Epson RX 580.......2007-09-07

My older Epson C80 died and I needed a reasonably priced replacement which provided quality photo printing, as well as clear, crisp text in printing documents. I got it with the Epson 580! The scanner and copy abilities are an added bonus. (I would give this printer 5 stars, but copy quality is a bit fuzzy.) However, my photos are fabulous! No lines, sharp and clear. Also, it was up and running within 15 minutes of being out of the box. (I am a computer illiterate, hence my love of Mac.) I am a little worried about replacing ink cartridges, as I've heard they don't last long, but all in all I highly recommend this printer.

THE PRINTER ARRIVE DOA.
ON THE SUPPORT, NO ONE ANSWER'S EMAILS, ONLY AUTOMATED EMAILS. OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
I TOOK THE PRINTER EVEN BEFORE OPENING IT, TO AN OTHER COUNTRY TO DO MY JOB, BUT NO ONE IS GIVING ME ANY RESPONSE, I TOOK THE PRINTER TO EPSON SERVICES TO USE THE WARRANTY IN THIS COUNTRY (VENEZUELA) AND HERE IN EPSON SERVICES THEY JUST WASHED THEIR HANDS, BECAUSE IT IS AN IMPORTED ITEM.
EPSON IS ZERO RESPONSABILITY.

This is a great printer..but ..........2007-08-12

when it first initializes to grab that first sheet of paper, the sound can startle the unexpecting person. Otherwise, it is a great printer. Printing to disc is a snap, but I don't like having to keep track of the disc tray adapter.

Ink & Printer.......2007-08-07

I think today printing is not about Printers, it's about Ink. This Epson Printer is very good, the Epson Ink has excellent quality for home printing. I just subtract a star due to the high ink consumption and its associated costs.

I'd suggest that the printer maker could sell the ink supply and give the printer for free. And, for the review magazines, besides to show the printers velocity, quality and so ever, they could show the ink average consumption and related costs, because what really matters, is the (total) price / performance, isn't?

Returned to store same day.......2007-07-28

Ran into an Epson rep at Bestbuy and he recommended this printer. Looked really nice, but could never load the ink. Spent well over an hour trying to do what should have taken 1 minute. Spent 20 minutes on the phone with Epson tech support. She basically read the manual to me, then told me to take it back. Hats off to Bestbuy who took it back no questions asked.Oh well the search continues for a printer. Looks like a Canon or HP.
Update: Picked up the HP D7360 today on sale.Ink cartridges loaded on the first try.Was up and running in just a few minutes.Select photo quality print in set up and use HP Advanced Photo Paper for excellent results. Very pleased with this printer so far.HP Photosmart D7360 Printer

Wish it was more Mac friendly.......2007-05-30

It's probably a little after the fact writing this review, but they are still available both new and used. The reason I selected this printer was for the variety of features. I was a little disappointed to find out that some are not Mac compatible. This information was not available before the printer was purchased and used. I have owned three inkjet printers. Unfortunately, my old Canon was not a photo printer but it was really a workhorse. My HP's broke after a year and a half of use with similar problems.

I used most of the features of this printer and they all worked fine. I was a little unhappy of the scan and print feature so I scan into Photoshop, adjust and print from there. The color correction is dynamite. I printed a picture of two people wearing navy suits and they looked Navy. All the other processing made them black enen the so called professional ones.

Today I went out and bought a RX580 because the RX700 ink is not waterproof. I printed an envelope that was returned because it got wet and smeared. Besides I have to go back in and hand edit some of my graphic work but the ink smears.

Yes the ink is expensive but I knew that before I bought it. However, it didn't seem to use an inordinate amount of ink. I order ink from Epson and it's usually here in 2 or 3 days and I alway have extra on hand. When the printer tells me that I need more ink I always get a lot more out of it.

I hope I'm just as lucky with my 580.

Mac users - buy, but with this caution..........2006-10-25

The RX700 is a terrific printer in so many ways, and I can see why there are so many good reviews about it. It could have been a five star review, but I had to ding it due to the driver. More on that later. This RX700 is a replacement for a two-year old RX600 which needed a new LCD screen and would have cost more to repair than to buy the new printer. Pros: fast, easy, great print quality, CD/DVD printer. Cons: a bit noisier than the RX600, and somewhat confusing to install the software. But even more of a problem is that the driver software will not save any customizations that involve your print path settings. So where you will see in the print window a drop down for "presets," you won't find that its parameters have actually been stored. For instance, I created a preset for DVD printing that instructs the printer to use the CD/DVD tray and CD/DVD media print quality settings. Even though I select that preset, all I actually get are the standard settings. Same goes for another preset that calls for the back tray. I have high quality photo paper in that tray, leaving the bottom tray for plain bond. And I've saved a preset that calls for high quality printing on glossy photo paper. But instead, the print driver uses the bottom tray with the standard bond. I spent many hours uninstalling and reinstalling and resetting my print settings and even more time on the phone with Epson tech support - levels one and two. Epson finally confirmed that there is a problem, although the tech rep I spoke with strongly indicated that the problem has more to do with the way Apple wrote the latest OS X. Let me be very clear - you CAN make terrific looking prints on CDs and photo paper, etc. You just need to remember to always choose the paper path and quality settings every time you print or change from one media to another. This is an unfortunate fault and I wanted to bring it to everyone's attention. I should also point out that I'm using a power-PC based G5 and I don't know what if any difference there would be on an intel-based G5, which has a more recent driver posted on the Epson site.

My RX700 review.......2006-08-27

I've had this printer since xmas 2005. all that time I've had no problems what so ever and really have enjoyed owning it. I would call my self a power user as I do everything with this printer, not just photos. It's the first all in one printer on the market to print cd's. it says it does double sided printing but thats a big joke. If you click that button to print on both sides, it just prints it on one side and tells you to reload the paper so it can print on the other side. Ya right, thats double sided printing.. Like you can't do that with any other printer... what ever.

I like the scanning on this printer, it seems to be the best quality scanning I've seen. mind you all epson scanners are known to be great.

I love to copy and print button just with the printer alone, works great for those quick just need a copy days.

All in all it works really well, but

Now for the bad news, as many reviews have pointed out the only down side to this printer is the cost of ink is crazy. Here in canada there is only one chain of stores that carry the ink. that big Drug Store chain that has a small computer department in it and guess what they want more money for the ink too then everyone else does.

The best place to buy the ink from is directly from Epson canada, I'd order from amazon but they don't ship it here. plus that dollar thing i'd have to deal with. Plus they have free shipping.

one other down side to this printer is it will not print just black and white. true black and white. I mean, even if you click that grayscale button, it still uses color ink, like it or not. I notice this because I ordered two black ink cardridges as I do a lot of black and white printing and the other color inks started going down as I printed the black colors. also if the ink heads are not clean, you can see some color in your black and white prints. so your using Color ink like it or not.

Plus if you run out of ink when your printing and just want to print black and white tell you get more color ink cartridges. your out of luck. because you can't print on Empty cartridges need them or not.

Dont Pay Attention to Flor Emert Reviews.......2006-07-16

I have not yet purchased an Epson Printer. But I noticed while shopping for one, this person ("A message from the future") is just disgruntled. He (or she) has written an identical review for several Epson models--you can see them readily. Pay no attention to this annoying person's unhelpful comments!!

the first epson I ever had that was a major problem.......2006-06-22

Had it for less than 2 weeks[actually had a second replacement from epson in that time too] and it just would not print photos correctly. The color was off. Finally after 3 phone calls, all lasting over an hour each, 3 e mails, epson decided that even though the photos were printing fine on the epson 960 model, the RX700 was so sophisticated that it was putting all the undetected color into the photos and saturating them with red.

In addition, the controls are far from intuitive, and even the techs on line [2 of 3] were having trouble finding things as they read from the manuals. What a shame because the all in one should be great.

With the idea that I would have to custom correct each and every photo [that's what photoshop is for] i returned it.

I guess I am just not sophisticated enough for the product.
