This set uses Philips' exclusive Pixel Plus 2 HD video processor, which provides excellent sharpness natural detail, inc reased depth, vivid colors and smooth and natural motion from standard TV, High Definition signals, and multimedia sourc es. Each pixel of the incoming picture is enhanced to better match the surrounding pixels, resulting in a more natural p icture. The 50PF9630A has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 160-degree viewing angle, a 1500 cd/m2 (candela per square meter) brigh tness rating, and a 10000:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) Other features include picture-in-picture display (via com ponent and HDMI connections), auto volume leveler, adjustable color temperature and sharpness, sleep timer, and V-Chip p arental controls.

The 3D comb filter separates brightness and color signals better in 3D domain to eliminate cross-color, cross-luminance and dot-crawl distortion. It performs field-by-field comparisons of the television image to accurately separate the colo r from the black-and-white information and remove both horizontally and vertically hanging dots, as well as dot crawl, r esulting in a razor sharp image.

The Active Control function uniquely and intelligently optimizes picture quality by measuring and analyzing the incoming signal to automatically adjust picture quality settings. Active Control with Light Sensor uses a sensor to adjust the p icture brightness depending on the room light conditions.

The full-color Ambilight feature provides relaxed viewing and a unique ambiance via a soft light glow on the walls surro unding the TV. Research has shown that watching television with adapted ambient lighting promotes more relaxed TV viewin g. The Ambilight colors automatically adapt to the images on the screen to add a new sensation to the viewing experience . The light can also be switched to fixed colors or various shades of white. CableCARD -- The CableCARD system enables the "Plug-and-Play DTV" functionality as agreed between cable operators and consumer electronics manufacturers. A CableCARD-enabled television witho ut a CableCARD inserted receives high-definition standard TV broadcasts. When a CableCARD is inserted, the television re ceives high-value high-definition, cable programming.

Piece of Junk.......2007-04-16

We took our tv out of the box a week ago, and today it died. The picture simply turned off. We tried to turn it back on, but to no avail. When we called Philips directly they said it would have to be sent in for repair or that we could just take it back to the store.

The store took it back no questions asked, which was nice, because on top of this problem, there were several others. For example, the tv seemed to put out a great deal of heat. There was also a steady buzzing noise coming from the speakers and an obnoxious thin stripe along the left hand edge of the screen. We exchanged it for the Panasonic and we are happy so far!

Has been in the repair shop longer than in our house!.......2006-08-22

Like the other reviewers - just 1 month after purchase this tv started turning off at will, the black plastic frame comes unglued and most infuriating, we get about a 4" wide pink stripe running vertically down the middle of the screen that comes and goes. After many calls and emails to try to get the "on site" repair, turns out we had to lug the tv to a local authorized repair center who kept it for about 6 weeks only to lug it back home and it was still broken. So we lug it back in and it's been at the repair center for 8 weeks and counting despite repeated calls to them and Philips. Philips is not standing behind their relationship w/the repair center nor have they sent the correct parts to fix it. They also won't give us a new tv or extend our warranty. DO NOT BUY THIS TV. Or if you really want one, buy mine.

DON'T BUY........2006-06-29

I had the 42" model for a year. After 8 service calls, Circuit City gave me a new one. This size was discontinued so I tried the 50" It started with the same problems on the first day: turns off and on at will, half the picture goes blank, I could go on. Progressive problems througout the year. Picture is good, ambilight is beautiful (that had a recal) but it the model is a lemon. Before you write a review here, live with the TV for a while.

Dont buy it.......2006-06-04

The picture is good, but it has been nothing but problems. The TV constantly buzzes very loudly. The plastic trim always falls off as well. Best Buy has been out to repair twice, but they cant make it stop buzzing. Im going to return it for a panasonic this week.

Beautiful Sound, Picture and More!.......2006-06-01

This TV has easy an easy to use remote with beautiful, sharp, picture quality. With the Ambilight feature, I've gotten so used to watching the television with this feature I cannot watch without it - It's the BEST - No eyestrain in the darkness and it really puts you in the program. I own a HDMI up-converting DVD player which I hook to the television and it is nice to know there are 2 HDMI inputs so I can add additional peripherals when needed. Further, setting up the Cable Card feature was completely easy; I was new to this feature but my Cable Provider helped me every step of the way. Just a look at the features and you should be impressed. I was especially impressed with the contrast ratio. I'm sure most have seen those televisions where the blacks look gray; with this television the blacks look black and the brights are bright with beautiful in-betweens and bold color. It also might be impossible to use up all the inputs, but I am one for that challenge (with my collection of electronics). I've been a connoisseur of high quality electronics for ages, I still have a large laserdisc collection and the beautiful thing is when inputting the player through the s-video input it actually upgrades the picture! The side jacks are easy to access which makes it easy to plug-in my camcorder and... yes the occasional video game. I was so impressed we bought two of them! One for the family room the other for my personal office. It works and looks great both on the wall and resting on top of an entertainment center. I would recommend this TV over all. I have friends that have gone through a few other lesser known brand name televisions and within a few months they are no longer happy with the performance (especially after they see mine!) I have nothing bad to say. Great quality, great picture.

The Basics

Don't buy it!.......2005-08-28

I purchased the Conairphone TAD1220 on sale at Kmart for $9. It was easy to setup and worked great for 2 weeks. After missing some very important calls I discovered that the machine had stopped recording. It would answer, beep and pretend to record the message, but wouldn't.

Conair will replace the answering machine if I send it back with $9.50 shipping and handling (more than the purchase price). Unfortunately I didn't save the receipt.

Great set of Headphones.......2002-06-21

I am a frequent music listener (more into metal, hard rock, and techno), and i listen in a lot of different places. I also use headphones frequently when I get yelled at about how loud the music is. I always turn to the LT830's. They have excelent bass, good volume levels, and they are comfortable, allowing you to enjoy listening for hours (jsut makes sure that your ears dont start to sweat, cuz then we'd have a problem).

I really appreciated the great 3d sound for computer games as well. I played dungeon siege the other day with these babies and they were excellent.

The sound chanelling in these headphones is superb, with the left and right chanels clearly being heard out of different ears.

Downsides? Ofcourse. They break REALLY easily. They don't have a sound volume controller on the wire, which most of the competition does now a days, and customer support is terrible (but mostly to your advantage).

I was really angry when I my headphones started to crackle one day, and then the next, I pulled them out of my backpack, and where were the earphones, well, they certainly were not on the headphones!! No. They were lying at the bottom of my backpack, broken off from their supports on the top of the headset. I couldn't believe this, and demanded a second pair. I told them what ones i had, and they were all cool with it. They didn't even ask me for the old ones though. You might as well just tell them that they broke, and then you can have them send one out for free to u! The customer support is that unsecure. (but this is to your advantage people). Next, though, after recieving my "new" headphones, they were not ONLY the wrong version, (I had had the LT830 Special Edditions, which sounded better and came with a free pair of In-Ear headphones), but they were refurbished. Very dissapointed with that.

But even though the tech support was bad, the incredible sound and bass and sound channeling is too hard to turn down. All in all, the headphones are the best you can get (quality wise). If you buy these just make sure that you take GOOD care of them so that they don't break, and make sure they know which pair that they have. Peace.
