Handspring's first foray into the realm of color palmtops, the Visor Prism may not deliver the crispness of displays on the latest Windows CE devices from Casio and Compaq, but it does improve on the Palm IIIc, its main competitor.

While the Prism costs more than the Palm IIIc, its increased color depth and brightness (it delivers 16-bit color compared to the 8-bit color of the IIIc) really shines in gaming and graphical applications. Even the default world map that's used to set geographic location and time appeared more distinct and offered the illusion of 3-D.

Like other Visors, the Prism contains a Springboard module slot, letting users upgrade its capabilities--such as adding an MP3 player, expanding memory, and eventually adding a cell phone (among many options). With the color screen of the Prism, modules such as the eyemodule digital camera really take on new life. With the Prism, the eyemodule takes color pictures, while previous versions of the Visor only allowed users to view them in grayscale.

Further, unlike other Visors, the Visor Prism uses an internal lithium-ion rechargeable battery--a nice touch as the color display would have drained the standard two AAAs quickly. Handspring claims that a fully charged battery should last a week or two with normal use, but we found continuous use of the display, such as with game playing or extended note taking, wore the battery down much faster. However, every time the Prism syncs in the fast-transferring USB cradle, the battery gets charged--and it only takes a few minutes to top off the current level of juice.

Although the color screen only extends the thickness of the Prism by a tenth of an inch compared to previous Visors, it's still twice as thick as the sleek Palm V line of devices. But it is smaller than CE devices such as Casio's EM-500 and the Compaq iPaq, and for its size category of palmtops, it delivers the best colors around. --J. Curtis

3 years with my Prisim.......2004-08-30

I have had my Prisim for 3 years now, The hard shell cover has allowed me to carry, (and sit on )it for all of the 3 years. The 8 meg is plenty for normal use.
It is in use every day, and backedup/charged just as frequently.
I know there are more advanced units out there, with more features and such, but I dred the day I will need to find a replacement that can measure up to this one when it is gone.
I never leave home without it for sure!

Brilliant value for PDAphone (Visor Prism+Phone).......2004-05-21

I've been using Visor Prism + Phone for about 2 months now, I bought it from a local store which suprisingly still had some stocks and guaranteed the item for 1 year.
Overall, I found it very very useful. I'm not a heavy PDA user, so mainly I use it to read e-books, see photos, games. Visor's 8 Megs is more than enough.
More about the phone, I can't tell how much I admire the modularity of Springboard. Handspring engineer have done great job. The phone and sms function work perfect, compared to the more pricey Tungsten W.
It's better than Treo 270 I assume, on color display (Treo has 4096 while Prism has 65K) and of course using Visor I don't have to worry about flip hinge crack that often happen to Treo user.
Some drawbacks that I found is that battery drained quickly, I also notice that there are some dead pixels in the unit I bought, and last but not least it's quite heavy to carry.
Based on the above, I still think that this product is a great collectible item,worth the price, and everywhere you carry it people were just curious to know. It's a bit rare that to some it's more intriguing than even the popular O2 XDA. Well done Handspring!

I replaced my Prism with a Palm M515 and I miss my Visor!! If I knew then how difficult it would be to replace I would have purchased several more, kept a nice inventory and and made a profit on the rest. Handspring made a VERY nice color PDA.....I hope PalmOne stays with it...

Long-time Owner & User and Love It!!.......2003-12-22

I have had my Prism for years now and absolutely love it. Loved it so much that when my wife was ready for a PDA, she got one too. We have Targus keyboards, the Magellan GPS, modems, Eyemodule camera, tons of memory and applications and now we can get apps and accessories for next to nothing!! She dropped hers the other day, broke the chassis, and will probably buy another--cheaper than repairing!! I was in a hurry in the car connecting the GPS, smashed the Springboard pins and will probably buy another as well!! Sorry for those with bad experiences, but we've had great service with ours. Obviously, a new power-user would want something more up-to-date, but for a student or someone like me who has had their Prism for a while, it still proves to be a great value!!

I have now been through two of these, I might be silly but I expect to get more than a year and a half out of my investment. Customer service stinks and is a rip off. Both Prisims are garbage for numerous reasons, not batteries, they were changed. If you want something that will last awhile don't get it. And I don't have any other software on there except Datebook.

great backup.......2005-05-06

I brought this module years ago to backup my visor, especially since I did not own a computer at the time. It was a lifesaver, allowing me to restore everything upon replacing batteries. There were a few times I misplaced the visor in the house and (of course two months or so later) once I found it the batteries were completely dead. The backup module restored everything perfectly.

Hotsyncing with the Visor can be a pain: it takes a long time and it's sometimes dificult to get the Visor to sit it's in cradle. When you want to put files from your Visor onto the computer, there's no alternative, but if you're just backing up files, this module is excellent. You press one button, wait a minute, and everything is backed up. This is especially important because I've found that replacing batteries in the Visor sometimes deletes the data. Restoring from the backup module is then a one step process. Retoring from hotsync would first entail reinstalling all of the software and then hotsyncing the data. It's a little pricey and is something of a luxury, but it makes life much easier, especially if you're on the go.

I hot sync with a backup buddy already. However, I travel quite a bit, and this neat little module is just the best. It is very easy to use. . . simply put in the slot and tap an icon. . . and then you have a backup with you at all times, even when you can't get to your desktop.

I bought this item while on a trip to New York. While I was there, all my info on my visor went corrupt. At that point, I went out and bought this little item. So far, its been great. The reason I gave it a 5 is for its durability. I had, like I usually do with many things, left the module in my pocket overnight in the pants I had on the floor. However, my parents had decided to take those pants and wash them. Once through the washing machine and a run through the dryer. It got out and I was sure it was dead, but nevertheless curious. So, I put it in the visor, and much to my surprise, IT WORKED! Whereas I wouldnt try this at home, its amazing how tough these modules are. Handspring makes the best!

I would like a longer cord length as I'm often sitting on the couch with my laptop when I sync. However, the USB cradle is a solid piece of equipment. If you have USB and a Visor Prism, you may want to consider having two. I like having one for home/travel and one set up permanently at work.

You get what you pay for. The Handspring stylus is FAR superior to the generic stylus they now offer everywhere. from the reset pen in the tip to the screwdriver in the base. It just feels betterin the hand. Like a quality product should.

Top notch product.

Simply plug it into the bottom of your Prism, wait an hour and your Prism is fully charged and ready to go.

I've used it for three months now with no problems whatsoever. The transformer (Converts the AC to DC) is relatively small and it has a long cord for utility.

It should be noted that this travel charger is for plugging into an AC wall outlet, and not for use in an automobiles DC cigarette lighter.

I bought this thinking that it was the same as the original stylus I'd lost. Forget it. It fits well in the slot, works well to write Graffiti, but it does not have the reset pin hidden under the stylus head/cap. If not having a built-in reset pin is not a big deal for you, then this is a good buy.

Still Looking.......2003-01-10

Read the "fine print". I thought I was getting the original Handspring stylus(based on the picture) when in fact it is a black plastic wannabe. Where are the multi colored 5 paks? These work but are much lighter and easy to misplace because they are all black.

Not quite replacements..........2002-12-13

I was a bit disappointed with these 'replacements' - they really aren't (though the accompanying graphic shows stylii that look like the original). These are just black plastic versions that are shaped the same.

Pros: They fit in the stylus holder ok and they're reasonably cheap. You get three and you'll probably lose some so that's nice. Just be sure to put the spares somewhere that you'll remember.

Cons: These are one piece shaped alike versions. They have no removable end with a reset wire like the original. They're sort of crusty to use - just don't feel good in your hand and aren't finished very well.

Overall: They work. It might be hard to find an original replacement now and even if you do they'll be expensive (relatively) and you'll probably lose another one if you lost the first. I'd say they're ok if you can't afford or can't find an original replacement.

Do Not Trust TheFactoryDepot.......2007-05-12

I originally tried to order this item from TheFactoryDepot, but
they tried to rip me off - contacted me by email trying to sell
me something they claim was better, newer, but others are
selling for half the price. They admitted their guilt by not
replying to any of my 9 emails asking for additional details
on this so called better product.

On a lighter side, I got this from someone else and I'm thrilled
about the quality. As one of the worlds top software developers
I demand the best and I can tell you this is it. Just don't waste
your time with TheFactoryDepot - they are not as they appear. I
hope Amazon looks into this, because up until now I never had
any problems with them or any of their vendors.
