Amazon.com Product Description
Stay connected with your buddies while hiking on the trail, riding the ski lift, or exploring other locations within a 6-mile range with this pair of GMR635 two-way radios. Also ideal as a neighborhood watch tool and workplace aid, each radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS and 7 FRS) for communicating with friends or family. It's easy to browse for channels thanks to the channel scan feature, which looks for active signals while you view the display, and the monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given frequency. And talking on the radio couldn't be simpler--just hit the PTT button when you're ready to transmit. It's important to note that the transmission range will vary depending on the channel and the surrounding terrain.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display with a battery strength meter, a keypad lock that keeps you from accidentally pressing buttons at the wrong time (such as when a radio is in your pocket), a roger beep that indicates the end of a transmission, and your choice of five different call tones. The radios come with a single charging cradle that can accommodate both radios at once, two NiMH rechargeable battery packs, and two belt clips for efficient transport. The entire bundle is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

Great Deal~Very Good and Simple.......2005-03-20
I got these radios for about $40. there not bad. I havent been able to really try them. I think they could go sicks miles in an open space. They are very simple(but yet add some very cool features like call rings and scan) and provide some fun as well. For spring break im going to Florida so my family is going to take them there!
_________________________________________________________________
Pros:
Good Clear Voice
Easy to Use
Recharable
Simple
Cons:
Might lose your range after about 3 miles.(But what Wakie-Talkie lives up to its real range?)
Great for:
Bikes
All family occasions
Parks
Six Flags( those places)
Big Buildings
Trips
Car to Car talking.
Not good for:
Going to Safeway and asking your wife what she wants.
Getting directions from others(one house to a car)
Basically, long range stuff.
Field tested - Excellent!.......2005-02-17
In the past, I used another brand (begins with an M: T5420's) for skiing and fishing. While those models worked well, they only got about 8 hours on 3 AAA batteries (each unit). Over a weekend trip, this caused a problem.
The Unident's I now have are truly leaps ahead of other models I've used. The rechargeable battery option is perfect and I found the range to be more than adequate. (My family used 4 units over an entire ski resort and had no problems at all with reception: moutain terrain, etc and they worked great).
I highly recommend these units and can speak from experience from using other manufacturers models.
Hope this helped...
For my purposes, these are GREAT!.......2005-01-31
After extensive testing, the library where I work switched to these radios based on the price and features. We use about 20 of these to keep people in touch as they move all around a VERY large, two story building in a downtown urban environment. Because they are rechargable, we save a ton of money on batteries (our old radios went through a set every 2 weeks). As for clarity - we have a very strong signal no matter where we are in the library building or on the grounds (an entire city block). The concrete of the building doesn't even keep us from communicating via these radios.
Though I cannot comment on the claim that they will reach six miles (because we don't use them like that), I can say that we enjoy very clear voice conversations with no significant "interference" from outside radios. For our purposes these radios have been perfect!
Great Radio for the Price.......2005-01-25
People who talk about having only 1 mile of range on their talkie don't really understand the way Radio Waves work. All GMRS and FRS radios are on the 462mhz band, what that means to the avg user is that it's pretty much line of site. If you can see the person you will be able to talk to them. Now you will be able to have about a mile or so of trees things like that in between you and the other person. If you have hills and valleys between you and the person you are trying to talk too, you will have problems hearing them if the hill or mountain is between you and them. At this frequency radio waves don't bend much at all, that's why it's going to be line of sight. Power will help somewhat a 1watt talkie won't have the range that a 3watt one has, but it's not going to be very much in terms of distance.
People who say this talkie or that talkie works better just by range aren't explaining what their test conditions are, so you have no idea what is between them and the other person. If you wanted to compare radios like this....you have to have other radios in the test also, you can't tell anything from just one set / brand of radios in this kind of test.
Simple rule for gmrs/frs radios, if you can see the general area the other person is you should be able to talk to them. If one of you is elevated your range will increase dramatically. That's why they put tv/radio towers on hills and mountains. One mile is typical range for almost all gmrs radios that are transmitting 500mw to 1watt. This same one watt would be just as good if you were 10 miles apart and able to see the area where the other person is.
It's not the wattage that is important, for gmrs radios, it's the feature set on each radio that should be the main draw to a particular radio, not just someone saying I can talk only 1 mile with this radio. Want to learn about radio waves and radios, this site will keep you busy for eons. www.qrz.com

Stay connected with your buddies while on the trail, at the baseball game, or anywhere else within a 6-mile range with this pair of GMR638-2CK two-way radios. Also ideal as neighborhood watch tools and kid-sitting aids, each state-of-the-art radio features 22 channels (15 GMRS, 7 FRS) and 38 privacy codes, along with a voice-operated transmitter that enables hands-free communication when used with an optional HS 2467 headset and microphone. The large number of channels and privacy codes give users several communication options, ensuring that they can almost always talk with friends or family via an exclusive, uninterrupted signal. The channels are easy to find thanks to the channel scan feature, which browses for active channels while you watch, and the channel monitor function, which listens for weak signals on a given channel. To transmit on a GMRS or FRS channel, a user merely presses the PTT button while the scan is paused.
Additional features include a backlit LCD display, keypad lock, and a choice of five different call tones. The selectable tones are ideal for groups with several radios, as it lets users differentiate between calls. The radios also include a pair of belt clips for efficient transport, along with a charging cradle (with two charging slots) and two NiMH battery packs. Each radio also comes with a battery-level meter on its display to indicate the power level.

Customer Reviews:
Great for the price!.......2007-08-22
I purchased this product to use on a cruise to stay in contact with our 17 year old son...they worked GREAT!! We use these ALL the time! Not only for the ship, (got pretty good reception through all the metal and concrete, etc.) but while we were at port, theme parks, the mall, shopping strips, sporting events...I could go on and on!
The only down side is the the lower channels don't get as good reception. The farther away you get from each unit, the poorer the reception, which is only to be expected. We paid $29 for our set, and feel we have gotten more than our money's worth! We haven't tested the exact distance, but they work well enough for us as far as we've gone!
We love these radios, and will use them till they fall apart, and that my friend, seems like it will be a long time from now!
Great for keeping track of my kids.......2006-07-22
I live in a typical suburban subdivision, absolutely indistinguishable from the hundreds of thousands of similar neighborhoods around the US. I give one of these to my kids and let them go to the parks, their friends' houses, etc. I can reach them easily and they can reach me. The reception is great for us, but we haven't tried it over about 3 miles.
Worth The Price.......2006-03-12
At about $15 shipped these radios are certainly worth the price and function as an excellent intercom between houses on the property where I live. They also were useful at a recent convention held at the LAX Hilton where they communicated through 6 concrete floors!
However the claim of a 6-mile range has yet to be substantiated and appears to depends largely on a clear and completely unobstructed line-of-sight.
In reality the practical range is more like half a mile to a mile and then only when using the GMRS channels; FRS channels have a hard time reaching beyond 200-250 yards in urban use!
The belt clips supplied with the units are practically useless as they grip poorly but did help point up the durability of the units: I dropped one out of my pocket onto rough pavement going around a corner on my motor scooter at about 25mph and after retrieving the radio (thankfully NOT run over) discovered it not only held together and functioned perfectly, it did not even show evidence of any cosmetic damage!
The supplied battery packs take and hold a charge from the drop-in charging cradle approximately 3 times as long as alkaline batteries.
The radios themselves are feature-rich yet relatively uncomplicated, and includes squelch sub-codes for each channel which aids in clear communications and a scan feature that's handy for monitoring multiple channels.
These units would be entirely suitable for keeping in touch at swap meets or sporting events or between vehicles driving cross country, but don't expect to talk across town with them.
Not bad - not quite 6 miles though.......2006-02-22
They are a good size and the charger is compact. However, not quite sure on the 6 miles as advertised - most channels get static and other people talking at less than 1 mile away.
what a radio .......2005-12-31
this walkie talkie is awesome you can serew with people and make them really mad you can also do channel scans awesome! i recomand this walkie talke for sure. have fun

Fairly Decent -- I've Used Better, And I've Used Worse.......2006-07-02
These are not bad radios, but I didn't like that they run on AAA batteries, because hi-capacity AAA's just don't exist...I prefer AA cells. Currently, AAA Ni-MH cells are available in 1000mAH capacity, the higher the number the better.
I used these on a 10-acre location with plenty of trees and a few buildings. The owner was inside a trailer, which is referred to in geek terms as a Faraday cage, since it's surrounded in metal.
The 638's performed flawlessly, and with very good audio. We used channel 13 with a privacy code, with no difficulty.
Normally, I'm a Motorola user, but I'd take a pair of these just because they're lower-priced. But, if I'm gonna switch to using Uniden radios, I may as well get their top-of-the-line with "all the tricks", because it'd be worth the money.
Bottom line: GET THESE if you want a basic radio with basic tone squelch (privacy codes) and you'll do just fine. Otherwise, look at Uniden's more expensive models with weather alert and more privacy codes.
Good Range.......2006-02-14
I'm not sure about the claimed 6 mile range but I use these to communicate with coworkers on the NYC Subway system. It comes in loud and clear from the 1st car to the last ,getting past all that metal, glass and electrical interference with no problem.
Wouldn't be without it.......2005-09-03
Have had this unit for a long time, not exactly sure how long , but close to a year I think.
I am disabled and these radios allow me to be in voice contact with my helpers at all times. They can be outside or on a different floor in the house and I can call them with crystal clear reception, always. The radios have never failed to work, and have gone as long as 48hrs. without being recharged and were still working well. The only reason I gave a 4 rating rather than a 5 is because on occassion 1 of the units sqwaks and during the night it is a rude awakening, but it only happens occassionally.

Not exacly six miles.......2005-03-15
This walkie talkie does not have a six mile range! I bought one of these at wal-mart while my brother bought the other and the prices there were higher than this price. They are right about 22 channels but I still don't understand why they say a six mile range. I don't mean it was bad, it is better than cobra. Another cool thing about it is that you can switch your ringer and has five altogether. Three of them sound like songs. It's easier to turn on than the cobra one's and the screen is bigger. I don't blame the people who say it isn't that good and isn't that bad.
Too good to be true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-15
This walkie-talkie is so good you can switch your ringer! it has 22 channels and has a six mile range! it has a very smooth outside.

6 miles huh?.......2005-01-28
6 miles is not happening. Not three and not even 1 for me while inside my house and my wife in a car. Granted there is interference from the engine and my house but she didn't even get 1/2 mile away and the signal was gone. We use them in Lowes and Wal-Mart when we go our separate ways and they are fine but don't expect to talk at any distance. We did pick up a conversation from a fire truck in front of us once. There is an FCC statement about getting a license to use these and that is not realistic at all. They should not sell them for $20 as walkie talkies if you need a license.
Great product!.......2004-11-13
My husband bought these for our teenage son and his friend to use at the farm, which is in a low lying area surrounded by hills where reception is notoriously bad. The boys had a great time all day, moving around and using them in open fields, on the hills and in wooded areas, staying well within 2 miles of each other. Programming was easy and voices came through clearly wherever they were. They were interested only talking back and forth and didn't try the more complex features. My husband was so impressed with this set that he bought another pair as a backup and I'm going to buy at least 2 more pairs as Christmas gifts. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because we haven't tested all the features yet.

Not worth the money!!!!.......2007-06-16
I got an iPod mini as a gift from my parents for my birthday almost 2 years ago. I have had to have the Apple store replace it with a new one twice. The first one that I got wouldn't turn on at all. The second one, the wheel wouldn't stay locked, then it wouldn't hold a charge, and by the time I brought back to the store it was completely spazzing. The third and most recent replacement mini that they gave me had been working fine but as i was using it, all of a sudden the screen faded so now the screen is useless. The people at the Apple store told me that they had never seen this happen before and had no idea why it happened. Its not under warranty anymore and they told me that the only thing I could do would be to send it to an online repair shop or basically use it as an iPod shuffle. I never dropped any of the iPods, they never got wet, there is no rhyme or reason (even the Mac genius' couldn't figure out why this has happened) for why I have had 3 of them not work. This iPod mini has been nothing but a hassle for the past 2 years, please save yourself the time, effort, and money. I wish someone had warned me.
Absoluely fabulous!.......2007-05-13
This produc was delivered earlier than expected and in great shape. My family loves having an iPOD to enjoy their favorite music. Great service and a great item. Thanks.
iPod Mini.......2007-03-22
I was a little disappointed by the condition of the iPod-several scratches and dents. So I think it was a bit overpriced, considering the appearance. Since returning the iPod once for service, it has worked fine.

Excellent value.handles and works well for Audio books, lots of storage space for many books and lots of music.

Love it. It's great. Easy to use. Small. Excellent. No complaints.
