up photography to judge the relative proportions of the subject. The DiMAGE 7i is fitted with a new 1.8-inch low-temperature high-contrast color LCD monitor, which has an extended color gamut, contrast, and dynamic range.

For low-light situations, you can use the DiMAGE 7i's built-in flash, or use compatible external Minolta flashes. A wireless-remote flash function gives even more control over flash photography by allowing multiple off-camera Minolta flash units to be fired simultaneously by the camera, without cables.

You can record audio along with still images with the voice memo feature, allowing a 16-bit audio track of up to 15 seconds to be attached to an image after it has been captured.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the DiMAGE 7i produces digital videos in multiple creative formats, including standard QVGA (320 x 240) color movies and monochrome night movies up to 60 seconds with 16-bit audio. The night-movie mode can record movie clips under extreme low-light conditions, while the interval function can produce a series of still images taken at regular intervals, or it can combine the images into a time-lapsed movie at any image size.

The limited resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on CompactFlash memory cards, and the memory slot is compatible with CompactFlash Type II cards as well as Microdrives. The included 16 MB card holds approximately eight images at 2,560 x 1,920 pixel resolution (standard mode, high). CompactFlash cards are reusable, but you will definitely want a bigger card. A 128 MB card is a good starting point, but we recommend a 256 MB card to get the full benefit of the DiMAGE 7i.

To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera--your computer should automatically recognize the camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Power
The camera is powered by four NiMH rechargeable batteries, which are included along with a battery charger.

Size
At 4.6 by 3.6 by 4.4 inches and 18.5 ounces, the DiMAGE 7i is definitely not an easily pocketable point-and-shoot camera.

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the DiMAGE 7i camera, 16 MB CompactFlash card, four NiMH rechargeable batteries, battery charger, neck strap, lens hood, lens cap with strap, USB and video cables, CD-ROM with DiMAGE Image View Utility software and drivers, and printed camera manual.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend additional NiMH batteries and a higher-capacity CompactFlash card.

5 out of 5 stars purchested used in 2006 .......2007-07-10

price in 2002 because the image quality of the 7i is increadable.

1 out of 5 stars Zoom Lens Fell Off.......2006-09-28

I own two Minolta Dimage 7i cameras. The first one took beautiful photographs. I had it only nine months when the manual zoom adjustment started acting up. Within a week the lens fell out in my hand. Calling a few camera shops I was quoted average $300+ for parts and labor to repair it. I could buy a used one for less. Since I had recently gotten a TTL flash, and had several lenses and wired remote for the 7i, and was quite happy with the quality of the photos, I decided to buy a used one to replace the broken one.

The first photos I took with the replacement camera were very noisy, washed out color, and not true-color. I attributed it to low light, it was evening, and maybe I hadn't adjusted somthing right. After taking more photos over the next week I came to realize that this camera just took bad photos. Very noisy, the auto focus rarely focused correctly like my first one had, it took terrible photographs. I even upgraded the flash rom to the latest one available on the Minolta web site. This didn't help. Then I started noticing there were small differences in the two camera bodies, so checked their serial numbers. My first one that took beautiful photos has a serial number in the 290,000 range, the replacement camera serial number is in the 94,000,000 range. A much newer camera and obviously made with inferior cheaper parts than the older one.

I had owned the newer one about two months, and hadn't taken that many photographs with it because they come out terrible, most are unusable photos, when the manual focus ring started acting up just like my first one had. My heart sank into my stomach. I know what it means.. it won't be long before the lens falls off this camera too. I havn't taken many photos with it since because I know it's life isn't long.

I don't know when I'll be able to afford to buy another camera to replace it. But I know one thing for sure... it won't be a Minolta.

4 out of 5 stars Dimage 7i.......2003-12-04

I have just had the camera a few days now. As for all the gadgets, its gonna take a while to pick up on all those. Right now I am using it mostly on automatic and casually venturing from that to different settings and comparing to my other digital cameras.

First, I love the 5 mp setting, the camera was very easy to pick up and start right out using .. (like most guys do)

I am impressed with the quality of the pictures. I like the fact that everything is pretty much straight forward. The camera fires up quickly. I tested it with a romote flash sorta like a fill in and it worked flawlessly. The compact flash memory cards are fairly inexpensive and small so you can have a few backups for those multi picture extravaganzas.

The one thing I would love to see addressed on the camera is the batteries... it would be nice to see minolta come with a battery, rechargable, rather than tring to keep up with two or three sets of AA s ... The instruction book... (guess I will have to read or at least review sooner or later ) looks like it covers pretty much anything you can run accross.

Would I recommend this camera? Yes I would but not for the inexperienced guy... when you first look at this camera... there seems to be a lot to digest... but all in all... Love it!

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars doesn't say enough..........2003-03-14

I have heard bad reviews that this particular camera eats batteries, but I have not had any problems with batteries being used up fast. My last camera, which was only 2.2 Megapixels ate batteries much faster than the Dimage 7i. The picture quality is excellent. When the camera is taking pictures in it's best quality, you can see those minute blemishes that you don't usually notice in pictures. This camera is by far the best that I have ever tried. Highly reccommended to buy if you are in the market for a 5.0+ megapixel camera.

3 out of 5 stars A Mixed Performer.......2003-03-11

The good:
Great zoom range. It's the only ZLR that goes as wide as 28mm (35mm equivalent).

The bad:
Very poor focusing, especially in low light.

The ugly:
More noise than you'd expect. A better alogarithm is need. A digital camera is only as good as its programming.
The electronic viewfinder is virtually useless. The low pixel count and distorted viewfinder optics do it in.

Amazon.com Product Description

For a compact, affordable digital camera that takes sharp pictures with enough detail for prints at sizes up to 8 by 10 inches, look no further than the Olympus D-370.

Optics and Resolution
This higher-resolution successor to the popular D-370 comes with a 2-megapixel sensor that captures enough detail for crisp 8-by-10-inch prints. For the typical family photographer, 2 megapixels is a great balance between price and performance. If you want a camera with even more resolution, you'll probably also want more manual controls than the D-380 offers--consider the Olympus C-3020 instead.

The glass Olympus focus-free 4.5mm lens (equivalent to 35mm in film cameras) has an aperture range of f4 to f8. The camera features a 5x digital telephoto zoom, but remember that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly.

To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.6-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.

More Features
A sliding clamshell lens cover simultaneously protects the lens and provides a simple way to turn the camera on and off. While the D-370 is clearly designed for point-and-shooters and beginning photographers, there are several manual features for more adventurous photographers, including macro mode, adjustable white-balance settings, exposure compensation, and the ability to shoot black-and-white and sepia images.

Power
Power is provided by four AA batteries or two LB-01 disposable lithium batteries--a set of LB-01 batteries is included. These lithium packs are the size of two side-by-side AA batteries, and they have a surprisingly long lifespan. However, they aren't rechargeable, so when they finally die, they go into the trash. If you use the camera once a month or less, the lithium batteries are a logical idea, since they'll hold their charge for years when sitting in an unused camera. If you use the camera more often, then the lithium packs don't make economic or environmental sense--we recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger.

Movie Mode
In movie mode, the camera captures silent video clips up to 60 seconds in length. The limited duration and resolution of your movies guarantees that this feature won't replace your camcorder, but it's perfect for when you just want to capture a quick movie and e-mail it to a friend or relative.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on SmartMedia memory cards. The included 8 MB card holds approximately 16 images at the camera's default settings. SmartMedia cards are reusable, but if you tend to take more than 16 images per outing (or plan to use the video feature frequently), then you'll want a bigger card. A 64 MB card will store well over 100 pictures. To transfer images to your computer, simply attach the included USB cable between your PC and your camera. Your computer should automatically recognize your camera and let you move the pictures to your hard drive.

Size
At 4.8 by 2.6 by 1.8 inches and 6.7 ounces, the D-370 is slim and compact enough to bring along in a purse or pocket

Contents and Recommended Accessories
The package includes the camera, 8 MB SmartMedia card, two long-life LB-01 lithium batteries, USB cable, carrying strap, and software on CD.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity SmartMedia memory card. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett

1 out of 5 stars Achilles heal - weak battery compartment cover - renders camera useless.......2007-01-28

Don't buy it. This was a good camera - loved it in fact - until I bumped it against a table as I turned to take a picture, and the battery compartment lid broke open. It wasn't a big bump either, a rather slight bump in fact, but must have hit the camera just right. The tiny plastic ridges that keep it closed snapped off, making it impossible to close, rendering the camera totally useless. If you can't close the battery compartment, you can't use the camera. I wrote Olympus twice over a year ago, but they never responded. Too bad, up until then I raved about Olympus. I since bought a Canon A620 and found it takes WAY better pics, has a ton more features, and has been very durable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Camera For Everyone.......2006-08-02

My husband bought this camera for me about 3 years ago. I love it. I was always afraid of digital cameras, not sure how to use them. (I'm not so technical) However, this is so easy to use, it is a big recomend for beginers.

I recomend it even more because the picture quality is fantastic. No one can believe the pictures I print out are from a 2mp camera. They look just like regular photos. I print them and send them to my whole family.

We have dropped it several times and this last time did it in. I do not fault the camera at all. We have been totally rough on it.

I really can't say enough good things about this camera and I am very upset I have to search for a new one. But I figured I might as well upgrade since I have to buy one. Though I am tempted to just rebuy this same model.

5 out of 5 stars I LOOOVE THIS CAMERA!.......2005-12-27

This was my first digital camera I got back in 2003. I still use it, and I still love it! The picture quality is really really good. I have dropped it dozens of time, even on concrete! It still works perfectly fine! It's a tough little camera! It's bulky, but it takes great pictures. i still cant believe it's only a 2.0 megapixel, thats how good the picture look. Even in 640x480. Really good quality.

Below is the review:

I am giving this digital camera 4 stars. Its an excellent camera for 2 megapixels. The only thing that gets on my nerves is NO OPTICAL Zoom. Only digital zoom and that it uses the hard to find SMART MEDIA MEMORY CARD. Aside from this, for 2 megapixels, it takes excellent pictures. Most pictures I took came out excellent. Whatever pictures came out terrible were my own doing and not the camera. Does print clear pictures too. I would recommend this camera, except it only has digital zoom. Its the Optical zoom number you want to look for. But it may be fine for ebay usage. It wont matter much if you zoom in with the digital zoom for ebay. But I don't recommend using the digital zoom for important pictures such as of friends and family. Considering my dad has had this camera since either 2000 or 2001 and it still works, I recommend it, except please remember its the OPTICAL ZOOM number you want to look for.

IT WAS IN 2002! I JUST FOUND THE RECEIPT. HE BOUGHT THIS CAMERA IN 2002. THANK YOU.

Product Description

It's all up to you with the PowerShot G3. With its 4.0-megapixel CCD sensor providing amazing resolution images, which stay sharp even when printing up to A3, this digital camera is destined to capture your imagination as well as super sharp images. The secret behind the PowerShot G3 isn't just one innovative feature. It's the intuitive way all of its advanced technology works together to make tricky shots look simple. The PowerShot G3 lens is in a league of its own. It is a super-quick, high-resolution 4x optical zoom lens (f2.0 - 3.0) with a focal length of 7.2 to 28.8mm (35 - 140mm equivalent in 35mm format). This gives you a larger zoom range and a faster aperture, especially useful in low light conditions. This camera also features Canon's new, high-performance DIGIC (DIGital Imaging Core) processor for superb color reproduction, fast operation and long battery life. Combine this with the iSAPS (intelligent Scene Analysis based on PhotoSpace) technology, which allows faster auto-focusing, accurate auto-exposure and precise auto white balancing you can be sure you'll achieve faithful image reproduction. The PowerShot G3 contains a full set of scene-based and creative shooting modes, as well as a custom mode where you can set and store parameters to suit your photographic style. What's more, the PowerShot G3 has separate shutter and aperture functions, offering you extensive manual control in a digital camera. Open shutter, closed aperture, less light for longer - whichever you choose, your options are wide open. You'll also find FlexiZone AF/AE and Focus bracketing, to ensure you can achieve perfect focus and exposure. Ergonomic and comfortable in the hand, the camera has a maneuverable LCD screen, while a jog dial combined with the Function button makes it simple to navigate through the creative options.

Amazon.com Review

Few digital camera lines have been as successfully branded as Canon's Powershot. And the best known in that line was the powerful and fun to use G2. Now, Canon's following it up with their G3, which has the same four megapixels of resolution but now offers an improved 4X optical zoom and other updated features.

With a revamped body, the G3 feels a bit more comfortable in the hands. A mid-sized camera, you'll notice it hanging around your neck, but its 14.5 ounce frame won't weigh you down terribly. With a high-speed CompactFlash card, the G3 can take video clips of up to three minutes complete with sound.

You'll want to consider an upgrade to one of those cards, as the G3 ships with only a 32 MB standard CF card--not bad for bundled memory, but you'll be happier with more storage room. Images taken at the highest resolution quickly filled up the 32 MB card, but were highly detailed as well as bright with realistic colors.

The G3 features the same large, bright 1.8-inch LCD as its predecessor, making it easy to frame your shot in anything except direct sunlight. Like earlier G models, the LCD flips out and can be rotated around completely, letting you view it from any angle.

This works well with the G3's two options for self-timing, 2 and 10 seconds, so you can see what you're doing from the target viewpoint. And the G3's above-industry-standard 4x optical zoom lets you get in closer than the G2's 3x zoom as well.

Compatible with Canon's Direct Print feature, you can output images from the G3 directly to any of Canon's Direct Print line of printers. The G3 is a great choice for a 4 megapixel, 4x optical zoom camera with a wealth of features. --J. Curtis

Cons:

Amazon.com Product Description

Quite simply, the Canon PowerShot G3 is an elegant, easy-to-use joy of a digital camera that will satisfy the needs of the most demanding professional or advanced amateur photographer. It boasts an impressive 4-megapixel resolution, a 4x optical zoom, and a bright LCD monitor that swivels off to the side of the camera and tilts up and down as needed. It also provides a bevy of manual creative controls in addition to its fully automatic mode.

Optics and Resolution
The PowerShot G3 owes its brilliantly detailed images to a high-resolution, 4-megapixel CCD that delivers a postcard-size image with no visible pixilation. On-chip primary color filters provide vivid and realistic color without the noisiness associated with other primary-color filters. The G3 can capture images at resolutions of 2,272 x 1,704; 1,600 x 1,200; 1,024 x 768; and 640 x 480. This range allows for prints up to 11 by 14 inches, as well as easy-to-upload images for the Web and e-mail.

The G3's lens features a 4x optical zoom, the first on a PowerShot camera, which moves from wide-angle to extreme telephoto with the touch of a finger. The lens aperture is a large and bright f2.0-f3.0, so you can shoot in low light without flash. The G3 also features a 3.6x digital zoom that when combined with the 4x optical gives you a total zoom of 14x.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Type I or II CompactFlash memory cards. The included 32 MB card will store approximately 27 images at 2,272 x 1,704 pixels (at large/fine settings). Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB storage-class connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
In addition to taking still photos, the PowerShot G3 can also record movie clips of up to 3 minutes. You can choose from either 160 x 120 or 320 x 240 pixel video formats.

More Features
The G3's electronic dial, with its independent mode dial and lever, replaces the functions of the previous two-stage main dial and mode dial. The control layout is functional and simple to use. The display panel at the top of the large, 1.8-inch LCD monitor has been redesigned for a clear layout of icons, and larger fonts make the menus easy to read.

Exposure metering is selectable among evaluative, center-weighted average, or spot. AE lock and FE lock let you store ideal auto and flash exposures until you're ready to shoot, while the exposure compensation enables you to adjust the exposure up or down as much as two full stops.

You can add power to the PowerShot G3 by adding optional components, from Canon's EX series Speedlight external flashes (which connect easily to the G3's hot shoe) to a variety of converters and conversion lenses.

Power, Size, and Contents
The camera is powered by a proprietary Canon rechargeable lithium-ion battery (included), and measures 4.8 by 3.0 by 2.5 inches and 14.5 ounces. This package includes the PowerShot G3 digital camera, a 32 MB CompactFlash card, a lithium battery (model BP-511), a compact power adapter (model CA-560), a wireless controller, USB and AV cables, neck strap, and a CD-ROM with Photoshop LE imaging software and USB drivers for Windows and Mac.

4 out of 5 stars At its introduction, a real powerhouse.......2006-11-21

When I bought this camera 3 years ago, it was the advanced "point-n-shoot" I had been waiting for. While it's outdated now, it's successors (the most recent is the just-launched G7) have continued Canon's tradition of knowing their users. This camera let's me do nearly everything to which I was accustomed with my film slr. It can be fully automatic, (almost) completely manual (you can't expose the same frame/file multiple times, as in a film camera). It has a choice of metering modes, though no spot meter - however I've rarely found this to be too sore a point). And it let's me be creative and experiments.

My main gripes:
1. Autofocus is not speedy nor as accurate as as a film slr.
2. Battery life is much less than a film camera (as are most digicams).
3. It only records up to ISO400, and there's some noise and fringing in the shadows in low light at that speed.
4. Lens does not have a fixed maximum aperature, however, at the lens' widest angle max aperature is a robust F/2.
5.It now seems a bit clunky, physically.

I'm looking forward to upgrading to my first DSLR shortly. Can't wait to have the resolution, speed, and lens interchangeability that I so enjoyed on my old Elan.

That said, if you're looking for an advanced fixed lens point and shot, don't hesistate to try out the latest in the Canon Powershot line.

2 out of 5 stars Malfunctions, poor cust. service, insulting Upgrade Program.......2005-03-31

Initially a nice camera. However, while I was stationed in Iraq the camera suffered from an E24 error while it was with my wife in Germany. I chose not to take the camera to Iraq out of fear that it would be damaged. Instead, to my suprise, it was damaged in Germany for no apparant reason, atleast not one due to poor handling. My wife mailed the camera to the Canon repair shop in the States. They returned the camera in working order. The repairs were completed free of charge since it was in the time period of the one year warranty. On the day I returend from Iraq (6 months later after the first repair) a friend took a photo of us at the reception ceremony. The camera relapsed into the same state as before - an E24 error. The LCD screen would not display any data. The camera therefore completely shut itself off, a feature that was later explained to me by a Canon representative that is used to protect the camera from further damage. I spoke with a repair representative about what appears to me to be an easy fix. I was told that since my warranty had expired I would have to pay a minimum of $187 to a maximum of $500 for the repairs. Keep in mind this was told to me prior to any Canon technician ever even looked at the camera. I asked if that would still be the charge if it was a fix as simple as a loose screw and they told me that was an accurate assumption. I then asked if I would be required to pay if it was found that the problem was related to the initial repair having not been done properly while under warranty, again they responded that I would. They then informed me of an "Upgrade Program". They told me I could send them my G3, and pay them an additional $300, and in return I would receive a REFURBISHED G5! Not a new one, REFURBISHED! If I were to accept that offer I would end up paying $950 for a refurbished Canon G5 ($300 + the original $650 for the G3). I was insulted to say the least. I'm willing to bet that those refurbished G5's are part of a program that they have for an upgrade to the G6 for the G5 users that have the same issue as I. What a scam! What a pathetic customer service department! What an insult to an American soldier that just returned from a 13 month deployment in Iraq! Oh yeah, the company is Japanese, they don't care anyway;)

But by the way, I do own another Canon Powershot A20, 2.1 MP. I've owned it for over 3 years and it has been a great camera. I believe Canon is the best brand out there. But as for their repair assistance, customer service, and warranty policy - they are simply an insult!

5 out of 5 stars This is a great camera!.......2004-10-03

I bought my G3 in September of 2003 after my SLR took a dump 3 weeks before my baby was due. I have NEVER been disappointed. Granted, if I had the money, I would have gone for something better, but this was the BEST I could have gotten for my money. Some reviewers have commented on the camera not being worth the price - you must not have shopped around! I found mine, brand new, for $460 from a reputable online camera store.

My pictures turn out great most of the time. I agree with the slow focus time, but you can't get everything with a prosumer camera. I love the neverending list of options this camera offers (from flash output to f-stops to white balance, etc. etc.).

When I have the money saved up I'll be buying the Canon digital rebel, but until then I am very satisfied with my G3.

3 out of 5 stars Good, with definite limitations........2004-06-23

I've had my G3 for about 10 months now, and I've taken thousands of pictures with it. The positives:
- Takes great, clear pictures under ideal conditions; often with better results than my 35mm Canon SLR!
- Easy uploads to my PC.
- Accepts my external Canon flash.
- Excellent battery life. (I've people complain about battery life with other digital cameras, but this really is a strong point for the G3.)
- The unique LCD that flips over is "cool" (and easy to protect from scratches).

- Has lots of shooting modes for a non-pro camera.
The negatives:
- The lens cap is a poor design; it falls off very easily (at least Canon provides a cord so it doesn't get lost).
- Focus is slow except under ideal lighting conditions.
- Focus is unreliable; I've learned to take 3 shots at a time, hoping that at least one of them will be in sharp focus.
- Photo quality gets noticeably worse (more "noise") as soon as you increase the exposure "speed" above the slowest setting (ASA 50).
- The design is relatively bulky and heavy for a non-SLR camera, and the controls are not ergonomically correct.
- The RAW picture format option is useless with this camera because Canon's software gives you virtually no useful options for correcting/modifying photos in RAW format. To do anything useful you have to take the time to convert your photos to JPG anyway. I gave up on RAW after the first couple of tries and have stuck with JPG format since then.
In summary... I expected a lot at this price level, and the G3 really is a great camera for family snapshots, scenery and documents. However, it is a poor camera for low-light conditions or action photography.
