The c340 is designed with simplicity in mind, although Garmin hasn't forgotten to add a touch of class. With a weight of under ten ounces and a width of 4.4 inches, the c340 is ultracompact and easy to transport. To keep confusion on the road to a minimum, the only buttons are a rotary volume knob and an on/off switch. just bought the Garmin C340 after reading reviews about it.
Received it a few days before going on a trip from eastern Long Island to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Getting off Long Island and Staten Island, we were is disagreement, that is the C340 and I, For the fastest route, it would have taken us way up north and for the shortest route, through all the side streets of Brooklyn and Staten Island.Neither was the way, I wanted to go. So I think, there could be some improvement of customizing your trip.
But once we gotten into unfamiliar territory, it was great. Lead to the destination without any problems. Would buy it again.
Garmin Street Pilot c340.......2007-09-21
I recently purchased the Garmin Street Pilot c340 from Amazon. I was very impressed that I just turned the unit on and added the desired address and the unit brought me to my destination. I have been using it for over a month now and I'm sorry I did not purchase one of these earlier. Also I was going to purchase this unit at another retailer but Amazon beat their price by about $30.00.

Spend the extra $50 and go for the c550.......2007-09-20
The c550 came with a car rental and I loved it. I did the research and figured I would save a few $$ and go for the c340. Bad move - I returned it and got the c550 instead. The 340 does an adequate job but: 1) mount kinda sucks (compared with the 550), 2) it's SLOW at aquiring satellites and finding POIs, 3) the GLARE ON THE SCREEN IS HORRIBLE.
The c550 comes with anti-glare screen, FM traffic adapter included(!), rocket fast, and has a great mount.
Do yourself a favor - I wish someone had told me.
It's just what I needed!.......2007-09-20
I wanted a GPS and I was really sold on the Tom Tom until my wife decided that I could not spend $500 on it! Shoot. Well a friend of mine suggested the Garmin and I found out that the c340 really fit the bill. I really love the text to speech feature which means the streets are called out by name. A crucial feature when you are navigating in uncharted territory. But thanks to the Garmin, its all charted! I have seen a couple of misses. It lead me to a couple of resturants that were out of business, not a big problem but I still am not sure how the map will ever get updated. It did find me gas in the middle of nowhere (Colorado/Wyoming border), which at 10pm was a lifesaver! All of the street and road data has been spot on. I really like that it recalcultes the route when I blow the turn, this happens more than I care to admit. The distance feature is not as accurate as I would like when indicating a turn, I'd say it is about 70-90 feet off, but now I know to compensate and I usually hit the right street. It also knows about one way streets which helps a great deal.
I highly recommend this unit!

Pros:
- You can use the GPS to find locations like Restaurants, Gas, etc.
- You can also do a search by name, like Starbucks, and it will display a list with the ones around your location;
- Your route shouldn't have to be from A to B. Your route can be A to B to C to D.
- There is a dashboard which shows few stats of your trip like current speed, average moving speed, time moving, time stopped, etc;
Cons:
- I miss the ability to define alternatives routes.
- It is cumbersome to move the map when viewing the route. There is no arrow keys to drag the map.
- When zooming out the map it will automatically zoom in when you get close to a turn;
If what you want is a GPS to show your way around the city/state/country, maybe find some places to go while on the road and has a limited budget, you'll be satisfied by this one.
great choice for novices.......2007-09-18
Purchased this gps system after carefull review and product searching. The package arrived within 1 day as I had ordered (great value for next day shipping ..just $13.00). It is ready to go right out of the box as decribed. It is was very easy to set up. Used it today to get to work just to test and was happy. The real test will be later this week as I journey to CT. form PA. I have confidence that it will work just fine. I'll update upon my return.

The Garmin Street Pilot C330 is an excellent tool. There are some instances where it gives incorrect directions. For the most part it does very well. I think it is especially handy for being able to identify upcoming streets at night when street signs are hard to see.

This is my first GPS and I found the Garmin C530 very easy to use and set up right out of the box. I have not had it that long and have mostly used it to get to places I already knew where I was going to get a feel for the unit or places that I had some idea on how to get to but was not fully confident of. Except for choosing some routes that I have found over the years to be slightly longer than others when leaving our house to go somewhere, it has gotten me where I wanted to go in a fairly direct route. This past weekend I did have to go to a town in a different part of the state and to an address I did not know how to get to and it worked like a charm and took me the way I would have expected.
The biggest issue I have is being able to select detours. The unit does make re-calculations quickly, but I found that it would first try to make me go in a circle to get back to the route it had initially determined that I should take. Based on my experience to date, having used it as I have, I would recommend this unit to someone looking for an easy to use, but accurate GPS unit and I would not hesitate to purchase the same unit again if I needed to.

This is the first GPS unit I have owned and I love it. I just got it and tested it around town here in San Francisco and it worked flawlessly. I would take a wrong turn on purpose and the time it took to recalculate was very fast. Just got back from San Diego and it took all the stress out of driving all around San Diego and the surrounding areas. I did have to consult a map once because the unit couldn't guess what street I wanted from how I was spelling the name. Other than that, the maps sat in a cubby gathering dust.
If I have a complaint at this time, it would be that the on screen keyboard is not in a QUERTY layout. The letters are merely laid out in alphabetical order. It is something you are not used to doing and it can be VERY frustrating. I searched the Garmin website and they have offered QUERTY layouts in the past. I see no reason to not continue to offer it.

The first one I got lasted three weeks then stopped working. Amazon replaced it, the second one stopped working yesterday (lasted 9 months). Garmin says they have an average turn-around of two weeks for repairs (we'll see).
Although I set it for the quickest route, it will opt for the shortest.
Although I set it to avoid toll roads, I end up on toll roads.
Although I set it to avoid u-turns, she wants me to make u-turns.
One time was looking for a restaurant in upstate NY, we picked one name (out of many listed) which sounded interesting and ended up at a horse farm.
I rated it 3 out of 5 because; 1)Price was good. 2)It lists the next cross street in map mode which is nice to have at night. 3)It's better than not having it.
I'm now stuck with this model. If I could do it again, I'd try a different model

Demo Model??.......2007-09-01
This model performs very well, but when I tried to install Map Update 2008 (City Navigator North America NT), I received an error message. After numerous phone calls to Garmin (their staff were extremely nice and have bent over backwards to help me with this situation), I learned that I had a Demo Model and that it can't be updated. Garmin is going to exchange my unit for one that has Map Update 2008 already installed. So how did I get a Demo Model? I have no idea, but be careful when you order these units; you never know what you're getting. Overall, I'd give the unit itself 4 1/2 stars and the place that sold it to me 2 stars.

Pop out of the box, turn it on, go!.......2007-09-03
My wife and I have been using this for about a week. Just perfect for our needs: less-stress traveling to unfamiliar places, no trying to squint at maps while driving (I hadn't realized what a stress and how dangerous it is, trying to read a mapquest or map when driving, constantly referring to each new turn instead of focusing on the road) and it works like a dream. So easy to use, finds restaurants, gas stations, lodging, or tap in the name on the touchscreen and it'll find markets, stores, all kinds of stuff.
I downloaded and upgraded the firmware from Garmin, it's a breeze, just install the unit's software on your PC first (follow instructions to the letter and it's simple), then download the automatic upgrader from the Garmin site, and in a couple minutes, you're current.
It acquires satellites here (upstate NY) in 20 seconds or less, and picks excellent routes. If you want to go a different way, it instantly recalculates a new route and sends you on your way.
Wonderful product, does what it's supposed to do, simple to use, easy to pop out of the windshield mount and stick in your windbreaker pocket, purse or glove compartment. I love it! I can't imagine how I lived without it (I get lost all the time up there in these windy country roads)!

I found in using the GPS that I purchased thru Amazon that it did not have streets on it that are over 3 years old. I thought that I would be getting a more current version of maps.

I had a cobra navone 3000, compared to this one, it was so big, bulky and no touch screen. I bought this one for my dad who speaks only chinese and loves driving. He loves it! It has English too!! I can use it also! great direction and many navagation preference choices. I recommend to even non asian users!! for asian users, it is hell of a deal!!

I own this unit and here are the options on the the languages menu that you can select: The manual and box fails to mention Cantonese voice, which is a HUGE selling point for many Chinese people in the US.

Nice! My wife had a problem with the unit taking a really long time to find the satellites initially, but that problem only occurred twice. The unit is great for finding restaurants and stores due to it's internal library. I'm a little fuzzy about how to keep the listings updated, and I get the feeling you have to subscribe to a pay service(?) My cousin wanted a unit that would recalculate if you don't follow the directions suggested by the unit, and this model does this well. You have to get used to the unit telling you to "in 200 feet, turn right", but you are already in that intersection. I guess the unit assumes that you are driving the speed limit on surface streets! hee hee The unit has an English setting, so luckily for me, this isn't only for Asian languages.

Why Center City?.......2007-09-18
Does not recommend Interstate bypasses (except, strangely, for I-285 around Atlanta) but rather directs you through center city. If you take the bypass it tries to get you back to the Interstate. Keep ignoring it and it finally will run out of options and direct you back to the Interstate where you want to be. I keep ignoring it so much in these cases that I expect it to insult me for being stupid--in fact it would be kind of funny if it did.
Also, I have seen some new sights following its directions.
The 320c, for the price, can't be beat.
Excellent in most respects.......2007-08-29
This was a gift I gave my husband. He loves it and was thrilled with the gift. Flexible and easy-to-use with a clear, easy-to-understand voice (important because my husband is partially deaf). The graphics are clear, but not extremely useful. My only problem with the system is that the list of restaurants does not seem to be up-to-date. This led us on a couple of wild goose chases for coffee. However, we could add our own, which was great. I would buy this again...and may get one for myself.
Cheap GPS.......2007-08-21
I purchased the Streetpilot C320 in February 2007 and has several successful trips. In August 2007 I took a crosscountry trip from Mississippi to South Carolina. The unit could not obtain a satellite lock during the entire trip. The Garmin help line helped me trouble shoot the problem and determined I needed to upgrade the software. The problem still persists. I called the helpline a second time and they showed me how to reset the entire system. The system reset erases all my programmed locations. The reset allowed the gps to get a satellite lock. However, everytime I turn off the system, it must be reset to get a lock, each time erasing my programmed locations. This is a cheap device that doesn't perform as advertised. I hope Garmin will honor the 12 month warranty and replace my gps with a device that works.

This contraption saved my marriage. We went on a road trip to Massachusetts for our honeymoon. Boston is not the easiest city to get around in. Our c320 kept us out of poor navigation fights.

First time GPS Owner - Very impressed.......2006-07-31
I purchased this as my first GPS for a family vacation. Researched quite a few and decided upon the c550 because of brand name and simplicity. Overall a great little device, very intuitive, easy to use. Got us to where we wanted to go "most (99%)" of the time. Two preprogrammed locations, a Toy Train museum in PA and a restaurant in GA were way off. The first landed us at a very nice Amish farmers house - not many toy electric trains there and the second, for the restaurant, in an office park. Both locations several miles off. I'll report the details on the Garmin page to see if future updates make corrections. Only one additional trip point can be added to a trip but you can change them out as you go. Apparently with MapSource products by Garmin, purchased separately, you can add more - I'm not clear on this - still learning the difference between waypoints, trip points, points of interest, etc. At any rate I hope this is changed in future updates. The Bluetooth sync'd to my phone and works very well as a speaker phone. It has MP3 capability but in my opinion you get better sound quality from an old AM transistor radio and this is just a feature I will not use. The provided mounting is a bit cumbersome. I would prefer it come with a friction mount, an available option, but the suction devices do work. I'll be adding an optional friction mount... The voice directions are very computer like sometimes the pronunciation is off but is usually understandable. The GTM 20 Traffic Message Channel is extremely convenient and does a great job of helping to avoid traffic jams. Overall I really like my new gadget!
Update: C550 GTM 20 Blowing its Fuse
The following is a problem I am having with the GTM 20 integrated FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver, antenna and cigarette lighter adapter supplied with the c550. I have reported this via email and telephone to Garmin. The Garmin Tech - who was very helpful - said this is a first and is exchanging the GTM 20 for one from the factory.
Here is the reported issue:
"The GTM 20 supplied with my new c550 blows its fuse every time I plug it into either of my vehicles, car and van, lighter outlets. The fuse blows with or when power is applied to the lighter outlet regardless of whether or not the c550 is attached. I returned my orgianl brand new c550 to Circuit City because after 2 weeks of flawless performance it started exhibiting this behavior. Now, out of the box this c550's GTM 20 is doing the same. All other 12v adapters for phone, etc work properly in both vehicles. As noted above the c550 I just returned worked perfectly for about 2 weeks, in both automobiles and now this new, out of the box c550s GTM 20 is doing the same thing."
FURTHER UPDATE:
I received the replacement GTM 20 for my c550 directly from Garmin and it is working perfectly in both vehicles, it has not blown its fuse yet.
The first GTM 20 worked for about 2 weeks, the second failed right out of the box. Both units came from the same Circuit City store.
While waiting for the replacement GTM I purchased a standard Garmin 12 volt car adapter and it works correctly in both vehicles.
I'm sure Garmin engineers designed and completely tested the GTM 20 before going to production and that in the lab and all subsequent evaluations it performed to standard. If my latest GTM 20 continues to work then I believe Garmin may have a defective lot of GTM 20s out there. If this new GTM fails after a few weeks of use then I believe there potentially may be an issue with their manufacturer.
I would encourage you to call Garmin tech support if you experience this, endure the wait - enjoy the on hold music, and report your issue. I spoke with a gentleman named Scott and he was very helpful. I did receive a response from the initial e-mail inquiry I sent their tech support and basically they said they had never heard of the problem, have a great day.... Telephone was the way to go.

Traffic receiver, a necessity in metro. city. For $5/month, this system shows you ways around traffic you never thought existed.
