Better late than never ..........2006-08-12

We needed to know if this unit (Philips DVD 782C) was compatible with DVD+RW disks so I Googled it and found this Amazon listing.

We were totally amazed to find the reviews we found ... and wish we had done this years ago INSTEAD OF SPENDING ALL THIS TIME STRUGGLING WITH THIS POOR EXCUSE OF A DVD PLAYER. We have spent countless hours MR. Clean'ing and SkipDr'ing disks just to get them to play (and sometimes even that didn't work).

Just in case anyone else comes along, take the excellent advice given several times in this collection of reviews ... RUN THE OTHER DIRECTION WITHOUT QUESTION IF SOMEONE OFFERS YOU THIS DVD PLAYER.

Now, we do NOT believe this is a fundamental problem with Philips. We have, and have had, many fine products sold by Philips. We are guessing this particular DVD player was the result of some very poor product planning that went very badly before, during and after the fact. Hopefully the person(s) responsible has (have), per usual corporate practice, been promoted farther up the ladder where they can no longer inflict this kind of pain on Customers.

P.S. We tried to give this product "0" stars but Amazon requires at least "1" star. Probably a quid pro quo agreement of some sort we imagine.

This is a terrible DVD player.......2006-06-16

It is very difficult to get the player to play many of my DVD titles that work just fine elsewhere. It also takes an abnormally long time for the unit to recognize and play a DVD. It responds sluggishly to commands and it frequently just freezes and will not respond to any commands. I would stay away from this thing.

I owned this this player.It could never play a dvd,without skipping...I exchanged,the unit 3x,with no luck.Finally,it only played cd discs...I sold this set for 5 bucks,at a flea market!!If you see this model,run the other way...Check out the feedback,from my fellow,reviewers...I hope this helped you..Thank you Stewart L.

This DVD player isn't worth the space it takes up in your entertainment system. I've had exactly the same problem as everyone else - skipping really badly; didn't matter which position I selected in the carousel. I think I was able to watch 3 movies without disruptive skipping over the last 1-1/2 years. Though I did purchase another one once I realized this was a problem, I kept trying to see if I could figure out what was wrong with the Phillips. I initially thought the DVD was dirty or defective, only to find it played fine in my portable DVD player. I finally disconnected the Phillips and am ready to toss it. I won't even donate it to a thrift store for fear that some family may look forward to using it only to be at least as disappointed and frustrated as I was. Do NOT purchase this DVD player unless you're a glutton for punishment.

Late Review But In Full Agreement.......2004-05-25

Unfortunately my wife and I purchased this "product" without reading the posted reviews here. ALL are entirely accurate! I cannot calculate how many hours I have spent trying to figure out what is wrong. No loading, skipping, freezing, not OPENING when it freezes, all down the line, combined with 100 trips to and from the video stores to exchange their "defective" DVDs. My wife was firmly of the belief the DVDs were just "dirty" but I finally decided (this agrees with one of the reviewers) there is a balance problem in the drawer. When there is a no-load, jiggling/adjusting the drawer sometimes (not always) fixes it, but only until the next time, and will not stop the freezing problems. If my wife had a dime for every time I said "this thing is a piece of @&*!" she would be a millionaire. This is very late but if this product is still on the market in ANY form stay many miles away. And Philips' arrogant lack of response (as reported; I have no personal experience here) is virtually criminal in this day and age.

Totally Awesome TV.......2003-06-25

I went to the store to look around and compare TVs. I thought I was going to purchase a Sony, but when I saw this Hitachi 36UDX10SA 36" TV, I couldn't keep my eyes off it. As I continued to roam the store I always ended up back at the Hitachi. I purchased the last one, took it home and my wife totally loves it!! I thought there was a problem with regular cable shows (non-digital) but I found a setting in the TV that clears the picture and sound. I love this TV. I HIGHLY recommend this TV set.

Don't buy Hitachi Products.......2002-03-02

We purchased a Hitachi 50" t.v. from Circuit City and we've had nothing but problems with it. We purchase the 5 yr. extended warranty and on a 5 year old t.v. it's been in the repair shop every year since the 2nd year of ownership this time it's been in for the last 2+ months with no delivery in sight and no satisfaction in sight, nor can we be promised that the problems will be solved on this repair trip. Hitachi will do nothing past 1 year and the warranty people could care less. The Hitachi name no longer holds the credibility it did of years ago. BUYER BEWARE! Best to look into another brand and even an other store to check out their fine print warranties before spending hard earned money.

Breathtaking picture!!!.......2002-01-21

We recently went shopping with every intention of buying a Sony Wega. In fact, we were actually in the act of paying the salesman for the Wega when we noticed the 32UDX10S over his shoulder and COULD NOT TAKE OUR EYES OFF IT!

One thing that had bothered us about the Wega and the other digital tv's in the same price range was the horizontal banding lines. You had to get pretty far away not to see them. It was something we just figured we would have to live with because we were limited by our price range, but the 32UDX10S on display had no visible banding at all! Even when we got right up to it. The way the pixels are laid out you get a PERFECTLY resolved picture even when you are inches away from the screen (not that you'd watch that close).

It was really amazing to discover that the price for the 36UDX10S was in our range. We bought the 36" model and have been watching it for two weeks. I had some reservations before it arrived because it isn't a flat screen but there is barely any reflection when the screen is on. Just that great big, gorgeous picture! The clarity of the picture is particularly noticeable on digital channels or DVD. Movies on HBO or DVD look so clear and amazing it puts actual theater viewing to shame.

We have been happy with the sound quality. We don't have a home theater system so we are listening through the tv's speakers and we do get a good surround sound effect. We were able to hook up our stereo system speakers to the tv and that even enhanced the effect. On viewing my Moulin Rouge DVD we did have to play with the sound settings a bit to be able to hear both the dialogue and the music to our satisfaction. Turns out the "music" sound preset worked best.

The only negative we've discovered is that stations that are not broadcasting digitally can look slightly blurry. This is more a function of how good the tv is that you notice the blurriness on non-digital broadcasts because the picture on digital broadcasts and dvd is so perfectly clear and breathtaking. Also, HDTV is not yet available with our cable company. We get digital cable and supposedly Time-Warner will be coming out in spring with HDTV technology. I can hardly wait. If this tv looks so great now I can assume I will be blown away with HDTV!

Now the only challenge is to drag myself away from the couch!

Worthless!.......2001-12-30

The cartridge lid was difficult to pry off despite the tool provided. Once opened, the cratridge WAS easy to refill with the ink's applicator tips. However, the real trouble began once the cartridge was filled and the lid successfully replaced. The ink continuously leaked from the bottom of the cartridge, causing it to spread all over the printed wiring cable. (This after I left it sitting on several layers of paper towels for 15 minutes.) When I returned the cartridge to my printer, the ink continued to leak, and got all over the inside of my printer. Now, when I hit print, the printer goes through it's usual workings, but produces a blank sheet of paper. I believe the leaky ink may have ruined the wiring cable inside the printer.
Don't buy these refill products! They are not worth the money, headache, hassle, or mess!

Save your money and don't buy this worthless refill kit. I tried it and after following the directions I was never able to get any decent printing out of the refilled cartridge and had to go and buy an HP replacement cartridge. I wish Amazon.com would quit carrying it to prevent anyone else from wasting their money. If they had 0 stars that is what I would give this product it is nothing more than a piece a garbage which is where it and the cartridge I tried to reuse ended up.

Cost effective color.......2000-09-10

I have been using this DataProducts refill system for a couple of years. I have a greeting card design business. So you can understand how many cartridges I would go through normally. It was cost prohibitive for me to keep buying new cartridges. What could be easier! The instructions that are provided are easy to follow. Other refill systems have you fill a plastic syringe then refill your cartridge. DataProducts makes it easy in one less step, by refilling directly from the ink bottle. If you are trying to keep costs down don't buy another new cartridge, use this refill system!

Come on Iriver............2005-08-21

This is by far the worst 185.00 I've ever spent! This little gadget is not all its cracked up to be. It has lots of features, but thats about the only thing its got going for it. Even though it has all of these features, they are so hard to use. Not only that, if you wanted to transfer songs to it, you can, but if you then wanted to upload them on another computer, you cant. Not only that, when you try to download songs onto it, it occasionally freezes up. Please get a rio instead of Iriver. I wish I would have. The forge is so much better!

Almost Perfect for my needs.......2005-08-02

I spent a long time researching mp3 players before purchasing one. I needed multiple capabilities: internal microphone for voice recording, fm receiver/recorder, data storage, and, absolutely most important, line-in recording. This player is the whole package (with the slight problem that data storage requires a firmware alteration).

There are a few minor setbacks with this device:

1 - You cannot upload mp3s from your player to a computer without first tweaking the firmware or renaming the file. Why bother with such ridiculous attempts to "prevent piracy", especially if so easily overcome?

2 - The software that comes with it is also limited and somewhat clunky. Transferring files from cpu to player was frustrating at first, because the player organizes the files in the same order that they are transferred, which was alphabetical until I changed my ripping software's file naming conventions to include track numbers. Why not enable id3 tags?

Of course, these complaints are minor, and once I was aware of these limitations, I quickly altered my usage of the player to alleviate the aggravation. The microphone quality is good, the volume, sound fidelity, and line-in recording capabilities are outstanding, the color screen is nice (although it probably adds $50 to the price unnecessarily), the rechargable battery is fantastic in terms of both life and recharge time, the kbps settings for recording are customizable...in short, the device is great, nearly perfect, and, depending on durability (it's only been a month), will be in use for several years.

Bravo to iriver, I'm sure their future products will be top of the line.

Excellent Little Player.......2005-07-07

Small compact player with FM Tuner. I attended a convention recently where the program was broadcast on an FM channel. I was able to record the program without any problems. This player has met all of my expectations.

Impressive but not perfect.......2005-05-11

Well I've been using an iRiver 256mb for a couple of years now and decided to upgrade.
This is a great device I got it set up quickly and the battery was already fully charged when it arrived which was a nice plus.
The sound on this is great I loved my 256 but the sound had to be all the way up at times to hear stuff when on public transit to and from work. No so with this baby I had it at half the volume I used to use and it sounds clear and fantastic.
What was also nice is the earbuds, everyones ears are different so this may not apply to you but I find mine extremely comfortable. I had just bought a new set by Sony two-three weeks ago and they hurt my ears badly but these fit perfectly!
Since I'm already a devoted iRiver user the software setup was no big deal and I like the updates to the Music Manager.
I don't have a USB 2 so I can't tell you how fast it is but it isn't any slower than my original iRiver so that's just fine with me.
Also I'm not having any issues with the buttons getting pressed as another reveiwer has. But I have the protective cover they include over my player so maybe that helps?
Ok there is one glitch to this thing that is making me nuts. When the power is running low you cannot do anything; you cannot turn the volume down, move to other tracks and the screen will not lightup, you can't even turn the damn thing off..you have to just let it run all the way down.
That is very annoying and I hope that is something they can fix in future models.

great player, but with a few quirks.......2005-04-24

First off, this mp3 player produces the best sound I have ever heard. It is better than ipods, the iriver h-340, and the samsung yp-mt6; I know because I have owned all of them. The ifp-999 blows all of them away by miles. And it is VERY loud!

Now for the quirks. The buttons on the side are great in theory, but they suck in practice. I'd much rather have them recessed, so they didn't get accidently hit all the time. Next, the headphone jack and the hold button are right next to each other. Bad design. Nearly every time I try to move the hold button (and you have to use it constantly, because if you don't, you activate whatever button you accidently hit) I first have to twist the earphone plug out of the way. It gets a little maddening after a while.

And last of my complaints is that darned iriver menu structure. I was hoping it would be virtually identical to the menu structure on the h-340, but they have more differences than similarities. It looks like it'll take me another month to figure it out. Why do things like this need to be so difficult?

Despite these problems, This player still rocks, big time. Oh, and the rechargable battery is awesome. All in all, a very nice player.
