SmartTrax technology lets you sort by song title, artist, album, genre, or year. Very disappointed.......2005-04-04

Similar to the problems others have had, we've had not one but two RCD148s fail on us. The first one stopped playing CDs within a month or so, and we were able to exchange it for a new one. The second one lasted not quite a year before having the same problem. Even when they did work, MP3 playback was slow and unreliable.

Given all of the problems, I'd highly recommend staying well away from this product. As for us, we won't be purchasing any more RCA products anymore.

Unreliable.......2005-02-24

I've had my RCD148 for 14 months. It just stopped being able to play CD's of any kind. The motor refuses to run which may be a defective motor or the drive circuits are failing.

I liked the great capabilities of this machine, but the reliability is poor. It certainly was not abused, either. No temperature extreems, nor rough handling.

I'm not sure what to buy next.

Reliable playback of Old Time Radio MP3 files from the Net!.......2004-09-23

I collect old time radio MP3's, available free from many hobbyists'
websites, and in the public domain since either they weren't originally protected by copyright, or are very old (1930s/early forties.) Most of them are from limited-quality AM broadcasts and are encoded as "low" as 16 kbs. This RCA boombox WILL play them, though the manual states that the MP3 files must be encoded at 32 kbs or higher. The WMA files, though, must be -- as indicated in the manual -- at least 64 kbs.

I have NOT -- repeat, NOT! -- had the problems of some other amateur reviewers. As in the case of my review for the portable RCA 2478 CD/MP3/WMA player, I have had very reliable decoding and playback of MP3's. *Why* some people here say that NONE will play simply mystifies me.

I have owned my unit for the better part of a year and have had consistently good results. Most of the time I use it from AC, but I have also played it from batteries and found the life of the D cells to be close to the claims in the manual. In fact, I haven't changed the batteries more than once in the time I've owned it.

Out of the box I had one small problem: the AM reception was erratic. I tapped on the box and found that the reception would suddenly "snap" in to clarity; but after a while it would fade a bit. I rarely use AM but after a few months it bothered me enough to motivate me to open the cabinet and poke around a bit. A circuit board wire connector must have been *slightly* loose, for in a moment or two I found that I had fixed it permanently, and now the AM reception is fine.

Sensitivity is poorer than the best stand-alone non-CD sets. Do not expect reliable "DX" (distance) reception of low powered AM signals. FM is reasonably good but I usually use the player for CDs and CDRs and rarely for radio, due to the stations in my local area. If I want *radio* I use a really sensitive set, such as one of my Grundigs or Sonys.

I do NOT have any trouble with these alleged problems reported by other reviewers: (a) skipping; (b) truncated or shut-off music tracks; (c) bad sound; (d) "useless" remote control insensitivity; (e) overheating; (f) drifty FM; (g) premature product death; (h) static sensitivity and lost settings.

With respect to the last item: I set it up about 9 or 10 months ago, and never lost any of the settings, which are still in memory. If my recollection is correct, I believe that my equalizer presets were retained even when I changed the batteries: generally well-designed digital equipment uses a capacitor to store a voltage for at least a few minutes, allowing this.

What could be the reason that other people have had so much alleged trouble with the player?

Could it possibly be that THEY ARE PRINTING DISINFORMATION because of some motivation to cause the reader to dismiss all thought of considering the product? I can understand problems with -- say -- a few units along the way; but such consistent bad-mouthing, so categorically and stridently, seems unconvincing. My own background has been in audio engineering (I've designed commercial equipment) so I have some practical experience here. This present RCA product is satisfactory to me, with the exception of the relatively insensitive AM tuner section and its intermittent connection that required fixing, which caused me to downgrade it from a potential "4" to a "3". My CDR disks are *correctly* produced and finalized; play just fine in this RCD148 boombox and in other MP3 players (and computers) that I use; my regular audio CDs play fine. The sound quality is adequate, if not exactly high-fidelity. What more does one expect from a product that cost about sixty dollars?

Complete garbage.......2004-09-17

Avoid this unit like the plague. I have followed the manufacturer's instructions to the letter and none of my MP3 CDs will work in this device - they just spin and spin.

The same CDs work in my Rio MP3 CD player, but not in this piece of trash.

The only good thing about this junk is it will easily fit in to the garbage can where it belongs.

I agree with most other reviewers. I bought this a while ago - but repeated frustrations with trying to play any kind of MP3 disc and FM led me to write this.
The only thing its good for is playing regular CD's. That too, it takes a long time to read a disc before it can play.

- MP3 Disks 'die' after a song or two. It either overheats or the memory runs out. Ive tried this at 128 kbps and lower recordings and none work.

- The FM tuner's volume fluctuates and it keeps losing the presets, even when connected.

- Remote is useless since you need to get real close to the machine to read the display.

The only use I got out of this: I bought this for our newborns nursery and discovered that the remote also worked for the crib mobile ( which came with a remote). In the end, a 70 buck crib mobile remote...

VERY BAD PRODUCT.- I have EN 985e 19" Flat Monitor
DIGUSTING MONITOR
GEOMETRY IS ALL MESSED UP. I WORK ON 1280 BY 1024 AND MY VERTICAL DISTANCE IS MAXED OUT WITH ATLEAST HALF AN INCH BEFORE THE BORDERS.
It always messes up the geometry whenever I restart my computer. I work on GeForce FX 5200 (256 MB AGP) and still this monitor is the most useless product sold in the American markets.

I strongly suggest NO ENVISION Monitors.

I've bought and re-sold 6 of these monitors over the last year and kept one for myself. Not one complaint from anyone who I sold them to. I'm very happy with the one I use, it is bright, clear and always been like the day I brought it home from the store. I've had it about a year now. Hard to beat for the price.

This is a good everyday 17" monitor. Plug & Play, .27 mm dot pitch, 16" diagonal viewable image, digital controls, 1280 x 1024 max resolution, 3 year parts & labor warranty. You can register the product on line as well as download any needed drivers for your operating system from Envision's website. Comes with tilt & swivel base that you need to snap on and required cables. I'm running the monitor in 1024x768 mode on a Win 95 system and I'm impressed by it. The colors are very vivid and bright. Sitting next to my Compaq FS-740 monitor it looks no different except that it's not a flat screen. Monitor is 16" high x 16" deep x 16 wide. A very tidy foot print indeed. I purchased mine with a hefty rebate while it was on sale at a local office supply store and got it for less than half of retail. I'm very pleased with it.

Good sound, but outdated drivers= problems with DirectX 8.......2002-08-27

I've had this card for a while, and the sound used to be great, but Aureal being out of business meant no further support for drivers (and Diamond's drivers are based on the manufacturer's), and each time I install DirectX 8, the 3D games start crashing after a few minutes of gameplay. The card is very stable in windows 98 and easy to install. I know it is not the video card, I've replaced it a few times.

A3D technology is great, I just regret not having the opportunity to keep this card working to its full potential. Even though the last drivers support EAX 2.0, when it is enabled the games crash even faster.

When I ordered my computer from the HP website in February 2000, they installed the Monstersound MX300 sound card. Well, I thought what's the big deal. All sound cards were alike, right? Wrong, Man I was blown away while playing my favorte video games. The sound came at me from all directions. Not just left or right but, front, back, up, down and around. And with just two speakers too. Man this card will have you looking behind you to see who's coming. It's hard to discribe it. All I can say is if you can find one, even used GET IT. The conpany Aureal semiconductor,who invented the technology for NASA has been bought by Creative Labs. And their new stuff does't even comes close to this card. Hey Creative Labs want some advise, put the Aureal Technology on your cards and stop drowning them in reverb. Gamers will love you for it. I purchased this card as a spare just in case. I'd hate to have to go back to using sound basters again. Man that would be torture.

Excellent sound card for games and music.......2000-06-30

I did not think a 3D sound card could make such a difference when playing games. Unreal tournament and Quake 3 has never felt so intense. This card gives depth to the sounds. You can "feel" how far away the sound is. Buy this card. Easy installation. Make sure you have the latest drivers.

An excellent soundcard for a reasonable price........2000-03-03

Up til' now I've bought Creative Labs Soundblaster cards, which I've always found to be reliable high-quality hardware. But I'd heard glowing reviews about the MX300, and the Sound Blaster Live! was far too expensive for me at the time.

The biggest problem with the MX300 is not the sound quality but false expectations. The surround sound effects can only be enabled if a game you're playing has either Direct3D, EAX or Aureal 2.0 driver support.

Also, make sure you buy a good quality set of speakers or headphones. You'll never be able to appreciate the excellent sound quality unless you've got the right equipment to hear it with.

the Reason I bought this is because I was going cheap. When I first installed it, it totally blacked out my computer. I am a coputer tech. and I usually dont have these types of problems. Well my computer Died and when I looked around my Mother board I saw that it buned my Ram. Not woth the Money. Buy Sound Blaster Live for a guarantee product.

not for linux.......2004-09-09

If you want a raid5 card that works with linux I highly recommend going with a 3ware product instead. After two weeks of struggling with this piece of hardware I returned it and bought a escalade 7506LP instead -- it may be $100 more but worth every cent. Promise claims to have linux support but it is sadly out of date and tech support is none existent (they never responded to my email inquiries). I'm giving this product 3 stars because I'm giving them the benefit of doubt and assume that it works as advertised with windows systems. But all linux users, stay away!

For those of you who must absolutely save the $100, I highly recommend visiting the yahoo group sx4000linux to read about other user experiences and possible solutions to driver issues you will no doubt encounter. But good luck getting it to work with 2.6.x kernels....no open or closed source drivers.
