Great phone at a great price.......2007-09-01
I LOVE that there are two phones and they both don't need a telephone line. I've wanted a phone in my bedroom for years - now I have one. The one thing that I would be sure to mention to anyone looking at this product is that the keypad on the phones is pretty small in nature - so if what you want is a larger keypad, this isn't the phone for you. Other than that... it's GREAT!
Battery Died Even On Charger.......2007-08-29
After 2 years, the battery would randomly die even though it's sitting on the charger. You have to take it out and place it back in to charge it. It's frustrating to have the phone not working when you needed it especially since it's been sitting on the charger for days
Lasted two years and then batteries died and replacement batteries died after another two months.......2007-08-22
I had no problem with this phone for the first year and a half. It was clear and the range was good. Then the batteries died. We ordered new batteries and a few months later they died as well. Don't bother buying new batteries.
We were also annoyed by the caller id. If you need to dial a 1 from your phone before making long distance calls, you will not be able to return calls from caller id. If you just missed a call from Grandma and her number shows up on the caller id as 555.555.5555 and you click "On" to return her call, it will dial these exact digits (without the 1). But this of course doesn't work for most of us because you need to dial a 1 before making a call out of your area code.
There are some places (like Vancouver, BC) where you need to dial the entire 10 digit number without the 1 for local calls. In that case, the phone would work well ok. But we find ourselves often writing down the number from caller id and then dialing it by hand. Similarly, you cannot easily add a person to your "Phonebook" because the number will be entered without the 1. You will have to erase the entire number, add 1 and then type the whole number into the phone book.
It also has a maximum number of numbers you can put into the phonebook memory. I think it is about 30-40. Don't worry, the batteries will die before you make that many friends.
great product and service.......2007-08-14
phone came in original box and received at my home in a few days as promised
Worth every penny-Can you hear me now??.......2007-07-31
Excellent product, I would purchase as gift. Can you hear me now- Yes, I can.
crystal clear channels, there is no else on your line and you don't hear anybody elses conversation. It has speakerphone, ringtone feature if you want to page the other person on the 2nd phone that is provided with this set as well as a answering machine. There is as well as three voice mailboxes and you can plug the 2nd headset any where in the aprtment without having any static....I love it !!!!Worth every penny for this price, what a bargain..

Customer Reviews:
Avoid this phone!.......2007-09-21
We purchased this phone a few months ago, and it has been nothing but trouble. It is made of cheap plastic, the reception is terrible, and the functionality is extremely limited. Some features make no sense, like the fact that the message voice will tell you the time of day and the year (!) someone called, but not the date of the call. Real junk, you can get better phones for less money--avoid this!
Clear reception, works well.......2007-05-20
I have the 4-phone version of this (E5947B), purchased on sale at Best Buy for about 50% more than Amazon's 2-phone offering.
I've had it for 6 months. Everyone is happy with it. The voice quality is very good, and no reception problems in our wireless LAN equipped home.
The intercom feature is quite useful if you have 4 people in a large home. It's easy to transfer or forward calls to another extension.
Minor drawbacks are as follows:
1. The wall-plug transformers run a little hot, even if the phone is charged and even if the phone is out of the cradle. 4 of these running 365x24 will add to your electric bill. Sad that AT&T does not bother with energy-smart charging.
2. If your hands are full, you can't wedge the phone between your chin and neck. You'll probably pinch the "Off" button and disconnect.
3. The quality of the recorded messages is fairly bad. No excuse for this.
4. Phone supports caller ID. If you don't have caller ID, you will find 2 minor annoyances: The phone does not auto-answer when it's ringing and you take it off the cradle. Also, if the main base unit loses power, it loses track of time. You have to reset the clock. Very feeble. If you use caller ID it automatically sets (or resets) the time.
Overall, we are happy with it. Don't know if there is 5-star product out there.
Problem prone unit.......2007-01-04
Am pleased with unit in most respects except erratic performance. Features are good, but dialing using the stored numbers bring this unit to the edge of unacceptability. It often requires 2 or more dialing attempts and sometimes connects with no audio reception---while the person called can hear everything including a few unsavory comments concerning the unit. The troubleshooting portion of the manual is an insight to the inherent problems and making it clear that returning it for repair would be useless. Following troubleshooting instructions provided no relief. I would return this unit for a refund if possible though. I fully expect to have to replace this unit in the near future.
Disappointing quality.......2006-08-21
I bought this last week and will be returning it today. While I can usually hear phone conversations OK, the quality of the voice is not very good - usually has some static. The user manual is incomplete and confusing (for example, blinking codes on base display are not explained; words printed on the phone parts are not in the index - the user manual uses different words for the same parts!), editing caller id info in the user directory does not update the corresponding info in the caller id list (phones from Panasonic and Sony do this correctly - AT&T does not). If you want to buy a quality 5.8 GHz phone, try any other brand. AT&T goofed on the quality and design of this one!

Using additional handsets, up to 2 people can be conferenced on a call (2 handsets), or two extensions can be conferenced on a call, while two other extensions can be talking internally, using the Intercom feature.
Amazon.com Product Description
The i5866 from VTech is a 5.8 GHz cordless phone system with a number of handy extras, including an all-digital answering system, and multi-user expandability to eight handsets (one color-model included). The i5866 utilizes the 5.8 GHz frequency and digital spread spectrum technology to provide clear, accurate reception with less interference than traditional 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz phones. The answering machine stores up to 15 minutes of messages split among three mailboxes, while full remote operation allows you to check messages even while you are away from home.
Caller ID/call waiting compatible, the i5866 has a 50-number caller ID memory as well as a separate 50-name-and-number phone directory to help you keep track of important contacts. You can select among eight ring tones and 12 musical ringers, while the supplied audio patch cord allows you to record custom ring tones.
The full-color handset LCD comes with six preset images that you can assign to phone directory entries or set as background wall-paper, while the included USB cable and image editor software allow you to download custom images. Handset-to-handset call transfer allows you to route incoming calls to any handset registered to the system, and three-way conferencing lets you communicate with multiple parties at once. An intercom feature provides a way to communicate between handset locations, and a global page/handset function lets you speak with all handsets at once.
Additional features include flash, redial (last 10 numbers), and hold. A speakerphone on the handset combines with headset compatibility to provide hands-free communication options. The NiMH battery provides up to eight hours of talk time or up to five days on standby, while a low-battery indicator lets you know when to return a handset to its charging cradle. A handset control allows you to adjust volume levels. The i5866 also comes backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Customer Reviews:
When it works it's great...........2007-09-16
I've had this phone for a little over a year. I'll be continuing my quest for a good cordless phone soon. Right off the bat the phone's battery life was significantly shorter than others I've owned(Panasonic, Uniden, AT&T) as (I believe) the color LCD eats up plenty o' battery life. Also, it frequently drops calls. We'll be talking and the phone drops the call and displays "searching for base." If finds the base after a few seconds but the call is lost. This has nothing to do with a low battery as it occurs when there's a full charge and nothing to do with distance as we're never more than 5'-30' from the base.
Minor annoyances...
- Our #5 and #9 keys have been sticking lately and either double dialing the digit or not at all. This now requires a very slow and solid push to each button when dialing.
- When you answer the phone there is a one second delay until the call actually picks up so if you say 'hello' right away as one would normally do the caller on the other end either hears nothing or "...o" necessitating a second 'hello.'
On the plus side the range is great. I've wandered >200' from the base and still carried on a conversation. The short battery life and other failings have doomed this phone to a box in basement as a backup in the very near future.
These systems are touch and go at best. Be Warned........2007-04-10
These phone systems are touch and go. The first time I got it, my system lasted about a year. I got it brand new and just released fresh from Vtech. After a year the phone started messing up, people weren't able to hear me speak but I could hear them fine for no good reason. If I remember correctly, I got the unit the first time in either late 03 or very early 04 and had to return it in late 04. Then I struck gold on the second system which again was brand new and has lasted me until about a day ago (April 07) when now the charging mechanism and base unit have gone nuts suddenly. I'm trying a hard reset to see if it works or not. But my point is that this is a really good system for people who want to invest in them, as long as you get one that actually works. The features are super easy to use, the phone is crystal clear and unlike some cordless phones can be used easily with VoIP services. Using regular rechargeable AA batteries are superb in my book as well...no more hunting for proprietary brand batteries that are basically 2 or 3 AA batteries @ $18-$22. If my system is truly broken and I can't buy a brand new replacement, I'll probably get the ones Vtech now offers.
This phone is horrible!.......2007-04-08
The first several months with this phone was okay, and I liked that you could buy additional handsets. But after a few months, things went downhill. There would be random times when the caller would be unable to hear me, even though I could hear them just fine. I had my phone line checked, and it was fine. Then we even switched to a cable phone line, and it still happens, so I know it's the phone itself and not the service provider. Now I have buttons that aren't working. So between the non-functioning buttons and calls that blank-out, I think it's very much time to start phone shopping. I'm steering clear of Vtech!!
Great set of phones.......2006-12-26
I was so tired of finding all the phones in my teenagers room. So I bought this phone, and 4 handsets. I gave my daughter the cool color phone, the rest I told her were not allowed in her room.
It worked like a charm. The base unit has a place for extra batteries to charge, so she never runs out of juice (you have to buy the batteries to go in there). It is easily to find lost units by paging them by number. It was super easy to setup. My daughter has programmed her handset to announce, in her voice, every one of her friends that calls her (some more enthusiastically than others).
I have no problem with the sound quality, it sounds just a good as any phone I have had. It does not seem to interfere with my wireless lan. The battery life has never been an issue for anyone but the teenager (I think she forgets to put her phone on the charger), but that is mitigated by the extra batteries in the base unit. The three mail boxes provide the kids their own message center.
I would buy it again. Love it.
Excellent value.......2006-12-25
I have used this set, with 2 extra handsets, for well over a year. I work from home and the hands free operation using either the base station or a handset is ideal. I also use a Panasonic KX-TCA92 headset with the handset and get excellent reception and clarity both is what I say and what I hear. My house is 3 stories and the base station is in a loft bedroom. The handset works in the lowest room OK
Very good phone at a good price. My only advice is when the time comes for new rechargeable batteries only buy good quality name brands.

Customer Reviews:
Poor Quality, Poor Performance.......2007-06-12
I purchased this phone at Sam's Club about 1 year ago for full retail price at the time. I hate it. The sound quality is really poor. It constantly tells me that I am using the wrong batteries even though they are the factory batteries that came with the unit. There is no option to turn the ringer off on the base - so if you select a personalized ring tone you hear the ring tone AND the base ringtone(which cannot be changed or turned off). The outgoing message for the answering machine cannot be turned off or muted either, so everytime we receive a call we all have to listen to my outgoing message, and it will slowly drive you nuts. The buttons are awkward and pretty cheap and cheesy. I'm going back to a motorola as soon as I can justify spending another $100+ bucks on a phone. Another downer, we've tried carrying the phone across the street when we are visiting our neighbors outside (maybe 40ft away) and there is no reception, 5.8GHzs my @%%. It's a piece...
Good phones but poor quality.......2006-03-29
I recently bought the i5866 DSS Expandable Cordless Phone with Digital Answering System and six handsets. I have a 5 level split level home with only one servicable phone jack. I also run a standard G Wireless Lan in the home. The router for the lan is in the basement and the phone is situated on the next floor up.
I don't really know if the router was the cause of the problem but all but one of the phones (located on every level of the house) transmitted garbled speech. The sound coming in to the phones was fine, but no-one could understand what we were saying back. Also one of the phones would not recharge it's batteries. I returned the lot.
Excellent Sound, Good Overall Phone for the Price........2006-01-07
I am no expert on cordless phones, but I have owned my share of different brands over a 15 year period of time. I owned a vtech long ago and did not like the sound quality back then. This new phone sounds great and has a few cool features you should keep in mind: First, you can record your own ringtone from any sound source(my kids love that), but the playback ring is not as loud as I would want it. Second, you can communicate between handsets(I like that), and lastly, you can transfer calls from one handset to the other. All the other features are cosmetic and minor, but cool if you are into those things. I honestly don't know what people expect from a phone of this price, sure the Panasonic phones are probably better for range, but I think most people don't go too far from home with a cordless home phone. I'd say the best thing about the phone are the type of batteries it takes. I can't see buying a cordless phone battery for $2o and having the thing not hold a charge because someone but it back on the base before its time. NiCad batteries are a thing of the past and this baby comes with AA Nickel Metal Hydride rechargeables that can be purchased anywhere and recharged many times and replaced with this most common format in batteries. Even the base has a recharger for spare batteries. Good Phone for a good price!
operates at both 2.4GHz and 5.8 Ghz.......2005-12-13
I don't want to start a big argument here, but despite what Mr Rusty H. Hodge said previously, the VTech i5866 phone does apparently operate at both 2.4GHz and 5.8 Ghz, AT THE SAME TIME. The handset transmits on 2.4 GHz and receives on 5.8 GHz. The base unit is just the opposite. You'll find this info on page 44 of the owner's manual, which you can download from Amazon or VTech.
Over a year - no complaints.......2005-11-23
We're a six person household so the phones get a workout. We've been through several phone systems and like this one best. Its been a joy for the past year with narry a glitch.
Base station is fairly compact and handsome but notably easy to use. The 5.8 spectrum does not interfere with cell phones, or my Linksys Wireless G network. Its always clear as a bell. Best answering machine I have ever had. Records and playsback perfecty.
The handsets are great, easy to use, easy to navigate. Would be a neat trick if the memory synchronized between the handsets so you didn't need to enter phone books more than once. Also would be neat if handset could access the answering machine which is controlled directly from the base system.
Reason I am writing this review is because I came back to order another handset. All in all this is the finest home system I have had. (I did a review on the ATT 954, a thumbs down. But I have busted or dusted my share of Panasonic, Radio Shack, and Uniden over the years.)

Broke in two weeks..........2007-06-20
I work form home and loved the idea of owning this phone. It had all the features I wanted. Two weeks after owning it, the handset failed. While using any of the two lines, if another call came in on either line there would be enough static to disturb my conversation. I called AT&T customer service and they suggested that I return the equipment.
Great phone.......2007-05-21
I got the phone and a wireless expansion phone (a wireless expansion phone comes with the corded unit, so I have 2 wireless phones)about a month ago. I really enjoy it because all the phones have speakerphone capability. The headset & mike I use doesn't make my voice sound muffled like some other phones I've had. It is a 2 line unit and both lines work great. Some of the functions like redial and to delete CID numbers take several keystrokes to accomplish which is somewhat annoying. The wireless expansion phones are very clear and have no static. I have voice mail from my phone carrier so I don't use the answering machine. All in all, I feel I got a great phone and a great price.

Customer Reviews:
Terrible Phone ... DONT BUY IT !! \(>o
<)/.......2007-09-14
This phone is terrible !! I purchased this phone outta convenience thinking I would no longer have to run to get my phone when someone called. I'd be able to have one in my Bedroom, My Son's Bedroom, LivingRoom, and Office. But Two(2) of my handsets don't work. It says Out of Range or there's another phone in use when there isn't. I talked to the VTech customer support and they told me if I have any computers or radios in the area where the phone is placed it's most likely you'll get interference and need to remove those items or move the phone away from those items.

QUOTE From VTech : Other electronic products (i.e., 802.11 wireless networking products, radios, radio towers, pager towers, cell phones, intercoms, room monitors, televisions, personal computers, kitchen appliances and other cordless phones) can cause interference with your cordless phone. Try installing your phone as far away as possible from these types of electronic devices.

How lame is that ? I purchased the phone so I can have a handset in close reach and VTech tells me I have to place my phone Far Away from my reach and away from TV, Radio, Computer, or Kitchen appliances. Wherever I place my phone it's gonna be in the vicinity of those type of Appliances. I do not live in a huge Mansion and it sucks that only Two(2) of Four(4) Phones work. In my opinion if I knew I was gonna have this kind of problem ahead of time before purchase ... I definitely wouldn't have purchased it. I would of gone with a different brand like Panasonic or something better. Save your bucks and buy a different model or phone different from this. Unless you like paying for Four(4) phones but actually paying for only Two(2). Not worth the price and headaches ! XD
