A good player, but needs better instructions........2005-01-24

This item arrived with very little information on how to burn and play MP3 files and, in particular, WMA files. I burnt two discs and messed around with the player and my computer for a week before writing Rio and receiving a technician's answer. I appreciated the customer support, but the information really should have been in the player's documentation or on Rio's website. To listen to WMA files, I ended up having to delete and restore the 1200 songs on my computer because I'd stored them initially with the "automatic rights control" (or some such) box checked in the Windows Media Player. After all the headache, and two years of continuous use, I do enjoy having this player. Do remember that it only plays MP3 or WMA files burnt to a disk; it does not function as an MP3 player that stores and plays files in its hardware.

When I first got the thing, I thought it was fantastic. It had all the features I wanted, and wasn't too difficult to figure out on my own. The FM tuner worked as well as my car radio and was a nice perk. The sound was good, too.
The downside, it's skip protection is, well, mediocre. I've certainly seen better, although I have owned worse as well. I wasn't jogging with the thing and it would sufficiently occupy me durring a long car ride, so I didn't really mind. After awhile though, it stopped recognizing any batteries other than the rechargables it came with. I know it sounds weird; I still don't know why. Not to mention recharging takes a really long time, and the battery life is also mediocre. I can't get more than 2 or 3 hours from it. Consequently, the thing seems to never have any power to it, and I can't use any other batteries. Heaven forbid I don't charge it every day. It'd be a nice player, if I could actually use it. I don't know that this is something inherent in the player, or if it's just a flaw in my unit, but it makes me extreamly hesitant to spend any money on Rio products.

I have had mine for a year now and it kicks azz! I don't think they break so easy, since mine was wedged between a metal stopper and an iron crate being pushed by a forklift! It dented the batteries in the case, I can't charge the batteries in the player anymore and the lid is a tad bit crooked, but it still plays perfect and the display works fine too. That convinced me that is was rock solid. Just hope you don't have any problems with it, because Riovolt has the worst customer service ever rated, they are horrible to talk to. just so you know.

**** I wrote a review in here earlier about how strong it is. It got crushed by a forklift and still works. I have now had it for 2 years (actually my little brother has it), and it's still kicking strong. The SP250 was designed by the same people who designed the iriver iMP-350, and the menus look almost exactly the same. I have since upgreaded to the iMP-450, a new model from iRiver, and am a tad happier. I bought my Riovolt for $100 and it was worth it then. But after the forklift mishap, it stopped recharging batteries, and the batteries got a dent in each of them, and I wanted to recharge them at work. The case it comes with is VERY nice and got used all the time. I didn't have to buy a case for it that way and it saved me some dough. Plus, all the buttons were imprinted in the leather on the case, so you could push the buttons through the case without seeing them. The batteries lasted fine, about 12-14 hours with MP3 playback. The remote was great. I now have the iMP-450 and wish I had the SP250 remote. There is the cool level to having a slim case with a screen on the remote, but the buttons aren't as easy to hit by feel. I believe they are actually interchangeable, since I know you can order a LCD remote for the SP250. I just can't do it with mine cuz there's no screen on the main unit. But the SP250 remote was the best designed one I've seen, and I've looked at a lot of MP3/CD players, since everyone in my family wants one now. I guess I would recommend the iMP-450 over this one, cuz of the cool factor, the battery life, ongoing firmware support, tech support is slightly better, new technologies in place (like solid servo to stop skipping), more menu options, and price. I bought mine for 100 bucks, the iMP-450 is $120 on Amazon, and now Amazon shows this unit for $200, which is too much.

Great player.......2004-03-02

I have had mine for over a year now and haven't had any trouble. Mine gets extremely lite use, (I only use it every other month), but the the case has held up. I've taken it on several trips and never had a problem. I'm sure to keep it in the included case although it is a bit ugly it prevents scratching and gives a little cushion if you drop it. The sound quality is excellent and I haven't had any trouble with the firmware. Battery life is acceptable and the controls are easy. I haven't had any skipping problems either. Overall I would recomend it, but if you need a rough and tumble player this is not for you. Spend the extra cash and go with a flash or hard drive based player.

I've had one for a year.......2003-12-26

I was issued this player when I began my training. It is a pretty good player. It comes with 2 sets of headphones. AC adapter, rechargable batteries, carrying case, remote, and some software. I don't really believe it is worth the money for what I use it for. I don't use the radio. I only use it to listen to music now and used it to listen to MP3 files on discs issued to me for class. I think it is a bit ridiculous to have an 8 minute shock protection, especially when mine skips when I run. I had to stop it and didn't even use it the last time I ran because it was skipping so bad. I have dropped mine a few times and now it makes a funny noise when the cd rotates, but it still works. I know people who have said that it is easy to break the plastic. I know someone who has to use a rubber band to keep it closed. I think it is a nice player, however I am very disappointed in the 8 minute skip protection that doesn't work, I really don't think it is worth the price.

iTunes/OS X Written All Over It.......2004-03-07

100% PLUG AND PLAY! I plugged it into my firewire port of my Blue White G3 Macintosh and it went to work! iTunes recognized it automatically, and OS X (Jaguar) lets me move files off and on to the disk until I get ready to shut down the computer and then at that time it will burn the CD! I think the best thing I like about it is that there was NO SOFTWARE to install. If you want a GOOD, FAST, RELIABLE CD Burner at a reasonable price I would deffintly recommend this one

About the size of a small cordless phone, the bright-yellow and black Rino 110 has two fixed antennas coming out of the top. One antenna lets you talk at up to two miles using 14 FRS (Family Radio Service) channels. It also can communicate across 8 GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) channels, offering up to 5 miles of range, though this requires an FCC license.

The other antenna offers the advanced WAAS-enabled GPS tracking you'd expect from Garmin (see chart at right). Using the large 160 x 160 pixel backlit display you can save up to 20 different routes and 500 waypoints in the unit's 1 MB of memory. Plus, in addition to the built-in cities database, you can even upload maps from Garmin's Points of Interest CD with an optional adapter.

The fun really starts when you combine these two features. The Rino can transmit its location to others at up to two miles and track up to 50 contacts simultaneously. So, for instance, you can display a map on the screen with the names and locations of all of your friends, or select a friend and have the Rino guide you to their location.

The Rino's graphical interface makes it easy to control its myriad functions with a 5-way cursor, similar to those found on laptop keyboards, which lets you move quickly across the menu screens. This waterproof device runs on 3 AAA batteries.

Less than advertised.......2004-01-01

This device is advertised on its own packaging as being compatible with Windows 98, period. There is nothing about Windows 98 SE being the only version that is compatible. In fact, the tech folks at Fujifilm have been unable to get my IBM computer with Windows 98 to work with this device. It works fine with my Gateway laptop running Windows 2000 but a major reason why I got this was so that I could carry data back and forth between the two computers. Fujifilm's support is polite, incompetent and prone to using "canned" responses. If you have Windows 98 do not consider this product! [By the way, on the day I tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to install this, I had absolutely no problems installing an Iomega Zip 250 drive (USB, host-powered)! Iomega gets it; Fujifilm does not.]

In many of our PDA reviews, we say that PDAs can keep you working while you're on the road. In this case, we put that statement to the test; part of this review was written on the Jornada itself. You can organize your appointments, to-do list, address book, and more while you're traveling. You can also keep up with the latest news and stay connected to your desktop, all in beautiful color with the HP Jornada 420.

To set up the Jornada, we installed the battery pack, connected the AC power cord, placed the Jornada in its docking cradle, and followed the on-screen instructions. Then, we installed Microsoft Windows CE Services 2.2 and followed its setup wizard. The process was entirely straightforward, made painless by following the Getting Started card.

When you turn on the Jornada 420, you'll notice its CSTN LCD display--a type of passive matrix display--has colors that are as bright as those on many active matrix displays. You navigate through the Jornada's core information management applications by pressing several side-mounted buttons, designed for one-handed operation, or by tapping the stylus on the backlit display. The display has a transparent plastic shield to protect the screen while you read from it. The Jornada 420 is very comfortable to hold and operate. For text input, you have your choice of tapping the on-screen keyboard or using the Jot handwriting system.

In our test, on the desktop PC, we added a mobile channel to Microsoft Internet Explorer's channels. (The feature does not work with Netscape Navigator.) We then set the ActiveSync options to include channels during the synchronization process. After synchronization, we could read information from the channel at our leisure. We also moved a Note Taker file from the Jornada's My Documents folder to our desktop PC, where the file became part of this review.

As part of the HP family of PDAs, the Jornada 420 inherits many fine characteristics, such as rugged good looks, but as the smallest and most portable member, we also appreciated its unique identity.

My first and, so far, only PDA.......2006-10-12

Yeah, it's big. Yeah it's clunky. But I've had this PDA now for about 5 years, and it's never failed me. Not once. I originally bought it because I thought it was cool (at the time). Didn't use it that much except to keep a few addresses and phone numbers in. Mostly it stayed on a shelf collecting dust. I recently moved, stuck it in a box, and there it sat for another 2 or so years. Finally unpacked it a week ago, plugged it in, charged it up, and it runs as good as it did the first day out of the box. I've long since lost the sync cable and associated software so I can't upload anything to it, but it serves my purpose quite well. Storing contact info, to do lists, appointments, random musings, etc. The Jot handwriting recognition software works very well too.
I've spent the last week researching newer Palm OS, and Windows OS PDA's, weighing the pro's and con's of each and came to one conclusion. HP built a heckuva unit with the Jornada 420. I'll probably stick with it for a long time despite it's clunkiness, volatile memory, and short battery life.

Where is the MP3 player?.......2004-02-02

I bought this thinking it would be my do-it-all device. Voice recorder, address book, calendar/to do list, and mp3 player. It does it all except the MP3 player part. A reviewer said he loved the MP3 player capability. -NOT- If you load MP3 files into it, there is no player to play them. At least Win CE can not find anything to use to play them. Is the player an add on? If so, where can I get it.

You can also own one second-hand now at an EXTREMELY reasonable price. I've had mine for about six months now and it works great! I love it's mp3 feature, love the color screen, the battery life and the durability.
If I could have two wishes though, I wish it was a USB device. Transferring larger mp3 files from my pc just takes way too long over a serial connection. I had to buy a compact flash card reader to circumvent the problem.
I also found I have a real dislike for Windows CE. You have this beautiful color screen and it's just too cramped up with windows. Palm's OS really seems to flow better. I had heard that Window's new 'Pocket PC' OS had solved a lot of these problems, but I've yet to use it.
All in all though, it's an awesome buy for the price!

WHEN I RECIEVED THE JORNADA, I WAS QUITE AMAZED AT IT'S CONDITION. IT WAS NEARLY PERFECT AS ADVERTISED, EVEN THE BOX. ONLY INSIGNIFICANT COSMETIC BLEMISH ON THE CLEAR COVER, BUT I THINK THAT'S TO BE EXPECTED SINCE IT'S A USED ITEM. OTHERWISE, THE DISPLAY HAS GOOD COLOR RESOLUTION. SINCE I'M NOT AT ALL FAMILIAR WITH WINDOWS CE, I'M HAVING SOME PROBLEMS, BUT I'M SURE THAT I'LL OVERCOME THEM. ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A VERY PLEASANT TRANSACTION WITH ONLY ONE EXCEPTION. I'D HOPED THE ITEM TO BE SHIPPED VIA UPS. IT WAS SHIPPED USING PRIORITY MAIL, BY U.S. POSTAL SERVICE, & I HAD TO TAKE A COUPLE HOURS OFF WORK & GO TO THE POST OFFICE TO SIGN FOR THE ITEM. BUT, SINCE IT WAS SUCH A GOOD DEAL, THAT WAS A VERY SMALL INCONVENIENCE THAT I CAN LIVE WITH. I WOULDN'T HESITATE MAKING ANOTHER PURCHASE THROUGH AMAZON.COM.........

Much better than Palm.......1999-09-26

This Windows CE device was what I needed after being tethered to a Palm Pro for over a year. I couldn't do much with the Palm, other than read mail and take notes. Now, it looks and feels like I'm taking my desktop with me. I bought a 32MB CF card with it, and I'm happy with it.

The only thing to improve would be the sound. That little speaker doesn't put out enough volume, however, through earphones it sounds good.
