4 out of 5 stars Better have a PH'd .......2007-09-14

The unit is very nice looking and seems to be of very good quality.
It pumps out the volume very well on my 5.1 speakers & powered 12" JBL woofer.
The remote is cheesy and very difficult to understand. I can't even figure out how to search for tuner stations ? I will say this is my first receiver and I am somewhat clueless but, I build computers for fun and this is more difficult to understand to get working correctly. It wil even work with satellite radio ...The front input jacks are a definite plus+ I would buy this again. Heavy construction.

5 out of 5 stars Comfort Zone For The New Generation.......2007-08-27

Anyone who want a good sound should go with Yamaha. This receiver was very well priced. considering wallet, it was tapped after purchasing HDTV. It was very easy to set up and I have no problem with the system.

5 out of 5 stars Yamaha home theater, exceptional value!.......2007-06-08

Always had good luck with Yamaha electronics, so when I looked to update my home theater system- it was a no brain-er. This model is sold mostly in retail stores in black only. I was happy to find it on Amazon in silver, and wow what a great price. The features take a bit getting used to, but everything you could possibly want is there. Too bad it doesn't have HDMI plugs, can't have everything at this price. I was disappointed that it came with a black remote control, since the unit is silver. I'm enjoying it!

3 out of 5 stars Good price, good sound, bad service.......2007-06-08

This is a great receiver for the money, I spent $180 on it. I hooked it up and it sounded great, better than I expected. The problem was that when watching a DVD the 5.1 surround would not work after stopping, pausing, FFW, or REV the DVD. Even while watching a movie if the sound got really quite sometimes the sound would just stop working. To get it back on I had to turn the power off then turn it back on. I contacted Yamaha about this and they responded pretty fast and asked what type of cable I was using. I told them I was using a digital coax audio cable and told them all the other specifics of how it was hooked up and I never heard from them again. I e-mailed them again but no response. So, I sent it back to Amazon (with no problems) and bought a Harmon/Kardon, which I love. Another problem I had with the Yamaha is that the power button wouldn't work with my Logitech Harmony 880 universal remote. Everything else worked with the remote but I couldn't turn it on or off for some reason. I think if it worked properly it would have been a really nice receiver considering the price, but if you buy one, save your reciept!

Amazon.com Product Description

The Yamaha MCR-E810 mini-system is a great choice for smaller living rooms with its compact profile and 120 watts of total power (60 watts x 2 channels). It also offers two discrete amps and speakers made of finely tuned cabinets and equipped with carefully selected units. It has a single-disc DVD/CD player that's compatible with a good assortment of formats, including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, VCD, and CD-R/RW discs as well as MP3, WMA, JPEG, and DivX digital files. In addition to utilizing a Direct PLL IF Count Synthesizer Tuning system, this model also makes station selection easy. You can preset as many as 40 stations for instant one-touch tuning, and with each one the tuning mode (auto or manual) is also memorized. You can also operate an iPod via the MCR-E810's remote unit with the aid of the receiver's display when using the (optional) Universal Dock.

Its discrete construction precisely places each carefully selected part without dependency on IC chips. The amplifier uses all analog circuits, including the volume section. While it is compact, it includes high sound quality measures scrupulously designed in every detail: a large power supply transformer, high sound quality parts groups (including new capacitors), a high stiffness body with an octagonal section that is resistant to resonance, and large speaker terminals compatible with banana plugs.

The receiver's subwoofer out terminal outputs bass frequencies so you can connect a subwoofer. Adding a subwoofer to your system pays big dividends: not only do you get bigger and better bass sound, but the overall sound field has much greater depth and presence. It also includes a tape/MiniDisc input/output as well as an auxiliary input. The DVD player provides component, composite, and S-Video outputs, as well as digital optical and coaxial audio outputs.

The speaker cabinets are built with internal crossbracing offering a unique wedge structure. This type of cross-braced structure is used in top class speakers and Yamaha engineers are able to make the most of its advantages. It produces a tighter sound and the increased strength cuts down unwanted vibration. And they have the same luxurious and environmentally friendly finish as Yamaha's grand pianos.

Tech Talk
DivX is a compressed digital video format (like MP3) that's based on the MPEG-4 video compression standard. It can reduce the video from a DVD (MPEG-2) to around 10 percent of its original size while still retaining good video and audio quality, enabling you to store several two-hour length movies on burned DVD media.

What's in the Box
Receiver/DVD player, two speakers, speaker cable, remote control (with batteries), AM/FM antennas, printed operating instructions

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-09-01

This is just a wonderful compact system. The key here is pretty much the excellent speakers Yamaha has been making for years. Their NS-10's have been a fixture in recording studios for mixing and these smaller speakers have the same clear, true and vibrant characteristics. All the CD's I have played, including burned CD-R's have played back perfectly with no glitches. I've not needed to hook up the DVD portion so I cannot comment on that aspect.

This unit is priced somewhat higher than many of the units in the $300 price range. If you demand perfection in audio, spend the extra money for this unit. It doesn't get any better in the field of compact systems.

5 out of 5 stars Good ear for music and eye for quality.......2006-12-27

I tried 2 Onkyo's and a Denin (rated as the top micro?) before I ran across this Yamaha. It took just a few minutes for me to get excited about this Yamaha. I believe it to be the best among the four, although all three of the others are high-quality. The lesser of the two Onkyo's sounds a little "tinny" to me, although I liked that it had just a single CD tray (not multiple CD's, i.e. multiples are prone to malfunctioning). The greater Onkyo had a 3 CD tray (I'm all set with that). The Denin was "top-shelf" but a little more complex (operationally) than I wanted to learn...and it seemed to me that the Yamaha's bass was maybe a little better than the "same-priced" Denin's, although I did not listen to them side-by.

Look at the front of the Yamaha 810 reciever. Starting from the right side of the reciever these are the buttons, right to left: Volume (largest dial), Function selector, i.e. CD/DVD or TUNNER or AUX, etc, etc. You can join this to a tape player/recorder, a television, etc. The next dial is Balance and then Treble and then Bass. The last one is the Power. Most (if not all) other micros do not have individual bass and treble dials. I think that the face of this receieve is as simple as it can get. This was one big thing that sold me - simplicity of operation. This was a gift for my elderly parents. He stressed that he did not want one that was complicated - the simpler the better.

Speakers are finished in that thick, super-glossy black.......like a Grand Piano. Speakers are very massive for their small size, i.e. not lightweight. I like the mass. Front of CD player and Reciever are finished with thick brushed aluminum.

There is nothing "chintzy" about this machine.

Back of reciever is packed with all the inlets and outlets you will find on any of the best micros. If you want that super-powerful, deep and voluminous bass sound of a big stereo you simply buy a subwoofer and plug it into the back of the reciever. Yes, all high-end micros should have a subwoofer outlet in back of reciever. I am told by sales people that the subwoofer outlet is the mark of a high-end micro. The subwoofer will have its own AC plug and its own amp. Why buy a big stero anymore? Just buy a high-end subwoofer and plug it into one of these high-end micros.

These are the reasons I have to give the Yamaha 810 5-stars. Yamaha deserves it because they did a fine job designing and building this machine. I hope I feel the same way several years from now.

At the end I must be fair and say that the Onkyo and Denin are both real, quality machines too - nothing "chintzy" here either. You really have to spend the time and make your own choice.

In the Portland, Maine area I will recommend New England Hi-Fi or Tweeters. I bought the Yamaha at Tweeters, although the other 3 fine steros were at New England Hi-Fi. Both stores deserve credit for immeidately giving individual and knowledgeble help.

5 out of 5 stars Love It! .......2006-11-24

Like other Yamaha audio equipment we have bought, this system provides outstanding sound quality. The small form factor and elegant looking design made it a great choice for our living room. The speakers are small enough to be put on a bookshelf or placed on stands. The one drawback is the single CD player, but the sound quality still compels us to give it a 5 star rating.

Product Description

Yamaha RXN600 Home-Theater receiver embraces the convergence of many technologies from audio, video, and computer that can now be associated within a home-theater system. The RXN600 comes equipped with and Ethernet connection for easy integration in a home network. It offers a USB input on the front panel to easily connect your portable audio player or flash memory device and comes equipped with a rear panel port that easily connects to the optional YDS10 iPod Dock. The YDS10 dock lets you listen to iPod music, watch iPod image slideshows, play iPod videos on the best system in your house. Compatibility with DNLA and MusicCAST means that that RXN600 brings you one step closer to creating a seamless environment for sharing digital media and content. When music is encoded in a digital compressed format such as MP3, frequency response suffers in the high and low ranges. Yamaha employs sophisticated digital signal processing with exclusive algorithms to enable playback that reproduces the original quality of the music. The RXN600 brings channels of superior digital audio into your home using XM's revolutionary Connect-and-Play technology (subscription to XM is required). You can configure a multi-room audio system with the ability to listen to 2 different sources at 2 different volume levels at the same time. Simply connect the Zone 2 audio output of this receiver to an external amplifier to power the second zone and control both zones by using the supplied remote control.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All the features are fantastic.......2007-09-09

I researched several yamaha units before settling on the RX-N600. I was skeptical about the network portion of the features. But after using the features I can see unlimited posibilities. Prior to this unit I had a creative external soundcard to get 5.1 out to my 3 small amps. I was happy that I also found a way to incorporate my creative unit into the Yamaha. I can hook up the optical out on the creative along with s video out on my laptop and use windows media player visual through my big screen LCD. It looks great and get a lot of remarks at parties. Now about the standard features of the Yamaha. It does not have the Yamaha auto setup for surround, but with some tweaking you can get almost perfect right away. At the end of my review I will post several important tips to get full enjoyment and sound quality.
The Internet radio is fantastic, although you won't know what the bitrate is, you can tell by the quality of sound to judge which internet channels you want to bookmark. Since this unit has built in ram to buffer incoming channels you can kind of judge the bitrate by he amount of time the buffer runs before music starts. All you need for Internet radio is a highspeed connection. No PC required. And the choice of stations is endless. I estimate over 2000 so far, thousands more if you count podcasts. You can record these sources on an MD but you loose all titles. Speaking of titles they are all clearly displayed on the unit, but to manuever through the directories you will need your TV as a monitor, once you get where you want to be turn off the monitor if you want. Internet radio worked out of the box, my router allowed it to connect and instantly started streaming. The USB thumb drive I store music on to play in my NDS instantly worked after being plugged in the USB port on the units front. I found the quality to be excellent, especially if you use the "enhanced 6 channel". It expands the compressed files and gives you more of the original sound. Now as for the PC media streaming, that is another matter. That took a while to get it to work. But once I had it up and running it works great. The sound from DVD and CD sources will knock you out if you have good speakers. And the sound modeling programs are enough to keep you entralled before you want to customize them. Now for my special tips:

[...]

The next tip for better sound and more efficient driving by the amp section. This tip is in the instructions but easy to miss, If you are using A and B front speakers. Set the speaker ohm requirement to 6 ohms. This will really make your front speakers sing.

Take the time to tweak the sound level outputs and input level trims, this will make your listening time more enjoyable.
For the money you cannot beat this for the sound quality and the features. It also uses a lot less electricity than my other 350 watt amp. The unit will use 55 watts while blasting out decent sound levels. I like the XM radio tuner and will use it but not as much since the internet radio is free. I also do not have an ipod since I use my NDS for portable media and games. So I cannot speak to the ipod functions.
I hope this has helped some that may have been put off by other reviews.

4 out of 5 stars Yamaha Network Amplifier.......2007-08-05

I love the idea that you can hook this up to your wireless home network and access music stored on your computers. I have a D-Link HDD storage unit connected directly to my wireless router and thats where i store all my music and movies. I wanted some way to have a home theater unlock all the music whithought having to dedicate a computer to this. The yamaha amplifier allows you to do this - but you still need a computer to be running a media server software so it can access this. I wish the amplifier could scan hard drives directly and be able to play them directly even when the media server is not up and running. I have a pretty large collection - about 7000 songs and the amplifier does have a problem digesting all of this and showing that in the browser, i think is the biggest thing they should work upon.
Other than that the connections the amplifier has are great. i have always been a fan of yamaha amps and this one has only helped strengthen that.

5 out of 5 stars Great functions.......2007-05-18

Great functions

It Works really nice with the IPod dock. I haven't tried in the network, but will do it soon. Excellent sound.

5 out of 5 stars Go and Buy .......2007-05-14

Very good reciver , I still did not checked the Network coneection, but with my polk audio rm6900 this is a major home system , very recommended the USB option is great.

4 out of 5 stars Great receiver.......2007-04-08

I'm very pleased with the purchase of this receiver. Great sound, decent remote and easy navigation. Drawbacks are no HDMI connectors and a text-based gui for connecting to your home network and listening to MP3's.

Product Description

The powerful and versatile HTR5940 6.1-channel receiver delivers a total of 510 watts of power (20Hz - 20kHz) and features Quad-Field CINEMA DSP and Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology). The HTR5940 is also XM Satellite Radio ready with the addition of an antenna and a service subscription.

Amazon.com Product Description

Take the next step in home theater performance with the Yamaha HTR-5940 digital surround receiver, which boasts 6.1 channels (105 watts x 6) of amplification and a ton of high-end features. The receiver is built around Yamaha's digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which maximizes digital signal quality and minimizes analog circuitry to ensure the best possible sound. ToP-ART receivers include such defining attributes as ultra-high-current amplification, high-performance 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters, and an impressively wide frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz that helps digital audio sources like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD reach their full potential.

Movie buffs will dig the HTR-5940's Quad-Field Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Yamaha's means of simulating the acoustics of a movie theater, stadium, concert hall, or intimate club in the comfort of your own home. The Quad-Field function projects four sound fields into the home theater--a "presence" field in the front and three "surround" fields in the left rear, right rear, and center rear surround speakers, resulting in a powerfully realistic 3-D soundscape. Quad-Field DSP is particularly ideal for newer 6.1-channel formats.

The Cinema DSP's 14 surround programs include multichannel video modes such as Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, and General, each of which creates an optimum sound field for a specific movie genre; standard and enhanced modes for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo: 6, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoders; and a host of other options for movies, music, and video games. Also featured is Silent Cinema, Yamaha's exclusive technology that lets you enjoy multichannel music or movie sound through ordinary headphones, and a Neural Surround decoder that separates and localizes all 6.1 channels with greater clarity than ever before to create an astoundingly detailed soundstage.

What really makes the HTR-5940 unique, however, are the extras, such as a compressed music enhancer that improves the sound quality of MP3s and other compressed formats and a mini input jack on the front panel for connecting MP3 players, iPods, and other portable media devices. Plus, the HTR-5940 not only comes with a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. All you need is a separately sold XM antenna and a subscription to XM satellite radio and you're set. And audiophiles can be assured of the best possible sound when listening to XM radio thanks to its utilization of the Neural Surround mode.

Additional features include an audio delay that adjusts to poorly synched dialogue, A/B or A+B speaker selection, a selectable nine-band subwoofer crossover, a sleep timer, a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages, and a sleek silver housing.

With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5940 can accommodate a host of digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. The rear panel options include two optical digital inputs and one coaxial digital input; three component video inputs and one output; three S-video inputs and two outputs (one assignable); three composite video inputs and two outputs (one assignable); and two analog audio inputs and one output. Also present are a 5.1 multichannel input and a set of front-panel composite A/V inputs for quick connections.

The HTR-5940 measures 17.1 by 6.3 by 15.4 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a two-year warranty.

4 out of 5 stars Digital delay in a solid receiver.......2007-02-18

The one primary feature I chose this unit over others was the digital delay. HDTV takes a lot of time doing video processing and the result is that audio and video can be disturbingly out of sync when playing DVD's. Setting the 5940's delay to something like 130ms brings the audio and video in sync for me with my Sony SXRD TV and Sony DVD player. Unfortunately, the delay is buried several menu options down and doesn't have an on/off function, only a time setting. So it cannot be switched off for TV and on for DVD by my integrated remote control.

Other than that annoyance, it is a well functioning system with a great variety of setup adjustments to tailor its performance in a home theater system. There are a lot of preset sound processing settings to pick from with remote control buttons.

All in all, the unit works great for me and the price was excellent for the features. I waited many months for the silver unit to match the rest of my equipment.

Amazon.com Product Description

Take the next step in home theater performance with the Yamaha HTR-5950 digital surround receiver, which boasts 6.1 channels (110 watts x 6) of amplification and a ton of high-end features. The receiver is built around Yamaha's digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) design concept, which maximizes digital signal quality and minimizes analog circuitry to ensure the best possible sound. ToP-ART receivers include such defining attributes as ultra-high-current amplification, high-performance 192 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters, an upgraded Pure Direct listening mode that provides terrific signal purity, and an impressively wide frequency range of 10 Hz to 100 kHz that helps digital audio sources like DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD reach their full potential.

Movie buffs will dig the HTR-5950's Quad-Field Cinema Digital Sound Processing (DSP), Yamaha's means of simulating the acoustics of a movie theater, stadium, concert hall, or intimate club in the comfort of your own home.

The Cinema DSP's 14 surround programs include standard and enhanced modes for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS, DTS 96/24, DTS Neo: 6, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS Discrete 6.1, Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Pro Logic II, and Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoders, along with several custom options for movies, music, and video games. As with many superior home theater receivers, the HTR-5950 is capable of component video up-conversion. This function takes S-video and composite signals and converts them into component signals to ensure a high-quality picture on your digital TV from any source. No more switching inputs according to which source you're using--rather, they can all go through the same component connection.

What really makes the HTR-5950 special, however, are the extras, such as a compressed music enhancer that improves the sound quality of MP3s and other compressed formats and a specially designed terminal that accommodates separately sold iPod docks, such as the Yamaha YDS-10. Plus, the HTR-5950 not only includes a standard AM/FM tuner, but is also XM satellite radio ready. All you need is a separately sold XM antenna and a subscription to XM satellite radio and you're set. And audiophiles can be assured of the best possible sound when listening to XM radio thanks to its utilization of the Neural Surround mode.

Additional features include an audio delay that adjusts to poorly synched dialogue, a selectable nine-band subwoofer crossover, a sleep timer, a front-panel mini-jack input that connects to portable media players, a night listening mode that lowers the volume during loud passages, and a sleek silver housing.

With a bevy of digital and analog inputs, the HTR-5950 can accommodate a host of digital sources such as DVD players, CD players, video game consoles, digital satellite systems, and much more. 5 out of 5 stars Excellent Receiver!!.......2007-04-04

I bought this receiver specifically to replace a Sony 5.1 AV receiver I purchased just a few years ago. This is the second Yamaha receiver I have in my home now and the sound fields far surpass what Sony, Pioneer, or normal consumer brands offer. This unit performs video signal switching, allowing me to "upconvert" a few S-video connections to a component monitor output. This works well.

I noticed a large audio improvement after replacing my older Sony receiver when listening to DVDs. I also recommend the 6-channel audio mode for music.

This purchase should last me a few more years and again demonstrates the quality Yamaha brings to the AV market. I do recommend this receiver for the average home enthusiast.

5 out of 5 stars great quality product; great price.......2007-04-01

this was my first receiver; it was very easy to setup, sound quality is great.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT PRODUCT, SERVICE PERFECT........2007-01-15

JOB WELL DONE. MY ORDER WENT SMOOTHLY, THEY ANSWERED ALL THE QUESTIONS I NEEDED TO KNOW. THE RECIEVER WAS PRICED LOW, SOUND IS GREAT, THE DIRECTIONS FOR ALL THE HOOK-UPS WERE EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND IT LOOKS GREAT. JOHN ROCHE, ORDER #231080

5 out of 5 stars Nice Amp.......2007-01-05

For less than $300 this is an excellent amp with a good remote. All the AV features you'll need for home theatre use and not difficult to setup if you follow the manual. I'm no audiofile but unless you want to spend $1500 and up for fancy speakers systems this should be all you'll need. I have it hooked up to a set of JBL SCS180-S surround 6-1 speakers and sound is great...amp, speakers and cables for for a little over $500.

5 out of 5 stars Great value.......2007-01-01

This is a great A/V receiver and an amazing bargain: it compares favorably with other units I looked at up to the $700 price range. The one feature it lacks, HDMI switching and up-conversion, is often problematic anyway, because the industry is in the middle of changing to the new 1.3 HDMI standard. In any case, the Yamaha does a fine job of component switching and composite to component conversion. The optional iPod dock works well (but it took me a while to figure out that it is necessary to switch the remote control from AMP to SOURCE using the side slide toggle before pressing the DISPLAY button to activate the on-screen display; except for this omission, the users' guide is pretty well written).

    5 out of 5 stars I'm a Yamaha man now.......2007-06-17

Impressive sound box. I migrated from Panasonic systems after some quality problems to this Yamaha and there will be no looking back.

Power seems more than ample for the size of our media room; about 12' x 20'. There are a myriad of input options. I've successfully used the multichannel inputs as well as the traditional RCA inputs. Note that you can also channel your video feeds through it on their way to the final monitor in your system.

Of note, I use this with a PC media center. However, I'm sure it would set up just as well and easy with a more conventional DVD / CD / VCR / TV tuner as sources.

5.1 channels are more than adequate for me. I know the current thing is towards having some unholy number of speakers scattered from hades to breakfast - the quality of the 5.1 from this box is very pleasing and very realistic for films and music. I'd have to see a drastically better system than this to convince me to burn more cash on a more cutting-edge receiver.

The box does generate some expected warmth. Something with this much power probably just will. Not a complaint, but I may put a small fan in our media cabinet.

Setup was not hard. Take a few minutes and read the instruction pack. They make good sense and you'll be able to choose the style of sounds reproduction that best suits you.

4 out of 5 stars Yamaha multi channel receiver.......2007-05-12

Item fit the need I had exactly. Works and sounds good. Satisfied with purchase and delivery

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent receiver!.......2007-05-07

The Yamaha HTR-5930SL has so far been an awesome receiver! The sound that this pumps out is wonderful - crisp, loud FM stereo; floor shaking movie sounds - this thing is great. It has countless connection possibilities, is XM-ready, and can easily be programmed by a universal remote (I use my Comcast cable remote with it). I hooked it up with a $200 5 speaker Yamaha surround sound system (nothing like my parent's Bose Flagship system) and the sound is impeccable. Great receiver, great price, and it can make any speaker system sounds like a million bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Great receiver !.......2007-05-04

I'm upgrading from a Panasonic SC-HT640W (you know, one of those complete Home Theater Systems with a 5 Disc Changer and wireless sorround speakers). I decided to become a little more serious about Home Theater and, After reading many reviews, I decided to go with this receiver. Also ordered the Infinity TSS 450 Home Theater Speaker System and the Sony DVDPNS75H Upscaling DVD player. This thing rocks !!. I'm very impressed with the power and features of this unit, specially for its price. It was also easy to set up (I received the speakers first so I had them installed when the receiver arrived). I know there are more professional (and expensive) receivers out there, but I couldn't be more happy with the sound quality and power of this Yamaha Receiver.
Would recomend to any one !!!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Bargain!.......2007-03-22

I purchased this receiver and paired it with a set of Jensen JHT525 5.1 Home Theater Speaker System ($60). It sound great! The power of this receiver is not very high, but it creates enough volume for a bedroom size room where I have set it up. I found the menu system to set up the reciever a bit involved, but it's very intuitive once you get some practice. I love the Dolbe PL II feature! I turns any CD or VHS movie into 5.1 Surround sound. I especially like the 5 Channel Stereo setting for playing music.

    Amazon.com Product Description

Yamaha's YSP-1100 Digital Sound Projector provides true multi-channel surround sound from a single component. As amazing as it seems, the YSP-1100 can actually deliver multi-channel sound that surrounds listeners the same way that sound from front, center and rear speakers does. DVD movies and other digital sources sound just the way they are supposed to. Dolby Pro Logic II is included, so even 2-channel TV sound can be heard in glorious multi-channel surround. Remember, this is true surround sound, not virtual surround, which can cause listening fatigue. This model features 40 built-in beam drivers and 2 built-in woofers, along with 42 corresponding digital amplifiers.

The YSP-1100 precisely controls the orientation of sound by focusing it into beams. The center channel sound is heard directly, while the sounds from other channels are heard after reflecting off the walls surrounding the listener. SRS's TruBass technology uses harmonics to provide deep and rich bass response. The result is an excellent solution for video enthusiasts who wish to build their home theater systems around larger flat screen TVs and desire a neat, uncluttered, unobtrusive system to match the interior of their room.

Five selectable sound settings allow users to choose between 5-Beam Mode, Stereo Mode, 3-Beam Mode, Stereo+3-Beam Mode and My Beam Mode. The YSP-1100 has a wider soundstage than its predecessors, affording more optimum listening positions within a room. My Beam mode allows users to focus sound to a specific position in their room at the touch of a button to avoid disturbing others.

Yamaha's CINEMA DSP technology, which offers seven audio programs compatible with the Dolby Digital, DTS, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS Neo:6 sound formats, creates realistic soundscapes in any room. For late night movie and music enjoyment, the YSP-1100 features a Night Listening Enhancer mode that allows dialog and quiet passages to be heard clearly, even at low volumes. The TV Equal Volume mode prevents sudden bursts of sound from TV programs and commercials.

The YSP-1100 offers simple video input selection with a multi-language onscreen display. Video can be selected from any of two component inputs to a component output, or from three composite inputs to a composite output with superimposed onscreen display menus in any of four languages (English, French, German and Spanish). The rear panel offers 2 optical/1 coaxial digital and 2 analog audio input terminals, 3 composite video inputs and 1 composite video output terminal, 2 component video inputs and 1 component video output terminal, subwoofer output terminal, remote in, RS-232C interface and terminal for the IntelliBeam optimizing microphone and IR OUT terminal on other connection panel.

4 out of 5 stars Yanaho Digital Sound Projector is a "home run".......2007-07-14

We wanted to add big sound to our new HD TV but didn't want to run wires under the carpeting (or hire someone to go into baseboards and walls). So, when we heard the Yamaha digital sound projector the first time we knew it was a winner. We have a big room so the big Yamaha with 40 speakers and 2 woofers was the solution. Also had to add the Yamaha sub-woofer to get the full range of sound. Easy to hook up and adjust using the instructions. This is a great solution to big sound using the projection system to bounce sound around to room. Highly recommend this product.

5 out of 5 stars Great product.....if you have the right room.......2007-05-15

This is a great product if you have the right room setup. The people who experience problems or only hear sound from the front of the speaker either have the wrong room type or did not set up the speaker correctly. I have a rectangular living room with a half wall for a stairway on the left and the couch against a set of windows. I knew before buying that I would not get clear rear channels, but then again I can't fit speakers back there either. Other than that it sounds great, this thing engulfs the room in sound, I hear the side channels all the way back to the wall, and everything is crisp and clear. Definitely get the recommended subwoofer. But like I said, do your research, if you don't have the proper room setup don't waste your money. The yamaha website has alot of information.

4 out of 5 stars If looks are more important than surround sound..........2006-12-18

....then buy this enclosure. I have it and like it, but frankly the sound dosen't seem to come from anywhere but right in front of me (no side, rear etc). However given my displeasure at looking at my old setup (5.1, sub, speaker stands, wires all over)I've got to say I don't mind.

For the money, ease of setup and the lack of clutter I'd recommend it. If you're an audiophile please pass.
