Not bad for a second camera, but..........2003-10-19

This was the second digital camera I picked up, to replace an early one that was fine for the time, but...

The PDC640 takes decent pictures "for the web," as others have said. If that, and simple needs, are all you want, great. Do yourself a favor, though, and pick up a USB media card reader. The software and serial cable are not supported under WinXP, or on a Mac - but the images are stored on the card as .jpg files, readable anywhere. The USB reader will be *many* times faster than the serial cable, as well, and no special software is needed.

If you print the pictures (full page) you'll notice some problems - but if you're to the point of printing pictures, you'll want a higher resoution camera anyway. It also takes a LONG time to charge, and several seconds between shots to recharge. Battery life really depends on what batteries you buy - cheap ones, it'll eat like a kid with candy. Buy decent batteries (or rechargables) and they'll last a long, long time.

When the batteries are ready to go, though (1/4 left in the indicator) the pictures get awfully dark - you can see them get darker and darker. The viewscreen will, of course, eat them faster.

If you need high resolution, zoom, etc. this isn't the camera for you. For quick family pics, though, it's fine.

Very Good For Beginners But Needs More Resolution.......2002-06-08

I won a Polaroid PDC 640 Creative Kit in a contest. Given its current MSRP, I would not have purchased it due to the limited resolution (640 x 480 pixels). The market is full of digital cameras with better resolution (1-1.5 megapixels) for about the same price.

As ease of use goes, it doesn't get much better than this. You simply put in the batteries, install the SmartMedia card, turn it on, and start clicking away. In order to download the pictures you've taken the software must be installed to your computer. In response to the one reviewer who complained about the software not being compatible with certain editions of Windows, you need merely to go to Polaroids's website and download the patch for Windows 2000 or in my case, Windows XP. It took only a few minutes to download and I was soon up and running.

This camera is fairly intuitive if you have at least a working knowledge of digital cameras. I found myself only having to review the user's manual once, and it is fairly straightforward. The green flash indicator in the viewfinder makes it difficult to frame your shot as one previous reviewer noted, and aside from the limited resolution this is about the only other negative thing I can say about the camera. Although it interfaces with the computer via serial cable as opposed to the much faster USB, I haven't found this to be a major problem. I downloaded 14 pictures to my PC in only about 2-3 minutes just the night before writing this review. Picture quality is fair in the high resolution mode, good in super high resolution mode. I don't recommend using either the medium or low resolution settings.

Lastly, regarding battery life complaints I haven't found the PDC 640 to be any worse than any other digital camera. The kit includes an AC adapter which I highly recommend be used for downloads, which accounts for considerably more battery drain than actual picture taking. The resolution mode you use will also make a difference (higher resolution = more battery use).

If you're looking for an easy to use digital camera the PDC 640 is a very good choice. If you want the highest quality that digital photography has to offer, look elsewhere...but you'll have a slightly more complicated camera.

Bad battery life, poor driver support, serial only..........2002-01-20

I got this for Christmas a couple years ago. The first thing I disliked was the battery life -- I'd run out by the New Year. Plus, Polaroid didn't keep up on writing drivers when Windows 2000 came out (though there is Linux/FreeBSD support via gPhoto), and the green view-finder light is annoying. Now I have a white iBook and there's basically no hope for compatibility, as my camera only came with a serial cable (not a USB cable). Polaroid's recent Chapter 11 filing probably means I won't get Mac OS X drivers any time soon (though Apple may come through in the next versions of iPhoto). If you work only work on a supported platform and like giving Energizer money, this still isn't the camera for you!

D-Link is a well-respected name in networking hardware. Their hubs and switches have been around and hold up well.
This network-in-a-box is a great way to get started. The four-port hub allows that many computers to "talk" with each other and share data and resources. You also get two network interface cards (NICs) and two cables. Plug them in and install peer-to-peer networking on your Windoz machines and you're in business.

PRETTY GOOD LOW-TECH CD PLAYER.......2001-11-26

My mom got me this CD player a couple years ago for Christmas and I have used it ever since. It doesn't really have the features of the more expensive stereo systems such as bass boost, surround sound, etc... but the sound quality is a lot better than these other reviewers are making it out to be(it seems like the only people who ever review electronics are people who got ones that don't work). It actually plays some of my CD's that are too scratched up for my expensive 45-second ESP portable CD player which is great because otherwise I would have ended up buying a whole bunch of newer CDs. I have noticed also that if it doesn't play a scratched CD the first time, it gets better with each time you play it. God knows why that is, but I'm not complaining. Anyway, this CD player has pretty good sound (the part in Led Zeppelin's What is and What Shall Never Be where the guitar goes back and forth between the left and right channels comes across great), it plays scratched CD's, and you should buy it.

Don't expect to use this as a soundsystem for a party. The sound is lousy at higher volumes.

Overall quality is good. The CD player works very well and the tape player is fine too. Radio reception is very good. I can pick up some distant stations. The antennae isn't the greatest. The handle gets in the way of the antennae. We haven't had a single problem with it and we've used it daily for almost a year.

But it is a good deal for the money. I would buy one again.

We use is mostly in our 3 year old son's room to play some quiet bedtime music.

As an entry level box, it is not bad for a child to get started with electronics. The compactability of the unit is terrific for small hands and the price is outstanding. A good value!

This is by no means a high quality stereo. For alow volume, background music type situation it's great. I use it in the OR where it does a great job. Also it's very small an light which is another good feature. One major problem is that it doesn't have a track counter...but for this price, who cares?

Solid performer.......2007-01-21

Have owned this one for 2 years now. It is my main computer.

Pros:
-Great display, But (see Cons)
-Very Good Wireless Antenna Reception
-Reliable

Cons:
-Graphics not as strong as I had hoped. I tried playing "Republic Commandos" and "Call of Duty 2". Both were very choppy and slow on this laptop, even with everything shut down. I wasn't expecting it to be a "killer" gaming rig, but I thought with a P4 HT, Radeon 9000, and 1+GHz Ram - it would do a better job.
-Poor Battery life, well under 2 hours. Haven't watched a movie totally on battery power yet, but will need an extra battery.
-No Bluetooth. I would rather have it built-in than occupy the ONE PCMCIA slot all the time. I have a Palm T/X and that's how I sync.
-Only one PCMCIA slot.
-Only allows 1 Gig of Ram.

Overall, I am happy with it. But next laptop, I'll look at the graphics a little harder (I didn't have a lot of time to research before buying this one).

awesome laptop.......2006-12-05

I am using it for the past two years. it's working great. Most of friends who sees that ask's me is it a new one thats why i maintained it still i use it daily and i switch it off for every 4 days. it runs non stop.As usual the battery problem and looks like most of the Hp laptop's have power jack problem other than that, i never had any problem i am still using the os that came with the laptop. Hp did allow me to purchase the warranty service ever after 1 year of expiration. great service. IT's Bright screen and wide screen make's me watch movies more on my laptop than on my TV.:) it's worth.

Top performing laptop.......2006-11-07

We purchased quite a few of these units for use in the energy sector. They performed wonderfully; Even on offshore oil platforms in hostile environments.

This model is often used for gaming because of its fast processing speed. We use them for heavy duty seismic and geology software applications that use more resources than any game. We even load them down with MSDE's and SQL servers right on the laptop. Performance is still tops even loaded to the gills with applications; in addition, we run multi-taking programs each and everyday with these units. No problems and excellent support from HP. Hewlett-Packard even let us purchase extra warranty coverage after the factory warranties expired.

We only had trouble with one out of 13 units and the engineer that was assigned that unit is fairly rough on PC's to begin with, so we weren't surprised when he complained about problems. HP picked it up at our office and returned the unit good as new within 3 days. We had anticipated a week but HP is really good with service now. No complaints from any of our IT geeks or personnel, excluding the one engineer who in the last 4 months has also toasted two cell phones and a desktop. Everyone else is most happy with their units.

Unreliable laptop and the WORST technical service and guarantee.......2006-01-11

I bought this laptop a year ago from Circuit City as a present for my husband.
In less than a year it had a hard drive and a cd/dvd drive replaced, and the batttery pack, ram, and the OS and programs, removed, and installed over and over again.
New year's eve was spent talking to technical service people from India, and Seattle, on the first day of the new year more of the same with India and finally with some Spanish speaking people.
Last time I heard from a supervisor of the supervisor that I needed to fax the receipt for the purchase of the laptop in order to bring it to another supervisor to determine what to do. I still have not heard from them.
The laptop is an useless paperweight, sad reminder of money, time, and confidence in HP lost.
Bottom line, buy MAC.
