Amazon.com Product Description

If you're missing calls because you can't hear the phone ring, and if you don't find much comfort in those annoying (and tiny) blinking lights that aren't much help from across the room, consider the Uniden EZI-996. The practical design helps solve a number of problems for users with minor sight or hearing challenges.

Two large red lights on the base indicate when the phone is ringing and when you have a voicemail message--and they're large enough to see more clearly from a distance. A belt clip is included, so you can keep the handset with you as you walk around the house. You can also keep your hearing aid connected and wear the handset comfortably at your waist. Separate controls adjust the ringer and the handset volume, and a handset indicator sound helps you locate the unit if you've lost it in the couch cushions. The keypad is backlit and has large buttons, making it easier to see when dialing.

The EZI-996 operates with a reliable 900 MHz transmission and tried-and-true analog technology. With subscription to service through your local phone company, the 30-station caller ID tracks your recent calls and returns them at the touch of a button. A separate 10-station memory stores your most frequently dialed numbers, with a one-touch dial for an emergency contact. Uniden includes a one-year warranty covering parts and service.

What's in the Box
Base, cordless handset, AC adapter, battery, battery cover, telephone line cord, belt clip, user's guide, warranty and registration card

5 out of 5 stars Uniden EZI996 Phone.......2007-09-09

To the point. The phone was purchased as a gift for an elderly woman with both hearing and sight problems. The phone worked great and as well or better than more expensive phones that we tried. It is easy to use--has large numbers, a flashing light when ringing and great adjustable volume for both the ring and earphone. I would recommend this phone to anyone who has sight or hearing difficulties.

5 out of 5 stars Uniden Phone, purchaser review.......2007-09-06

It's perfect match for this household. We will replace another of the same make/model for another area. Thanks for the prompt service.

1 out of 5 stars Too much static.......2007-09-05

We bought these for my mom thinking they would be an easy way for her to hear/see that the phone was ringing and easy buttons for dialing. They have been a nightmare. The phones have so much static on the line sometimes, it's impossible for her to hear and to be heard. She has tried and tried to change the channel for better reception with no luck. A little over a year after buying them, we'll be dumping these and buying her the phones we have in our home.

5 out of 5 stars Hearing Impaired?.......2007-09-05

You'll love the phone if you need to have the sound boosted. The phones cordless and works well. Good value.

4 out of 5 stars Visually impaired phone.......2007-08-26

I bought this phone for my mother-in-law who is legally blind and
needed a cordless phone. The larger buttons make it easier for her
to use. Very well satisfied with this product.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great phone! Threw it in the hot tub, No problems........2007-07-23

I tested the phone the first day by throwing it into the water. My wife was quite unhappy with that, but I figure test the warranty day one.

The phone is quite waterproof, buttons easy to press while wet and in the hot tub, good ringer volume, nice caller ID. Highly recommend for use in your hot tub.

2 out of 5 stars water resistant or water proof? so what's with the little button deal at the bottom?.......2007-05-14

I purchased this product for my lovely wife. She is terribly hard on cordless phones because of her various activities around the house and yard. It's too soon to tell how it holds up under her punishment. The only complaint so far is that the battery doesn't last. There was this button thing on the bottom of the phone but it's gone now. I'm not sure what it was for. I'd like to find out if that's why it doesn't hold a charge. Otherwise it's working ok.

5 out of 5 stars great phone.......2007-03-30

we love our new phone... it is great around water which we are alot.....we have ruined many phones by dropping them in the water but this one is water proof....

5 out of 5 stars Great pool phone.......2007-01-17

Need a phone by the pool? Waiting for an important call but you are in the shower or tub? This is your answer!

Basic feature cordless phone that is totally waterproof! It floats in the pool, when it rings we just pick it up out of the water and answer! the range is not as far as a regular in-house cordledss (about 30' stays very clear) but the waterproof feature is GREAT.

The phone is also ruggedized, and drops are no problem on concrete or tile. Perfect phone around water...and not to bad in the house either!

5 out of 5 stars Great product.......2007-01-10

We bought this to use around the pool. It works great. Threw it into the water and it does exactly as it says. I recommend this product.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-09-03

I owned one of these for well over four years and it always worked like a charm.

5 out of 5 stars Works like a dream.......2007-08-23

I am loving this phone! My friend recommended it to me for home office use--and I, in turn have recommended it to my boss! Sound is clear, handset and backup battery storage are definite bonus! Handset offers flexibility in roaming around while on those LONG phone calls. I don't use the answering device--yet, but I know V-Tech offers simplicity to their great products--I don't think I would purchase another brand.

4 out of 5 stars Great unit but may not last long........2007-07-30

This is a great unit if you have 2 lines at home or office. 2 separate voice mail boxes and good reception at longer distance than most. The intercom works great too to talk or fine a missing handset. You can purchase this base and handheld unit for less than the handheld unit alone (go figure). These units get considerably hot while charging, which must have caused one of my hand units to go bad internally after 2 years of use. Never-the-less, it is a great phone and I purchased a replacement so I can keep it for a few more years.

5 out of 5 stars Great 2-line Answer Machine.......2007-07-16

The best features of this answer machine are: a) the ease of using a headset, b)switching back and forth between speakerphone and headset on the base unit and c) listening, repeating and deleting calls. Also, the fact that you can use the answer machine on line 1 only, line 2 only or
both lines is an added bonus. Great little machine--especially for the price!

4 out of 5 stars I rate it " Very Good".......2007-05-01

Using this product with 2 handsets for about 3 years. This is not a "Mercedez-Benz" phone but certainly an acceptable, reliable product. One handset has developed a problematic dialing button, but you just press it a little harder (smile). Handsets work better if they have fairly fresh batteries. Range is good when battery is strong.

5 out of 5 stars Great reception, great price........2007-08-23

Well, this product is very good, it worked for me perfectly I have it connected as a second auxiliar and connected using my VoSkype box and it works very well.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Phone.......2007-07-06

This is one of the best phones I have owned. I searched a long time for a decent phone. I couldn't find anything with good sound quality. This one has very good sound quality. Not many bells and whistles, just a good basic phone. I'm very happy with the answering machine too. I've had no problems with it and seems to work very well.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic phone, safer 900mhz!.......2007-04-10

In the current day of 2.4Ghz (same frequency of microwave ovens) and higher phones with potential negative health effects, I was placed to find GE still making a high quality 900Mhz phone!

No complaints at all with this phone, it is feature packed and easy to setup. Once we discovered my son was having negative symptoms from wireless devices that are 2.4Ghz or higher (like WiFi internet) We decided totransition our home BACK to wired phones, we decided we needed just 1 cordless on the main floor. This phone was our choice and we couldn't be more than pleased with it. 900Mhz phones have the added benefit of not constantly "Pulsing" signals from their base stations like the higher phones do.

I really appreciate this product still being available and plan to order extra ones so we don't have to be forced into the unsafe higher frequency ones in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-19

I have to say that this is the best cordless phone I have ever used. I only paid $24.95 when I purchased it about two years ago. I now need a new battery for the first time.
As long as they continue to sell this great phone at such a reasonable price, if I ever need a new phone, it will be this one and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a phone that they can count on.
I even get clear reception on the second floor at my friends apartment. It is an excellent buy.

1 out of 5 stars Does not work and has no support.......2006-12-15

This is by far the worst phone I've ever tried to use. I bought the phone about a year ago, used it a few times, and then put it away until about a month ago, at which point I had lost the instruction manual. When I tried to use it, the language had been set to Spanish somehow, and there is apparently no way (or at least no reasonably obvious way) to change the language setting. Even doing a "full reset" of the phone doesn't reset the language. More significantly, some strange setting prevents it from receiving any calls. It displays the calling number, but it's impossible to answer the call.

There is no online version of the instruction manual (on the website, the spec sheet and the instruction document links both point to the useless spec sheet). I tried calling the support hotline, but it was completely useless -- I just got recorded generic instructions that didn't even pertain to my problems. I couldn't figure this thing out at all, and I'm a pretty decent CS/engineering student.

Overall - terrible user interface, no support, doesn't work. Don't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars MINE WAS A WORKHORSE FOR YEARS!.......2007-08-12

I've had my 1376 for years. Loved it. As long as I replaced it in the charger, I had many two and three hour conversations(and a couple of four hour calls!) with no battery fade. Sound quality both in and out was crisp and clear at all times. It stopped holding memory after five years so I finally replaced it with Uniden 1976, but the incoming voice quality is not as clear and precise as the 1376 so I am here at Amazon to get a new 1376.

4 out of 5 stars Uniden EXI376 900 MHz Cordless Phone.......2007-03-18

Good product, but like most all portable phones these days - way to bulky--don't hang this on a wall - too bulky - you will bump into it and it looks out of place it is so bulky!

5 out of 5 stars Great phone for the price.......2006-05-16

We got this phone several years ago when our last cordless died. When we got it, it came with a second handset and charger base that you can put anywhere, without needing a phone jack - very handy! We keep one upstairs and one downstairs, even though they do get switched quite a bit. There's a nice variety of ringtones and volumes, which is helpful. I like the "page" button to help locate a lost phone. We've had no static or lost calls, I have even used it in our backyard. The only place we don't get great sound is the basement. These phones have stood up to all kinds of abuse, including my baby using them as chew toys - still work great. We have had them at least 2 years, probably longer and haven't replaced either battery yet. We set them on the chargers at night, though occasionally they get left off until they beep from low battery.

An excellent value for the money.

3 out of 5 stars Good for its price, but wont last...........2004-06-08

bought this phone seeing the consumer reports best value.
it was pretty good for a year, now the sound quality is terrible and very staticy. so be prepared to replace it after a year, which isnt that terrible considering the price.

2 out of 5 stars Inferior Quality.......2004-05-05

I am very disappointed in the quality of this model. I purchased two, and I'm returning both. Coverage is poor, and CID does not work in all outlets in my house. Very strange. Uniden customer service pretty much confirmed that this model isn't very good. I'm much more satisfied with my Panasonic. I'm going to order a couple more of them to replace the Unidens.

5 out of 5 stars cheap and work just fine.......2007-08-29

these Uniden phones were inexpensive and work just fine. Only problem is that the bases do not have holes to allow them to be hung on the wall.

1 out of 5 stars this phone is NOT headset compatible !!.......2007-04-01

This may be a perfectly good phone, and I've had great success with other Uniden products. But Amazon's specifications for this product describe it as "headset compatible". This phone has no headset jack, and is most definitely NOT headset compatible. Since I require a headset, you can imagine how happy I am with this product.

5 out of 5 stars A good simple portable phone.......2007-03-30

This isn't a fancy phone and it is not the latest technology. However, it works great and does exactly what it says (and does not interfere with wifi).

In short, buy this if you need a cheap portable phone that works.

4 out of 5 stars This phone is pretty good.......2007-01-07

I have had this phone for over 5-10 years? I don't know how long, but it's been quite awhile. It is a very good, long lasting phone. The only problem I've had with it, is that (as it ages) it picks up a lot of static, and even other conversations of people from who knows where. But overall, this is a very nice phone. It's even been dropped in the sink, and still works~ : ) This is a good buy, if you can stand the static on occasion.

4 out of 5 stars Inexpensive and Works Well.......2007-01-06

I wanted an inexpensive cordless phone that would work well and I got it. Very satisfied.

4 out of 5 stars Decent phone for average users........2007-03-09

I wanted a 900 mhz phone instead of the very small 5.8 ghz phones. I have wireless network and it works just fine. If your looking for an above average 900 mhz phone this phone is just great.

5 out of 5 stars unbelievably good value.......2006-08-24

I can't imagine what caused all the negative reviews on this site. After giving up on several other phones, including Uniden's own 5.8GHz phone whose signal won't penetrate even a single wall, I finally decided to return to el-cheapo 900MHz, nice-long-wavelength analog technology and I was so glad I did! I bought one for myself and tried it, then I bought another for my daughter in college, and now I'm going to buy a third one to replace another inferior 900MHz unit I own (another brand). This unit is crystal clear, it has incredible range, and neither of the two units I bought has ever failed in the year my family has owned them. Two of them work fine in the same house (they don't interfere). And the headphone jack, which is very important to both my wife and me, works great. Most units have speakers whose impedances are mismatches for most headsets, and so you get good volume in the handset but terribly low volume in the headset. Not so with this unit - it sounds great in both the handset AND the headset (headset is NOT included). And on top of all that, the answering machine works great and it is very clear and easy to use. I couldn't recommend this unit more! And it's so inexpensive!

1 out of 5 stars Lots of static.......2006-07-14

The phone has too much static unless you're sitting right next to the console, in which case you might has well have a corded phone.

2 out of 5 stars Worst battery I have ever seen.......2006-05-07

Battery discharges only in 30 minutes of talking. I personally never recommend this item. Answering machine is good but battery is worst.

1 out of 5 stars Static and crappy battery.......2005-08-15

When I first bought this phone about six months ago, I thought I was getting a good deal, but I was wrong. The phone picked up a lot of static and the battery has a very short life, only a couple hours off the charger then it won't work.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent phone for physically challenged seniors.......2007-05-15

My 88 year old mother, crippled with arthritis and suffering from retinal degeneration due to diabetes, enjoys her new phone which she finds is simple to use, easy to see clearly, except for small buttons for "flash" and volume control. You can't have everything, but she is pleased, for her greatest joy is talking to friends and relatives on the phone when she cannot visit them in person. After I purchased this for her for about $20, I saw the exact item in a display at a visually impaired assistance office -- for $60! Go Amazon!

1 out of 5 stars how can i review this item when it hasn't even been shipped!.......2006-08-28

amazon, i would be happy to rate the telephone i ordered 7/27/06, but it has not been shipped yet! in fact, when checking the order status, you still state shipping date from 8/30/06 to 9/17/06 expected! well, i guess you just send these questions out to everyone regardless of the status. well i can't say i like the phone, i haven't even gotten it yet!

4 out of 5 stars Phone solved wife's dialing & hearing problems........2005-10-13

I bought this phone for my wife who was having great trouble with the phone she was using. She has touble seeing & selecting small digit pads and some trouble hearing. This new phone has relatively large keys and a loud volume setting. These two features solved her problems. She loves it!

2 out of 5 stars A Poor Communication Device .......2005-09-21

I bought this phone for my father, 88 years old. He has a hard time while using it in his apartment. The reception is very poor - inconsistent and with interference, even when he is using the channel selection feature. It appears that electronic design of the phone has flaws.

1 out of 5 stars It should be ZERO stars.......2003-07-06

I used the phone for a few weeks, then put it away for a few weeks. When I charged it up to use again, it did not work. I called the customer service number on the phone and got a totally unrelated company who never even heard of these people. So I found a tech support email address on their home page (tech support for the phone, not the page's webmaster, I do know the difference)After a week when there was no response, I bought a new battery and charged it. Still nothing. That was several months ago and still no response from the support email either. It is obvious these people will try to weasel out of the warrantee by not ever finding out what is wrong with the phone. While I pursue it, I bought and am using an AT&T cordless phone. This one remaims plugged in just in case I ever reach someone who will want to try and diagnose the problem.

ASIN: B00001ZWUC

Product Description

Sony SPP-SS965 telephone features High Power Digital Spread Spectrum technology for superior range and interference reduction. Its 900MHz band starts with low interference because it's less crowded than conventional 43-49MHz band. The Digital Spread Spectrum technology provides up to about 100 times more output than other 900MHz systems; so you can carry your cordless phone further-and still carry on a conversation. The Jog Dial feature is used for one-finger access to directory dialing numbers and Caller ID memories; simply push the dial and jog up and down to find the entry you're looking for; push the dial again to dial the number! Dual Backlit LCD Displays (on handset and base) allow you to easily see Caller ID and other information even in a dimly lit situation. Caller ID with Call Waiting allows you to screen the phone number and name of an incoming second call while you talk on the first. A 50-number directory dialing gives quick access to a broad range of frequently dialed numbers; for easy reference, each phone number is identified by the person's name.

Amazon.com Review

The Sony SPP-SS965 900 MHz digital spread spectrum cordless telephone with speakerphone and caller ID offers features that are clearly designed for your convenience and to make your busy life a little easier. The phone is also stylish and sturdy with a base that can be wall-mounted or placed on any flat surface.

The SPP-SS965 includes a keypad on the base for quick dialing with the speakerphone. You can place and answer calls from the base even if you can't find the handset. If you need to locate the handset, however, the intercom button on the base pages the handset with a continuous ring, making it easy to find.

The SPP-SS965 displays caller ID information on both the base and the handset, so you'll always know who's calling before you answer. The caller ID memory can store up to 20 names and phone numbers. With the jog dial feature, you can browse through the list of callers in the caller ID log, or you can access up to 50 speed-dial numbers in the phone's directory. The jog dial is a small wheel on the side of the handset, and in our tests, all of its functions were intuitive and easy to learn. For faster dialing, there are three one-touch presets, perfect for emergency phone numbers. The Sony SPP-SS965 also has a two- way intercom that allows you to talk between the handset and the base--great for communicating with family members who may wander off with the phone.

In our tests, the SPP-SS965 sounded very good. Although its digital spread spectrum technology provides a longer range and better sound quality than other types of 900 MHz cordless phones, we were disappointed that the handset maintained its best quality only within about 40 feet. Overall, however, this high-performance device from Sony has a wealth of features that will simplify your life. -- Megan Dugan

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony SPP-SS965 cordless phone uses high-power digital spread spectrum for superior range and interference reduction--the 900 MHz band starts with low interference because it's less crowded than the conventional 43 to 49 MHz band. A 50-number directory allows you to store up to 50 names and numbers for easy access.

The "Ezfit" earpiece gives you a better coupling to your ear for better sound and increased comfort, and digital privacy uses sophisticated digital speech encoding between handset and base unit to keep your private conversations private. The phone also has a dual keypad (base keypad with speakerphone) that lets you make and answer calls at the base unit. Caller ID call waiting allows you to screen the phone number and name of an incoming second call while you talk to the first (requires specific caller ID with call waiting service from your phone company).

Memory match ringing sounds a distinctive ring if an incoming call matches one of your 50 directory dial numbers (requires caller ID service from phone company). Digital sound quality uses the technology behind the compact disc to achieve amazing voice accuracy; this phone sounds less like older cordless phones, more like a corded phone.

2 out of 5 stars Great sound, for the short time the battery lasts...........2002-01-16

I am a dedicated Sony consumer, so when I bought a digital cordless, naturally I bought Sony. Unfortunately, Sony has frankly **[been bad]** on one of the most important features of this phone - the battery. They obviously cut corners in this one area to add more trinkets to the phone. Which are great - caller id on the base and the handset, scrolling address book on the handset, speed dial memory, speaker phone, etc.; but, if the battery is dead after using the phone for an hour, then what use is the features! I'm not a phone junkie, in fact I hate being on the phone, but I work at home and end up on some long calls which halfway through get cut off and I have to switch to my corded phone across the house from my office. Bummer Sony! I've seen the same complaint on several other Sony cordless phones as well, so maybe I would suggest checking out another brand!

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy it!.......2000-06-19

After doing a ton of research I decided on this phone. It had all the features I needed & I've had only good luck with Sony products. Unfortunately, the phone I received constantly cut out from the first time I used it & had to be sent in for repair to Sony. Sony sent me a brand new one which ended up having the same irritating problem. Amazon gladly refunded my $$.

3 out of 5 stars Is it me or is it Sony?.......2000-06-16

The features of this phone are great for the price. This is my 2nd sony 900 mgz phone. You guys know all the good features, let me tell you the bad, the ones that are making me return this unit. The worst thing of all, drives me crazy is when I talk on the phone, I hear my own voice sort of ringing in the speaker. Another reviewee described it as "tinny." I suppose that's a great way to describe this effect. It's so annoying that I had to unplug this phone. Also, others have griped about this also, why does the base unit's caller ID display have to be continuously illuminated? How annoying. Also, what's the point of having caller ID on the handset if it does not light up during a call? That's useless in dim rooms or at night. All in all, maybe some people can deal with these issues, but for me, I would rather spend more money and get a better phone. Like I said, this is my 2nd sony phone and my last one never had these problems.

1 out of 5 stars Caveat emptor! (Don't buy this phone).......2000-06-14

I own a lot of Sony stuff and usually I'm really impressed with their quality and performance, but this phone is a dog.

Functionally it's great. Very clear sound, excellent range, useful autodial, caller ID on the handset ... nice.

But practically it sucks. There's no battery indicator so you can't tell if how much life it has left. Now, that shouldn't be a problem with the advertised lifetime of the battery (several days on standby, hours worth of talk time). I figured you could put it on the stand every night and you'll be fine, right?

Nope. Talk time on this thing is under an hour fully-charged and, when the battery goes, it just shuts off. No warning at all. And if you've had the thing off the stand for a day or so the talk time is *maybe* 15 minutes. It has cut out on my wife so often that she really hates using it.

This is the worst phone I've ever owned. If I could return it, I would. I can't even in good conscience give it away, so I may smash it to pieces with a hammer so that no one else has to be subjected to it.

My wife was looking at replacements recently and the store clerk said that they got so many of these phones returned that they won't carry them any more. Amazon is listing it as out-of-stock, but I hope they've pulled it completely.

Take my word for it: Don't buy this phone! And, if you're from Sony, fire the entire design team. (It really is THAT bad.)

5 out of 5 stars i looked for a decent phone forever & finally found one........2000-05-19

first it was an escort phone, then it was an at&t, and now it's a sony. and i am finally happy. this phone is great. sound quality, battery life, design & features are all tops. in particular, i like the jog dial feature. very nice. the price on amazon was the clincher. i couldn't find it anywhere else even close to theirs. and on the subject of price... the only things that seemed intriguing (siemens or that ugly panasonic) were way too expensive. i couldn't justify the added $$$. and now that i have the darn thing, i couldn't be happier.

1 out of 5 stars If you want to get frustrated everytime you place a call..........2006-09-12

This phone worked well for a while, then suddenly, the buttons became impossible to push and dial! I can't tell you how frustrating it is trying to dial a phone number pressing and repressing a digit until it finally registers. Also, there must be a ghost that comes along with the phone; several times a week a caller on the other end says, 'I can't hear you, but someone else'? Why does this happen? Well, this system automatically scans for the best channels during calls, therefore you can momentarily be in on a neighbor's conversation. All the company has advised me to do is maintain a safe distance (50 ft radius) of the base! Why bother having a cordless phone? Now, after we've loaded our house with this idiotic phone system we have to go back and spend a bundle re-outfitting! Next time, I'll be sure to check with the opinions of other customers and not buy a "Costco special". ARGHHH!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Phone system.......2003-04-14

My son gave my daughter and me this four line V-Tech system. It is great. You can carry one phone around with you while the others are on the bases so you don't have to run to the phone when it rings. We had a cordless phone, but these phones are small. If you misplace one, you can call it and find it by its chirping. Also, if I need to reach my daughter, I can call her through this system. You can store phone numbers, redial, look to see whom you called. It has so many features that I don't think we found them all. This was the best gift I have received!
