        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars the only honest review that wasn't written by a gateway rep.......2007-01-11

first off, you should ignore all other 4 reviews. Not that they don't have some valid things to say, it's just that they're all obviously written by Gateway reps or someone who had a lot of stock in this product. Notice:
        1) they're all written on the exact same day.
        2) none of the reviewers have written about anything other than gateway products.

That aside, this is great concept machine. My main two issues:
        1) it's buggy and quirky
        2) gateway support was completely unhelpful, and declined to support this product after they shipped it

As mentioned, the concept is great. It's a beautiful looking machine. It has good specs to do the job (good speed, good memory, nice hd space, great tuner, good graphics). Gateway put (almost) everything into this you'd need in a media pc: very nice remote; excellent gyration keyboard & mouse that let you do everything from your lap (the "air" mouse function is fantastic); plenty of front ports (media card slots, usb, firewire); dvdrw for recording; digital audio out (when it functions); front display (when it functions); all the video connections you need.

the downsides that make this product barely usable: the one-touch dvdr recording from tv never worked. went through two systems with no luck, ended up having to buy nerovision express to do the job; optical audio failed within days on both systems; front display intermittently flickered and died until restarted (constantly, and on both systems). No support at all for the release of media center 2005 (which was released shortly after the debut of this product). No front display drivers for mce2005 (although this renders it useless except for the time clock, the display no longer flickers with mce2005). Frequent mce software problems include "no recorded tv found" (restarting the media center app fixes the prob), and occasional complete loss of audio (requires system restart). With mce2004, video recording was sometimes choppy. mce2005 fixed the problem, but of course, Gateway won't support the OS on this system.

With all that, I still have a love/hate relationship with this system. When it functions, it's a dream. But the numerous bugs and complete lack of support make it difficult to recommend. And Gateway support was the worst I'd ever experienced (long wait times, completely unknowledgeable staff who rarely knew what a media center was). I would never, ever, ever buy another gateway product. EVER. But humorously, I'll be hanging onto (and part-time lovin') this system for as long as it continues to work. It's a little bit of unsupported, buggy genius. Too bad it's a Gateway.

        5 out of 5 stars Convergence is a reality.......2004-04-17

I got one as an all-in-one center for images, video, TV, music, etc. It does the job well. TV image quality is excellent, and so is TV recording. Burning your favorite shows to DVD with a few button clicks is incredibly easy.
If you want something for your den, this is a machine that should definitely be on your list for consideration.

5 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect living room PC........2004-04-17

The Gateway FMC-901X blends an innovative case design with high performance components. The first thing that strikes you about the Gateway Media Center is that it looks more like a piece of stereo equipment than a computer. In fact the stackable design computer is fits perfectly on top of a VCR or stereo. This was a big selling point with my wife.

The next best feature is that it comes a super-sized 250GB hard drive with a personal video recorder that lets you record TV shows and watch them on your schedule. The advantage over Tivo is there's no monthly fee or any way for some corporation to keep track of what you watch and when.

Now from the comfort of your couch, you can watch video, TV, play digital music, watch digital video, surf the Internet, play games, arrange digital photos and play or record DVDs.

        5 out of 5 stars A fine-tuned media powerhouse........2004-04-17

Finally a piece of gear that looks like it belongs in an AV rack. I've been Very pleased with the appearance and usability of the system. Be aware that although it looks and performs like a component, it's also a PC. It comes with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. That means music- and photo-playback features are excellent, and the PVR functions are a close match for a dedicated TV recorder.

Since it's a computer and not a TV it takes a couple of minutes to boot-up. To power the media center, you need the remote control unit and the wireless keyboard and mouse. I've taken to leaving the system on all the time. The mouse uses a new motion-sensing technology that lets you control it with natural hand movements. Unlike most wireless mice, this one actually has range. I can still operate from outside the house through the window, 25 feet away, as long as I stay in the line of sight.

The AV-component look of the FMC-901X is helped by the flip-down panel on the front, which hides many of the myriad of controls and ports: FireWire port, two USB 2.0 jacks, and slots for Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and Smart Media memory cards, making it easy to move digital photos & MP3's into the system.

Bottom-line: this system is perfect for any true media enthusiast

4 out of 5 stars Noticeably better than the Dell unit.......2004-04-17

TV quality using the Hauppauge TV tuner card is substantially better than in other Media Center Edition PCs.

It does do Tivo-like functionality, which is highly addictive once you have it.

The system is still a little louder than I would like due to the cooling fans, but no louder than my Tivo box.

The sleek design is what really makes it stand out from the competition. The 901 looks like an A/V component and not a clunky PC.
Now if only there was support for multiple HDTV tuners or multichannel SACD, it would be nearly perfect.

        Amazon.com Product Description

Gateway's new Media Center desktop computers are as unique as they are convenient and functional. Equipped with a big, wide LCD screen just perfect for multimedia buffs, each Media Center PC also features such welcome amenities as Intel Hyper-Threading processing, numerous high-end audio/video/data connections, and a visually distinctive, fully portable all-in-one tower-less design. This model, the Gateway 610S, is the most economical member of the Media Center series, and as such offers reduced power and capability than its two higher-priced compatriots.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610S features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has elected to keep the main memory to a minimum with this machine (just 256 MB DDR SDRAM), thus compelling those who push the unit with the latest and greatest software to upgrade to 512 or 1024 MB. Serious gamers and 3-D artists may also want to upgrade the system's 3-D video controller, an Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory, though most users should find it quite adequate.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610S features a fast 7200 RPM 80 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like. In its stock form, the system does not support DVD burning.

To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, the system features a total of five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (including one mounted on the front) and an IEEE 1394 FireWire connector. Gateway has also enclosed a 5.1 line-out jack for five-speaker surround sound, a high-quality S/PDIF digital audio output, a composite A/V in, S-Video ins and outs, and an Intel 10/100 Ethernet adapter for fast network and Internet access.

The system's unique design offers several distinct advantages, not the least of which is a noticeable lack of external wiring. In fact, its large 17-inch widescreen display screen sports no wires at all, sitting instead atop a stylish integrated pedestal. Gateway has also included a wireless optical mouse, wireless keyboard, convenient wireless remote control, and built-in stereo speakers with subwoofer. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one month free access to the Napster music download site.

I have been using the 610S for almost a year now and found it to be a very reliable and easy-to-use machine. Very well designed and now upgraded to Media Center Edition 2004 (it came with Media Center 2002)

Rating a company badly because of damaged shipping is a bit one sided. I am sorry for your experience, and puzzled. I have bought Gateway equipment for ten years and I have never, I repeat NEVER, had to pay shipping to return damaged or defective equipment. Now unless they have drastically changed their policy for you I suggest you dig a little deeper or contact the president of the company. Since when has new replacements not been shipped out and a RA sticker not been given to return the defective equipment without charge?

2 out of 5 stars GATEWAY 610S Media Center PC.......2004-10-15

I was very excited when this product was delivered several days ago. I unpacked it and admittedly, I saw it as a beautiful looking machine. The wireless features, i.e., keyboard and mouse worked seamlessly. However, imagine my surprise when, on the same day I received it, the unit turned out to be broken. The 610S is a single piece of equipment, with the monitor and CPU as one unit. The monitor's neck was angled in a downward trajectory, and I was unable to tilt the monitor upwards so I could view it in a normal configuration. I immediately called Gateway Customer Service. The technicians were very nice, polite, and helpful, but to make a long story short ... adding insult to injury ... I was told I had to pay almost $87.00 for round trip delivery + insurance. This is not the same experience I've had with Gateway competitors. Another manufacturer included S&H as part of the one-year warranty. So, after two days of ownership, I suffered a broken monitor, more expense and probably about a month I'll be without a computer. Sometimes I feel as if I'm being nickle'd and dime'd to the poorhouse.

To be fair, it could also be Amazon.com's or UPS's fault, as a result of shipping and handling. Either way, I'm out more money, the hassle of repacking, having to stay home from work waiting for UPS pickup (which also costs me money in terms of time off), and generally being very angry about the whole experience. This, all through no fault of my own.

1 out of 5 stars BAD. VERY BAD. .......2007-08-23

It sounded really cool to have all-in-one computer especially to someone who has a little living space. However, do not buy this.
It won't take much of your living space but it will take a lot of headahes and fighting with gateway customer service. and they are not nice.
My first problem was the screen would start blink.(screen to completely black and to screen thing) It didn't shut off or anything but it got worse and worse everyday that I couldn't even see anything.
I sent it in to Gateway and they charged somewhat $250. ridiculous amount.
About 10months later? it started to blink and the problem repeated.
This computer had seaten in my closet for about 1yr but I saw some kind of solution online saying about power supply.
I bought it and it worked for about 3 days. But now, this would have some kind of scary blue screen show up then completely shuts off and repeat it.
This problem was even worse than before.
I believe that Gateway knows the problem but wouldn't take the responsibility. it sux.

3 out of 5 stars Power Supply problem Solved!!!.......2006-01-31

I've had the same problems as everyone else. My computer dies and won't reboot, as a result of a bad power supply. I, also, have talked to everyone in India working for Gateway about this issue with no resolution except "sending my computer to Gateway to be fixed" for approx. $400 (give or take), and there's no telling how long it would take to even get fixed. Anyway, I've talked to Gateway, Gateway's supplier of power supplies (Skyline Engineering), and even the original manufacturer of the power supply (Delta Electronics, Inc.). I have successfully taken apart my Gateway media center and extracted the power supply, and once they begin manufacturing the newly revised power supply, I will purchase it and re-install it myself. This will easily save me atleast $300. If you find yourself in this same situation, please e-mail me so that I can provide you with the detailed description of how to do this, along with ample pictures so that you don't have to go through what I did. DO NOT SEND YOUR COMPUTER TO GATEWAY, AND GIVE THEM YOUR MONEY!!! It's not hard to get to the power supply, especially after you read my directions. Gateway is not owning up to their mistakes on this design, and I'm considering pursuing a class-action suit as a result. Their ethics are unacceptable, by charging such a horrendous amount for what probably takes them about 10 minutes to do, maybe less. Don't be a sucker! E-mail me and let me help you out! No catch. stepwebb50@hotmail.com

4 out of 5 stars Great PC; Little Regret.......2004-07-27

I bought this unit probably about six months ago. At first, I must admit I was nervous about the purchase. At $2,000, it wasn't cheap and being a poor worker drone, it was a big decision to go with Gateway--a company on the verge of becoming bankrupt with a bad reputation. Gateway bought E-machines and the stock dived and the numerous reviews of the company as a whole stuck at a variety of online stores. But, this was before I bought the beautiful, sleek 610XL.

I was captivated by its compact design at first sight. And all the capabilities it had..wow! It was only after I bought it that I started to worry.

Turns out, I worried needlessly. Yeah, since I bought the PC, Gateway closed all its brick-and-mortar stores which is kind of worrying since the 3 yr warranty that comes with it might be moot if the whole company goes under. But, the customer service I have had with it since is encouraging. My brother loaded some software on it that killed it and it wouldn't turn on but the guy I called was wonderful. They shipped me the box to ship it back in two days and I got the computer back fixed and in tip top shape within a week. Can't beat that.

All in all, a good buy..if only I had waited to buy it =( It's now priced at 1,699 at Gateway I believe.

        Good:

        + Awesome screen - it's like a little TV
+ Powerful PC - works great with Cable internet
        + Compact, sleek, space-saving design
        + Good warranty

        Bad

        - Awful manual that does not even begin to help you explore what this PC can do
        - Awful customer support on software questions --like figuring out how to use the capablities of the PC such as recording VHS to DVD which it can do but I haven't figured out how)
        - Wireless keyboard and mouse's range is limited -- more like 2 feet rather than the advertised 6 feet
        - CD and DVD writer inexplicably fails from time to time wasting CD or DVD discs

5 out of 5 stars Great for college.......2004-07-25

This computer is just amazing. I got it about a week ago and I love how I can watch TV and use the TiVo like features that it offers. It's so simple and convenient because there's 1 cord!!!! (Unless if you add the cable TV cord too). The specs on it are great for gaming, although if you are a hardcore gamer it might be a turnoff because upgrading it requires you to send it in, although with 128 megs of video and the other great specs you won't need another computer for a long time. The wide screen I'm adjusting to for gaming because it stretches out everything just a bit although it's not too noticeable. It's great for watching DVDs though. This computer basically can serve as everything: as radio, cd player, dvd player, and gaming system. I bought a Logitech Mx900 because the supplied mouse is ok but I need the extra features of the Logitech, although the standard keyboard is great.

          The Basics
Whether you play games, edit videos, create graphics and animation or run a business, the stunning new Gateway 820GM Media Center Desktop PC has you covered, with room to spare. It may cost somewhat more than the average PC, but for good reason. Gateway has equipped this potent new machine with top notch amenities from top to bottom, thus providing you with assurances against future upgrades for some time to come. Sporting such desirable amenities as a full GB of memory, double layer DVD recording, a monstrous 250 GB hard drive and all the connectivity you'll likely ever need, the 820GM Media Center Desktop PC is tomorrow's computer today.

          Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features one of today's fastest CPUs, an Intel Pentium 4 530. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and an 800 MHz front side bus for a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a beefy 3.0 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a strong CPU that's ready for any situation.

          Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the 820GM Media Center Desktop PC, Gateway has installed a whopping 1024 MB (1 GB) of 400 DDR memory, configured in a dual channel setup for even faster response. This is a ton of memory even for a high-end machine, and its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for any multitasking situation or complex application. Moreover, the system's mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to an amazing 4 GB, though most users will never have the need.

          Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to a controller that's integrated on the mainboard and "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures.

The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-Express, a strong standalone graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. This card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in most computer games and 3D animation packages. Ultra-hardcore gamers and serious 3D artisans who demand perfect frame rates at extremely high resolutions may want to upgrade to a far pricier 256 or 512 MB video model, but this card should be quite adequate for the majority of users.

          Display:
Gateway has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

          Sound
The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC produces stereo and all-encompassing surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. Gateway has also enclosed a pair of amplified desktop speakers, though serious audiophiles may want to upgrade to a three-piece subwoofer-enhanced set or a surround sound configuration.

          Hard Drive
Even the busiest users will have a tough time ever filling this computer's hard drive. At 200 GB, it's spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is exceptionally quick - sporting a fast 7200-RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

          Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD burning, so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features two optical drives -- a CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a DVD +/- RW Double Layer Multi-Format drive through which you can not only do everything above but also take advantage of new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of traditional DVDs). Moreover, with two optical drives you can make extremely fast CD copies.

          Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Gateway has also included a trio of IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (often used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 8-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated Gigabit networking interface (substantially faster data transfer rates than traditional 100BaseT Ethernet) for Internet and network communication, and a standard 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections

          Operating System and Software
The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features a comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Gateway will also pre-install Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity package, Microsoft's Picture It Premium photo and graphic editing suite, and a variety of high-end multimedia utilities such as the superb Nero 6 Suite CD and DVD burning package.

          Control
The system includes a Gateway Premium Multimedia Keyboard and a two-button mouse with scroll wheel.

          Amazon.com Product Description

There's a brave new world in home entertainment that doesn't include the traditional stand-alone audio-video separates. Slowly but surely, VCRs, compact disc players, DVD players and all the other gadgets and wires that have made their way into living and entertainment rooms across America are being replaced. In their stead is a single unit -- a specialized computer that handles all of the above in addition to Internet surfing, CD burning, and much more. Gateway's new FMC-901 Family Media Center PC is one such device.

Designed in a horizontal rather than vertical format much like many of the units it replaces, the FMC-901 is built to reside comfortably in a standard entertainment center, conveniently receiving its user input via a wireless keyboard or wireless, handheld remote control and cordless mouse. The latter two are of particular interest in that they respond to mid-air gestures -- you can program the remote to increase system volume whenever you raise you arm, for example.

Compared to mainstream business and high-end gaming PCs, the FMC-901 isn't a true powerhouse. Driven by a 2.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor running at 2.6 GHz and 256 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM memory, the system's "nerve center" is somewhat less than state-of-the-art. However, its graphics card is an nVidia FX5200 with 128 MB memory for solid 3-D gaming performance. Furthermore, the unit features a variety of high-end outputs designed to maximize the quality of your sound and video. With S-Video, VGA and DVI outs, you're assured of having the best connection for whatever monitor or television you're watching. And with four high-speed USB 2.0 ports, three IEEE1394 FireWire connections, a digital SPDIF optical audio out and S-Video and composite A/V ins, you'll have the ideal interfaces for virtually anything.

The FMC-901 features a fast 7200 RPM 80 GB hard drive for smooth television broadcast recording, a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs and watch the latest DVD movies, and an integrated TV tuner. Communication options include a built-in 56K dial-up modem and 10/100 Ethernet for high-speed networking and Internet access. DVD writing is not supported.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

This model, the Gateway 610X, is the midlevel member of the Media Center series, and as such offers a good balance between cost and power and far superior 3-D graphics capability than the base model Gateway 610S.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610X features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has added a solid allotment of memory -- 512 MB DDR SDRAM -- and a top-level graphics card in the ATI Radeon 9200 AGP with 128 MB dedicated (not shared) video memory. Even serious gamers and 3-D artists should feel at home with this system.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610X features a potent 7200 RPM 120 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Ever.......2004-07-14

This machine will change your life. No more rushing home to watch a show, picking up five remotes trying to figure out which ones which, shssing your spouse until the important part of the show passes, switching CDs in your player, hooking the video camera up to the VCR to watch it, having a stack of stereo components, pulling out photo albums, etc. I could go on and on. This new design is extraordinary. My wife is nuts for this for it's simplicity. Stop reading this and buy one immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Everything most people need.......2004-04-17

The sleek look and ease of use of the Gateway FMC-901 make it a great choice if you want the features of a Media Center Edition PC but don't want a clunky PC in the family room.
I couldn't see paying the extra price tag on the 901X just to get the Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card and the DVD burner. So if playing games and recording to DVD media isn't important, the lower cost unit may be suitable for most needs.
