It turns out that the Olympus instructions omit the second part of installing the drivers that allow download. I found instructions on another site.
1) Install the software from the CD.
2) LEAVE THE CD IN THE DRIVE FOR THE FIRST CONNECTION
3) Connect the VN device. If the Windows "found new hardware" routine comes up automatically, then just work through that. Choose "automatic" when it asks where to look for the drivers.
4) If the "found new hardware" doesn't come up automatically, use the "add new hardware" feature in the control panel.
5) My installer found two different possible infs - one was the VNUSB the other was oem... Use the one that is highlighted by the installer, which for me was not the VNUSB
6) The hardware installer will complete as usual and recognize the device.
It still has a clunky file and folder structure, but will do for voice recording.

Just awful.......2006-06-17
1. Olympus doesn't provide drivers online. Why not? It's not like they have any value if you haven't purchased the player already.
2. The VN series is evidently not compatible with Windows Vista. It won't let me reinstall the drivers.
3. The forced file hierarchy (A, B, C groups) is dumb and causes problems. Why can't I just plug it in and drag/drop your files in Windows Explorer?
4. When you speak, S's pop even when you're a couple of feet away.
I wish I had purchased another brand.

If you go to Olympus' website, you'd expect to find the driver for this DVR, but no...not Olympuss. Spend your money on a product that is supported...always. It's easy to google and see if they support their stuff. If support is the most difficult thing about them, there is a reason.

I document meetings at work so we got an Olympus VN-480-PC Digital Voice Recorder at work. It did not last one day before I got an "ERR" message. It never worked again. We returned it and will never get one ever.
Voice recorder fine, but PC drivers don't work.......2005-11-12
If you can get the driver for this to install on Windows XP Pro, you're a better man than I. The CD software seems to install OK but then when you connect the recorder to the PC with the USB cable, the PC wants to install a driver manually. If you tell Windows not to install the driver (since, I thought, it was already installed off the CD), Windows doesn't recognize the recorder and the Digital Wave player software doesn't see any of the files on the recorder. On the other hand, if you do tell Windows to install the driver and manually point it to the VNUSB.INF file on the CD, it comes back with an error message and the Digital Wave player software still doesn't see the recorder. This is what it did on my PC at work; on my PC at home, results were even worse--it froze that PC so I couldn't even shut it down normally, but had to hit the reset button. It's been several years since I've seen a driver this kludgey.

Good, convenient way to use your cellphone.......2005-12-20
I have used this headset with Nokia 6620 as well as Nokia 3300 and they work well. The sound is very clear, while I have never used a volume setting above 3 bars (has 7 bars available).
However, sometimes they do not pair well with my device, so I have to turn them off-on in order to work.
I have also used them with my laptop, and the sound is great! As for range, I would say that I never had a problem as long as I was within 20 feet. However, if you use them in the house, walking from room to room, pairing will get lost.
Have also recently the BT-250v but they did not work as well. A lot of chatter and too much background noise, although I was testing them inside my apt, without any noise at all.
Jabra improves on the convenience of cell phones.......2005-12-05
I recently upgraded my cell phone with Verizon's "New every two" program. I added the Jabra BT250V and I love it.
I have Motorola's E815 and the pairing was hassle free. Any name on my contact list on my phone can be accessed by voice command. I didn't have to create "voice tags." For me, I pressed the "mult-function" button, a voice responds through the Jabra, "Say a command." I simply said, "Call Wife." My phone immediately recognized my command and connected me with my wife.
Another benefit, besides the obvious convenience and safety of handsfree dialing, is that I can hear the phone better. I use to practically shove the phone into my ear and still couldn't hear very well. Now, the Jabra hangs loosely on my ear and I can hear great. If I'm having a hard time hearing, I just push the earbud into my ear. I wear my Jabra all day long - about 12+ hours and I hardly notice it.
The BT250V has vibration alert, but I turned it off after a few days. I also have my phone set to answer automatically, so I don't have to do anything, just say, "hello."
I leave it on every night and it seems to hold a charge for about three days. The Jabra I have now is actually a replacement. The first one quit pairing with my phone after a week. This one has been working great for about a month.
The only complaints I have is that I bought mine through Verizon (their insurance plan covers the phone and one accessory according to customer service) and paid twice what I could've gotten one off of ebay for. Also, it took quite a while to get used to the loose feeling it has hanging on my ear. It has never fallen off, but I felt like it should fit more snugly. It comes with two different styles of silicone ear buds - two short ones and two long ones. Memory foam ear buds might be nice?
Overall, I'm very happy with the freedom, convenience and safety of my Jabra and I think you'll be happy, too.
Update: May 1, 2006
If you have trouble with your Jabra pairing with your phone, try plugging it into the Jabra charger and unplugging it. This has never failed to correct a pairing problem for me. I discovered this after returning one Jabra BT250. After using it for nearly five months I am very happy with it.

good feel, but compatibilty problems with my VMU.......2001-04-17
This control does have a good feel, but I discovered ... that there are problems using it with my Virtual Memory Unit (VMU). It often causes the Dreamcast to not recognize the Unit when the system boots up and requires several restarts of the system (including unplugging and replugging) before it "sees" it. This nearly drove me to send the Pad back..., but the feel is so good that I don't even use the Pad that came with the Dreamcast. So if you don't have a VMU or don't care if you need to "go thru the motions" AND the "feel" of the control pad is more important. Go for it.
Great controller with a few flaws.......2001-01-29
At first glance, the High Frequency controller looks a lot the original Sega controller, but with a bright color. The handles slope outwards slightly, but otherwise the shape is identical. In the hands the controller feels solid. The molded plastic feels a lot thicker than the cheap plastic of the Sega controller. The analog sticks are fairly similar. The HF stick is a little thicker and higher than the Sega one. This might make it difficult for children with short thumbs to use it. The HF stick moves more fluidly than the Sega one and has a better feel to it. The HF uses one of those soft, circular digital pads which are comfortable but inaccurate. I prefer the harder, cross shaped design of the Sega controller. The fire buttons of the HF look and feel similar to the buttons of the PS/PS2 dual shock controller. This is definitely better than Sega's buttons which feel hard and cheap like the N64's C buttons. One problem that should be noted with the HF controller is that it has some sort of compatibility problem with the Interact 4X memory card. In order to use the controller with the 4X card you must power up the system, unplug the controller, then plug it back in. Not hard, but slightly annoying. The Sega controller does not have this problem. Finally, it should also be noted that the HF controller is about $8 cheaper than the Sega controller.
I would recommend the HF controller to anyone except: 1. Young children with small thumbs 2. People who play a lot of games that require complicated and exact digital pad moves(i.e. Streetfighter) 3. People who intend to use the 4X memory card with the controller.
Otherwise it is superior to the original Sega controller.

The color of the controler is why I bought it. But after using it, and playing with i find it to be as good, if not better then a the sega controller. It responds a little quicker, and after hours of playing my hands do not cramp at all.

This controller, beats the [stuffing] out of the other controllers for dreamcast, sega's included. Most of the ones by interact and other 2nd part manufacturers were cheaply made and clunky. This one is the exception. As you play, you get an excellent grip on the controller, with satisfyinly easy-to-press buttons, and a tighter control stick (think sega's). If you are thinking of purchasing another controller, this one is the best one I've ever tried.
