    Product Description

The IBM Deskstar 75GXP disk drives combine the performance and capacity to handle a wide range of advanced desktop and audio/video applications. The IBM Deskstar 75GXP incorporates innovative new technologies to greatly enhance system performance - delivering an internal transfer rate that tops the industry average by 27 percent. Glass media, differential preamplifier, and fifth generation GMR heads enable this level of performance by increasing track capacity an average of 41 percent. A thermal monitor helps ensure data reliability at this high rate. The industry's greatest areal densities provide popular capacity points while reducing the number of components and increasing reliability. The first desktop drive with the IBM safety ramp feature (head load/unload capability) helps protect data by moving the heads off the media surface when powering down. In addition, a laminated top cover and ceramic spindle bearings reduce drive acoustics by up to 7 dB. IBM Deskstar drives utilize proven IBM technologies such as TrueTrack servo and No-ID sector formatting. IBM Drive Fitness Technologies, a set of diagnostic tools, include award-winning Drive Fitness Test (DFT), S.M.A.R.T. Self Test, and error logging.

2 out of 5 stars High perforemance but quality low........2004-10-13

After two years of medium workload HDD became extremely noisy and show error: "Excessive vibration". IBM replaced my drive with USED REFURBISHED HDD. I didn't make mistake. I don't know what was first USED or REFURBISHED. But anyway drive body has a lot of testing tags and scratches that it was not really matter how it was used. I just want to mentioned I got same problem with TWO DIFFERENT HDD BOTH IBM 180GX 60Gb. BOTH FAILED AFTER TWO YEARS ON DIFFERENT COMPUTERS.

1 out of 5 stars It was fine while it worked..........2002-07-29

I was very satisfied with this drive when I first installed it. It was quick and quiet. However, after only six months of operation, it died on me. I was able to retrieve most of my data in time, but the return process was a battle. I would not recommend this drive or any other by IBM due to their (now) well-known reliability problems.

1 out of 5 stars My drive failed me!.......2002-05-11

My IBM DeskStar drive failed me. I've owned it for less than 4 months. However, I did irretrievably lose important data. A speedy harddrive is useless if it is not reliable.

I was unaware IBM DeskStar's history of reliability problems prior to this purchase. (I've owned many computers and drives, and although I've had my share of problems in the past, I've never had a hard drive quit on me like this one did). I will be replacing it with a Western Digital.

While it WAS functioning, it did work beautifully.

5 out of 5 stars Very quiet and very fast.......2002-03-13

I installed two of these drives in my most recent computer and I'm very satisfied. The 60GXP line from IBM is a successor to the earlier 75GXP. (Yeah, I know. Higher number is usually the later product. Not so in this case. Long story not worth telling -- but never let engineers choose your marketing names .)

The fact that somebody sued IBM is about as relevant (and newsworthy) as a report that it rained in Seattle last week. Lots of lawyers in this world, and lots of money in IBM.

Aside from obvious precautions like not dropping them when you install a drive, the most important factor in drive reliability is cooling. The computer cases used by volume manufacturers are thermally balanced for the configurations they sell. Whether a particular case will tolerate more heat load depends on the number of high-temp options you ordered with the computer or installed afterward, the temperature of your working area, and to some extent the budget pressure put on the design engineer. (Always assuming you bought the computer from a major supplier that actually employs engineers. The result from a rack-em-stack-em house is merely random.)

I'm putting a third unit of this IBM drive in my computer this week. That's why I happened on this page -- but my case is custom unit specifically chosen for high cooling capacity and lots of air movement. If you're choosing a drive to ADD to your existing computer, you should seriously consider a drive cooling kit. This drive will fit in a small bay, but is likely to bake there. It is better to install it into a drive cooling kit that provides a fan and a heat sink. The resulting package fits into a 5.25" bay and will keep the drive happy for a long life.

Good product. Recommended by this graduate design engineer, even if not all store clerks agree with me...

1 out of 5 stars Do NOT buy an IBM hard drive - they FAIL.......2002-02-20

I lost 2 months worth of data - thousands and thousands of dollars worth of time. It was my backup drive. Now another one has failed on me. I had a hard time diagnosing it, because the system could not detect the other drive in my system, after the IBM failed. I thought it was a software problem. Then the drive started buzzing. My husband removed the drive, and then our computer worked again. When I shake it, it rattles. I talked to a guy in a computer store, and he told me the drives are a tragedy. He didn't even want to look at it. He didn't even want it in his store. He said there was nothing he could do for me. He suggested Seagate, or Maxtor, or just about anything but IBM. He said IBM do not make good products. He said he would not even carry their junk. He advised me not to exchange it with IBM. He said the replacement would fail just causing more trouble. He told me to "throw it in the lake," but I think I'll just throw it in the trash.

    1 out of 5 stars Very poor.......2003-11-06

I am an IBM hard drive victim. After just 7 months. Out of the box I had a loud whirr. But it worked so no more of that...Just piled loads of important data on it. Then.....

Clunking harddrive, although not very frequent.

Then eventually corrupted files, crashes on any surfice test.

And now fails to load. New Maxtor goes strong for more than 2 years.
NEVER buy IBM. Not one. Bad news.

3 out of 5 stars I have trouble sleeping at night...........2003-05-08

I have been running a Deskstar 75 GXP 60gb around the clock for almost 1½ years now but a while back it started sounding kinda weird. It's a loud whining and scrapy sound with some faint clicking. I thought to myself that the drive was going to be dead in a matter of days but what do you know, it's kept running perfectly, without any data loss or bad sectors. For 6 months now, the drive has been running fine. Amazing. The actual problem tho is that since my computer is running some servers it has to be online all night, and it's just besides my bed, so now i'm kind of just hoping for the drive to crash so i have a reason to get a new one. Maybe then I can get a good nights sleep.

    2 out of 5 stars IBM Deskstar 75GXP line.......2002-10-12

Yes. I recently Purchased 2 IBM Deskstar Drives, 1 Deskstar 75 GXP 60.4 GB hard drive, and a Deskstar 75GXP 30.7 GB, and My G/f's computer is running a DTLA-305020 20.5 GB hard drive. The first time i had a drive fail was earlier this year, when i upgraded a 400 mhz Celeron to 1 GHZ. I was happily screwing down my DVD drive when i heard that all familiar sound while loading Windows XP Professional. "Scratch,Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," "Click,Click,Click,Click,Click,Click," And i got a File Error. I rebooted, hoping for the best, and got the same, and the drive would not recognize in the BIOS. Ok. Ran IBM's DFT came up and said Bad Sectors found, Ran Erase Disk, Drive has been working Flawlessly to this day. 2nd One. IBM Deskstar 75GXP 60.4 GB. After loading my operating systems and Downloads/Mp3's , after a week of having the drive, it did the same thing, "Scratch, Scratch,Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," "Click,Click,Click,Click," The horror the horror, only having half of my stuf backed up on cds' i lost 35 GB of stuff. Ran DFT, Bad Sectors, Ran Erase disk, cleared the drive, working great. 2 days ago. Same thing after loading all my data on it again. "Scratch,Scratch,Scratch," ,"Click,Click,Click,Click,Click," ok This was enough, and to top it all off, it was beeping and clunking, This drives had it!!! Wont even recognize in BIOS anymore.
    3. Had a IBM Deskstar 75GXP 30.7 GB harddrive do the same thing, And I thought IBM was supposed to make Excellent drives?? What happened?? MY Advice to you is NOT to buy another deskstar if you can help it. Im sticking with Samsung, Seagate, or MAxtor. My 40 GB samsung is still going strong since day 1.
    ...

    1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware..........2002-05-08

Well, let's put it this way... I have seen quite a few hard disks crashing in my past 20 odd years working with computers. Usually is starts with some read errors per months slowly accelerating... allowing for corrective action, such as getting a new drive and mirror the existing drive onto it, removing the faulty one... happily plotting along.

But this time it was all different! Seven days after the first read errors, the errors turned into write errors. I got a new drive, mirrored it, and -- believe it or not -- the existing drive died, producing a clonking noise, ten minutes after the disk had been mirrored.

... ethics has become a rare species... why admit having produced a lousy disk drive... the waves will calm... and IBM disks will be bought again.

So far BASF has produced a lousy type of disk drive (~1984), Maxtor in 1989, Western Digital in 1991, and IBM in 2001. So far I haven't bought those brands again.
Despite Seagate being perceived (by many) as second choice, I have used more Seagate drives than any other brand, but I have never experienced a bad one. The funny bit is, IBM has utliled Seagate SCSI drives in the NetFinity server series.
    What does this tell you?

All I can say: I wouldn't buy this type of hard disk... and IBM would be silly not to take it off the market.

    Best of Luck, Max

This is the model which amazon fails to tell you. When I ordered it I did not quite know what I was getting. The drive is the latest greatest drive from IBM. Make sure your motherboard will support ATA-66 or 100 before ordering. It was easy to install. It was easy to copy my old drive to the new one with provided floppy. It has a 2MB DATA BUFFER AND 8.5 ms Average Seek Time.

4 out of 5 stars Great machine, annoying software.......2007-08-26

      1. You need and internet connection to activate the software that comes with the printer, and you need the software to be able to use the robotic functions of the printer.

      2. The printer reports it's low on ink about 100 discs before it actually runs out of ink, forcing you to either change the cartridge or click through a dialog box for each disk, so you can't leave a batch unattended.

-- Other than those annoyances, it's a great machine for the price. I've made a few thousand DVD's with printed covers and the machine has performed well.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD duplication in a box.......2007-08-05

The Bravo SE disc publisher is one of those neat (if somewhat expensive) inventions that any small video production business (or business office) should have. Very easy to use (with one exception) both for creating disc labels and for duplicating and then printing CDs or DVDs. Up to 20 discs can be processed automatically (you can always add more) and is fun to watch (at least the first two times). The process is fast as it burns DVDs at 16x while simultaneous printing. I use discs from a local member only chain and the work great. One caveate, the label creation program is setup for print to the hub discs, you have to be carefull that images/text for large hub discs don't fall into the non-printing area (but you can create label templates to aid in that).

              Breakthrough Proprietary Phono Equalization

Grado's model PH-1 phono preamp represents the successful solution to one of the most complex technical challenges in the field of audio that Grado Labs has ever tackled. The company's design goals were to create a truly superb sounding phono preamp that would work equally well with both low and high output cartridges with negligible noise. Furthermore, the phono preamp needed to have ultra-wide band pass, high overload, virtually perfect RIAA amplitude and phase coherency, and very low output impedance.

It's no great surprise that Grado succeeded in its design goals, and succeeded wildly. The PH-1's superb performance is right up there with its highly acclaimed phono cartridges, headphones, and the world-renowned RA-1 headphone amplifier. But despite the heavy R&D, the price of PH-1 is surprisingly light. You can pay a whole lot more and still not touch the superior sonics of the affordable PH-1.

              Problems of Traditional Equalization Approaches

The breakthrough circuitry of the PH-1 doesn't rely on the time-honored methods of passive or active equalization circuits. The relative advantages and disadvantages of these old methods are very well known. The passive preamp approach is characterized by problems of first-stage headroom and second-stage noise. This is due to the 40 dB high frequency insertion-loss of the passive network itself. Phono stage gain is frequency dependent with the result of too little feedback at the low end and too much at the high end. Of course, both extremes are sonically non-optimum and unacceptable.

The more commonly used active equalization stage provides solutions to the classic passive circuit problems, but it also comes with a whole new set of problems. These difficulties arise out of the subtle ramifications of the classic negative feedback theory. The RIAA cha

                Product Description

The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is a Windows-based terminal popularly referred to as a "thin client". A Windows-based terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a network to a Windows NT Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix MetaFrame software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. But the thin client is just a part of that overall solution.A thin client Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. Compaq thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure. Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department. While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators), in environments that would be ideal for the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20.
